Impact Assessment of Dynamic Loading Induced by the Provision of Frequency Containment Reserve on the Main Bearing Lifetime of a Wind Turbine
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: frequency containment reserve, structural loading, wind energy, wind turbine control, wind turbine main bearing
The components of an operational wind turbine are continuously impacted by both static and dynamic loads. Regular inspections and maintenance are required to keep these components healthy. The main bearing of a wind turbine is one such component that experiences heavy loading forces during operation. These forces depend on various parameters such as wind speed, operating regime and control actions. When a wind turbine provides frequency containment reserve (FCR) to support the grid frequency, the forces acting upon the main bearing are also expected to exhibit more dynamic variations. These forces have a direct impact on the lifetime of the main bearing. With an increasing trend of wind turbines participating in the frequency ancillary services market, an analysis of these dynamic forces becomes necessary. To this end, this paper assesses the effect of FCR-based control on the main bearing lifetime of the wind turbine. Firstly, a control algorithm is implemented such that the output po... [more]

Analysis of Forest Biomass Wood Briquette Structure According to Different Tests of Density
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: briquettes, forest residues, wooden chips, X-ray radiation
X-ray technology is capable of non-destructively testing solid wood samples. The prepared wood briquette samples were identified by X-ray technology. The studies assessed the effect of biomass briquette structure by observing wood chip fractions under an X-ray. Study results show that X-ray technology is an effective tool for analyzing biomass wood-based materials, e.g., density, improving wood products quality and performance. The measurements are consistent with the true density, and chemical properties were measured from chosen material. In the article, a coefficient representing the picture density and true density of briquettes was proposed, and the comparison of both densities was based on the empirical measurements. Probably through an application of the conversion factor, the process of determining material densities could be simplified, cheaper, and quicker. Due to the conducted research, X-ray technology is an effective tool for improving wood products’ quality and performanc... [more]

Biocementation as a Pro-Ecological Method of Stabilizing Construction Subsoil
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bio-cementation, MICP (microbially induced calcite precipitation), shear strength, Sporosarcina pasteurii, stabilization
The principle of sustainable development imposes an obligation on societies to manage natural resources rationally and to care for the quality of the environment, by, among other things, reducing CO2 emissions. Alternative ways of stabilising building substrates by increasing their shear strength (cu) are increasingly being sought. This paper presents how microorganisms can influence cu and thus the load-bearing capacity of building substrates. Tests were performed in a triaxial compression apparatus in three variants. The first variant of testing was carried out on cemented soil samples, which were cemented in situ. The next two series of tests were performed on reconstructed samples, i.e., natural soil and soil inoculated with a solution of Sporosarcina pasteurii bacteria. The results obtained show that carbonate cementation increases the shear strength of the soil; in addition, this biomineralization-induced cementation gives higher cu results than natural carbonate cementation.

Mass Transfer Behaviors and Battery Performance of a Ferrocyanide-Based Organic Redox Flow Battery with Different Electrode Shapes
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: discharge voltage, electrode shape, Energy Storage, mass transfer, numerical model
The ferrocyanide-based organic redox flow battery (ferrocyanide-based ORFB), based on electrochemistry, has become a potential energy storage technology due to its low price, eco-friendliness, safety, and convenience. However, its low efficiency and poor mass transfer performance hinder the application of the ORFB. The influence of the electrode shape (trapezoid, sector, and rectangle) on the mass transfer and battery performance are studied based on a numerical model, which is verified by the experiments. The results show that battery performance of the trapezoid electrode is better than that of the sector and rectangle electrode. The discharge voltage of the rectangle battery is the lowest, and the discharge voltage of the trapezoid battery is the highest. The discharge voltage of the rectangle battery is 4.47% lower than that of the trapezoid battery. The uniformity factor value of the trapezoid battery is 26.9% higher than that of the rectangle battery. The trapezoid shape is the b... [more]

Role of Non-Renewable Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Driving Environmental Sustainability in India: Evidence from the Load Capacity Factor Hypothesis
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: environmental sustainability, India, load capacity factor, non-renewable energy efficiency, renewable energy utilization
Policymakers and environmental scientists have proposed numerous measures toward achieving a sustainable environment. Some of these measures include the efficient use of energy and a clean energy transition. This study empirically investigates the role of non-renewable energy efficiency and renewable energy utilization in driving environmental sustainability in India over the period from 1965 to 2018. Using the approach of the Dynamic Autoregressive Distributed Lag (DyARDL) simulations, the empirical evidence shows that non-renewable energy efficiency and renewable energy utilization promote environmental sustainability through an increase in the load capacity factor. The effects of financial development and trade impede environmental sustainability through a decrease in the load capacity factor. The results further show that the relationship between income and load capacity factor is characterized by an inverted U-shape. This suggests that the load capability curve (LCC) hypothesis is... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: 36-slot 12-pole outer-rotor SPMSM/SPMSG, flux-weakening control, maximum torque per volt control, predictive control
This paper investigates a drive system with energy recovery which uses a 3-phase 1-kW 36-slot 12-pole distributed winding outer-rotor surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) and surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous generator (SPMSG), which can be used in indoor exercise bicycles. In order to extend drive system operating speed range, the constant torque control, flux-weakening control, and maximum torque/voltage control are used to extend its operation speed up to 1.75 times rated speed. In addition, a predictive speed controller and a predictive current controller are proposed to improve transient responses, load disturbance responses, and tracking responses. A digital signal processor, type TMS-320F-28035, manufactured by Texas Instruments, is used as a control center for the proposed SPMSM/SPMSG drive system. Experimental results validate the feasibility and correctness of the proposed methods.

A Novel Energy Accounting Model Using Fuzzy Restricted Boltzmann Machine—Recurrent Neural Network
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: adaptive fuzzy Adam optimization algorithm (AFAOA), energy accounting, fuzzy restricted Boltzmann machine, linear-scaling normalization, recurrent neural network (FRBM-RNN)
Energy accounting is a system for regularly measuring, analyzing, and reporting the energy use of various activities. This is done to increase energy efficiency and monitor the impact of energy usage on the environment. Primary energy accounting is now done by determining the amount of fossil fuel energy required to generate it. However, if fossil fuels become scarcer, this strategy becomes less viable. Instead, a new energy accounting approach will be required, one that takes into consideration the intermittent character of the two most prevalent renewable energy sources, wind and solar power. Furthermore, estimation of the energy consumption data collected from household surveys, whether using a recall-based approach or a meter-based one, remains a difficult task. Hence, this paper proposes a novel energy accounting model using Fuzzy Restricted Boltzmann Machine-Recurrent Neural Network (FRBM-RNN). The energy consumption dataset is preprocessed using linear-scaling normalization. The... [more]

Cooling of Concentrated Photovoltaic Cells—A Review and the Perspective of Pulsating Flow Cooling
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: concentrated solar cell, CPV cooling mechanism, electrical and thermal efficiency, heat transfer enhancement, high heat flux dissipation, solar energy
This article presents a review to provide up-to-date research findings on concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) cooling, explore the key challenges and opportunities, and discuss the limitations. In addition, it provides a vision of a possible future trend and a glimpse of a promising novel approach to CPV cooling based on pulsating flow, in contrast to existing cooling methods. Non-concentrated photovoltaics (PV) have modest efficiency of up to around 20% because they utilise only a narrow spectrum of solar irradiation for electricity conversion. Therefore, recent advances employed multi-junction PV or CPV to widen the irradiation spectrum for conversion. CPV systems concentrate solar irradiation on the cell’s surface, producing high solar flux and temperature. The efficient cooling of CPV cells is critical to avoid thermal degradation and ensure optimal performance. Studies have shown that pulsating flow can enhance heat transfer in various engineering applications. The advantage of pulsat... [more]

Small-Scale Phase Change Materials in Low-Temperature Applications: A Review
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: form stability, heat sink, material additives, micro, nano, PCM, Sustainability, temperature control, thermal energy storage
Significant efforts have explored the field of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) for various applications. Research and real-world applications explore length scales that range from infrastructure to micro systems. A commonality of these efforts is the desire to utilize the phase change capability of the PCM to provide a steady temperature heat sink for thermal storage. Smaller scale efforts and materials are presented in this present review. A general challenge to the use of these PCMs regardless of application is the low thermal conductivity present as a baseline material property. Efforts to improve thermal conductivity have included the addition of underlying metal foam structures, heat pipes, or metallic fins inserted into the base PCM. Other efforts have investigated alterations to the base materials themselves by employing additives such as graphite to supplement thermal performance. Other additives are used to obtain form stability in the PCM as it melts. While the field of PCM res... [more]

Experimental Investigation of High-Pressure Liquid Ammonia Injection under Non-Flash Boiling and Flash Boiling Conditions
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flash boiling spray, high-pressure injection, liquid ammonia, NH3, zero-carbon fuel
Liquid ammonia is an ideal zero-carbon fuel for internal combustion engines. High-pressure injection is a key technology in organizing ammonia combustion. Characteristics of high-pressure liquid ammonia injection is lack of research. Spray behaviors are likely to change when a high-pressure diesel injector uses liquid ammonia as its fuel. This study uses high-speed imaging with a DBI method to investigate the liquid penetration, width, and spray tip velocity of high-pressure liquid ammonia injection up to 100 MPa. Non-flash and flash boiling conditions were included in the experimental conditions. Simulation was also used to evaluate the results. In non-flash boiling conditions, the Hiroyasu model provided better accuracy than the Siebers model. In flash boiling conditions, a phenomenon was found that liquid penetration and spray tip velocity were strongly suppressed in the initial stage of the injection process, this being the “spray resistance phenomenon”. The “spray resistance pheno... [more]

Excess Anisotropy: A Method to Predict Frequency of Resistive Fractures in the Wolfcamp Shale
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: anisotropy, fracture prediction, linear regression, resistive fractures
A horizontal well in the Wolfcamp Formation within the Delaware Basin exhibits cross-dipole sonic log anisotropy varying from 0.0% to 29.7% over the reservoir interval. Massive limestones exhibit little anisotropy while shales and intervals with high fracture counts have high anisotropy. Integrated analysis of acoustic, image and triple combo open-hole log data indicates that the computed volume of shale log is a strong predictor of anisotropy with a simple linear relationship. However, there is much anisotropy that is not accounted for by this lithologically related linear relationship. We refer to the residual obtained by subtracting the predicted anisotropy using this relationship from the measured anisotropy from a cross-dipole sonic tool as the excess anisotropy. The excess anisotropy is the remaining anisotropy that is not accounted for by linear regression between the volume of shale log and the measured anisotropy. We find that the excess anisotropy is linearly correlated to th... [more]

Subject: System Identification
Keywords: isolated working face, microseismic monitoring, mining-induced stress behavior, overburden structure, weighting strength
Solutions for the maintenance of safety in an isolated working face has not been well achieved; this is attributed to its unique overburden structure and the strong mining-induced stress during the advancement. This paper is devoted to filling this research gap and is based on the case study of LW 10304 in the Xinglongzhuang Coal Mine, in China. The overburden structure and stress distribution characteristics of this isolated working face were theoretically investigated, followed by the development of a comprehensive identification method. The research results showed the following: (1) The overburden strata of LW 10304 is in the form of a short “T” shape and the stress increment is featured with the overall “saddle” shape before the extraction of the isolated working face. During this period, the lower key strata and main key strata affect the stress level at the two ends and the central part of the working face, respectively; (2) Both the frequency and energy of micro-earthquakes in t... April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: autoencoder, data-driven, deep learning, DL regression, electric vehicle, lithium-ion batteries, LSTM, Machine Learning, remaining useful life, RUL
Electric vehicles (EVs) are spreading fast as they promise to provide better performance and comfort, but above all, to help face climate change. Despite their success, their cost is still a challenge. Lithium-ion batteries are one of the most expensive EV components, and have become the standard for energy storage in various applications. Precisely estimating the remaining useful life (RUL) of battery packs can encourage their reuse and thus help to reduce the cost of EVs and improve sustainability. A correct RUL estimation can be used to quantify the residual market value of the battery pack. The customer can then decide to sell the battery when it still has a value, i.e., before it exceeds the end of life of the target application, so it can still be reused in a second domain without compromising safety and reliability. This paper proposes and compares two deep learning approaches to estimate the RUL of Li-ion batteries: LSTM and autoencoders vs. CNN and autoencoders. The autoencode... [more]

Practical Approximation of Sheet Losses Taking into Account the Guillotine and Laser Cutting Effect
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cutting effect, electrical steel sheet specific loss, loss approximation, losses in electrical machines
Reducing losses in electrical devices is essential for reducing global energy consumption. Losses in the core of electrical machines constitute a significant part of the overall losses—their share increases with the number of machines powered by PWM converters, especially for high-speed machines. Limiting core losses requires precise determination at the design stage of the device. Achieving this goal is possible thanks to numerical or analytical simulation. A necessary input for this process is the correct determination of the properties of the core material. The sheet loss, however, changes due to the machining process, primarily punching. The subject of the work is to develop a sufficiently accurate approximation of electrical steel sheet-specific loss, taking into account the effects of cutting and the width of a given machine element for a wide range of induction and frequency. Keywords: diagnostic process, expert system, intelligent systems, knowledge base, Mean Time to Failure (MTTF), reliability, servicing process, wind farm device
Nowadays, one of the main sources of renewable energy is wind energy; therefore, a wind farm’s electricity system must be effective. As a result, wind farm (WF) equipment must continuously operate without failure or damage. To achieve this, it is necessary to regularly monitor and assess the reliability of WF systems at every point of their “life”, including design, implementation, and continued use. Three key goals are presented in the article. First, a theory of fundamental theoretical quantities that can be used in reliability and maintenance analysis is presented. The second is to put forth a theoretical reliability link between mean time to failure and WF system fitness probability (Mean Time to Failures (MTTF—Mean time between failures. MTTF = t1 + t2 + … + tn/m, where: m—the number of all failures at time T, ti—i—ty time to failure)). Keywords: criterion method, electric power system, instability of generation, renewable energy sources, reserve means, similarity theory
This paper presents a method for refining the forecast schedule of renewable energy sources (RES) generation by its intraday adjustment and investigates the measures for reserving RES with unstable generation in electric power systems (EPSs). Owing to the dependence of electricity generation by solar and wind power plants (PV and WPPs, respectively) on natural conditions, problems arise with their contribution to the process of balancing the power system. Therefore, the EPS is obliged to keep a power reserve to compensate for deviations in RES from the planned generation amount. A system-wide reserve (mainly the shunting capacity of thermal and hydroelectric power plants) is used first, followed by other means of power reserve: electrochemical, hydrogen, or biogas plants. To analyze the technical and economic efficiency of certain backup means, mathematical models based on the theory of similarity and the criterion method were developed.
