Diagnostic Row Reasoning Method Based on Multiple-Valued Evaluation of Residuals and Elementary Symptoms Sequence
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: diagnostic reasoning, fault isolation, industrial processes, symptoms dynamics
The paper analyses the research problem of conducting diagnostic reasoning for dynamic objects to eliminate the possibility of formulating false diagnoses resulting from different delays of the symptoms related to a particular fault while simultaneously striving to obtain high distinguishability. The research aimed to develop a new diagnostic inference method robust to symptom delays and characterised by high accuracy of generated diagnosis. Known methods ensuring the correctness of inference in the case of symptom delays but at the cost of reducing distinguishability of faults have been characterised. A new inference method was developed, which uses the three-valued residual evaluation and knowledge regarding elementary symptom sequences. A formal description of the diagnosing system and the proposed method are given. The method of obtaining the knowledge about the order of symptoms based on a cause-and-effect graph and was characterised. The method’s effectiveness was presented in si... [more]

A Methodology for Estimating the Position of the Engineering Bedrock for Offshore Wind Farm Seismic Demand in Taiwan
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ground model, offshore wind farm, seismic demand
Taiwan lies in the circum-Pacific earthquake zone. The seabed soil of offshore wind farms in Taiwan is mainly composed of loose silty sand and soft, low-plasticity clay. The seismic demand for offshore wind turbines has been given by the local code. Ground-motion analysis is required to consider the site effects of the soil liquefaction potential evaluation and the foundation design of offshore wind turbines. However, the depth of the engineering bedrock for ground motion analysis is not presented in the local code. In this study, we develop a three-dimensional ground model of an offshore wind farm in the Changhua area, through use of collected in situ borehole and PS (P wave (compression) and S (shear) wave velocities) logging test data. The engineering bedrock is the sediment at the depth where the average shear wave velocity of soil within 30 m, Vsd30, is larger than 360 m/s. In this ground model, the shear wave velocity of each type of soil is quantified using the seismic empirical... [more]

Study of Hydrogen Adsorption on Metal-Decorated Borophene-Graphene Bilayer
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: borophene, density functional theory, graphene, hydrogen evolution reaction, single-atom catalyst
We studied the hydrogen adsorption on the surface of a covalently bonded bilayer borophene-graphene heterostructure decorated with Pt, Ni, Ag, and Cu atoms. Due to its structure, the borophene-graphene bilayer combines borophene activity with the mechanical stability of graphene. Based on the density functional theory calculations, we determined the energies and preferred adsorption sites of these metal atoms on the heterostructure’s borophene surface. Since boron atoms in different positions can have different reactivities with respect to metal atoms, we considered seven possible adsorption positions. According to our calculations, all three metals adsorb in the top position above the boron atom and demonstrate catalytic activity. Among the metals considered, copper had the best characteristics. Copper-decorated heterostructure possesses a feasible near-zero overpotential for hydrogen evolution reaction. However, the borophene-graphene bilayer decorated with copper is unstable with re... Ice Load Characteristics on Floating Photovoltaic Platform
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: floating photovoltaic system, ice load, mathematical modeling, wind effect
Nowadays, based upon human needs and preferring perpetual types of energy, photovoltaic system (PV) is a suitable alternative and more frequently used in northern countries, which are recently more attracted by solar power. The new floating type of the structure is installed in the water bodies instead of land. One of the main elements in floating photovoltaic structures is the forces imposed on the panels. In the northern regions, the dominant load is considered to be ice interaction with the structure. This study aims at identifying the loads imposed on a floating PV structure located in the Łapino Reservoir on the Radunia River, which are produced by the wind action on the ice cover. The wind velocity varying between 10 and 26 m/s is implemented, and also the reduction of the pool level was studied. Wind direction plays an important role in the inclination and expansion of ice accumulation. Moreover, the magnitude of wind velocity is a determinative factor in the maximum thickness e... [more]

Life-Cycle Assessment of a Rural Terraced House: A Struggle with Sustainability of Building Renovations
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: building renovation, energy efficiency, energy sources, environmental impacts, life-cycle assessment, sustainable construction
Contemporary research stresses the need to reduce mankind’s environmental impacts and achieve sustainability. One of the keys to this is the construction sector. New buildings have to comply with strict limits regarding resource consumption (energy, water use, etc.). However, they make up only a fraction of the existing building stock. Renovations of existing buildings are therefore essential for the reduction of the environmental impacts in the construction sector. This paper illustrates the situation using a case study of a rural terraced house in a village near Brno, Czech Republic. It compares the life-cycle assessment (LCA) of the original house and its proposed renovation as well as demolition followed by new construction. The LCA covers both the initial embodied environmental impacts (EEIs) and the 60-year operation of the house with several variants of energy sources. The results show that the proposed renovation would reduce overall environmental impacts (OEIs) of the house by... [more]

Handling Initial Conditions in Vector Fitting for Real Time Modeling of Power System Dynamics
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: power system dynamics, real-time modeling, vector fitting
This paper develops a predictive modeling algorithm, denoted as Real-Time Vector Fitting (RTVF), which is capable of approximating the real-time linearized dynamics of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) dynamical systems via rational transfer function matrices. Based on a generalization of the well-known Time-Domain Vector Fitting (TDVF) algorithm, RTVF is suitable for online modeling of dynamical systems which experience both initial-state decay contributions in the measured output signals and concurrently active input signals. These adaptations were specifically contrived to meet the needs currently present in the electrical power systems community, where real-time modeling of low frequency power system dynamics is becoming an increasingly coveted tool by power system operators. After introducing and validating the RTVF scheme on synthetic test cases, this paper presents a series of numerical tests on high-order closed-loop generator systems in the IEEE 39-bus test system.

Importance of Agriculture in Creating Energy Security—A Case Study of Poland
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Analyses of statistical data were made and their results discussed in this article to identify the level of Poland’s energy security and to determine the role of agriculture in ensuring it. It has been demonstrated that coal continues to be the staple resource for the generation of energy in Poland. The current demands and requirements concerning the reduced consumption of non-renewable resources and Poland’s obligations towards the European Union regarding the production of energy from renewable resources—all these considerations contribute to the promotion of a skillful development of energy crop farming, which, in Poland, is likely to be very successful. Agriculture plays an important role in ensuring Poland’s energy security, and this branch of farming can grow dynamically provided adequate legal regulations and promotion are in place. The chief resource for renewable energy generation is biomass. Straw and biogas production in agricultural biogas plants are two solutions whose ful... [more]

Current Sharing Control of an Interleaved Three-Phase Series-Resonant Converter with Phase Shift Modulation
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current sharing, interleaved, LLC-SRC
Recently, three-phase series-resonant converters (SRCs) have been proposed for high power applications. Three-phase SRCs can achieve zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) of the primary power switches and regulate the output voltage by pulse-frequency modulation. The interleaving technique is also a conventional method for DC-DC converters to achieve a high power level, reducing the output voltage ripples due to operating out of phase at the same frequency between the two converters. However, an interleaved three-phase SRC cannot easily synchronize switching instants between the two modules due to the component tolerances of circuits. In the proposed control method, phase shift modulation (PSM) is used to solve the output current imbalance caused by component tolerances. The power switches of the converter can also maintain synchronizing switching instants between the two modules. Therefore, the lower output voltage ripple can be achieved. A detailed analysis and design of this new control meth... [more]

Impact on Current-Interrupting Characteristic by Parameter Settings of Superconducting Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: parameter settings, quench characteristic, step-changing case method, superconducting hybrid DC circuit breaker
DC faults cause severe disruption in not only the DC system but also the AC system because the fault current is very large and rapidly increases. The DC circuit breaker used to separate the DC faults from the power system is still being researched, but it is very expensive due to the use of multiple power semiconductors to interrupt a large fault current in a short time. However, if the quench characteristic of a superconductor is used, the amplitude of fault current can be reduced. Therefore, it is possible to effectively interrupt a large fault current even if a relatively cheap mechanically passive DC circuit breaker is used. In the current study, a superconducting hybrid DC circuit breaker is proposed, and the limiting characteristics of each element are analyzed. By using two superconducting elements, the quench occurs sequentially twice according to the magnitude of the fault current, and the current-limiting reactor and resistance are used. If a current-limiting reactor is used... [more]

Performance Study and Optimization Design of High-Speed Amorphous Alloy Induction Motor
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: amorphous alloy, finite element analysis, loss analysis, mechanical stress, prototype test
Due to the simple structure, low inertia and the ability to operate for a long time under high-speed and high-temperature conditions, the induction motor is widely used in high-speed applications. Aiming at the most prominent loss and stress problems in high-speed induction motors, the use of low loss material and the choice of a reliable rotor structure are effective optimized methods. In this paper, the electromagnetic loss, stator temperature distribution and performance parameters of high-speed induction motor are analyzed with stator cores of different materials. In addition, for the different rotor structures, the mechanical stress is compared. Furthermore, the comparison and analysis are used to improve the motor performance and provide a reference for prototype development. A performance test of the prototype is conducted, which proves the validity of the study in this paper.

Keywords: energy security, energy transitions, Latin America, power system, Sustainability
Energy transitions are transforming energy systems around the globe. Such a shift has caused the power system to become a critical piece of infrastructure for the economic development of every nation on the planet. Therefore, guaranteeing its security is crucial, not only for energy purposes but also as a part of a national security strategy. This paper presents a multidimensional index developed to assess energy security of electrical systems in the long term. This tool, named the Power System Security Index (PSIx), which has been previously used for the evaluation of a country in two different time frames, is applied to evaluate the member countries of the Latin American Energy Organization, located within the Latin America and the Caribbean region, to measure its performance on energy security. Mixed results were obtained from the analysis, with clear top performers in the region such as Argentina, while there are others with broad areas of opportunity, as is the case of Haiti.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: disaster, nuclear energy, nuclear power, risk perception, Serbia
Nuclear power remains one of the most accessible choices in addressing environmental and social concerns due to the continuously increasing energy needs around the world. While it remains an excellent source of energy due to its low price and low level of emissions, potential accidents remain a serious problem. An example of such is the most recent accident in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (2011), which reminded the world of the potential risks of nuclear energy and the consequences of which continue to have a lasting effect. There is no nuclear power plant in Serbia, but there are about 15 nuclear power stations scattered within its neighboring countries. Therefore, the Serbian Government decided to study how the Serbian public perceives the risks related to the potential construction of nuclear power stations in the country, nuclear energy in general, and its possible benefits and risks. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: finite volume method, laminar flow, magnetohydrodynamics
Important industrial applications are based on magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), which concerns the flow of electrically conducting fluids immersed in external magnetic fields. Using the Finite Volume Method, we performed a 3D numerical study of the MHD flow of a conducting fluid in a circular duct. The flow considered was laminar and fully developed. Along the initial section of the duct, there were magnets placed around the duct producing magnetic fields in the radial direction. Two arrangements of magnetic field orientation were considered: fields pointing toward and away from the duct’s center alternately, and all fields pointing toward the duct’s center. For each arrangement of magnets, various intensities of magnetic fields were considered to evaluate two effects: the influence of the magnetic field on the flow velocity, and the influence of the flow velocity on magnetic field induction. It was found that for the second arrangement of magnets and Hartmann numbers larger than 10, the fl... [more]

Keywords: dynamic programming, fracture fluid, high viscous fracture fluid
Investigating the key factors that impact fluid rheology and proppant static settling velocity in high viscosity friction reducers (HVFRs) is a critical aspect for successful proppant transport in hydraulic fracture treatment. In this study, the rheological properties of HVFRs were tested at various temperature ranges (i.e., 25, 50, 75, and 100 °C) and different HVFR concentrations (i.e., 1, 2, 4, and 8 gpt). Three sizes of spherical particle diameters (i.e., 2, 4, and 6 mm) were selected to measure the static settling velocity. The fracture fluid was tested in two fracture models: an unconfined glass model and a confined rectangular model with two fracture widths (7 and 10 mm). The settling velocity in the confined and unconfined models was measured using an advanced video camera. HVFR results exhibited acceptable thermal stability even at higher temperatures, also the viscosity and elasticity increased considerably with increasing concentration. Keywords: anode modification, Fe3O4, microbial fuel cell, polypyrrole
Anode modification is a useful method to increase the performance of microbial fuel cells (MFCs). By using the electrochemical deposition method, Fe3O4 and polypyrrole (PPy) were polymerized on a carbon felt anode to prepare Fe3O4-PPy composite modified anodes. In order to ascertain the effect of electrodeposition time on characteristics of the modified electrode, the preparation time of the modified electrode was adjusted. The modified anodes were used in MFCs, and their performances were evaluated by analyzing the electricity generation performance and sewage treatment capacity of MFCs. Experimental results indicated that the Fe3O4-PPy composite modified anodes could enhance the power production capacity and sewage treatment efficiency of MFC effectively. In particular, when the deposition time was 50 min, the modified anode could significantly improve the MFC performance. In this case, the steady-state current density of MFC increased by 59.5% in comparison with that of the MFC with... [more]

A two-dimensional perovskite photonic crystal structure of Methylamine lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3, MAPbI3) is rationally designed as the absorption layer for solar cells. The photonic crystal (PC) structure possesses the distinct “slow light” and band gap effect, leading to the increased absorption efficiency of the absorption layer, and thus the increased photoelectric conversion efficiency of the battery. Simulation results indicate that the best absorption efficiency can be achieved when the scattering element of indium arsenide (InAs) cylinder is arranged in the absorption layer in the form of tetragonal lattice with the height of 0.6 μm, the diameter of 0.24 μm, and the lattice constant of 0.4 μm. In the wide wavelength range of 400−1200 nm, the absorption efficiency can be reached up to 82.5%, which is 70.1% higher than that of the absorption layer without the photonic crystal structure. Subject: Materials
Keywords: analytical methods, induction motor efficiency, induction motors, magnetic materials
The technologies of cutting the cores of electric machines change the magnetic properties and the loss of the electrical sheets used, affecting the machine’s parameters, mainly power losses and efficiency. This is particularly important in the case of induction motors, which are a significant consumer of electricity. Therefore, the problem of increasing their efficiency is important from the point of view of environmental impact. The article presents a method of approximating a material’s magnetic properties based on the results of measurements carried out with specimens of various widths. The presented method allows for an approximate representation of the changes in the structure of the material caused by the cutting technology. It is used in the analytical method for calculating motor parameters, and gives results that are in good agreement with the measurement. This method can determine the operating parameters of electrical machines of various sizes and rated powers.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, CFB boiler, DR-VPSA, flue gas, SO2/NOx removal
The problem of reducing carbon dioxide emissions from flue gas, particularly from flue gas originating from coal-firing CFB systems, is currently an important challenge. Many centers around the world have tested post-combustion CO2 capture systems. One of these systems, operated using DR-VPSA adsorption technology (dual-reflux vacuum pressure swing adsorption), was tested under the Strategic Project in Poland. The flue gas in this study originated from a supercritical CFB boiler (460 MWe). An important problem involved in capturing CO2 from flue gas is the occurrence of SO2 and NOx. These substances have a negative effect on the CO2 adsorption process. In this study, commercial impregnated activated carbon was used to remove SO2 and NOx from CFB flue gas in the pre-treatment section during the tests of a pilot CO2 capture unit in a large-scale CFB boiler at the Lagisza Power Plant (Poland). An Interval Optimization-Based Approach for Electric−Heat−Gas Coupled Energy System Planning Considering the Correlation between Uncertainties
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: affine coordinate transformation, correlations model, EH multi-objective interval optimization, Genetic Algorithm, uncertainties
In this paper, a novel methodological framework for energy hub (EH) planning, considering the correlation between renewable energy source (RES) and demand response (DR) uncertainties, is proposed. Unlike other existing works, our study explicitly considers the potential correlation between the uncertainty of integrated energy system operations (i.e., wind speed, light intensity, and demand response). Firstly, an EH single-objective interval optimization model is established, which aims at minimizing investment and operation costs. The model fully considers the correlation between various uncertain parameters. Secondly, the correlation between uncertainties is dealt with by the interval models of multidimensional parallelism and affine coordinate transformation, which are transformed into a deterministic optimization problem by the interval order relationship and probability algorithm, and then solved by a genetic algorithm. Finally, an experimental case is analyzed, and the results sho... [more]

Keywords: electronics cooling, loop heat pipe, thermal conductivity, wick materials
In loop heat pipes (LHPs), wick materials and their structures are important in achieving continuous heat transfer with a favorable distribution of the working fluid. This article introduces the characteristics of loop heat pipes with different wicks: (i) sintered stainless steel and (ii) ceramic. The evaporator has a flat-rectangular assembly under gravity-assisted conditions. Water was used as a working fluid, and the performance of the LHP was analyzed in terms of temperatures at different locations of the LHP and thermal resistance. As to the results, a stable operation can be maintained in the range of 50 to 520 W for the LHP with the stainless-steel wick, matching the desired limited temperature for electronics of 85 °C at the heater surface at 350 W (129.6 kW·m−2). Results using the ceramic wick showed that a heater surface temperature of below 85 °C could be obtained when operating at 54 W (20 kW·m−2).

Semi-Analytical Solution to Assess CO2 Leakage in the Subsurface through Abandoned Wells

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: abandoned wells, analytical solution, CCS, CO2 storage, leakage, pressure transient analysis
Geological carbon storage is an effective method capable of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at significant scales. Subsurface reservoirs with sealing caprocks can provide long-term containment for the injected fluid. Nevertheless, CO2 leakage is a major concern. The presence of abandoned wells penetrating the reservoir caprock may cause leakage flow-paths for CO2 to the overburden. Assessment of time-varying leaky wells is a need. In this paper, we propose a new semi-analytical approach based on pressure-transient analysis to model the behavior of CO2 leakage and corresponding pressure distribution within the storage site and the overburden. Current methods assume instantaneous leakage of CO2 occurring with injection, which is not realistic. In this work, we employ the superposition in time and space to solve the diffusivity equation in 2D radial flow to approximate the transient pressure in the reservoirs.
