Development of an Efficient Tool for Solar Charging Station Management for Electric Vehicles
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: charging stations, electric vehicles, hybrid systems, solar systems
One important goal of the climate commitment in the European Union (EU) is to reduce primary energy demand in the transport sector and increase the use of renewables, since around 33% of primary energy is consumed in this sector. Therefore, the EU ordered its member states to raise the number of electric vehicles (EVs) within Europe. Consequently, the energy demand for electricity will rise as a function of the number of EVs. To avoid local grid overload and guarantee a higher percentage of clean energy, EV charging stations can be supported by a combined system of grid-connected photovoltaic modules and battery storage. In this paper, the focus lies on the feasibility and economic aspects of such systems. To provide an overview of the different e-charging station combinations, a support tool was modelled and developed, making it possible to size and manage EVs charging stations with only a few input parameters. Thanks to its easy handling, the tool suits a wide spectrum of users. Due... [more]

Mechanical and Thermal Performance Characterisation of Compressed Earth Blocks
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: compressed earth blocks (CEBs), compressive strength, durability, guarded hot box, thermal transmittance
The present research is focused on an experimental investigation to evaluate the mechanical, durability, and thermal performance of compressed earth blocks (CEBs) produced in Portugal. CEBs were analysed in terms of electrical resistivity, ultrasonic pulse velocity, compressive strength, total water absorption, water absorption by capillarity, accelerated erosion test, and thermal transmittance evaluated in a guarded hotbox setup apparatus. Overall, the results showed that compressed earth blocks presented good mechanical and durability properties. Still, they had some issues in terms of porosity due to the particle size distribution of soil used for their production. The compressive strength value obtained was 9 MPa, which is considerably higher than the minimum requirements for compressed earth blocks. Moreover, they presented a heat transfer coefficient of 2.66 W/(m2·K). This heat transfer coefficient means that this type of masonry unit cannot be used in the building envelope witho... [more]

Boiling Heat Transfer Performance of Parallel Porous Microchannels
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow boiling, heat transfer, porous microchannel, pressure drop, pressure fluctuation
Flow boiling in microporous layers has attracted a great deal of attention in the enhanced heat transfer field due to its high heat dissipation potential. In this study, flow boiling experiments were performed on both porous microchannels and a copper-based microchannel, using water as the coolant. As the heat flux was less than 80 W/cm2, the porous microchannels presented significantly higher boiling heat transfer coefficients than the copper-based microchannel. This was closely associated with the promotion of the nucleation site density of the porous coating. With the further increase in heat flux, the heat transfer coefficients of the porous microchannels were close to those of the copper-based sample. The boiling process in the porous microchannel was found to be dominated by the nucleate boiling mechanism from low to moderate heat flux (<80 W/cm2).This switched to the convection boiling mode at high heat flux. The porous samples were able to mitigate flow instability greatly.... [more]

Emission Characteristics under Diesel and Biodiesel Fueled Compression Ignition Engine with Various Injector Holes and EGR Conditions
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel fuel, common rail engine, exhaust gas, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), injector nozzle
The combustion performance of a conventional rail diesel engine was investigated by measuring the exhaust gas with the respect to the number of injector holes, fuel type, and the use of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), to provide a detailed reduction of environmental pollutants. It was found that a six- or seven-hole injector was more effective than a five-hole injector for reducing the exhaust gas. In addition, the mixing of 20% biodiesel oil with diesel most effectively reduced the HC and NOx contents. The technology generally reduced the NOx and CO contents of the exhaust, but had no significant effect on the HC and CO2 contents.

Technical Evaluation of a PV-Diesel Hybrid System with Energy Storage: Case Study in the Tapajós-Arapiuns Extractive Reserve, Amazon, Brazil
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Amazon, diesel generator, hybrid energy system, photovoltaic, remote areas, Wind
In 2018 the number of people without access to electricity dropped to less than 1 billion. However, the difficulty of serving these people became higher, as the locations are in the most remote areas of the world. Brazil, for example, needs to bring electricity to around 1 million people who, in the vast majority, live within the Amazon region. In this way, hybrid energy systems (HESs) count as an attractive alternative for power generation, especially in remote areas. Therefore, this article analyzes a case study of a hybrid photovoltaic-diesel system installed in the Tapajós-Arapiuns Extractive Reserve in the Brazilian Amazon region. The studied plant is composed of a photovoltaic (PV) system, a lead-acid electrochemical battery bank, a diesel generator, and electro-electronic loads with highly variable demand throughout the year. The HOMER PRO software is used as the simulation tool. The results show that the load following dispatch strategy is the best option, with 85.6% of the loa... [more]

Sequence Stratigraphy and Geochemistry of Oil Shale Deposits in the Upper Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation of the Songliao Basin, NE China: Implications for the Geological Optimization of In Situ Oil Shale Conversion Processing
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydrocarbon generation potential, insitu conversion processing, rock brittleness, sequence stratigraphy, Songliao Basin
The Songliao Basin contains some of the largest volumes of oil shales in China; however, these energy sources are located in areas covered by arable land, meaning that the best way of exploiting them is likely to be environmentally friendly in situ conversion processing (ICP). Whether the oil shales of the Songliao Basin in the Qingshankou Formation are suitable for ICP remain controversial. In this paper, through sequence stratigraphic correlations, three main thick oil shale layers (N1, N2, and N3) of the Sequence1 (Sq1) unit in the first member of Qingshankou Formation (K2qn1) are confirmed as consistently present throughout the Southeastern Uplift region of the basin. The spectral trend attributes reflect that the lake reached a maximum flood surface of the K2qn1 in N2 oil shale layer, and the total organic carbon (TOC) and Fischer assay (FA) oil yield are significantly increasing. The N2 and N3 oil shale layers were deposited in a high lake level environment associated with ingres... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: borehole heat exchangers, geotechnical properties, ground-coupled heat exchangers, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, thermal response test
The performance of ground heat exchanger systems depends on the knowledge of the thermal parameters of the ground, such as thermal conductivity, capacity, and diffusivity. The knowledge of these parameters often requires quite accurate experimental analysis, known as a thermal response test (TRT). In this paper, after a general analysis of the various available types of TRT and a study of the theoretical basics of the method, we explore the perspective of the definition of a simplified routine method of analysis based on the combination of a particular version of TRT and the routine geotechnical tests for the characterization of soil stratigraphy and the ground characteristics. Geotechnical analyses are indeed mandatory before the construction of new buildings, even if limited to 30 m below the ground level or foundation base when piles are needed. The idea of developing TRT in connection with geotechnical test activity has the objective of promoting the widespread use of in situ exper... [more]

A Metal Object Detection System with Multilayer Detection Coil Layouts for Electric Vehicle Wireless Charging
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: inductance variation, inductive power transfer, metal object detection, multi-layer detection coil, wireless charging
Non-radiative inductive power transfer is one of the most studied and commercially applied wireless charging technologies, where the magnetic field is employed as the medium for power transfer. In the wireless charging of electric vehicles, the strong magnetic field will heat up any metal items falling in the charging area due to eddy current induced in the metal objects, causing hazards like fire. Metal object detection (MOD) is necessary for the market penetration of inductive power transfer technology. This paper aims to improve the performance of systems that detect metal objects based on inductance variations. Two novel multi-layer detection coil layouts are proposed, which can not only cover the entire charging area without blind spots but can also be decoupled from the transmitter and receiver to minimize the influence of the magnetic field that is used for power transfer. Two mixed resonant circuits are proposed and proven to have better performance than parallel and series res... [more]

Keywords: automatic generation control, battery storage system, load forecast, reliability index, system frequency control
Risk in a power system’s ability to survive imminent disturbances without recourse to low operational cost and non-interruptive energy delivery remains the responsibility of every grid operator. Intermittencies in renewable energy and dynamic load variations influence the quality of power supply. The sudden changes affect the system frequency, compromising the reliability of the system grid; generation response to frequency regulation is momentous in such an incident. Slower response or smaller reserve capacity may cause a power shortage. This paper proposes a novel predictive scheme for a short-term operational reliability evaluation for system operations planning. The proposed method evaluates the operational reliability of system frequency whiles considering high renewable power penetration and energy storage system incorporation. Required energy generations, and other grid parameters, are modelled as stochastic inputs to the framework. We formulate a reliability index as a frequenc... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carrier selective contact, passivation, rear emitter heterojunction
In this research, simulations were performed to investigate the effects of carrier selective front contact (CSFC) layer and defect state of hydrogenated amorphous silicon passivation layer/n-type crystalline silicon interface in silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells employing the Automat for Simulation of hetero-structure (AFORS-HET) simulation program. The results demonstrated the effects of band offset determined by band bending at the interface of the CSFC layer/passivation layer. In addition, the nc-SiOx: H CSFC layer not only reduces parasitic absorption loss but also has a tunneling effect and field effect passivation. Furthermore, it increased the selectivity of contact. In the experimental cell, nc-SiOx:H was used as the CSFC layer, where efficiency of the SHJ solar cell was 22.77%. Our investigation shows that if a SiOx layer passivation layer is used, the device can achieve efficiency up to 25.26%. This improvement in the cell is mainly due to the enhancement in open circu... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: concentrated solar power, innovation, pilot plant, product deployment
Industries with fast-developing technologies and knowledge-intensive business services rely on the development of scientific knowledge for their growth. This is also true in the renewable energy industry such as in concentrating solar power (CSP) plants, which have undergone intense development and expansion in the last two decades. Yet knowledge generation is not sufficient; its dissemination and internalization by the industry is indispensable for new product development. This paper contributes to providing empirical evidence on the known link between knowledge development and firm growth. In 10 years the cost of electricity produced through CSP has decreased five-fold. This decrease has only been possible due to innovation projects developed through a complex network of research and development (R&D) collaborations and intense investment, both public and (to a greater extent) private. The article estimates energy flexibility provided to the electricity grid by integration of long-term thermal energy storage in buildings. To this end, a liquid sorption storage combined with a compression heat pump is studied for a single-family home. This combination acts as a double-stage heat pump comprised of a thermal and an electrical stage. It lowers the temperature lift to be overcome by the electrical heat pump and thus increases its coefficient of performance. A simplified model is used to quantify seasonal energy flexibility by means of electric load shifting evaluated with a monthly resolution. Results are presented for unlimited and limited storage capacity leading to a total seasonal electric load shift of 631.8 kWh/a and 181.7 kWh/a, respectively. This shift, referred to as virtual battery effect, provided through long-term thermal energy storage is large compared to typical electric battery capacities installed in buildings. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: solar cooling, solar energy, thermoacoustic heat engine
The thermoacoustic behavior of different typologies of porous cores is studied in this paper with the goal of finding the most suitable solution for small thermoacoustic devices, including solar driven air coolers and generators, which can be used in future buildings. Cores provided with circular pores, with rectangular slits and with arrays of parallel cylindrical pins are investigated. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: grid-connected, inverters, microinverter, photovoltaic, solar energy, three-phase
Microinverters are an essential part of the photovoltaic (PV) industry with significant exponential prevalence in new PV module architectures. However, electrolyte capacitors used to decouple double line frequency make the single-phase microinverters topologies the slightest unit in this promising industry. Three-phase microinverter topologies are the new trend in this industry because they do not have double-line frequency problems and they do not need the use of electrolyte capacitors. Moreover, these topologies can provide additional features such as four-wire operation. This paper presents a detailed discussion of the strong points of three-phase microinverters compared to single-phase counterparts. The developed topologies of three-phase microinverters are presented and evaluated based on a new classification based on the simplest topologies among dozens of existing inverters. Moreover, the paper considers the required standardized features of PV, grid, and the microinverter topol... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: double-diode model, fill factor loss analysis, parasitic resistance, PERC, recombination current density, temperature dependence
Since the temperature of a photovoltaic (PV) module is not consistent as it was estimated at a standard test condition, the thermal stability of the solar cell parameters determines the temperature dependence of the PV module. Fill factor loss analysis of crystalline silicon solar cell is one of the most efficient methods to diagnose the dominant problem, accurately. In this study, the fill factor analysis method and the double-diode model of a solar cell was applied to analyze the effect of J01, J02, Rs, and Rsh on the fill factor in details. The temperature dependence of the parameters was compared through the passivated emitter rear cell (PERC) of the industrial scale solar cells. As a result of analysis, PERC cells showed different temperature dependence for the fill factor loss of the J01 and J02 as temperatures rose. In addition, we confirmed that fill factor loss from the J01 and J02 at elevated temperature depends on the initial state of the solar cells. The verification of the... [more]

Keywords: bankruptcy, financial liquidity, group purchasing organizations, Polish energy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
European countries are increasingly using renewable energy. Poland is an outsider of such solutions. The Polish energy sector is primarily based on energy produced from coal. However, environmental changes and regulations of the European Union are forcing the increased use of energy from renewable sources. Renewable energy is an industry that is still developing in Poland. At the same time, Poland is a country where the political decisions of the government over the last few years have resulted in a significant limitation of the possibilities of renewable energy development. These actions have also resulted in lowering the profitability of the currently operating renewable energy enterprises, especially those from the sector of small and medium-sized enterprises. An opportunity for SMEs operating in the renewable energy sector is to merge into industry purchasing groups. Dynamic Effect of Input-Voltage Feedforward in Three-Phase Grid-Forming Inverters
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DC dynamics, extra element theorem, feedforward, grid forming, input admittance, input-to-output dynamics, VSI
Grid-connected and grid-forming inverters play essential roles in the utilization of renewable energy. One problem of such a converter system is the voltage deviations in the DC-link between the source and the inverter that can disrupt the inverter output voltage. A common method to prevent these voltage deviations is to apply an input-voltage feedforward control. However, the feedforward control has detrimental effects on the inverter dynamics. It is shown that the effect of the feedforward in the input-to-output dynamics is not ideal due to the delay in the digital control system. The delay affects the input-to-output dynamics at high frequencies, and only a minor improvement can be achieved by low-pass filtering the feedforward control signal. Furthermore, the feedforward control can remarkably affect the inverter input admittance, and therefore, impedance-based stability problems may arise at the DC interface. This paper proposes a method based on linearization and extra element th... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat exchange, heat mining rate, hot dry rocks, self-circulation wellbore, similarity analysis
Self-circulation wellbore is a new technique for geothermal development in hot dry rocks (HDR), which uses a U-shape channel composed of tubing and casing as the heat exchanger. In this study, a self-circulation wellbore in HDR on a laboratory scale was built, and a serial of experiments were conducted to investigate the heat exchange law and the influencing factors on the heat mining rate of the wellbore. A similarity analysis was also made to estimate the heat-mining capacity of the wellbore on a field scale. The experimental results show that the large thermal conductivity and heat capacity of granite with high temperature can contribute to a large heat-mining rate. A high injection rate can cause a high convective heat transfer coefficient in wellbore, while a balance is needed between the heat mining rate and the outlet temperature. An inner tubing with low thermal conductivity can significantly reduce the heat loss to the casing annulus. The similarity analysis indicates that a h... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combined design, efficiency analysis, Gauss pseudospectral method, integrated design, rocket-augmented, TBCC, trajectory optimization, turbine-based combined cycle engine
An integrated analysis method for a rocket-augmented turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) engine is proposed based on the trajectory optimization method of the Gauss pseudospectral. The efficiency and energy of the vehicles with and without the rocket are analyzed. Introducing an appropriate rocket to assist the TBCC-powered vehicle will reduce the total energy consumption of drag, and increase the vehicle efficiency in the transonic and the mode transition. It results in an increase in the total efficiency despite a reduction in engine efficiency. Therefore, introducing a rocket as the auxiliary power is not only a practical solution to enable flight over a wide-speed range when the TBCC is incapable but also probably an economical scheme when the the TBCC meets the requirements of thrust. When the vehicle drag is low, the rocket works for a short time and its optimal relative thrust is small. Thus, the TBCC combined with a booster rocket will be a more simple and suitable scheme.
