Performance Optimisation of Public Transport Networks Using AHP-Dependent Multi-Aspiration-Level Goal Programming
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: case selection, criterion aspiration-level, optimal solution, optimisation process, public transport network
This study proposes an optimisation approach to improve multiple-criteria aspiration-level public transportation performance by combining public transport criteria matrix analytic hierarchy process (PTCM-AHP) models and multi-aspiration-level goal programming. The approach uses the PTCM-AHP to calculate the system weights. Based on the weight values, the approach combines the multi-aspiration goal-level selection process in three different ways. The proposed approach was used to optimise public transportation networks in Bayswater, Cockburn, and Stonnington, Australia, to demonstrate the public transportation network performance optimisation process. By controlling the criteria goal value interval, this new approach combines decision-making plans and strategies to optimise various scenarios. The optimisation outcomes can be applied to provide guidelines for improving the performance of public transportation networks.

Development of a Control-Oriented Ignition Delay Model for GCI Combustion
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: CO2 reduction, combustion stability, control-oriented model, GCI, ignition delay, injection management, LTC
Increasingly stringent pollutant emission limits and CO2 reduction policies are forcing the automotive industry toward cleaner and decarbonized mobility. The goal is to achieve carbon neutrality within 2050 and limit global warming to 2 °C (possibly 1.5 °C) with respect to pre-industrial levels as stated in both the European Green Deal and the Paris Agreement and further reiterated at the COP26. With the aim of simultaneously reducing both pollutants and CO2 emissions, a large amount of research is currently carried out on low-temperature highly efficient combustions (LTC). Among these advanced combustions, one of the most promising is Gasoline Compression Ignition (GCI), based on the spontaneous ignition of a gasoline-like fuel. Nevertheless, despite GCI proving to be effective in reducing both pollutants and CO2 emissions, GCI combustion controllability represents the main challenge that hinders the diffusion of this methodology for transportation. Several works in the literature dem... [more]

An Optimized Solution for Fault Detection and Location in Underground Cables Based on Traveling Waves
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: circuit breakers, Fault Detection, fault location, Newton–Raphson analysis, wavelet transform
Faults in the power system affect the reliability, safety, and stability. Power-distribution systems are familiar with the different faults that can damage the overall performance of the entire system, from which they need to be effectively cleared. Underground power systems are more complex and require extra accuracy in fault detection and location for optimum fault management. Slow processing and the unavailability of a protection zone for relay coordination are concerns in fault detection and location, as these reduce the performance of power-protection systems. In this regard, this article proposes an optimized solution for a fault detection and location framework for underground cables based on a discrete wavelet transform (DWT). The proposed model supports area detection, the identification of faulty sections, and fault location. To overcome the abovementioned facts, we optimize the relay coordination for the overcurrent and timing relays. The proposed protection zone has two seq... [more]

Neutral-Point Voltage Balancing Method for Three-Phase Three-Level Dual-Active-Bridge Converters
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dead zone, dual-active-bridge, hysteresis control, neutral-point voltage balancing, three-level circuit, three-phase three-level dual-active-bridge
Three-phase three-level dual-active-bridge (3L-DAB3) converters are a potential topology for high-voltage and high-power applications. Neutral-point voltage balancing is a complex and important issue for three-level (3L) circuits. Compared with the single-phase 3L dual-active-bridge converter, the self-balancing capability of the 3L-DAB3 is limited. To guarantee the reliability of the converter, a neutral-point voltage balancing method for the 3L-DAB3 is proposed in this paper. First, the neutral-point voltage balancing principle of the 3L-DAB3 is analyzed. Then, the relationship between the duty ratio adjustment and injected neutral-point charge is described. In order to guarantee accurate neutral-point voltage balance, the proposed balancing method adopts a sign-hysteresis control with a dead zone. The dead zone is responsible for whether the duty ratio adjustment is activated, and the sign-hysteresis control guarantees a correct adjustment direction. The proposed neutral-point volta... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: constant-conduction-duty-cycle (CCDC) strategy, current fed, minimum-output-current-ripple (MOCR) strategy, three-level phase-shift full-bridge (TL-PSFB)
Electrified ports using medium-voltage DC (MVDC) renewable energy microgrids require current-fed dc/dc converters in application scenarios such as battery or ultracapacitor charging units and hydrogen production systems. This paper designs a three-level phase-shift full-bridge (TL-PSFB) converter that interfaces with the MVDC microgrid. Its operation in the current source mode requires a wide output voltage range and small output current ripple. Firstly, the dual-output TL-PSFB topology is introduced, and the principle of phase-shift pulse width modulation (PS-PWM) is presented. Secondly, the principle of the traditional constant-conduction-duty-cycle (CCDC) strategy is analyzed. Then, a minimum-output-current-ripple (MOCR) strategy is proposed by analyzing the relationship between output current ripple, conducting-duty cycle, and phase-shift duty cycle, and a constant current control combined with the MOCR strategy is designed. The output current ripple of the MOCR strategy is smaller... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: compound controller, on-board charger, power factor correction, single-phase and three-phase compatibility
This paper presents a single-phase and three-phase compatible isolated on-board charger for electric vehicles. The charger is compatible with the single-phase and three-phase AC voltage input and is composed of two-stage circuits. Based on the three-phase six-switch power factor correction (PFC) circuit, by switching on and off, the front stage is transformed into a cascade topology of a totem-pole PFC circuit and boost circuit. The rear stage is a full-bridge LLC resonant converter. In the single-phase or three-phase working mode, the front-stage control strategy is a double closed-loop control. The current inner loop controller is improved for the three-phase six-switch PFC circuit. The PI controller and repetitive controller are connected in parallel to form the current inner loop compound controller, which can effectively reduce the total harmonic distortion of the input current. By using simulation software MATLAB/Simulink, the circuit model was built. The simulation results verif... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bidirectional DC/DC converter, Energy Storage, LLC, photovoltaic
Bidirectional DC/DC converters are widely adopted in new energy power generation systems. Because of the low conversion efficiency and non-isolation for conventional, bidirectional DC/DC converters in the photovoltaic energy storage complementary system, this paper proposes a bidirectional isolation LLC converter topology, with compensating inductance for the energy storage system; it has excellent characteristics, such as wide input voltage range and soft switching in full-load range. First, an AC equivalent model based on the fundamental wave equivalent method is established to derive the voltage gain. Meanwhile, a small signal model is also built to design a reasonably closed-looped controller. Finally, the improved bidirectional LLC resonant converter is applied to the photovoltaic energy storage complementary system. The correctness and feasibility for the bidirectional LLC converter topology under the proposed charging and discharging control strategy of the DC bus are verified b... [more]

Design and Assessment of a LIDAR-Based Model Predictive Wind Turbine Control
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: LIDAR wind information, model predictive control (MPC), wind turbine control
The development of the Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology has enabled wider options for wind turbine control, in particular regarding disturbance rejection. The LIDAR measurements provide a spatial, preview wind information, based on which the controller has a better chance to cope with the wind disturbance before it affects the turbine operation. In this paper, a model predictive controller for above-rated wind turbine control was developed with the use of pseudo-LIDAR wind measurements data. A predictive control algorithm was developed based on a linearised wind turbine model, in which the disturbance from the incoming wind was computed by the LIDAR simulator. The optimal control action was applied to the nonlinear turbine model. The developed controller was compared with the baseline control and a previously developed LIDAR-assisted control combining a feedback-and-feedforward design. Our simulation studies on a 5 MW nonlinear wind turbine model, under different wind con... [more]

Model Predictive Control for Photovoltaic Plants with Non-Ideal Energy Storage Using Mixed Integer Linear Programming
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: battery energy storage system, MILP, MPC, photovoltaic systems
This paper proposes a model-based predictive control strategy based on mixed-integer linear programming for a photovoltaic power plant with battery energy storage. The control objective is to maximize the revenues from energy delivered from both photovoltaic panels and batteries to the grid in a deregulated electricity market. For each control interval, the proposed algorithm incorporates information on solar radiation, market prices, and the state of charge of the batteries to determine the intervals of energy injection into the grid to maximize the economic benefits. The proposed strategy considers the rate-based variable efficiency in the battery model and time-varying energies prices, thus providing a more general implementation than previous schemes proposed in the literature for the same purpose. Simulations considering the operational procedures of the Spanish market as a case study show that, by integrating the battery efficiency in the model, the proposed control strategy incr... [more]

Harmonic Compensation via Grid-Tied Three-Phase Inverter with Variable Structure I&I Observer-Based Control Scheme
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: grid-tied inverters, harmonic distortion, sliding mode control
The power inverter topologies are indispensable devices to incorporate distributed generation schemes, like photovoltaic energy sources into the AC main. The nonlinear behavior of the power inverter draws a challenge when it comes to their control policy, rendering linear control methods often inadequate for the application. The control complexity can be further increased by the LCL filters, which are the preferred way to mitigate the current ripple caused by the inverter switching. This paper presents a robust variable structure control for a three-phase grid-tied inverter with an LCL filter. As well to the benefits of the sliding mode control (SMC), which is one of the control methods applied by power converters founded in literature, the proposed control scheme features a novel partial state observer based on the immersion and invariance technique, which thanks to its inherent robustness and speed of convergence is adequate for this application. This observer eliminates the need for... [more]

3D Modeling of Fracture-Cave Reservoir from a Strike-Slip Fault-Controlled Carbonate Oilfield in Northwestern China
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: 3D reservoir modeling, fracture-cave reservoir, strike-slip fault, tensor-thickness attribute, thin-likelihood attribute, ultra-depth oilfield
A giant strike-slip fault-controlled Fuman Oilfield has been found in the Ordovician fractured carbonates of the Tarim Basin. However, conventional seismic methods are hardly able to distinguish the fractured reservoir and its connectivity in the ultra-depth (>7000 m) carbonate fault zones. We propose thin-likelihood and tensor-thickness process methods to describe the fracture network and large cave reservoir, respectively. Together with the two methods for 3D visualization of fracture-cave reservoirs, we had an application in the ultra-deep well deployment in Fuman Oilfield. The results show that the fracture network and cave reservoir can be 3D-imaged more clearly than conventional methods. The fracture network and cave reservoir show distinct segmentation by the fault assemblage in Fuman Oilfield. Furthermore, 3D modeling is favorable for the reservoir connectivity description along the carbonate fault zones. There are three distinct reservoir models: fault core-, fault damage zone... [more]

A Discrete Current Controller for High Power-Density Synchronous Machines
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: digital current control, power density, saturation, synchronous machines
This paper proposes a complex vector discrete current controller based on the flux-linkage data to solve the current loop oscillation problem of high power-density synchronous machines. An offline flux-linkage table measurement method considering cross saturation is introduced, and the data are used to deduce the symmetrical complex vector model. The influence of latch and delay of inverters on the line voltage of machines at high speed is analyzed and compensated during the controller design process. The proposed controller, which only needs to tune one parameter, can deal with the inductance mismatch issues caused by iron core saturation. The controller can be adopted in the current loop of saturated salient or nonsalient synchronous machines. Simulations and experiments have verified the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Keywords: energy management, fuel cell, fuzzy logic control strategy, power following strategy, tabu search algorithm
To solve the serious pollution problems of traditional fuel tractors and the short continuous operation time of pure electric tractors, a hybrid tractor with fuel cell as the primary power source and battery as the auxiliary power source is proposed. A novel energy management strategy was also designed, which integrates thermostat control strategy, power following strategy, and fuzzy logic control. The energy management strategy utilizes the advantages of different algorithms and realizes the rational distribution of fuel cell and battery output power. Water-in-Oil Emulsions Separation Using a Controlled Multi-Frequency Acoustic Field at an Operating Facility
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: crude oil, de-emulsification device, ultrasonic, water-in-oil emulsion (W/OE)
Separation of water-in-oil emulsion is a significant part of the cost of oil production due to the use of expensive demulsifiers and additional heating of the emulsion by burning associated petroleum gas. The article discusses an acoustic method that enables the increasing of the rate of separation of the emulsion. In field conditions, tests were carried out in which the efficiency of separation in the acoustic field was determined depending on the temperature of the product, the concentration of the demulsifier, and the frequency and time of exposure to the emitter. The results obtained allow us to talk about a significant reduction in the consumption of demulsifiers, a decrease in the influence of temperature on the phase separation process and an increase in the efficiency of oil treatment at existing facilities.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: coal sorption capacity, methane content, methane emission, Poland, Rydułtowy mine, Upper Silesian Coal Basin
Methane emissions into mine workings and the atmosphere are still a significant environmental and work safety problem. Since 2000, the Rydułtowy coal mine, located in the western part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, has been struggling with significant methane emissions compared to the previous period. The distribution of the methane content in coal seams was analysed, and the factors that influenced it were reviewed. Then, the annual variability in methane emissions in mining excavations was investigated, and the depth of coal extraction was linked to methane conditions and the time of mining works. It has been shown that the currently observed distribution of methane in coal seams is the result of, inter alia, the geological development of the western part of the basin, the lithological character of coal-bearing Carboniferous deposits and overburden, and fault tectonics. The sorption capacity of coal seams decreases with increasing temperature and the coal rank. The amount of metha... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC capacitor, frequency regulation, kinetic energy, offshore wind farm, VSC-HVDC
Voltage source converter based high voltage DC system (VSC-HVDC) has become a very promising solution to integrate offshore wind farm. However, the equivalent inertia of the modern power system with large renewable energy integration becomes small, which will arouse some frequency stability problems. To tackle this problem, this paper proposes an improved frequency regulation strategy for VSC-HVDC integrated offshore wind farm. Adaptive PI and RBFNN PID Current Decoupling Controller for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drives: Hardware-Validated Results
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive control, parameter uncertainties, PID control, PMSM, proportional-integral (PI) control, RBFNN-PID term
This study presents an adaptive proportional-integral (PI) and radial basis function neural network proportional-integral-derivative (PID) current control solution for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. The proposed controller includes four controls: a decoupling term, a PI term, a supervision term, and a radial basis neural network-PID (RBFNN-PID) term. The first control term makes up the nonlinear factors, the second automatically adjusts the control gains, the third guarantees the system stability, and the fourth optimizes the PID parameters to achieve optimal system performance. Unlike off-line tuned PID controllers, the adaptive controller includes an adaptive tuning method for the on-line adjustment of control gain based on the gradient descent strategy. Therefore, it can be adjusted and handle the uncertainty of any system parameters. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: choice experiment, demand response, demand side management, direct load control, dynamic electricity tariff, electricity, rebound peak, time-of-use tariff, willingness to accept
While automation helps to increase load-shifting, the combination of automation with time-of-use (TOU) or critical-peak prices (CPP) may lead to rebound peaks at the beginning of low-tariff periods which may exceed the original peak. Using a discrete choice experiment with a representative sample of 696 Swiss consumers, we find that a tariff menu including (i) a flat price with direct load control (DLC) and (ii) a time-of-use tariff without direct load control could avoid this problem. The majority (57%) of mostly younger customers, which could be interested in automation would likely sign up for a DLC with flat prices, while the remaining customers would either chose a TOU tariff with manual load control (28%) or avoid any form of load-shifting incentives (15%).

Keywords: linear generator, modular multilevel converter, wave energy converter
In this paper we propose a modular multilevel converter for a linear generator for a wave energy converter. The coils of this generator are individually controlled to improve energy harvesting performance. This topology involves two stages. The first stage uses a full-bridge to control the harvested current with a reference generated by means of an MPPT method. The second stage uses a half-bridge to control the voltage of the DC-link and the output current. Furthermore, multilevel modular converters allow the generation of a medium DC voltagethat reduces the losses in energy transmission lines from offshore to a coupling common point on the shore.

An Improved Sliding Mode Control Method to Increase the Speed Stability of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: permanent magnet synchronous motor, saturation function, SMC, speed control, torque control
A permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) plays an important role in the operation performance of an electric vehicle. In order to increase the speed stability of PMSMs, an improved sliding mode control (SMC) method is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the control process of a PMSM is divided into parts, which are the torque closed-loop control and speed closed-loop control. Secondly, an integrated control method with proportional integral (PI) and inverter switching frequency is adopted in order to increase the torque performance of the PMSM. Lastly, compared with the traditional SMC method, an improved SMC method with saturation function is proposed in order to decrease the speed fluctuation of the PMSM from 7.7% to 5.9%, thereby increasing the speed stability of the PMSM. The results of the experimental test indicate that both the speed stability and starting performance of the PMSM are increased by the improved SMC method.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: IFOPDT model, integrating process, level control, thermal powerplant steam separator, tuning PD/PID
The paper presents an analysis of water-level control in a thermal power plant (TPP) steam separator. This control structure is vital for the entire plant’s stable, reliable, and efficient operation. This process belongs to processes with an integrator because it concerns a level-control issue, and the control variable is the feedwater flow. Operating Hydrogen-Based Energy Storage Systems in Wind Farms for Smooth Power Injection: A Penalty Fees Aware Model Predictive Control
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: hydrogen-based energy storage systems, mixed-logic dynamic modeling, Model Predictive Control, optimal operations, power smoothing, wind farms
Smooth power injection is one of the possible services that modern wind farms could provide in the not-so-far future, for which energy storage is required. Indeed, this is one among the three possible operations identified by the International Energy Agency (IEA)-Hydrogen Implementing Agreement (HIA) within the Task 24 final report, that may promote their integration into the main grid, in particular when paired to hydrogen-based energy storages. In general, energy storage can mitigate the inherent unpredictability of wind generation, providing that they are deployed with appropriate control algorithms. On the contrary, in the case of no storage, wind farm operations would be strongly affected, as well as their economic performances since the penalty fees wind farm owners/operators incur in case of mismatches between the contracted power and that actually delivered. This paper proposes a Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm that operates a Hydrogen-based Energy Storage System (HESS... [more]

Embedded FPGA Controllers for Current Compensation Based on Modern Power Theories
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active parallel power filter, FPGA-in-the-loop, modern power theories
This work compares the performance of two embedded FPGA controllers that can be used in Active Parallel Power Filters (APPF). Both controllers are validated through the FPGA-in-the-loop (FIL) technique, the algorithm’s synthesis is accomplished using the Quartus II® platform, and the board used is from Altera®—Cyclone IV DE2-115. The main difference between the controllers resides in the power theories used to obtain the currents for compensation. The results confirm that the FPGA is a suitable digital device for the parallel operation of multiple compensators and calculation stages, being a viable solution for the requirements imposed in the control of APPF. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the FIL technique for validating the operation of digital circuits and control systems is also confirmed. Finally, a comparison between the processing costs of each of the implemented power theories is presented to guide novel proposals.
