Second Harmonic Current Reduction Control for Two-Stage Inverter with a New Inductor Current Feedback Path
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bandpass filter, inductor current feedback, second harmonic current (SHC), two-stage inverter, virtual resistor
The instantaneous output power of the two-stage inverter pulsates at twice the output frequency, resulting in the second harmonic current (SHC) in the front-end dc-dc converter. To reduce the SHC in the inductance branch while maintaining good dynamic performance, this paper proposes a control scheme based on a new inductor current feedback path in the front-end buck converter. In the scheme, through the equivalent gain, the virtual resistor, and the bandpass filter, the inductor current is fed to the front of the voltage regulator. The feedback function simplification is studied and the implementation of the proposed scheme is illustrated. With considerations of both reducing the SHC and improving the dynamic performance, the parameter design approach for the feedback function is also presented for the proposed SHC reduction control scheme, and the performance analysis and comparison from the viewpoint of output impedance are provided. The simulation model and the prototype of a 10 kW... [more]

Sector Coupling Potential of a District Heating Network by Consideration of Residual Load and CO2 Emissions
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: CO2 emissions, district heating networks, residual load, sector coupling
The growing share of fluctuating renewable electricity production within the German energy system causes the increasing necessity for flexible consumers, producers, and storage technologies to balance supply and demand. District heating networks with combined heat and power units, Power-to-Heat applications, and thermal energy storage capacities can serve as one of these flexible options. In this context, a simulation model of the district heating network of the rural community Dollnstein, Germany, was built. With the residual load of different regional areas (Germany, Bavaria, Eichstätt, Dollnstein) it is investigated, how the heat generators can operate in an electricity market beneficial way. Two different control algorithms were evaluated: Due to a correlation between the residual loads and the CO2 emissions of the electricity mix, the CO2 savings achieved by this control algorithm are determined. Another way to operate electricity market beneficial is to consider the current CO2 e... [more]

Keywords: backstepping control, direct power control, mppt control, permanent magnet synchronous generator, predictive currents control, sliding mode control, wind energy conversion system
There has always been a high expectation that wind generation systems would capture maximum power and integrate properly with the grid. Utilizing a wind generation system with increased management to meet the growing electricity demand is a clever way of accomplishing this. However, wind power generation systems require a sophisticated, unique, and dependable control mechanism in order to achieve stability and efficiency. To improve the operation of the wind energy conversion method, researchers are continually addressing the obstacles that presently exist. Therefore, it is necessary to know which control can improve the whole system’s performance and ensure its successful integration into the network, despite the variable conductions. This article examines wind turbine control system techniques and controller trends related to the permanent magnet synchronous generator. It presents an overview of the most popular control strategies that have been used to control the PMSG wind power co... [more]

Modeling of a Hybrid Fuel Cell Powertrain with Power Split Logic for Onboard Energy Management Using a Longitudinal Dynamics Simulation Tool
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: alternative propulsion, control strategy, energy consumption, mathematical modelling, performance prediction
This work aims to develop a mathematical model for the simulation of a fuel cell (FC) hybrid powertrain. The work starts from modeling a single cell to obtain information on the entire FC stack. The model obtained was integrated into a simulation tool presented in the literature that simulates the longitudinal dynamics of auxiliary power unit hybrid electric vehicles and fully electric vehicles. Therefore, the integrated model allows the simulation of hybrid vehicles equipped with FC and a battery pack that acts as a peak power source. The tool simulates the mechanical and electrical behavior of the vehicle, introducing an investigation of the power flows relating to the FC and batteries. An appropriate power split logic has been implemented, allowing the correct management of the power distribution between the FC and the batteries. The importance of analyzing FC vehicles’ behavior arises from the recent necessity to find alternative propulsion systems, overcoming the range problems as... [more]

Comparison of Phase-Shifting Transformers Properties
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: phase angle, phase-shifting transformers, power flows
This article presents different phase shifting transformers (PSTs) types and their influence on the transmitted active power and energy parameters. Typical PSTs, both symmetrical (SPST) and asymmetrical (APST), are compared to the asymmetrical controllable PST (ACPST). The ACPST allows for regulating both quadrature and longitudinal voltage, which makes this type interesting in practical applications and power flow optimizations. The collected data enable a direct comparison of these PSTs’ properties. APST allows high power transfer, but the voltage increase in some cases cannot be acceptable. SPST type in taken tests has the best properties concerning the transferred power, output voltage, and internal voltage drop. ACPST, in its primary mode, can be efficiently used as a substitute for the SPST. However, in some range of injected quadrature voltages, it can achieve even better properties than the SPST. The laboratory and simulation tests allow the development of the ACPST regulation... [more]

Integrated Approach to Diagnostics of Failures and Cyber-Attacks in Industrial Control Systems
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cyber-attack detection, cyber-attacks isolation, failure detection
This paper is concerned with the issue of the diagnostics of process faults and the detection of cyber-attacks in industrial control systems. This problem is of significant importance to energy production and distribution, which, being part of critical infrastructure, is usually equipped with process diagnostics and, at the same time, is often subject to cyber-attacks. A commonly used approach would be to separate the two types of anomalies. The detection of process faults would be handled by a control team, often with a help of dedicated diagnostic tools, whereas the detection of cyber-attacks would be handled by an information technology team. In this article, it is postulated here that the two can be usefully merged together into one, comprehensive, anomaly detection system. For this purpose, firstly, the main types of cyber-attacks and the main methods of detecting cyber-attacks are being reviewed. Subsequently, in the analogy to “process fault”—a term well established in process d... [more]

Optimal Design of Power-On Downshift Control of Series-Parallel Hybrid Transmission Based on Motor Active Speed Regulation
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: motor speed regulation, power-on downshift control, shift impact, two-speed series-parallel hybrid transmission
Multi-speed transmission is the main development direction of hybrid transmission, which has brought higher shift quality requirements than traditional fuel vehicle transmission. However, there is less research on the shifting control of hybrid transmission, especially for the shifting control of dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT), which uses the wet clutch as a shift element. This paper studies the power-on downshift process of a two-speed series-parallel hybrid transmission, proposes a shifting control strategy based on motor active speed regulation, and deeply analyzes the causes of maximum impact during the shifting process. The results show that the reverse torque produced in the process of eliminating the remaining slip is the root cause of the maximum impact. On this basis, two optimization strategies are proposed to reduce the shift impact and improve the shift quality. The simulation results show that the proposed optimization strategies can effectively suppress the shift imp... [more]

Study on the Compatibility between Combined Control of Channel Plugging and Foam Flooding and Heterogeneous Reservoirs—Taking Bohai Z Oilfield as an Example
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: combined profile control, compatibility, differential, heterogeneity, recovery
With the oilfield developed to a later stage and its heterogeneity gradually becoming more serious, the adaptability of conventional profile control technologies for the reservoir becomes worse and worse. Therefore, the fitness of compatibility between combined patterns of profile control and target reservoir becomes an important factor for the efficient development of the oil field. Due to the importance of compatibility between the profile control and reservoir property, research on the remaining oil recovery with combined patterns of profile control and foam flooding were carried out. The experimental results showed that the combined profile control is highly consistent with the target reservoir. With a little lower initial viscosity (28.3−40.9 mPa·s), the channel plugging system is easy to inject. Due to the addition of a polymer, the reinforced foam is not easy to defoam when transporting in the pore throats of the core sample, and its spontaneous adaptability makes it match with... [more]

Keywords: on-load tap-charger, power quality, reactive power compensation, transformer complex control
The application of on-load tap-charger (OLTC) transformer technology has become the most direct and effective way to solve the voltage fluctuation of power grid. With the development of active distribution technology, the research focus of on-load voltage regulation technology has gradually turned to the development direction of arc free, fast and intelligent. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: CO2 gas reservoir, controlling factors, genesis, Hailar Basin
Gas reservoirs with high CO2 have been found in several wells in the Hailar Basin. In this paper, a composition analysis, stable carbon isotope analysis, and a rare gas helium isotope 3He/4He and argon isotope 40Ar/36Ar analysis were carried out. These comprehensive analyses show that the CO2 in the Hailar Basin is inorganic-origin gas, which generally has the characteristics of crust−mantle-mixed CO2, and the fraction of helium of mantle source can reach 15.12~18.76%. There are various types of CO2 gas reservoirs. CO2 gas mainly comes from deep crust. The distribution of gas reservoirs is mainly controlled by deep faults and volcanic rocks, as well as by reservoir properties and preservation conditions. Magmatic rocks provide gas source conditions for the formation of inorganic CO2 reservoirs. Deep−large faults provide the main migration channels for CO2 gas. A Concept of Risk Prioritization in FMEA of Fluid Power Components
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: flow control valve, fluid power, FMEA, risk prioritization
FMEA is a widely used tool for decades and is also used as an industrial standard. However, there are two main drawbacks of this analysis that have been specified from the beginning. The first one is risk prioritization, which is expressed by a risk priority number (RPN). The RPN is a product of three factors with equal weight: severity (S), occurrence (O), and detection (D), which may produce equal risk priority for different combinations of S, O, and D. The second is the uncertainties caused by converting linguistic terms into quantitative data. The essential data used in the FMEA strongly depend on subjective experts’ opinions, knowledge, and experience. For decades, various attempts of overcoming these weaknesses have been made, not only by academics but also by industry. The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA) have created an FMEA handbook that defines action priority (AP) depending on the combination of severity, occurrence, and detect... Minimizing Energy Consumption and Powertrain Cost of Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles with Consideration of Different Driving Cycles and SOC Ranges
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy consumption, FCHV, PMP optimal control, powertrain cost
Hydrogen consumption is an important performance indicator of fuel cell hybrid vehicles (FCHVs). Previous studies have investigated fuel consumption minimization both under different driving cycles and using various power management strategies. However, different constrains on battery state of charge (SOC) ranges can also affect fuel consumption dramatically. In this study, we develop a power-source sizing model based on the Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle (PMP) to minimize the fuel consumption of FCHVs, considering different driving cycles (i.e., FTP-72 and US06) and SOC ranges (conservative 50−60% and aggressive 20−80%). The different driving cycles and SOC ranges present the real-world circumstances of driving FCHVs to some extent. Fuel consumptions are compared both under different driving cycles and using different SOC ranges. The simulation results show an effective power size map, with outlines of an ineffective sizing zone and an inefficient sizing zone based on vehicle performa... [more]

Mathematical Model Derivation and Experimental Verification of Novel Consequent-Pole Adjustable Speed PM Motor
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adjustable speed, consequent-pole, field weakening, permanent magnet motor, synchronous motor, voltage equation
This paper proposes a novel consequent-pole-type PM motor having a structure different from that of conventional consequent-pole-type PM motors. The proposed rotor structure is composed of a magnetic pole pair using a permanent magnet and an image-pole pair using a high permeability core. The windings facing the magnetic pole pair and the image-pole pair are connected in series in the rotor structure, the three-phase synchronous impedance is balanced, and the d-axis inductance is increased. Therefore, compared with the conventional consequent-pole type, the field weakening operation can be performed efficiently with a lower d-axis current. These advantages make it possible to expand the operating range during field weakening. Furthermore, to fix the driving control method of the proposed consequent-pole PM motor, the voltage equation of the proposed motor is derived and verified by analysis and experiment. In addition, the essential characteristics of the proposed motor were compared w... [more]

Fault Detection Method via k-Nearest Neighbor Normalization and Weight Local Outlier Factor for Circulating Fluidized Bed Boiler with Multimode Process
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Fault Detection, fluidized bed boiler, local outlier factor, weighted normalization
In modern complex industrial processes, mode changes cause unplanned shutdowns, potentially shortening the lifespan of key equipment and incurring significant maintenance costs. To avoid this problem, a method that can detect the fault of equipment operating in various modes is required. Therefore, we propose a novel fault detection method that uses the k-nearest neighbor normalization-based weight local outlier factor (WLOF). The proposed method performs local normalization using neighbors to consider possible mode changes in the normal data and WLOF is used for fault detection. In contrast to statistical methods, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and independent component analysis (ICA), the local outlier factor (LOF) uses the density of neighbors. However, because LOF is significantly affected by the distance between its neighbors, the weight is multiplied proportionally to the distance between each neighbor to improve the fault detection performance of the LOF. The efficie... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bidirectional long short term memory (BiLSTM), fault detection and diagnosis (FDD), kernel PCA (KPCA), wind energy conversion (WEC)
The current work presents an effective fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) technique in wind energy converter (WEC) systems. The proposed FDD framework merges the benefits of kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) model and the bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) classifier. In the developed FDD approach, the KPCA model is applied to extract and select the most effective features, while the BiLSTM is utilized for classification purposes. The developed KPCA-based BiLSTM approach involves two main steps: feature extraction and selection, and fault classification. The KPCA model is developed in order to select and extract the most efficient features and the final features are fed to the BiLSTM to distinguish between different working modes. Different simulation scenarios are considered in this study in order to show the robustness and performance of the developed technique when compared to the conventional FDD methods. Keywords: aeration, control strategy, dissolved oxygen, sewage treatment plant, wastewater treatment
Wastewater treatment is an energy-intensive process for treating liquid-phase pollutants in urban settlements. The aerobic processes of the biological treatment involve a significant air demand. An optimal control strategy could be used to minimize the amount of excess air entering the system due to safety factors applied in the design procedures. A plant-wide mechanistic modeling approach including an activated sludge model and one-dimensional settler model was proposed as an effective tool for predicting the actual air demand and for selecting the optimal aeration strategy. In this study, a sewage treatment plant receiving strong influent flow was investigated. At the sludge ages of 14−18 days, the plant was capable of achieving a 90% organic matter reduction and 85% nutrient reduction. By applying a constant dissolved oxygen concentration of 1.5 mg/L, the air demand decreased by 25%, which could be further increased by 10% if the cascade ammonium control approach was applied at peak... Virtual Inertia Adaptive Control Strategy of ESU in DC Microgrid
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: constant power load, energy storage system, static stability analysis, virtual inertia control
With the increasingly obvious DC characteristics at both ends of the source and load sides of the low-voltage distribution network, the application scenarios of low-voltage DC microgrid gradually appear. Compared with the AC system, the DC microgrid has the characteristics of low inertia, weak damping, and poor anti-disturbance capabilities, all of which are important for improving operational stability. A virtual inertia adaptive control approach for fast-tracking energy storage under varied disturbances is presented using energy storage as a virtual inertia unit. Firstly, a stability analysis model including constant power load is constructed for the low-voltage DC microgrid; then, the control logic of the virtual inertia of the energy storage system is designed. Finally, the corresponding model is built in MATLAB/SIMULINK and the experiment platform to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Application of a Tuned Inductor in a DC Power Supply with an Active Compensation Function
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: converter control, distortion power, parallel active filter, reactive power, tuned inductive filter
This work focuses on the use of a one-phase direct current (DC) power supply equipped with a shunt active filter feature, which enabled the possibility of compensation (minimisation) of reactive and distortion power, generated by a group of loads, that was connected to the same power grid node as the power supply. A tuned inductor, which was included at the input of the controlled current source (constituting the main part of the power supply) allowed for an improvement in the quality of the compensation process, compared to a device with a fixed inductive filter This resulted in a visible reduction of the nonlinear distortions of the grid current. The improvement was made possible by extending the frequency response of the current source, which allowed to increase the dynamics of the current changes at the input of the power supply. This solution represents a new approach to such power devices. This work describes the principle of operation of the proposed converter solution and prese... [more]

A Novel Proposal for Optimal Performance of Blanket Gas System for FPSOs
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: blow-by gas, control strategy, crude oil, feed-forward control, FPSO, inert gas, topside
The energy required for the transportation of raw materials and the production of most manufactured goods depends on crude oil. For these reasons, FPSOs (Floating, Production, Storage, and Offloading) have become the primary production units of crude oil offshore. It is leading to an increase in the number and expanding of the production and storage facilities of the FPSOs. An increase in the oil production at the topside facilities of FPSOs will contain more gases, which leads to a rise in blow-by gas. Changes to the blanket gas system may be necessary as the flow rate of the blow-by gas is expected to increase. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a novel blanket gas system with a proper control method for controlling the cargo tank pressure when the blow-by gas is occurring. Unlike the existing system, in this proposal, the purge header that supplies the inert gas is possible for a use of the vent purpose in the situation where the blow-by gas is generated. Surrounding rock control and support stability in the process of coal seam mining in ultra-large height mining face are the key to normal mine operation. In this study, the roof movement and deformation of an ultra-large height mining face are analyzed, and the working resistance of the ultra-large height mining face is obtained by introducing the equivalent immediate roof. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: complex-vector-filter, grid-connected, harmonic current, photovoltaic (PV), voltage stability
The research presented in this paper explains how the complex-vector-filter (CVF) method can help in minimizing the current harmonic of a grid-tied photovoltaic system. In fact, the harmonic-free positive sequence (HFPS) load current is used to produce referential sinusoidal currents. This control stabilizes the grid’s currents under unbalanced load currents, as well as mitigates undesirable harmonic load currents, while feeding clean active power to the grid. Thanks to the proposed controller, the performance, such as robustness, as well as the stability and dynamics of the CVF are more effective compared to the proportional-integral (PI) with phase-locked-loop (PLL) controller. Moreover, the CVF ensures robustness and stability during the synchronization between the photovoltaic (PV) generator and the utility grid system. The PI&PLL control presents higher active and reactive power fluctuations during synchronization. On the other hand, the CVF ensures the elimination of the reactive... [more]
