Dynamic Characteristics and Successive Start-Up Control Strategy Optimization of Pumped Storage Units under Low-Head Extreme Conditions
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: ‘S’ characteristics, fractional order PID controller (FOPID), low water head conditions, multi-objective optimization, pumped storage units (PSUs), successive start-up
With inherent ‘S’ characteristics and the one-tunnel-with-two-units arrangement of the pump-turbine, hydraulic transient changes in the successive start-up process are complex, and the optimal control is difficult. This paper aims to study the dynamic characteristics and successive start-up control strategy optimization of two hydraulic couplings pumped storage units (PSUs) under low-head extreme conditions. Firstly, an accurate model of two hydraulic coupling PSUs’ successive start-up is established. Based on this model, the influence of the interval time of successive start-up on the dynamic characteristics of PSUs is carried out. It is shown that the change of the interval time of the successive start-up (ΔT) of the two PSUs has a significant impact on the dynamic response stability of the low-head start-up. If ΔT is more than 40 s, the hydraulic oscillation and speed fluctuation of the PSUs deteriorate. Secondly, with the different controller parameters for the two PSUs, a novel mu... [more]

Modeling and Stability Analysis of Distributed Secondary Control Scheme for Stand-Alone DC Microgrid Applications
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current sharing, DC microgrid, distributed secondary control, Optimization, stability analysis, voltage regulation
Stand-alone DC microgrids have multiple distributed generation (DG) sources that meet the required demand (load) by using droop control to achieve load (current) sharing between the DGs. The use of droop control leads to a voltage drop at the DC bus. This paper presents a distributed secondary control scheme to simultaneously ensure current sharing between the DGs and regulate the DC bus voltage. The proposed control scheme eliminates the voltage deviation and ensures balanced current sharing by combining the voltage and current errors in the designed secondary control loop. A new flight-based artificial bee colony optimization algorithm is proposed. This selects the parameters of the distributed secondary control scheme to achieve the objectives of the proposed controller. A state−space model of the DC microgrid is developed by using eigenvalue observation to test the impacts of the proposed optimized distributed secondary controller on the stability of the DC microgrid system. A real... [more]

Advances in Fault Condition Monitoring for Solar Photovoltaic and Wind Turbine Energy Generation: A Review
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault conditions, fault diagnosis methodologies, photovoltaic systems, renewable energy generation, wind turbines
Renewable energy-based power generation technologies are becoming more and more popular since they represent alternative solutions to the recent economic and environmental problems that modern society is facing. In this sense, the most widely spread applications for renewable energy generation are the solar photovoltaic and wind generation. Once installed, typically outside, the wind generators and photovoltaic panels suffer the environmental effects due to the weather conditions in the geographical location where they are placed. This situation, along with the normal operation of the systems, cause failures in their components, and on some occasions such problems could be difficult to identify and hence to fix. Thus, there are generated energy production stops bringing as consequence economical losses for investors. Therefore, it is important to develop strategies, schemes, and techniques that allow to perform a proper identification of faults in systems that introduce renewable gener... [more]

Learning-Based Model Predictive Control of DC-DC Buck Converters in DC Microgrids: A Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: constant power load, DC microgrid, dc-dc buck converter, deep reinforcement learning, finite set model predictive control
This paper proposes a learning-based finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) to improve the performance of DC-DC buck converters interfaced with constant power loads in a DC microgrid (DC-MG). An approach based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is presented to address one of the ongoing challenges in FCS-MPC of the converters, i.e., optimal design of the weighting coefficients appearing in the FCS-MPC objective function for each converter. A deep deterministic policy gradient method is employed to learn the optimal weighting coefficient design policy. A Markov decision method formulates the DRL problem. The DRL agent is trained for each converter in the MG, and the weighting coefficients are obtained based on reward computation with the interactions between the MG and agent. The proposed strategy is wholly distributed, wherein agents exchange data with other agents, implying a multi-agent DRL problem. The proposed control scheme offers several advantages, including pre... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control desk, Doubly-Fed Induction Motor (DFIM), dSPACE DS1104, Genetic Algorithm–Direct Torque Control (GA–DTC)
The parametric variation of nonlinear systems remains a significant drawback of automatic system controllers. The Proportional−Integral(PI) and Proportional−Integral−Derivative (PID) are the most commonly used controllers in industrial control systems. However, with the evolution of these systems, such controllers have become insufficient to compete with the complexity of the systems. This problem can be solved with the help of artificial intelligence, and especially with the use of optimization algorithms, which allow for variable gains in PID controllers that adapt to parametric variation. This article presents an analytical and experimental study of the Direct Torque Control (DTC) of a Doubly-Fed Induction Motor (DFIM). The speed adaptation of the DFIM is achieved using a PID controller, which is characterized by overshoots in the speed and ripples in the electromagnetic torque. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) within the DTC shows very good robustness in speed and torque by reducing torq... [more]

Effective Control of Road Luminaires—A Case Study on an Example of a Selected City in Poland
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control systems, discharge lamps, energy consumption, LED, street lighting
According to various estimates, street lighting in Poland consumes between 1.500 and 2.500 GWh per year and is responsible for some greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation. Also on the basis of estimates, it is estimated that approximately 3.3 million road and street luminaires are used in Poland. The increase in electricity costs, on the one hand, and the technical possibilities in the field of lighting, on the other, force the search for new solutions aimed at saving during the operation of electrical devices and installations, including road lighting installations. One of the methods of saving electricity is to replace the luminaires with energy-saving ones with LED sources, but also with new sodium and metal halide sources. The latter solution is cheaper and allows us to keep existing poles, electrical installation and luminaire heads if their technical parameters have not been degraded. The new and already used luminaires with discharge sources can be used in road lig... [more]

Event-Triggered Security Consensus for Multi-Agent Systems with Markov Switching Topologies under DoS Attacks
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: event-trigger strategy, markov switching, multi-agent systems, secure consensus
This paper studies secure consensus control for multi-agent systems subject to denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. The DoS attacks cause changes in topologies, which will destroy the channels of communication and result in network paralysis. Unlike the existing publications with Markov switching, this paper mainly studies the topological structure changes of the subsystem models after DoS attacks. To ensure the consensus of systems, this paper designs an event triggered to reduce the use of the controller and decrease the influence of channel breaks off caused by DoS attacks. On this basis, different Lyapunov functions are established in each period of attack. Then, stochastic and Lyapunov stable theory is used to form the consensus criteria. Moreover, Zeno behavior is excluded by theoretical analysis. Finally, the simulation experiment proves the effectiveness of the proposed protocol.

Low-Cost I−V Tracer for PV Fault Diagnosis Using Single-Diode Model Parameters and I−V Curve Characteristics
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault diagnosis, I–V curve, I–V tracer, PV model, Solar Photovoltaic
The continuous health monitoring of PV modules is mandatory to maintain their high efficiency and minimize power losses due to faults or failures. In this work, a low-cost embedded tracer is developed to measure the I−V curve of a PV module in less than 0.2 s. The data are used to extract the five parameters of the single-diode model and its main characteristics (open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and maximum power). Experimental data are used to validate the analytical model and evaluate the two fault diagnosis methods, using as fault features the parameters of the single-diode model or the main characteristics of the I−V curve. The results, based on field data under different temperatures and irradiances, show that the degradation of series and shunt resistances could be detected more accurately with the main characteristics rather than with the parameters. However, the estimated parameters could still be used to monitor the long-term degradation effects.

The Effect of Replacing Si-MOSFETs with WBG Transistors on the Control Loop of Voltage Source Inverters
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: coefficient diagram method, control systems, nonlinear load, passivity-based control, power conversion systems, pulse width modulation, voltage source inverter, wide bandgap transistors
The operation of a voltage source inverter (VSI) depends on its output LC filter and the PWM modulator delay. The VSI model includes serial equivalent resistance based on the resistances of the active inverter bridge transistors, the filter coil winding, and additional PCB elements, such as traces and connectors, in addition to the large equivalent resistances that result from power losses in the coil core and switches. These dynamic power losses depend on the switching frequency and the inverter load. This paper investigates the change in equivalent serial resistance that occurs if the standard Si-MOSFET switches are replaced with wide bandgap (WBG) transistors with correspondingly lower equivalent serial resistance. The paper further investigates how such a change influences the design of the controller, given that replacement of the switches shifts the roots of the closed-loop characteristic equation. Theoretical analyses of the influence of equivalent serial resistance for a multi-... [more]

Inverter-Less Integration of Roof-Top Solar PV with Grid Connected Industrial Drives
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: green energy, grid-tied inverter, inverter-less, solar PV
Green energy from Solar PV is getting increased attention in the industries due to the falling price of solar panels in the world market. A grid-tied inverter is one of the major components in such a system, where the DC energy from PV is converted to AC and synchronized with the grid to obtain power sharing between the PV and the grid for the industrial drives. In this paper, a DC link has been proposed instead of an AC link for interconnection between the solar PV system and the grid to run those industrial drives. In most modern industrial applications, induction motors are driven by VVVF (Variable Voltage and Variable Frequency) inverters to achieve efficient speed control. The inverters commonly have a rectifier section at the front end that rectifies the input AC to DC and the DC is then used in PWM mode to generate the required voltage and frequency for the induction motor operating under variable speed and load conditions. Such an inverter can use both AC or DC as the input so... [more]

Robust Control Based on Observed States Designed by Means of Linear Matrix Inequalities for Grid-Connected Converters
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: grid-connected converters, state observers, uncertain parameters
This paper provides a procedure to design robust controllers based on observed states applied to three-phase inverters with LCL filters connected to a grid with uncertain and possibly time-varying impedances, which can arise in renewable energy systems and microgrid applications. Linear matrix inequalities are used to rapidly compute, off-line, based only on the choice of two scalar parameters for pole location, sets of gains for the controller and the observer, and also to provide a theoretical certificate of the closed-loop stability, including a limit for the rate of variations of the grid impedances. The proposed design procedure allows the easy implementation of robust state feedback controllers with a reduced number of sensors, ensuring good performance for different sets of grid impedances. Additionally, larger regions of guaranteed stability are provided by the proposed procedure, when compared with a similar condition from the literature. The control law using the observed sta... Design and Comparative Analysis of Several Model Predictive Control Strategies for Autonomous Vehicle Approaching a Traffic Light Crossing
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: assessment, automated driving, autonomous vehicle, Model Predictive Control, nonlinear control, traffic light crossing
Recent advancements in automated driving technology and vehicle connectivity are associated with the development of advanced predictive control systems for improved performance, energy efficiency, safety, and comfort. This paper designs and compares different linear and nonlinear model predictive control strategies for a typical scenario of urban driving, in which the vehicle is approaching a traffic light crossing. In the linear model predictive control (MPC) case, the vehicle acceleration is optimized at every time instant on a prediction horizon to minimize the root-mean-square error of velocity tracking and RMS acceleration as a comfort metric, thus resulting in a quadratic program (QP). To tackle the vehicle-distance-related traffic light constraint, a linear time-varying MPC approach is used. The nonlinear MPC formulation is based on the first-order lag description of the vehicle velocity profile on the prediction horizon, where only two parameters are optimized: the time constan... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: entropy, fault detection and location, inverter, multiscale entropy, open-circuit
Inverters and converters contain more and more power electronics switches which may subsequently affect their reliability. Therefore, fault detection and location are essential to improve their reliability and to ensure continuous operation. In this paper, an AC−DC−AC converter with three-phase inverter is investigated under permanent, single and multiple open-circuit fault scenarios. Many entropies and multiscale entropies are then proposed to evaluate the complexity of the output currents by quantifying their entropies over a range of temporal scales. Among the multitude of entropies, only some entropies are able to differentiate healthy from open-circuit faulty conditions. Moreover, the simulation results show that these entropies are able to detect and locate the arms of the bridge with open-circuit faults.
