Keywords: diagenesis, eastern slope of Mahu sag, hydrocarbon accumulation, Junggar Basin, organic acid dissolution, secondary pores
In this study, a variety of test and analysis methods, such as cast thin sections, fluorescent thin sections, scanning electron microscopy, fluid inclusions, etc., were comprehensively used and combined with logging data, sedimentary systems, burial history and other research results, to systematically study the diagenesis characteristics of Middle Permian Lower Wuerhe formation−Lower Triassic Baikouquan formation reservoirs and their control on hydrocarbon accumulation. The coupling relationship between the hydrocarbon accumulation process and reservoir secondary pores was established. The result shows that besides the development of primary intergranular pores, the reservoir develops secondary pores, such as particle dissolution pores, cement dissolution pores and fractures. The development of secondary dissolution pores, such as particle dissolution pores, carbonate and zeolite cement dissolution pores, is mainly controlled by the range and scale of organic acids produced by the the... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: economic model predictive control, generalized error, online machine learning, recurrent neural networks, switched non-linear systems
This work focuses on the development of a Lyapunov-based economic model predictive control (LEMPC) scheme that utilizes recurrent neural networks (RNNs) with an online update to optimize the economic benefits of switched non-linear systems subject to a prescribed switching schedule. We first develop an initial offline-learning RNN using historical operational data, and then update RNNs with real-time data to improve model prediction accuracy. The generalized error bounds for RNNs updated online with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) and non-i.i.d. data samples are derived, respectively. Subsequently, by incorporating online updating RNNs within LEMPC, probabilistic closed-loop stability, and economic optimality are achieved simultaneously for switched non-linear systems accounting for the RNN generalized error bound. A chemical process example with scheduled mode transitions is used to demonstrate that the closed-loop economic performance under LEMPC can be improved usin... [more]

Keywords: freeze-drying, frequency shifting, microwave-assisted drying, process control, Process Intensification, solid-state microwave generator
Freeze-drying is a common process to extend the shelf life of food and bioactive substances. Its main drawback is the long drying time and associated high production costs. Microwaves can be applied to significantly shorten the process. This study investigates the effects of modulating the electromagnetic field in microwave-assisted freeze-drying (MFD). Control concepts based on microwave frequency are evaluated using electromagnetic simulations. The concepts are then applied to the first part of primary drying in a laboratory-scale system with solid-state generators. Targeted frequency modulation in the electromagnetic simulations enabled an increase in energy efficiency or heating homogeneity throughout MFD while having negligible effects on the power dissipation ratio between frozen and dried product areas. The simulations predicted the qualitative effects observed in the experimental proof of concept regarding energy efficiency and drying homogeneity. Additionally, shortened drying... [more]

Keywords: apparent viscosity, Fe2+-resistant polymer, formation water with high salinity, microscopic state, resistance factor
In the present study, we used Kalamkas, which is a typical Kazakhstani oilfield, which produces wastewater with high Ca2+/Mg2+ and Fe2+ concentrations, as a case study. We investigated a method for preparing Fe2+ polymer solutions without oxygen isolation under the conditions of salinity >110 × 103 mg/L, Ca2+/Mg2+ concentration >7000 mg/L, and Fe2+ concentration >30 mg/L. Fe2+-resistant groups were grafted onto the molecular chains of a hydrophobically associating polymer prepared using existing synthesis technology to overcome the decrease in apparent viscosity of the polymer solution due to the oxidation of Fe2+ during solution preparation. The experiments showed that PAM-IR with iron-resistant groups can be completely dissolved in the wastewater within 180 min, and can tolerate an NaCl concentration of up to 0.23 × 106 mg/L, a Ca2+ concentration of up to 10 × 103 mg/L, an Mg2+ concentration of up to 9 × 103 mg/L, and a Fe2+ concentration of up to 90 mg/L, with favorable thickening p... Keywords: effect evaluation, gas control, multi-source goaf, omni-directional large-diameter high-level borehole, U-type ventilation
Aiming at the gas over-run problem in the upper corner of the “U-type ventilation” end-mining working face in the multi-source goaf of the #15 coal seam in the Phoenix Mountain Mine, site survey and numerical simulation methods were adopted, which showed that the maximum caving zone height of the #15 coal seam is 14.87 m, and the maximum height of the fissure zone is 51.63 m. On this basis, the gas control scheme of the “U+ omni-directional large-diameter high-level borehole along roof strike” in the end-mining working face was formulated. After adopting this scheme, the extracted gas concentration of each borehole will reach 5−20%, the gas extraction flow rate will reach 1 m3/min−2.5 m3/min, the gas concentration at the upper corner of the working face will be controlled below 0.54%, and the gas concentration in the return airway will be controlled below 0.35%, achieving the expected effect of gas control.

Keywords: advanced process control, forecast, hydroelectric power plant, Model Predictive Control, modelization, process control, process optimization, regulation gate manipulation, reservoir, water resources management
The present work is in the framework of water resource control and optimization. Specifically, an advanced process control system was designed and implemented in a hydroelectric power plant for water management. Two reservoirs (connected through a regulation gate) and a set of turbines for energy production constitute the main elements of the process. In-depth data analysis was carried out to determine the control variables and the major issues related to the previous conduction of the plant. A tailored modelization process was conducted, and satisfactory fitting performances were obtained with linear models. In particular, first-principles equations were combined with data-based techniques. The achievement of a reliable model of the plant and the availability of reliable forecasts of the measured disturbance variables—e.g., the hydroelectric power production plan—motivated the choice of a control approach based on model predictive control techniques. A tailored methodology was propose... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: critical velocity, train blockage, tunnel fire, tunnel slope
Critical velocity is very important for smoke control in longitudinally ventilated subway tunnel fires. Numerical investigations are conducted in this paper to study the impacts of metro train blockages on critical velocity in sloping subway tunnel fires by using fire dynamics simulator (FDS) tunnel models validated with the field-experiment data. Moreover, a global model of critical velocity is presented for the blocked zone of a metro train in subway tunnel fires including influencing factors of the blockage ratio and tunnel slope. The results show that the reduction ratio of critical velocity in the blocked zone is less than the metro-train blockage ratio. The correction factor between the critical velocity reduction ratio and metro-train blockage ratio is 0.545. The aerodynamic shadow zone downstream of a subway train blockage has important impacts on the critical velocity. The critical velocity in the unblocked zone of a metro train is higher than that in the blocked zone of a met... [more]

This paper introduces an enhancement of the protection and operation of the Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) system. It uses the solid-state transformers to connect the residential A.C. and D.C. microgrids to the distribution system and fault isolation devices for faulty line isolation. In this paper, a current differential protection scheme has been proposed to detect faults in the FREEDM-based microgrid network. This method is based on the current measurement at the two-line terminals using phasor measurement units to ensure data synchronization and minimize the measuring error. Also, a communication scheme that is based on the Internet of things technology and Wi-Fi is constructed for data monitoring and interlinking between the relays, transducers, and the fault isolation devices in the two-terminals lines. A hypothetical FREEDM system has been used for the verification and testing of the proposed method. Different fault types at different locations... [more]

It is very important to effectively describe the sweep characteristics of CO2 miscible flooding based on physical models for actual reservoir development. In this study, based on the geological characteristics of the Jilin ultra-low permeability reservoir, which has significant vertical heterogeneity, a two-dimensional double-layer heterogeneous visualization model with a permeability contrast of 10 and thickness contrast of 2 was designed to perform experimental research on the sweep law of CO2 miscible flooding with an injection-production mode of “united injection and single production”. With the goal of determining the obvious differences in the gas absorption capacity and displacement power of the two layers, the CO2 dynamic miscible flooding characteristics were comprehensively analyzed, and the sweep law of CO2 miscible flooding, including the oil and gas flow trend, migration direction of the oil−gas interface, and distribution characteristics of the miscible zone, was further... Keywords: double impedance-substitution control (DISC), doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), grid side converter (GSC), low-voltage ride through (LVRT), rotor side converter (RSC), wind energy conversion system (WECS)
In a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind energy conversion system (WECS), when the grid voltage sags severely, the rotor side converter (RSC) suffers from overvoltage and overcurrent owing to the large electromotive force (EMF). To ensure that the converter operates within a safe range when grid faults occur, this paper proposes a double impedance-substitution control (DISC) strategy to improve the system’s low-voltage ride through (LVRT) capability. When the grid voltage sag is detected, the grid side converter (GSC) and RSC are connected in parallel to the rotor circuit by changing the topology of the system. In the new topology, GSC and RSC are equivalent to inductive impedance by controlling, which can not only suppress the overvoltage and overcurrent at the rotor side, but also effectively reduce the torque ripple. Additionally, the DISC strategy can provide reactive power support to the grid during LVRT. Finally, the simulation results show that the DISC strategy can... [more]

Keywords: flux-weakening control, high-speed operation, permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), voltage closed-loop control
This study presents a variable incremental controller for flux-weakening control in the high-speed operation area of a permanent-magnetic synchronous motor (PMSM). In general, voltage-based flux-weakening control utilizes a reference voltage and a PI controller to generate a flux component current. In this paper, the voltage-based flux-weakening control is performed using the variable incremental controller instead of the PI controller. The variable incremental controller can control the flux component current using only the maximum speed and maximum current of the motor. A method for properly setting an appropriate variable incremental controller using acceleration is additionally presented. A variable incremental controller is applied and, accordingly, the overshoot of the motor speed can be reduced and the speed error of the motor can be minimized by reducing the difference between the actual motor and targeted accelerations. This method can simplify the design of a controller that... [more]

Keywords: 4WID electrical vehicle, active front steering, backstepping, direct yaw control, Model Predictive Control
A path following control strategy for a four-wheel-independent-drive electrical vehicle (4WID-EV) based on backstepping and model predictive control is presented, which can ensure the accuracy of path following and maintain vehicle stability simultaneously. Firstly, a 2-DOF vehicle dynamic model and a path following error model are built and the desired yaw rate is obtained through backstepping. Then, a model predictive controller is adopted to track the desired yaw rate and obtain the optimal front wheel steering and external yaw moment. Meanwhile, an optimal torque distribution algorithm is carried out to allocate it to each tire. Finally, the effectiveness and superiority of the strategy is validated via CarSim−Simulink joint simulation. Results show that the strategy has higher following accuracy, smaller sideslip angle, and better yaw rate tracking.

Keywords: controlled islanding, cyber security, emergency control, false data attack, phasor measurement units, uncertainty, wide-area control and stability
The widespread application of phasor measurement units has improved grid operational reliability. However, this has increased the risk of cyber threats such as false data injection attack that mislead time-critical measurements, which may lead to incorrect operator actions. While a single incorrect operator action might not result in a cascading failure, a series of actions impacting critical lines and transformers, combined with pre-existing faults or scheduled maintenance, might lead to widespread outages. To prevent cascading failures, controlled islanding strategies are traditionally implemented. However, islanding is effective only when the received data are trustworthy. This paper investigates two multi-objective controlled islanding strategies to accommodate data uncertainties under scenarios of lack of or partial knowledge of false data injection attacks. When attack information is not available, the optimization problem maximizes island observability using a minimum number of... [more]

Operators of mobile platforms that employ hydraulic actuation, such as excavators, seek more efficient power transfer from source to load. Pump-controlled architectures achieve greater efficiency than valve-controlled architectures but exhibit poor tracking performance. We present a system-design optimization technique that ensures compliance with design requirements and minimizes peak input power, which correlates inversely with efficiency. We utilize the optimization technique to size a valve-controlled hydraulically actuated stabilized mount on a mobile platform. Our optimization framework accounts for the disturbance spectrum, a stabilization performance measure, the system dynamics, and control system design. Our technique features automated requirement derivation in the form of a parameter estimation, which supports design decisions under constraints. Our results show that one of four inequality constraints is active. This constraint represents a common design rule and results in... [more]

Keywords: bond graph, expert system, fault diagnosis, reactor coolant system
A fault diagnosis method using bond graphs in an expert system is proposed for a reactor coolant system. Firstly, the time causality graph and the variable relationship graph are derived from the bond graph. Secondly, the fault signature matrix is obtained by combining the change relationship of fault parameters. Finally, the fault signature matrix is used as the rule of the inference engine design in the expert system for fault diagnosis. In this paper, the key equipment of the reactor coolant system is used to verify the fault diagnosis method of the bond graph expert system, and the path reasoning relationship between alarms is obtained, which can accurately obtain the deep knowledge required by the operators. A new idea for fault diagnosis in a nuclear power plant’s expert system is provided by this method.

Keywords: DC current injection, disturbance observer, split capacitor, ZSI
Regarding the problems of resonance and direct current (DC) components when the Z-source inverter (ZSI) without an isolation transformer is connected to the grid through an LCL filter, this paper proposes a novel DC component suppression strategy for a grid-connected ZSI based on the split capacitor method of disturbance observer (DOB). The split capacitor method is utilized to convert a third-order LCL filter into a first-order one to eliminate the resonance problem. The DC component of the inverter output voltage is regarded as an external disturbance, and the employed DOB is used to observe it, which is fed forward to suppress the DC disturbance component. Various comparison results of the simulation and experiment show that the proposed control strategy can effectively reduce grid-connected DC components injected into the grid at less than 0.5%, which decreases the DC component from 1.8% to 0.1%.

Keywords: AC copper loss, circulating currents, permanent magnet machines, proximity effect, windings
In high performance electric machines, the increase of fundamental frequency leads to additional losses in the winding due to parasitic effects such as the associated skin and proximity effects. In the first part, this paper presents an investigation into accurate modelling of AC losses in the winding using numerical methods and their experimental verification. Then, using experimental motorette setups, this research provides a comparative study between fixed strand positioning and fixed conductor shapes on the AC losses in the winding. It is shown that the exact position of strands in the conductor is not a critical factor; however, it is very important to control the conductor shape inside the slot. In the final section of this paper, an investigation into the relationship between AC losses in the winding and copper filling factor is presented. It is shown experimentally that counter-intuitive design choices such as using a lower copper fill factor and thicker strand diameters may be... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fault tolerance, modular multilevel converter (MMC), post-fault operation, space vector modulation (SVM)
Modular multilevel converter (MMC) is distinguished by its modularity. In order to improve its reliability and avoid unscheduled maintenance, it requires the MMC to continue operating even though some of its submodules (SMs) have failed. In this paper, a grouping management method of SMs in MMC is first presented where every six SMs are conceptually grouped into a virtual subunit (SU), and on this basis, a simplified space vector modulation (SVM) implementation is developed. Then, the fault-tolerant solutions are proposed by investigating the post-fault operation of the MMC based on the virtual SU concept. It is analyzed that the SU failures can be categorized into three basic types, according to the phase where the failed SMs are located, and also multiple SM failures can be decomposed into one or multiple basic fault types. In this way, the fault-tolerant solutions are unified regardless of the number of faulty SMs. Further, the sorting capacitor voltage control is combined into the... [more]

This article presents a method for quantification of methanol and ethanol integrated in the same gas-chromatographic run with a quantification of gases dissolved in mineral oil, making it an integrated tool in transformer diagnostics. The results of aging experiments at 120 °C and 60 °C of Kraft paper, copper, barrier, and pressboard immersed in mineral oil, as well as the aging of thermal upgrade paper in mineral and natural ester oil at 140 °C are presented, in order to investigate correlations between different aging markers and to evaluate their partitioning between oil and cellulose at defined conditions. The results of partitioning experiments at 60 °C showed that re-absorption of methanol from oil to the cellulose materials is faster than the re-absorption of furans. This means that methanol is a paper-degradation marker that can be used in diagnostics over shorter equilibrium times and for the detection of developing faults at broader temperature ranges. Keywords: biased sinusoidal signal, disturbance rejection, internal model principle, predictive control tracking
Some novel applications require the tracking/rejection of biased sinusoidal reference/distur-bances. According to the internal model principle (IMP), a controller must embed the model of a biased sinusoidal signal to track references and also reject perturbations modeled through the aforementioned signal. However, the design of that kind of controller is not straightforward, especially when they are implemented in digital processors. This paper presents a controller, based on generalized predictive control (GPC), designed for tracking/rejection of biased sinusoidal signals. In general, GPC is based on the prediction of the plant responses through an augmented prediction model. The proposed approach develops an augmented model that predicts the future errors. The prediction model and the control law used in the proposed approach embed the discrete-time model of a biased sinusoidal signal. Thus, the proposed controller can track/reject biased sinusoidal references/disturbances. The predi... [more]

This paper demonstrates the possibility of active magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) control of supersonic flows containing shock waves. The shock wave configurations that occur at the inlet to a supersonic diffuser and in front of a streamlined semicylindrical model are used for the purpose of investigation. The impact is carried out by organizing local gas discharge regions when applying a magnetic field transverse to gas discharge currents. It has been shown that by changing the local region of application, the intensity and the direction of the gas discharge currents, it is possible to change the intensity and direction of the ponderomotive force acting on the gas flow during MHD interaction. The ponderomotive force control allows for acting locally on the shape and position of shock waves, the speed and direction of the flow, and the increase or reduction of pressure near the surface of the streamlined body. The experiments were carried out on a gas dynamic setup based on a shock tube in a... [more]
