Suppression of Wind Generator Speed Vibration Based on the Internal Model Control with Three Degrees of Freedom
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: anti-interference, generator speed control, three degrees of freedom internal model control (3-DOF-IMC), wind power system
When the wind power system is working in the maximum wind energy tracking area, or when its mechanical drivetrain system vibrates and the vibration frequency is relatively high, the system cannot suppress the speed vibration of the generator in the drivetrain system by adjusting the pitch angle. In this paper, a generator speed control system based on the three degrees of freedom internal model control (3-DOF-IMC) is established to control the generator speed. Thus, a scheme of using the feedback filter in the 3-DOF-IMC to suppress generator speed vibration caused by drivetrain shaft elasticity and gear clearance in the drivetrain system is proposed. Firstly, the vibration problem and waveform of the two-mass wind power drivetrain systems are discussed, and the generator’s vector control and speed control systems are analyzed. Secondly, the principle of the 3-DOF-IMC is described, and the influence of the three controllers on the speed tracking performance and anti-interference perform... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: hybrid motor, multi-DOF (multi-degree-of-freedom) system, multi-DOF motor, position control, vector
This paper presents the design, modeling, and control of a hybrid multi-degree-of-freedom motor (HMDOF motor) that can be applied to unmanned aerial vehicles, such as drones. The HMDOF motor has a rotating motor and tilting motors separately and enables multi-DOF movement by driving each motor. In addition, owing to its structural characteristics, it is designed to allow a 3- or 6-DOF movement in only one motor. In this study, the control performance of an HMDOF motor was verified using simulated and experimental results. The position control performance for the rotation speed of the rotating motor was verified, and the control performance of the motor under the speed of the rotating motor and disturbance on tilting motors were analyzed.

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: actor-attention-critic, air logistics, multiagent reinforcement learning, multiple UAV, sensor fusion
The proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has spawned a variety of intelligent services, where efficient coordination plays a significant role in increasing the effectiveness of cooperative execution. However, due to the limited operational time and range of UAVs, achieving highly efficient coordinated actions is difficult, particularly in unknown dynamic environments. This paper proposes a multiagent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL)-based fusion-multiactor-attention-critic (F-MAAC) model for multiple UAVs’ energy-efficient cooperative navigation control. The proposed model is built on the multiactor-attention-critic (MAAC) model, which offers two significant advances. The first is the sensor fusion layer, which enables the actor network to utilize all required sensor information effectively. Next, a layer that computes the dissimilarity weights of different agents is added to compensate for the information lost through the attention layer of the MAAC model. We utilize th... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: HVDC–LCC, power exchange, power interconnections, Songo–Apollo HVDC line, Static Var Compensator
The strategic intent of the African Union is to develop a “Smart Integrated African Electric Power Super Grid” driven by modern tools and advances in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) engineering and flexible alternating current technology systems (FACTS), which is central in supporting Africa’s sustained economic growth and development. The southern African region, including South Africa, is beset by the critical challenges of perennial load-shedding, which impedes economic growth and aggravates unemployment. This has led to the insecurity of electricity supplies and degraded the quality of life. The parallel operation of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and flexible AC technology systems (FACTS) controllers is gaining traction as system conditions become more complex, such as weak power networks which requires increased stability requirements, resulting in load-shedding and power outages. These adversely affect business productivity and adversely affect GDP and economic growth. Th... [more]

IK-SPSA-Based Performance Optimization Strategy for Steam Generator Level Control System of Nuclear Power Plant
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control parameter optimization, knowledge-informed simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation, nuclear power plant, steam generator level control
The steam generator (SG) is a critical component of the steam supply system in the nuclear power plant (NPP). Hence, it is necessary to control the SG level well to ensure the stable operation of the NPPs. However, its dynamic level response process has significant nonlinearity (such as the ‘swell and shrinks’ effect) and time-varying properties. As most of the SG level control systems (SGLCS) are constructed based on the Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers with fixed parameters, the controller parameters should be optimized to improve the performance of the SGLCS. However, traditional parameters tuning methods are generally experience-based, cumbersome, and time-consuming, and it is difficult to obtain the optimal parameters. To address the challenge, this study adopts a knowledge-informed simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (IK-SPSA) based on adjacent iteration points information to improve the performance of the SGLCS. Rather than the traditional contro... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DGS, FRT, grid disturbances, PCC, PMSG, voltage enhancement
A unified active power control scheme is devised for the grid-integrated permanent magnet synchronous generator-based wind power system (WPS) to follow the Indian electricity grid code requirements. The objective of this paper is to propose control schemes to ensure the continuous integration of WPS into the grid even during a higher percentage of voltage dip. In this context, primarily a constructive reactive power reference is formulated to raise and equalize the point of common coupling (PCC) potential during symmetrical and asymmetrical faults, respectively. A simple active power reference is also proposed to inject a consistent percentage of generated power even during faults without violating system ratings. Eventually, the efficacy of the proposed scheme is demonstrated in terms of PCC voltage enhancement, DC-link potential, grid real, and reactive power oscillation minimization using the PSCAD/ EMTDC software.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Combo CCS Type 2, communication control unit (CCU), electric vehicle charging analyzer, electric vehicle DC charger, ISO 15118-2, testing, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology is viewed as a viable solution to offer auxiliary power system services. Currently, V2G operation is only possible through DC chargers using the CHAdeMO connector with the necessary communication protocol. However, in Europe, for high-power DC charging (>50 kW), the Combined Charging Service (CCS) Type 2 is preferred over CHAdeMO. Therefore, this work presents the development of a V2G testing system with a Combo CCSType 2 charger including communication via the ISO 15118-2 protocol. The BOSCH passenger car with a 400 V battery pack is used to test and validate the technical feasibility of V2G charging via a Combo CCS Type 2 connector standard. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bridging ball plugging, DEM simulation, fluid-loss control, fractured-vuggy carbonate reservoirs, granular flow
Pores, fractures, caves, and other storage spaces are commonly distributed in fractured-vuggy carbonate reservoirs. During the drilling process, more than half of all drill-in fluid loss issues are caused by developed caves. Cave scales range from centimeters to meters, making leak prevention increasingly difficult through the use of traditional technologies. Currently, there is still high demand for the understanding of feasible loss control techniques, especially in fractured-vuggy carbonate reservoirs. Multistage Bridge Plugging (MBP) technology has facilitated pioneering experiments in many oilfields, but the success rate of plugging is less than 50%, and the effects of plugging are uncontrollable and difficult to predict. This is due to a lack of clarity regarding the plugging mechanism and the key controlling factors. In this study, we used the Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulation method to investigate the controlling factors of MBP technology, and analyzed its applicable con... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: averaged power calculation, droop-control, nonlinear loads, small-signal model, SOGI filter, three-phase paralleled inverters
The power calculation is an indispensable element in droop-controlled inverters because the bandwidth of the measured power has a direct impact on the controller performance. This paper proposes a fast and accurate power calculation algorithm based on the combined Second Order Generalized Integrator (SOGI) filters in stationary coordinates for a three-phase system, which takes into consideration the use of nonlinear loads. The power calculation scheme is formed by the two-stage SOGI filters that are employed for obtaining the active and reactive powers required to perform a droop-based inverter operation, respectively. From the two-stage structure, the first SOGI is used as a band-pass filter (BPF) for filtering harmonics and obtaining the fundamental current of the nonlinear load; The second SOGI is used as a low-pass filter (LPF) for extracting the DC-component, which corresponds with the average power. A small-signal model of a two droop-controlled inverters system is built to obtai... [more]

Robust Control and Optimization Method for Single-Phase Grid-Connected Inverters Based on All-Pass-Filter Phase-Locked Loop in Weak Grid
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: complex coefficient filter (CCF), grid-connected inverter (GCI), phase-locked loop (PLL), robustness, weak grid
In a distributed generation system, the all-pass-filter phase-locked loop (APF-PLL) is a commonly used method for grid synchronization. However, the coupling effect between APF-PLL and current control loop increases the risk of oscillation instability for the inverter in the weak grid. At present, there are few effective methods to solve the adverse effect of APF-PLL on the inverter-grid interconnection system in the weak grid. Therefore, a small-signal impedance model of the inverter considering the dual d-q frame brought by APF-PLL is first established. Then the reason for the inverter instability caused by APF-PLL in the weak grid is analyzed. Subsequently, an impedance reshaping method based on a modified first-order filter PLL with a complex coefficient filter (CCF-MFOF-PLL) and its parameter optimization design method are proposed. Finally, the experimental results verify that the proposed method widens the stable range of the inverter and ensures the stable operation of the inve... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive composite control, extended state observer (ESO), nonlinearly parameterized-uncertainties, permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM)
In many industrial practices, it needs a permanent magnet synchronous motor to provide enough torque, such as autonomous vehicle driving. In the operation of a permanent magnet synchronous motor, the nonlinearly parameterized-uncertainties degrade control performances, causing the instability of motor speed and output torques. Based on the analysis of temperature effects and friction torque model, a composite controller is proposed in this paper which considers model uncertainties and external disturbances. An adaptive controller involving an online time-varying scaling gain is employed to eliminate the influence of nonlinearly parameterized-uncertainties. In addition, an extended state observer (ESO) is used to estimate the disturbance in the control system in which the estimated value is used to compensate for the feed-forward. Numerical simulation and experiment are performed and the results show that the proposed method may alleviate the performance degradation due to nonlinearly p... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: conformance control, heavy oil, heterogeneous reservoirs, inorganic gel, thermal recovery
The proven reserves of heavy oil in the Bohai oilfield exceed 600 million tons. Heavy oil is highly viscous, temperature sensitive, and suitable for thermal extraction, but due to the strong inhomogeneity of the reservoir, the recovery rate of pure thermal extraction development is low, and there is an urgent need to conduct research on profile control + thermal extraction to guide the actual production. In this paper, we propose an integrated technology of profile control and thermal recovery to enhance heavy oil recovery. The heavy oil exhibited strong temperature dependence and nonlinear flow characteristics. An inorganic gel was selected for profile control to assist thermal recovery. Thermal recovery experiments were conducted in the laboratory using cores saturated by crude oil with different viscosities to simulate the oil in areas swept by thermal fluid. February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: central chilled water system, co-simulation, condenser water temperature, cooling tower operation control, efficiency improvement, EnergyPlus, liquid–gas ratio (LGR), low-approach temperature
Previous studies have been conducted by employing various methods to reduce the condenser water temperature, a crucial control variable to consider when attempting to improve the operational efficiency of a chiller. The existing literature dealing with the effects of low-condenser water temperatures is limited, as the cooling water flow rate is often considered the operating variable of the condenser loop. However, to produce additional low condenser water temperatures, the approach temperature of the cooling tower in the system must be reduced. To reduce the approach temperature, it is necessary to review the physical behavior and efficiency of the cooling tower according to the change in the liquid to gas ratio (LGR), which is dependent upon the condenser water flow rate and the cooling tower fan air flow rate within the condenser loop. However, this process has rarely been reviewed in previous studies. Therefore, this study developed a new cooling tower control algorithm from the LG... [more]

Triple-Mode Average Current Control with Valley Current Shaping for DCM/CRM/CCM Boost PFC Converter
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: boost, CCM, CRM, current mode control, current stress, DCM, harmonic distortion, power factor
This paper presents a triple-mode average current control (TACC) strategy to achieve unity power factor and reduce the current stress for a boost PFC converter. The controller switches among different modes in each half-line cycle, and smooth transition is ensured by mapping of the operation region. By adaptive mode shifting, it reduces the current stress and current distortion caused by non-linear effects. With valley current shaping and comparisons, the TACC controller accordingly incorporates three control laws to adapt different modes. In discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), a variable on-time is calculated while the modulation is equivalent to PWM. In critical conduction mode (CRM), a constant on-time is derived, while the switching cycle is modified to regulate the current average value. For both DCM and CRM, the switching cycle is slightly extended to realize valley switching. Furthermore, with valley current shaping, the proposed controller reuses the CRM calculation to form co... Dual Three-Phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines Vector Control Based on Triple Rotating Reference Frame
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: imbalance current, mechanical antenna, PM machine, triple rotating reference frame, vector control
This paper presents a triple rotating coordinate transformed vector control method for dual three-phase permanent magnet (PM) machines. In the proposed scheme, the control variables are converted to three sets of αβ components directly, which are 120° electric degrees different from each other. It omits the complicated six-dimensional transformed matrix and reduces the computation greatly. The relationship with vector space (VSD) control was mathematically analyzed. By ensuring the consistency of control variables in the three stationary reference frames, the suggested method can not only achieve the same fundamental control performance as VSD but compensate for the imbalance current caused by the harmonics in the back electromotive force. In addition, the proposed method belongs to multi redundancy control in theory, which is maybe a good solution for fault-tolerant operation. Finally, a prototype dual three-phase PM machine was tested. The experimental results are in good agreement w... [more]

Dynamic Grid Voltage-Based Impedance-Reshaped Control for the Stability Enhancement of Grid-Connected DC/AC Converter System under Bidirectional Power Flow
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bidirectional control, grid-connected converter, impedance control, impedance interaction, stability analysis
Considering the bidirectional three-phase DC/AC converter, it presents different impedance characteristics on AC side under different power flow directions, resulting in different stability margin. This may cause the system instability at high-power level. This directionally oriented stability difference has not been paid enough attention in the grid-connected converter control. To mitigate the stability variations under bidirectional power flow, a dynamic grid voltage-based impedance reshaping control is proposed in this paper. The proposed method extracts the grid voltage dynamic component, and correspondingly compensates the power output, which is capable of regulating the power output coordinated with voltage dynamics in both power flow directions, neutralizing the stability difference and enhancing the bidirectional power flow stability. Unlike the conventional unidirectional damping optimization control in the current loop, the proposed control method can maintain satisfied stabi... [more]

Piecewise Affine Magnetic Modeling of Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Machines for Virtual-Flux Control
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: flux estimation, motor parameters, permanent-magnet synchronous machines, piecewise linear techniques
Accurate flux linkage magnetic models are essential for virtual-flux controllers in PMSMs. Flux linkage exhibits saturation and cross-saturation at high currents, introducing nonlinearities into the machine model. Virtual-flux controllers regulate the flux of a machine by using field-oriented control, such as model predictive control. In this study, a methodology for creating a piecewise affine flux linkage magnetic model is proposed which locally linearizes the inductance and flux offset of the machine. This method keeps the magnetic model and thus the state-space model of the system linear while capturing the saturation effects, enabling robust controls and efficient operation. The model is created using FEA-simulated data points and verified with experimental datapoints. An algorithm to optimize the model in MTPA and derated operation is presented with an average flux error less than 1% and maximum error less than 3% using only 40 points. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Markov model, reliability, stochastic stability in power systems, switched control
The essential prerequisites for secure customer service are power system stability and reliability. This work shows how to construct a robust switching control for studying power system load changes using an invariant ellipsoid method. Furthermore, the suggested control ensures stability when the system is subjected to random stochastic external disturbances, and functions randomly in two conditions: normal and contingency. The extreme (least) reliability state is chosen as the most severe scenario (corresponding to a transmission line outage). As a two-state Markov random chain, the transition probabilities are utilized to simulate the switching between normal and contingency modes (or processes). To characterize the dynamics of the studied system, a stochastic mathematical model is developed. An Improved Frequency-Adaptive Virtual Variable Sampling-Based Repetitive Control for an Active Power Filter
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active power filter, frequency-adaptive control, harmonics compensation, repetitive controller, system stability margin
To eliminate the harmonics caused by nonlinear loads, repetitive controllers are widely applied as current controllers for active power filters (APF). In practice, a variation in grid frequency leads to the appearance of a fractional-order delay filter. As a result, the resonant frequency of the repetitive controller will deviate from the fundamental frequency and the controller cannot compensate for harmonics accurately. To solve this problem, an improved frequency-adaptive repetitive controller based on virtual variable sampling (IMFA-VVS-RC) for APF is proposed in this paper. To enhance the system stability margin, the proposed RC introduces an infinite impulse response (IIR) low-pass filter. The proposed RC has a high stability margin at high frequencies due to the low gain of the IIR low-pass filter in the region above the cutoff frequency. In this way, the influence of model uncertainty and parameter uncertainty on system stability are reduced at high frequencies. At the same tim... [more]

The Pinghu Formation consists primarily of marine-continental transitional deposits. The widely distributed fluvial and tidal transgressive sand bodies comprise the main reservoirs of the Baochu slope zone in the Xihu Sag in the East China Sea Shelf Basin. These sand bodies are deeply buried, laterally discontinuous, and are frequently interrupted by coal-bearing intervals, thereby making it extremely difficult for us to characterize their hydrocarbon potential quantitatively via seismic inversion techniques, such as multi-attribute seismic analysis and post-stack seismic inversion, hindering further hydrocarbon exploration in the Xihu Sag. Here, a prestack seismic inversion approach is applied to the regional seismic data to decipher the spatiotemporal distribution pattern of the sand bodies across the four sequences, i.e., SQ1, SQ2, SQ3, and SQ4, from bottom up, within the Pinghu Formation.
