Review of Medium-Voltage Switchgear Fault Detection in a Condition-Based Monitoring System by Using Deep Learning
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: arcing, condition-based monitoring, deep learning, Fault Detection, medium voltage, partial discharge, switchgear
In power energy distribution networks, switchgear is considered critical equipment. This is because the act of monitoring the operation and condition of switchgear, as well as performing the required corrective maintenance on any potentially problematic equipment, is critical. A single event may harm thousands of customers over time and pose a significant risk to operational staff. Many considerations must be put in place before using outages to switch down the system since they may raise maintenance costs and disrupt the power supply to users. As a result, proper interpretation of switchgear status evaluations is critical for the early identification of possible faults. Existing ultrasound condition-based monitoring (CBM) diagnostic testing techniques require the tester to manually interpret test data. This study aims to review the status of the recent development of CBM techniques with faults in switchgear. The current trend in electrification will be toward the safety and sustainabi... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: LC series resonant, load matching converter, modern rail, modulation control, supercapacitor, wireless power transfer
With the hot topic of “Carbon Neutrality”, energy efficiency and saving practices such as reducing fuel consumption, vigorously advocating new energy power and modern rail are now becoming the main research topics of energy conversion technologies. Supercapacitors, with their ability of higher power density, fast charging, and instantaneous high current output, have become an indispensable energy storage element in modern traction systems for modern rail. This proposal introduced wireless power transfer technologies by using LC series resonant technology for charging the supercapacitors. To match the voltage and current level of the supercapacitor, a four-switch buck-boost converter was applied on the secondary side of the load-matching converter. To regulate the wireless transfer power and charging power of the supercapacitor, the active modulation control method was introduced on both the primary and secondary sides of the transfer system. On the primary side, the power is controlled... [more]

Research on a Wide-Output Resonant Converter with Multi-Mode Switching
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: multi-mode, resonant converter, self-adjusting, series-parallel, soft switching, wide output
In this article, a resonant converter based on a series-parallel self-adjusting rectifier structure is proposed. By changing the driving signal of the switch, the converter has four working modes: full-bridge structure frequency modulation control, full-bridge structure phase-shift control, half-bridge structure frequency modulation control and half-bridge structure phase-shift control. The newly proposed resonant converter retains the soft switching characteristics of the LLC resonant converter and the mode switching can be completed only through software control without adding additional switches. Different modes correspond to different gain ranges. By changing the control strategy of the modes, the newly proposed converter can meet the design requirements of wide output. Finally, an experimental prototype with an input voltage of 25 V and an output voltage of 9 V to 35 V is built. The experimental results prove the correctness of the wide output characteristics of the converter prop... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active disturbance rejection control, cross-coupled synchronous compensator, permanent magnet synchronous motor, position synchronous control
In order to solve the problem that the position synchronous performance of dual permanent magnet synchronous motor servo system is easily affected by parameter perturbation and load disturbance, an anti-disturbance integrated position synchronous control strategy of dual permanent magnet synchronous motor system is proposed. Firstly, the integral mathematical model of a dual permanent magnet synchronous motor system is established. After that, the third-order linear extended state observer is constructed to observe and compensate for disturbance in order to improve the anti-disturbance performance of the position loop. At the same time, a cross-coupled position synchronous compensator is added to improve the synchronous performance of the system, and through the Bode diagram analysis method in the frequency domain, the system stability and anti-disturbance performance are researched. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by experimental research.

Passivity-Based Control of Dual Active Bridge Converter in Constant Power Load Condition
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: constant power load, dual active bridge, passivity-based control
This paper presents a passivity-based control (PBC) based on the Euler−Lagrange (EL) model for dual active bridge (DAB) converters in the constant power load (CPL) condition. The EL model, which is derived from Kirchhoff’s current equations at the input and output nodes, is first presented in the DAB application, and the bidirectional CPL is considered in the theoretical analysis, simulation, and physical verification. The PBC has strong robustness to large-signal disturbance and negative incremental resistance load, and it is suitable for DAB converters in the CPL condition. In this paper, the DAB’s EL model, passivity analysis, stability analysis, and controller design are described in detail. The simulation results based on SIMULINK are also given in this paper. Finally, a DAB converter prototype is built to demonstrate the validity and feasibility of the proposed approach.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active aerodynamics, flow control, front wing, rear wing, sports cars aerodynamics
This study was prepared to demonstrate how the aerodynamics of a sports car can be enhanced, emphasizing aerodynamic improvements, and utilizing small movable elements. All the presented results were obtained using the numerical simulations performed in ANSYS Fluent in steady-state conditions. It was investigated how the performance of a car equipped with the splitter and the rear wing could be improved. The benefits of a top-mounted wing configuration were presented compared to a bottom-mounted setup. A change to the top-mounting configuration enabled undisturbed flow around the suction side of the wing and a more favorable placement of the wing to the car body. In the given case, an 80% increase of downforce was achieved in the performance mode of the car setup and a 16% increase of drag in the air braking mode. A method of the front splitter active steering was presented, which enabled a change of the generated downforce using only a small element that enabled an instant change of 3... [more]

Model Predictive Phase Control for Single-Phase Electric Springs
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distributed generation, electric spring, grid connected, microgrids, Model Predictive Control, phase control, reactive power compensation
In this paper, model predictive control (MPC) is proposed for single-phase electric springs (ESs) with the help of the existing δ control, which is realized by controlling the instantaneous phase angle of the predefined sinusoidal reference of a certain controller. System modeling is analyzed first to get differential forms of state variables. The discrete-time state space model is obtained through first-order approximation. Critical load (CL) voltage can be predicted by the prediction of ES voltage and line current. The operating modes of ESs can be determined and the reference signal for CL voltage can be provided by δ control. As a result, cost function is obtained as the absolute value of the error between predicted CL voltage and its predefined reference. Two typical operating functions such as pure reactive power compensation mode and power factor correction (PFC) mode are selected and simulated to validate the proposed control and analysis. It is revealed that both control objec... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive backstepping control, doubly fed induction generator, field orientation control, MPPT by curve fitting, pitch control, wind energy in Morocco
Wind speed variations affect the performance of the wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) negatively. This paper addressed an advanced law of the backstepping controller (ABC) for enhancing the integration of doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based grid-connected WECS under wind range of wind speed. This enhancement was achieved through three control schemes, which were blade pitch control, rotor-side control, and grid-side control. The blade pitch control was presented to adjust the wind turbine speed when the wind speed exceeds its rated value. In addition, the rotor and grid-side converter controllers were presented for improving the direct current link voltage profile and achieving maximum power point tracking (MPPT) under speed variations, respectively. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed ABC control, a comparison between PI and sliding-mode control (SMC) was presented, considering the parameters of a 1.5 MW DFIG wind turbine in the Assilah zone in Morocco. Adaptive Model Predictive Control for DAB Converter Switching Losses Reduction
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive control, dual active bridge converter, Model Predictive Control, power electronics, switching losses
The solid-state transformer is the enabling technology for the future of electric power systems. The increasing relevance of this equipment demands higher standards for efficiency and losses reduction. The dual active bridge (DAB) topology is the most usual DC-DC converter used in the solid-state transformer, and is responsible for part of its switching losses. The traditional phase-shift modulation used on DAB converters presents significant switching losses during the operation with reduced loads. The alternative Triangular and Trapezoidal Modulations have been proposed in recent literature; however, there are limitations on the maximum power these techniques can deal with. This paper presents an adaptive model predictive control to select among these three techniques, according to the converter model, the one that minimizes the switching losses and allows the current demanded by the load. Moreover, an alternative cost function is proposed, including the output voltage and current. T... [more]

An Improved PLL-Based Speed Estimation Method for Induction Motors through Harmonic Separation
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: induction motor, motor harmonics, phase-locked loop, speed estimation
The real-time speed estimation of induction motors (IMs) is important for the motors’ state monitoring and control. The utilization of rotor slot harmonics (RSHs) due to the inherent cogging effect is regarded as a promising way to realize the speed estimation of IMs. The key to the RSH-based speed estimation method is how to accurately and quickly identify the frequency of an RSH signal. However, as the RSH signal always consists of two side-frequency components that are adjacent to each other, it is actually improper to directly use the conventional phase-locked loop (PLL) method designed for single-frequency tracking. Furthermore, the form of the two side components in the frequency domain also leads to a significant amplitude fluctuation in the time-domain waveform of RSHs, thus resulting in the obvious frequency tracking errors of the conventional PLL method. In this paper, we proposed an improved PLL through harmonic separation to further improve the performance of the RSH-based... [more]

Selection of a Transparent Meta-Model Algorithm for Feasibility Analysis Stage of Energy Efficient Building Design: Clustering vs. Tree
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: conditional inference tree, decision support, energy efficient building, feasibility analysis, meta-model
Energy Efficient Building (EEB) design decisions that have traditionally been made in the later stages of the design process now often need to be made as early as the feasibility analysis stage. However, at this very early stage, the design frame does not yet provide sufficient details for accurate simulations to be run. In addition, even if the decision-makers consider an exhaustive list of options, the selected design may not be optimal, or carefully considered decisions may later need to be rolled back. At this stage, design exploration is much more important than evaluating the performance of alternatives, thus a more transparent and interpretable design support model is more advantageous for design decision-making. In the present study, we develop an EEB design decision-support model constructed by a transparent meta-model algorithm of simulations that provides reasonable accuracy, whereas most of the literature used opaque algorithms. The conditional inference tree (CIT) algorith... [more]

Direct Charge Control Method for Inverters in Discontinuous Conduction Mode
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: charge quantity model, direct charge control, discontinuous conduction mode, soft switching
The discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) of the inductor current is an effective way to achieve high efficiency and high power density of inverters because it has the advantages of zero-current switching and small inductance of the filter inductor. Although the DCM can operate at a fixed switching frequency, there has been no linear model for realizing high-performance digital control. This paper provides a solution for this problem. Firstly, a linear first-order charge quantity model (CQM) for a DCM inverter with a fixed switching frequency is established, which uses charge quantities output by the inverter bridge as a control variable. Secondly, a direct charge control (DCC) method is proposed, and the design process is significantly simplified. Finally, the performance of the proposed control method is verified by the experiments using a 1 kW prototype, and a high-quality output voltage waveform with a peak efficiency of above 98% was achieved. Microgrid Energy Management during High-Stress Operation
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control

We consider the energy management of an isolated microgrid powered by photovoltaics (PV) and fuel-based generation with limited energy storage. The grid may need to shed load or energy when operating in stressed conditions, such as when nighttime electrical loads occur or if there is little energy storage capacity. An energy management system (EMS) can prevent load and energy shedding during stress conditions while minimizing fuel consumption. This is important when the loads are high priority and fuel is in short supply, such as in disaster relief and military applications. One example is a low-power, provisional microgrid deployed temporarily to service communication loads immediately after an earthquake. Due to changing circumstances, the power grid may be required to service additional loads for which its storage and generation were not originally designed. An EMS that uses forecasted load and generation has the potential to extend the operation, enhancing the relief objectives. Ou... [more]

A Study on the Train Brake Position-Based Control Method for Regenerative Inverters
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, regenerative braking, regenerative inverter, traction power network
The use an inverter is one of the representative ways to utilize regenerative braking energy in railway systems. Due to the nature of urban railways that generate a large amount of regenerative energy, the economic advantages are clear. However, in the case of the existing inverter operation method, a method of operating the inverter using the threshold voltage is used, which has a disadvantage in that power cannot be utilized between the no-load voltage and the threshold voltage. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an optimal location selection method and capacity calculation method for installing a regenerative inverter in an urban rail system, and a control method according to the train brake position to increase the regenerative energy utilization rate. First, the inverter capacity and location were selected by selecting the maximum regenerative energy generation for each substation section through the train performance simulation (TPS) based DC power simulation (DCPS). Subject: Process Control
Keywords: drive-current constraint, fast non-singular terminal sliding mode, permanent magnet synchronous motor, sliding-mode disturbance observer, unmatched disturbance
A non-cascade structure with a simple parameter adjustment method and satisfying dynamic performance is investigated so as to address the problem of the complicated structure of a typical cascade control system of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) system. However, the current cannot work within a limited value under this structure, which poses a risk to circuit safety. Then, a nonlinear term is developed to address the q-axis current overrun. Furthermore, a sliding-mode disturbance observer (SMDO) is proposed to compensate for the current fluctuation caused by the unmatched load torque disturbances. Finally, stability analysis is conducted for the proposed composite strategy, and the hardware-in-the-loop experiments verify that it achieves satisfying speed-tracking performance and ensures overcurrent protection under unmatched disturb... Speed Range Extension of Dual-Stator PM Machine Using Multi-Mode Winding Switching Strategy
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dual stator, flux weakening, permanent magnet machine, speed range extension, winding switching
In this paper, a novel winding switching (WS) strategy is proposed for the speed range extension of a dual-stator permanent magnet machine (DS-PMM), which can achieve simple and effective dynamic mode conversion over an entire operating region. Two types of WS circuits with an inverter and two switch groups were first designed to enable the winding reconfiguration of the machine, which could operate in three modes. The WS principle was then elucidated by introducing simplified equivalent circuits. Besides, the torque−speed curves of the machine under different operating modes were analyzed, based on the mathematical model. A speed-based WS controller was, subsequently, designed to generate the WS control signal and realize the multi-mode operation according to real-time operating conditions. The feasibility of the proposed WS strategy for extending the speed range of the DS-PMM was, finally, verified by experiments.

A Novel Model-Free Predictive Control for T-Type Three-Level Grid-Tied Inverters
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current gradient, model-free predictive control, sector judgment, stagnation effect, T-type three-level inverter
The model-free predictive control (MFPC) scheme is an effective scheme to enhance the parameter robustness of model predictive control. However, the MFPC scheme can be affected by the current gradient updating frequency. This paper proposes an improved MFPC scheme for a T-type three-level inverter. First, a novel current gradient updating method is designed to estimate all current gradients per control period, which uses the current gradient relationship between different voltage vectors and eliminates the effect of current gradients updating stagnation. Moreover, a sector judgment method based on the current gradient is proposed. Redundant small vectors are accurately judged and the computational burden is greatly reduced. Finally, simulation and experimental comparisons on a T-type three-level inverter verify the effectiveness of the proposed MFPC scheme.

Keywords: high-order band-pass active damping control, predictive control, small-film capacitor
Traditional three-phase rectifier DC-link inverters have been used in industry for more than 40 years.
