Numerical Study on the Effect of the Pipe Groove Height and Pitch on the Flow Characteristics of Corrugated Pipe
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: corrugated pipe, friction factors, numerical, velocity, vortex
For corrugated pipes with a square groove, it is known that there is no interaction between the main flow and groove flow when the aspect ratio is less than four. When the groove length and height are different, the interaction occurs in the pipe. In previous studies, it was investigated whether this interaction is dependent on groove length. However, when changing the groove height, the shape of the vortex generated inside the groove changes, which may cause the interaction to occur. Therefore, in this paper the interaction between the main and groove flow of corrugated pipes is investigated when changing both groove height as well as groove pitch, corresponding to an aspect ratio of less than four. For the groove height, the flow out of the groove after impingement changes with the shape of the secondary vortex in the groove. This flow deforms the velocity distribution in the main flow, and thus the friction factor is different. For the groove pitch, there is no difference in v-veloc... [more]

Experimental Validation of the Aerodynamic Performance of an Innovative Counter-Rotating Centrifugal Compressor
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: aerodynamic, centrifugal compressor, counter-rotating, design validation, experimental, performance
Turbomachinery with double counter-rotating impellers offers more degrees of freedom in the choice of design and control parameters compared to conventional machines. For these innovative machines, the literature review shows that more publications concerning axial type turbomachines are available than centrifugal ones. This work deals with a design and experimental performance analysis, applied to two counter-rotating impellers of a centrifugal compressor “CRCC”. CRCC was designed with a specifically developed tool based on mean-line approach coupled with optimization algorithms and a stream-curvature through-flow method to satisfy the design criteria. This paper presents an experimental validation of the CRCC design tool and its performances against the baseline “SR”, composed of one centrifugal impeller and a volute for which experimental data are available. CRCC numeric simulations are also validated by experimental data. For a fair comparison between CRCC and SR, the same volute i... [more]

Critical Buckling Generation of TCA Benchmark by the B1 Theory-Augmented Monte Carlo Calculation and Estimation of Uncertainties
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: critical buckling, DeCART2D, McCARD, random sampling, SNU S/U formulation, TCA benchmark, uncertainty/sensitivity analysis
The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has developed the DeCART2D 2-dimensional (2D) method of characteristics (MOC) transport code and the MASTER nodal diffusion code and has established its own two-step procedure. For design code licensing, KAERI prepared a critical experiment on the verification and validation (V&V) of the DeCART2D code. DeCART2D is able to perform the MOC calculation only for 2D nuclear fuel systems, such as the fuel assembly. Therefore, critical buckling in the vertical direction is essential for comparison between the results of experiments and DeCART2D. In this study, the B1 theory-augmented Monte Carlo (MC) method was adopted for the generation of critical buckling. To examine critical buckling using the B1 theory-augmented MC method, TCA critical experiment benchmark problems were considered. Based on the TCA benchmark results, it was confirmed that the DeCART2D code with the newly-generated critical buckling predicts the criticality very well. In... [more]

Designing of Drive Systems in the Aspect of the Desired Spectrum of Operation
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: drive system, dynamic properties, resonance zones, synthesis, torsional vibration
A method for selecting dynamic parameters and structures of drive systems using the synthesis algorithm is presented. The dynamic parameters of the system with six degrees of freedom, consisting of a power component (motor) and a two-speed gearbox, were determined, based on a formalized methodology. The required gearbox is to work in specific resonance zones, i.e., meet the required dynamic properties such as the required resonance frequencies. In the result of the tests, a series of parameters of the drive system, defining the required dynamic properties such as the resonance and anti-resonance frequencies were recorded. Mass moments of inertia of the wheels and elastic components, contained in the required structure of the driving system, were determined for the selected parameters obtained during the synthesis.

Design of a Stationary Energy Recovery System in Rail Transport
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: energy and power measurement, railway system, regenerative braking, stationary energy storage system
Although rail is one of the most sustainable transport systems, there is still room to reduce its energy demand. In particular, during the braking of DC powered trains, a significant amount of energy is wasted. The recent developments in energy storage system technologies, combined with the widely used technique of regenerative braking, can considerably increase energy saving. This paper explores this theme, quantifying the amount of braking energy that can be potentially recovered in a real case study, starting from the experimental data measured on-board train. A simplified numerical model of the recovery process has been implemented. Adopting it, the energy that can be saved, with one or two energy storage systems, has been quantified for each possible position along the track. The procedure allows to determine the optimal position. Further findings about the impact of voltage level on the efficiency of the recovery process have been reported. The optimal level of voltage has been d... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: retrofit decarbonization, small modular reactors, supercritical steam cycles, techno-economic assessment
The near and mid-term future of the existing Polish coal-fired power fleet is uncertain. The longer-term operation of unabated coal power is incompatible with climate policy and is economically challenging because of the increasing price of CO2 emission allowances in the EU. The results of the techno-economic analysis presented in this paper indicate that the retrofit of existing coal-fired units, by means of replacing coal-fired boilers with small modular reactors, may be an interesting option for the Polish energy sector. It has been shown that the retrofit can reduce the costs in relation to greenfield investments by as much as 35%. This analysis focuses on the repowering of a 460 MW supercritical coal-fired unit based on the Łagisza power plant design with high temperature small modular nuclear reactors based on the 320 MWth unit design by Kairos Power. The technical analyses did not show any major difficulties in integrating. The economic analyses show that the proposed retrofits... [more]

A New Approach of Dedusting for IGCC by a Two-Stage Moving Granular Bed Filter
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: collection efficiency, gas cleanup, moving granular bed filter, two-stage granules
We propose a dust removal technology in which a two-stage moving granular bed filter was employed using coarse and fine filtering granules. The pressure drop, collection efficiency, and dust particulate size distributions were investigated using various mass flow rates for coarse and fine granules at room temperature. In addition, the ratio of mass consumption was used to reveal the actual mass flow. The ratio of mass consumption influenced the pressure drop, collection efficiency, and dust particulate size distributions. Particulates larger than 1.775 μm were removed by the filter. Our results showed that a mass flow of 330 g/min for coarse granules and a mass flow of 1100 g/min for fine granules provided optimal collection efficiency and particulate size distribution. The proposed design can aid the development of high-temperature systems in power plants.

Climate changes are nowadays reality and affect all aspects of everyday life. One of the places where these changes influence the society the most is the Brazilian Ceará region and Jaguaribara basin that suffer long-lasting, devastating drought cycles. They have a dramatic negative impact on local economy, forcing change in business models. This work presents the valorisation of wastes and residues from local fish, prawns, and the vegetable-cultivation industry via biogas production forced to adapt to these new circumstances. Along a single year, as much as 189.74 tonnes of wastes and residues can be processed by the biogas production facility, producing as much as 94 GJ of cooling energy and 1 tonne of biofertiliser monthly. Even for such a small biogas production facility, the NPV is positive already after 11 years; its IRR is 6.2%, and accumulated ROI for 20 years of operation is as high as 77.8%. This work demonstrates that a valorisation of industrial wastes and residues via bioga... [more]

Nanoporous graphene membranes have drawn special attention in the gas-separation processes due to their unique structure and properties. The complexity of the physical understanding of such membrane designs restricts their widespread use for gas-separation applications. In the present study, we strive to propose promising designs to face this technical challenge. In this regard, we investigated the permeation and separation of the mixture of adsorptive gases CO2 and CH4 through a two-stage bilayer sub-nanometer porous graphene membrane design using molecular dynamics simulation. A CH4/CO2 gashouse mixture with 80 mol% CH4 composition was generated using the benchmarked force-fields and was forced to cross through the porous graphene membrane design by a constant piston velocity. Three chambers are considered to be feeding, transferring, and capturing to examine the permeation and separation of molecules under the effect of the two-stage membrane. April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: energy savings, envelope design standards, internal wall insulation, moisture effects
The energy-saving requirements for most buildings focus on improving the insulation and airtightness of a building’s envelope. In this paper, the authors have investigated the effect of additional internal insulation on energy consumption for heating and cooling in a residential building. Energy performance analyses were conducted for buildings with four internal thermal insulation systems in three locations using the WUFI Plus software. The Global Cost Method and Simply Pay Back Time have been used to assess and compare the economic viability of the retrofit systems. The results show that, in relation to energy, retrofitting with internal wall insulation can be an alternative to traditional external insulation. The assessment of internal insulation for low-energy buildings, however, cannot be conducted based on economic criteria. The usual approach of Simply Pay Back Time has exceptionally long payback time, which is unacceptable. In turn, the Global Cost Method, can only be used to c... [more]

Keywords: absorption chiller, data center, Sustainability, thermal pollution, waste heat recovery
Modern data centers are playing a pivotal role in the global economic situation. Unlike high-quality source of waste heat, it is challenging to recover the decentralized and low-quality waste heat sourced from data centers due to numerous technological and economic hurdles. As such, it is of the utmost importance to explore possible pathways to maximize the energy efficiency of the data centers and to utilize their heat recovery. Absorption chiller systems are a promising technology for the recovery of waste heat at ultra-low temperatures. In fact, the low temperature heat discharged from data centers cannot be retrieved with conventional heat recovery systems. Therefore, the present study investigated feasibility of waste heat recovery from data centers using an absorption chiller system, with the ultimate goal of electrical energy production. Critical Issues and Opportunities for Producing Biomethane in Italy
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biomethane, CIC, EU Directive 2015/1513, ILUC
Nowadays, most Italian biogas produces electricity even though recent political incentives are promoting biomethane from biogas by “upgrading” it. The aim of this paper is to focus on the regulatory framework for producing biomethane from new or already-existent anaerobic digestion plants. The complexity and lack of knowledge of the regulations on biofuel production and of anaerobic digested biomethane from waste and by-products create difficulties of both interpretation and application. Consequently, the aim of this paper is to analyze the regulations for producing biomethane, underline the critical issues and opportunities, and evaluate whether an electrical plant built in the last 10 years in Italy can really be converted to a biomethane plant, thereby lengthening its lifespan. Three case studies were considered to look more closely into applying Italian biomethane incentives and to simulate the types of incentivization in agriculture with examples based on certain fuel types typica... Biogas plants may support the transformation towards renewable-based and integrated energy systems by providing dispatchable co-generation as well as opportunities for biogas upgrading or power-to-X conversion. In this paper, a simulation model that comprises the main dynamics of the internal processes of a biogas plant is developed. Based on first-order kinetics of the anaerobic digestion process, the biogas production of an input feeding schedule of raw material can be estimated. The output of the plant in terms of electrical and thermal energy is validated against empirical data from a 3-MW biogas plant on the Danish island of Bornholm. The results show that the model provides an accurate representation of the processes within a biogas plant. The paper further provides insights on the functioning of the biogas plant on Bornholm as well as discusses upgrading potentials of biogas to biomethane at the plant from an energy perspective.

Piezoelectric energy harvesters have attracted much attention because they are crucial in portable industrial applications. Here, we report on a high-power device based on a magneto-mechanical piezoelectric energy harvester to scavenge the AC magnetic field from a power-line cable for industrial applications. The electrical output performance of the harvester (×4 layers) reached an output voltage of 60.8 Vmax, an output power of 215 mWmax (98 mWrms), and a power density of 94.5 mWmax/cm3 (43.5 mWrms/cm3) at an impedance matching of 5 kΩ under a magnetic field of 80 μT. The multilayer energy harvester enables high-output performance, presenting an obvious advantage given this improved level of output power. Finite element simulations were also performed to support the experimental observations. The generator was successfully used to power a wireless sensor network (WSN) for use on an IoT device composed of a temperature sensor in a thermal power station. The result shows that the magnet... April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biochemical methane potential test, fermentable organic dry matter content, gross calorific value, mass and energy balance
For calculation of biological efficiency of a biogas plant (BP), it is required to determine the specific methane potential (SMP) of the substrate. A study comparing available methods for determination of SMP and the comparison with data of full-scale BPs is missing but necessary according to the differences in process conditions between both. Firstly, mass and mass associated energy balances of 33 full-scale BPs were calculated and evaluated. The results show plausible data for only 55% of the investigated BPs. Furthermore, conversion and yield efficiencies were calculated according to six different methods for SMP determination. The results show a correlation between the measured on-site specific methane yield and the calculated SMP by methods based on biological degradability. However, these methods underestimate the SMP. Calculated SMPs based on calorific values are higher, but less sensitive. A combination of biochemical and energetical methods is a promising approach to evaluate... [more]
