Performance of an Innovative Bio-Based Wood Chip Storage Pile Cover—Can It Replace Plastic Tarps?
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: bio-pile cover, bioenergy, dry matter loss, forest fuels, stemwood chips, wood chip storage
There is currently great general interest in reducing the use of fossil-based materials. Fossil-based tarps are still widely used as cover for wood chip storage piles, causing additional waste or requiring further waste treatment in the supply chain. This study aimed to investigate the performance of an innovative bio-based wood chip pile cover compared to conventional treatments (plastic-covered and uncovered) in eastern Finnish conditions. The experiment evaluated the drying process during the storage of stemwood chips during 5.9 months of storage. It included the developments of temperature, moisture content, heating value, energy content, basic density, particle size distribution, and the dry matter losses of a total of six piles. As a result, the forest stemwood chips dried by 11%, with dry-matter losses of 4.3%, when covered with the bio-pile cover. Using the plastic covering, the forest stemwood chips dried by 22%, with dry matter losses of 2.9%. At the end of the experiment, th... [more]

Clash Cost Analysis in Electrical Installations Based on BIM Technologies
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: AEC, BIM, clash analysis, cost analysis, electrical installations
One of the core features of delivering a Building Information Modelling (BIM) project is design coordination and clash detection. In the traditional way of conducting investments, the design process consists in the separate work of individual industry specialists on an individual part of the project and checking its compliance with coordination checkpoints. Building information modelling/management is emerging as an innovative way to virtually design and manage projects. Clashes are one of the most problematic elements in construction. They can interfere in the decision-making process by generating unexpected costs of additional materials, work and actions. The purpose of the following paper is to analyze the impact of BIM on limiting cost of clashes and also to check how clashes affect the unforeseen costs of a construction investment and how the BIM methodology can help to reduce them, especially in electrical installations. Basic construction collisions with algorithms of their solu... [more]

Self-Healing Silicones for Outdoor High Voltage Insulation: Mechanism, Applications and Measurements
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fillers, outdoor insulation, self-healing, silicone rubber
This paper discusses the state of the art in the application of self-healing silicone-based materials for outdoor high-voltage insulation. Both the dynamic behavior of the dimethyl side groups of silicone rubber and the diffusion of a bulk siloxane to maintain low surface energy are respectively reported as intrinsic mechanisms responsible for the self-healing of silicone rubber. Localization, temporality, mobility, and the type of synthesis are the aspects defining the efficiency of the self-healing ability of silicone rubber. In addition, the deterioration of the self-healing ability with filler loaded into silicone rubber insulation housing composites is discussed. Taking the self-healing property into consideration among the other properties of silicone rubber insulators, such as tracking and erosion resistance, can be a useful design practice at the material development stage. Hydrophobicity retention, recovery, and transfer measurements are discussed as useful indicators of the s... [more]

Analysis of Reject Water Formed in the Mechanical Dewatering Process of Digested Sludge Conditioned by Physical and Chemical Methods
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: conditioning, quality, reject water, sewage sludge, sonification
Reject water separated from digested sludge may be a potential source of nutrients due to its high content. However, most often, reject water after sludge dewatering is directed to sewage lines at wastewater treatment plants, negatively affecting their operation, especially in the biological part. The activities related to sludge conditioning before dewatering have a direct impact on the quality of the reject water. The reject water of raw digested sludge is characterized by very high concentrations of ammonium nitrogen, at 1718 mgN-NH4+/dm3; phosphates, at 122.4 mgPO43−/dm3; and chemical oxygen demand (COD), at 2240 mgO2/dm3. The objective of the research was to determine the impact of selected sludge conditioning methods on the quality of reject water obtained after sludge dewatering. The following parameters were analyzed in the reject water: the chemical oxygen demand (COD), phosphates, ammonium nitrogen, and total suspended solids (TSS). It has been observed that the sludge sonifi... [more]

Design, Energy, Environmental and Cost Analysis of an Integrated Collector Storage Solar Water Heater Based on Multi-Criteria Methodology
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: environmental and economy profile, ICS solar water heater, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), multi-criteria decision analysis, thermal energy analysis
The paper presents a design and operation analysis of an Integrated Collector Storage (ICS) solar water heater, which consists of an asymmetric Compound Parabolic Concentrating (CPC) reflector trough, while the water tank comprises two concentric cylinders. The annulus between these vessels is partially depressurized and contains a small amount of water in the bottom of the outer vessel which dominantly contributes to the heat transfer from the outer to the inner cylinder. A multi-criteria optimization algorithm is applied to re-evaluate the design specifications of the parabolic surface, thus modifying the design of the entire ICS system and predict the necessary number of units for achieving the highest possible effectiveness with minimized fabrication costs and environmental impacts. The environmental footprint of the device is assessed through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The produced thermal energy in conjunction with the environmental and economic results are evaluated as a funct... [more]

Relationship between Countries’ Energy Indicators and the Indices of GVC Participation: The Case of APEC Member Economies
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: APEC, domestic value added, energy consumption, energy imports, energy intensity, foreign value added, fuel exports, global value chain, GVC participation index
In the 21st century the importance of global value chains continues to grow. There is a scientific gap in the research on the relationship between countries’ energy indicators and the GVC participation indices. Based on the analysis of the APEC member economies’ GVC participation, the presence of quantifiable links between the countries’ energy indicators and GVC participation indices was identified. APEC member countries have a higher index of forward GVC participation compared to a rather low index of backward participation. We have confirmed the following hypotheses. Countries with higher energy consumption and countries exporting fuel have higher forward GVC participation. Energy importing countries and countries with higher energy intensity have higher backward GVC participation. Countries with higher energy intensity have lower forward GVC participation than countries with lower energy intensity. It was concluded that concerted efforts of APEC member economies are needed to incre... [more]

Formation of an Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil Similar Type of Explosive under Fire Conditions: Materials Based on Selected Polymers (PUR)
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ammonium nitrate, ANFO, polyurethane foam, self-acting formation of explosives, sponge
Polyurethanes (PURs) are a group of polymers with the most versatile properties and the broadest spectrum of application. Their name comes from the urethane group. PURs were introduced to the market on a large-scale basis by Bayer in 1942, in the form of Perlon U and Igamid U fibers produced by gradual polyaddition of diisocyanates and polyols. The development of PURs-production technology and the multitude of applications resulted in their widespread use. This group is so extensive that polyurethanes alone accounted for about 6% of the global production of polymers (2019)—most of them in the form of foam. Therefore, polyurethane can be found in a huge number of products—some of them stored in the vicinity of ammonium nitrate (AN). In the previous two articles, we showed that polymers and AN—stored within the same building—in fire conditions may, under certain circumstances, spontaneously transform into a material of explosive properties. The aim of this article is to check whether PUR... [more]

Optimization of CSP Plants with Thermal Energy Storage for Electricity Price Stability in Spot Markets
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: concentrating solar plants, power market, solar, storage, storage, thermal energy storage
This research presents a novel optimization strategy for concentrating solar power (CSP) plants with thermal energy storage (TES) systems that aims to stabilize and reduce electricity prices in spot markets. In the current international scenario of initiatives with regulatory changes aiming to reduce climate change effects and therefore CO2 emissions, many countries are reducing the fossil fuel share in their respective electrical systems and increasing electrical renewable energy systems. These carbon free generation systems have inherent problems such as their intermittence which, combined with the lack of high-scale energy storage systems, cause a stability risk in electrical grid systems and require conventional fuel systems to match demand and production. In this research, we analyze spot price markets using a marginal price system that relies on natural gas and is quite sensitive to an increase in fuel prices, causing a direct increase in the final energy cost in systems with a h... Variable Structure Disturbance Observer Based Dynamic Surface Control of Electrohydraulic Systems with Parametric Uncertainty
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: backstepping iteration, dynamic surface control, electrohydraulic systems, parametric uncertainty, variable structure disturbance observers
This paper focuses on the position tracking control issue of electrohydraulic systems (EHS). The dynamical model of EHS is introduced in the first place, based on which a type of Variable Structure Disturbance Observer (VSDO) is constructed for EHS to estimate the parametric uncertainty the EHS possesses. Then, a backstepping controller is designed under VSDO to realize the high precision position tracking purpose. To avoid the phenomenon of differential explosion, a dynamic surface control method is adopted in this paper, which improved the position tracking control performance of EHS. The proposed theoretical results are verified by numerical simulation and experiment to illustrate the feasibility.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: FindFit, Modelling, one diode, Ortiz–Conde method, physical parameters, Schottky barrier diode
In the current work, the exact analytical expression of the current−voltage characteristics, which are given in terms of the LambertW function, is used to extract the physical parameters of organic and inorganic Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs). The extraction is achieved by a variety of methods using the experimental I−V characteristics. The organic SBD is based on a Poly (3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyle) conjugated polymer (P3HT) with Al contact, measured at 300 K. Regarding the inorganic SBDs, one is based on Iridium−Silicon Carbide (Ir−SiC), measured at 300 K, and the second diode is based on Gold−Gallium Arsenide (Au−GaAs), measured at 200 K. The numerical characteristics based on the physical parameters extracted by the presented methods are in good agreement with the experimental data. The determination coefficient of the modeling methods for the three SBDs is higher than 99.99%.

Multi-Energy Concern as an Example of the Implementation of Agenda 2030: Poland as a Case Study
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: Agenda 2030, capital concentration, mergers and acquisitions, multi-energy concern, the energy sector in Poland
The motive for the functioning of enterprises in the market economy is the maximization of benefits by achieving positive financial results with the minimum possible involvement of capital. The positive results achieved are perceived very positively by the stakeholders. To achieve this, it is necessary to carry out reorganization processes (mergers and acquisitions) within capital groups, which are perceived as necessary (positive) measures. These phenomena have been observed in the energy sector for many years, and the years 2010−2021 were adopted as the research period. The aim of this article is to attempt to answer the question of whether the multi-energy concern is the result of activities carried out in light of the 2030 Agenda. The effect of merging the entities is capital concentration. This fact has been verified by reviewing changes in the structures of capital groups in the energy sector against the background of the largest mergers and acquisitions in Poland in terms of val... Technical and Economic Assessment of Supermarket and Power Substation Waste Heat Integration into Existing District Heating Systems
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: district heating, heat exchanger, heat pumps, pinch analysis, waste heat
District heating systems are almost always located in densely populated urban areas where various heat sources are available, such as cooling and refrigeration systems in supermarkets, shopping malls, and power transformers. These urban sources often have a large share of waste heat, which is usually emitted into the environment. This waste heat could be used to partially cover the thermal load in district heating systems. The biggest challenge for their integration is the spatial distribution of urban heat sources in relation to the existing heat network and the temporal distribution of the availability of waste heat energy throughout the year. In this paper, we have developed an economic assessment model for the integration of urban heat sources into existing district heating systems. By the hourly merit order of waste heat utilization technologies based on pinch analysis, we have defined the most suitable integration of urban heat sources into existing district heating systems. March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery state-of-charge (SOC), battery state-of-health (SOH), electrified powertrain, energy management, hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), optimal control
Dynamic programming (DP) is currently the reference optimal energy management approach for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). However, several research concerns arise regarding the effective application of DP for optimal HEV control problems which involve a significant number of control variables, state variables and optimization constraints. This paper deals with an optimal control problem for a full parallel P2 HEV with constraints on battery state-of-charge (SOC), battery lifetime in terms of state-of-health (SOH), and smooth driving in terms of the frequencies of internal combustion engine (ICE) activations and gear shifts over time. The DP formulation for the considered HEV control problem is outlined, yet its practical application is demonstrated as unfeasible due to a lack of computational power and memory in current desktop computers. To overcome this drawback, a computationally efficient version of DP is proposed which is named Slope-weighted Rapid Dynamic Programming (SRDP). Co... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control method of energy flow, entropy, free energy, Kr form of the Kedem–Katchalsky–Peusner equations, mathematical modeling, membrane transport phenomena, porous media, transport Peusner’s network thermodynamics
The internal energy (U-energy) conversion to free energy (F-energy) and energy dissipation (S-energy) is a basic process that enables the continuity of life on Earth. Here, we present a novel method of evaluating F-energy in a membrane system containing ternary solutions of non-electrolytes based on the Kr version of the Kedem−Katchalsky−Peusner (K−K−P) formalism for concentration polarization conditions. The use of this formalism allows the determination of F-energy based on the production of S-energy and coefficient of the energy conversion efficiency. The K−K−P formalism requires the calculation of the Peusner coefficients Kijr and Kdetr (i, j ∈ {1, 2, 3}, r = A, B), which are necessary to calculate S-energy, the degree of coupling and coefficients of energy conversion efficiency. In turn, the equations for S-energy and coefficients of energy conversion efficiency are used in the F-energy calculations. Subject: Environment
Keywords: green technology innovation, heterogeneity analysis, industrial enterprise, pollution charges
Enterprises’ green technology innovation is critical to achieving the “win-win” of enterprise competitiveness and environmental protection. The impact of environmental regulation on green technology innovation by enterprises has been widely considered, but the conclusion has not yet been determined, and needs to be studied in detail. To this end, we studied the impact of pollution charge policy on different types of green technology innovation by industrial enterprises in China. We found that (1) the impact of pollution charges on most types of green technology innovation by enterprises has increased significantly over time; (2) the pollution charge policy has a certain inhibition effect on the end-of-pipe technology innovation, but can promote the process improvement of reducing industrial wastewater emissions; (3) there is a U-shaped relationship between the pollution charges and some green technological innovation (e.g., emission intensity of SO2, industrial wastewater emission inte... Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: charging, electric vehicles, fixed price, mechanism design, Scheduling, VCG
The industry related to electric vehicles (EVs) has seen a substantial increase in recent years, as such vehicles have the ability to significantly reduce total CO2 emissions and the related global warming effect. In this paper, we focus on the problem of allocating EVs to charging stations, scheduling and pricing their charging. Specifically, we developed a Mixed Integer Program (MIP) which executes offline and optimally allocates EVs to charging stations. On top, we propose two alternative mechanisms to price the electricity the EVs charge. The first mechanism is a typical fixed-price one, while the second is a variation of the Vickrey−Clark−Groves (VCG) mechanism. We also developed online solutions that incrementally call the MIP-based algorithm and solve it for branches of EVs. In all cases, the EVs’ aim is to minimize the price to pay and the impact on their driving schedule, acting as self-interested agents. We conducted a thorough empirical evaluation of our mechanisms and we ob... [more]

Control Strategy of Interlinking Converter in Hybrid Microgrid Based on Line Impedance Estimation
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: compensation, hybrid AC/DC microgrid, interlinking converter, line impedance estimation
Due to the voltage drop of the line impedance, power-transfer deviation occurs in the interlinking converter (IC) of hybrid microgrids. In this paper, an IC control strategy in hybrid microgrids is proposed, which can estimate the line resistance precisely. Moreover, the proposed method can easily realize accurate power transmission between sub-grids and maintain the power balance of hybrid microgrid. Firstly, one specified small signal is injected into the IC at the AC bus of the distributed generation so as to estimate the line impedance. The frequency of the injected small signal is highly relevant to the AC bus voltage. As a result, the IC can accurately detect its line impedance by extracting the injected small signal frequency with a filter and phase-lock-loop (PLL) without communication. Secondly, with the line impedance estimation, the voltage drop on the line can be compensated with local information of the IC, and consequently, accurate power transfer can be realized. Finally... It is essential for the electricity sector to analyze and determine the distribution capacity throughput and apply new methods aimed at increasing the capacity of the transmission system. Consequently, the transition to modern electricity networks is two-sided, i.e., involving technological and social modifications. The demand response (DR) redistributes consumption away from peak times when grid load and costs are the highest. It incentivizes customers to use electricity when supply is high and inexpensive due to various market mechanisms. The present DR policy proposals stress the importance of fostering behavioral change through competitive pricing and customer participation in reducing carbon emissions and implementing smart energy solutions (including monitoring tools, such as smart meters and applications).
