Establishment and Solution of Four Variable Water Hammer Mathematical Model for Conveying Pipe
Jiehao Duan, Changjun Li, Jin Jin
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas-liquid two-phase flow, pipeline, pressure, velocity, water hammer
Transient flow in pipe is a much debated topic in the field of hydrodynamics. The water hammer effect caused by instantaneous valve closing is an important branch of transient flow. At present, the fluid density is regarded as a constant in the study of the water hammer effect in pipe. When there is gas in the pipe, the variation range of density is large, and the pressure-wave velocity should also change continuously along the pipe. This study considers the interaction between pipeline fluid motion and water hammer wave propagation based on the essence of water hammer, with the pressure, velocity, density and overflow area set as variables. A new set of water hammer calculation equations was deduced and solved numerically. The effects of different valve closing time, flow rate and gas content on pressure distribution and the water hammer effect were studied. It was found that with the increase in valve closing time, the maximum fluctuating pressure at the pipe end decreased, and the t... [more]
Thermal Draft Load Coefficient for Heating Load Differences Caused by Stack-Driven Infiltration by Floor in Multifamily High-Rise Buildings
Juhyun Bak, Jabeom Koo, Sungmin Yoon, Hyunwoo Lim
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heating load, infiltration, multifamily high-rise buildings, stack effect, thermal draft load coefficient
The stack effect is dominant in multifamily high-rise buildings (MFHRBs) in winter because of the considerable height of MFHRBs, which causes a difference in the infiltration amount between floors. This difference causes a heating load difference between floors in a MFHRB. However, there are no indicators to quantify the heating load differences in previous studies. In this article, an indicator—the thermal draft load coefficient (TDLC)—is proposed that can be used to estimate and evaluate the differences between floors in a MFHRB. The TDLC is built on a theoretical model of the stack effect and leakage area of the airflow paths, considering the entire building airflow in a MFHRB. The theoretical model was validated by comparison with a simulation model. The winter average coefficient of variation of the root mean square error and the normalized mean bias error of the theoretical model were acceptable (17.1% and 9.3%, respectively). The TDLC resulted in a maximum of 2.5 and a minimum o... [more]
Estimation of Grid Reinforcement Costs Triggered by Future Grid Customers: Influence of the Quantification Method (Scaling vs. Large-Scale Simulation) and Coincidence Factors (Single vs. Multiple Application)
Bernd Thormann, Thomas Kienberger
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution power networks, electric vehicle, grid reinforcement, grid simulation, heat pump, photovoltaic
The integration of future grid customers, e.g., electric vehicles, heat pumps, or photovoltaic modules, will challenge existing low-voltage power grids in the upcoming years. Hence, distribution system operators must quantify future grid reinforcement measures and resulting costs early. On this account, this work initially evaluates different methods to quantify future grid reinforcement needs, applied by the current state of research. Thereby, it indicates the significance of large-scale grid simulations, i.e., simulating several thousand low-voltage grids, to quantify grid reinforcements accurately. Otherwise, a selected area’s total grid reinforcement costs might be misjudged significantly. Due to its fast application, deterministic grid simulations based on coincidence factors are most commonly used in the current state of research to simulate several thousand grids. Hence, in the second step, recent studies’ approaches to applying grid customers’ coincidence factors are evaluated:... [more]

Nicholas Davison, Jaime Borbolla Gaxiola, Divya Gupta, Anurag Garg, Timothy Cockerill, Yuzhou Tang, Xueliang Yuan, Andrew Ross
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal substitution, food waste, GHG mitigation, hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonisation, methane avoidance
Hydrothermal carbonisation is a promising technology for greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation through landfill avoidance and power generation, as it can convert high-moisture wastes into bio-coal which can be used for coal substitution. The GHG mitigation potential associated with landfill avoidance of high-moisture food waste (FW) generated in India, China and the EU was calculated and the potential for coal substitution to replace either grid energy, hard coal, or lignite consumption were determined. Different HTC processing conditions were evaluated including temperature and residence times and their effect on energy consumption and energy recovery. The greatest mitigation potential was observed at lower HTC temperatures and shorter residence times with the bio-coal replacing lignite. China had the greatest total mitigation potential (194 MT CO2 eq), whereas India had the greatest mitigation per kg of FW (1.2 kgCO2/kg FW). Significant proportions of overall lignite consumption could be s... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: demand response, dynamic electricity pricing scheme, linear regression, Particle Swarm Optimization, renewable energy resources
The green innovations in the energy sector are smart solutions to meet the excessive power requirements through renewable energy resources (RERs). These resources have forwarded the revolutionary relief in control of carbon dioxide gaseous emissions from traditional energy resources. The use of RERs in a heuristic manner is necessary to meet the demand side management in microgrids (MGs). The pricing scheme limitations hinder the profit maximization of MG and their customers. In addition, recent pricing schemes lack mechanistic underpinning. Therefore, a dynamic electricity pricing scheme through linear regression is designed for RERs to maximize the profit of load customers (changeable and unchangeable) in MG. The demand response optimization problem is solved through the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique. The proposed dynamic electricity pricing scheme is evaluated under two different scenarios. The simulation results verified that the proposed dynamic electricity pricing s... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: high voltage cable, Markov chain Monte Carlo, state evaluation, weight space
In view of the problem that the weight value given by the previous state evaluation method is fixed and single and cannot analyze the influence of the weight vector deviation on the evaluation result, a method based on the weight space Markov chain and Monte Carlo method (Markov chains Monte Carlo, MCMC) is proposed. The sampling method is used for evaluating the condition of high-voltage cables. The weight vector set obtained by MCMC sampling and the comprehensive degradation degree of the high-voltage cable sample are weighted and summed then compared in pairs to obtain the comprehensive degradation degree result. The status probability value and overall priority ranking probability of the object to be evaluated are obtained based on probability statistics, and the order of maintenance is determined according to the status probability value and the ranking result. It is realized that the cable line that needs to be identified in the follow-up defect is clarified according to the eval... [more]

Helena Schmidt, Gerdien de Vries, Reint Jan Renes, Roland Schmehl
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acceptability, acceptance, airborne wind energy, opposition, perception, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Airborne wind energy (AWE) systems use tethered flying devices to harvest higher-altitude winds to produce electricity. For the success of the technology, it is crucial to understand how people perceive and respond to it. If concerns about the technology are not taken seriously, it could delay or prevent implementation, resulting in increased costs for project developers and a lower contribution to renewable energy targets. This literature review assessed the current state of knowledge on the social acceptance of AWE. A systematic literature search led to the identification of 40 relevant publications that were reviewed. The literature expected that the safety, visibility, acoustic emissions, ecological impacts, and the siting of AWE systems impact to which extent the technology will be accepted. The reviewed literature viewed the social acceptance of AWE optimistically but lacked scientific evidence to back up its claims. It seemed to overlook the fact that the impact of AWE’s charact... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: economic and production-related indicators, Energy Efficiency, implications in the industrial sector, logistic regression, technological gap
Increased industrial energy efficiency (EE) has become one of the main environmental actions to mitigate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, contributing also to industrial competitiveness, with several implications on the production system and cost management. Unfortunately, literature is currently lacking empirical evidence on the impact of energy efficiency solutions on production. Thus, this work primarily aims at investigating the economic and production-related influence on the reduction in industrial energy consumption, considering the cross-cutting technologies HVAC, motors, lighting systems and air compressor systems. The analysis is performed using data from previous studies that characterized the main EE measures for the cross-cutting technologies. Four logistic models were built to understand how costs and production influence energy efficiency across such cross-cutting technologies. In this way, motivating industries to implement measures to reduce electrical consumption, offe... [more]

Domagoj Bilandžija, Davor Vinko, Marinko Barukčić
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: 3D transmitting coil design, Genetic Algorithm, homogeneous magnetic field, Optimization, wireless power transfer
In magnetically coupled resonant wireless power transfer (MCR-WPT) systems, the nonhomogeneous magnetic field of the transmitting coil can lead to frequency splitting phenomena and lower efficiency. In this paper, a 3D transmitting coil (TX) with a homogeneous magnetic field distribution is proposed. The proposed coil structure consists of two layers with different numbers of turns per layer, i.e., with different current distributions. To achieve a homogeneous magnetic field distribution with a high magnetic field value and a low profile of the 3D coil structure, the optimal layer placement and current distribution were optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA). The prototype of the optimized coil was fabricated, and its magnetic field distribution was measured. The measurement results agreed more than 95% with the simulation results. The measured homogeneous area was at least 12.5% larger than reported in the literature. By using a different current distribution, the profile of the 3D... [more]
How Much Energy Do We Need to Fly with Greater Agility? Energy Consumption and Performance of an Attitude Stabilization Controller in a Quadcopter Drone: A Modified MPC vs. PID
Michał Okulski, Maciej Ławryńczuk
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: attitude controller, energy consumption, GPC, Model Predictive Control, MPC, PID, quadcopter, UAV
Increasing demand for faster and more agile Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, drones) is observed in many scenarios, including but not limited to medical supply or Search-and-Rescue (SAR) missions. Exceptional maneuverability is critical for robust obstacle avoidance during autonomous flights. A novel modification to the Model Predictive Controller (MPC) is proposed, which drastically improves the speed of the attitude controller of our quadcopter drone. The modified MPC is suitable for the onboard microcontroller and the 400 Hz main control loop. The peak and total energy consumption and the performance of the attitude controllers are assessed: the modified MPC and the default Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID). The tests were conducted in a custom-implemented Flight Mode in the ArduCopter software stack, securing the drone in a test harness, which guarantees the experiments are repetitive. The ultimate MPC greatly increases maneuverability of the drone and may inspire more research... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: large elevation difference pipe, oil transmission pipeline, Simulation, two-phase flow
Oil pipeline construction and operation in mountainous areas have increased in southwestern China, with oil consumption increasing. Such liquid pipelines laid in mountainous areas continuously undulate along the terrain, resulting in many large elevation difference pipe segments. Serious gas block problems often occur during the commissioning process of these pipelines due to the gas/air accumulation at the high point of the pipe, which causes pipeline overpressure and vibration, and even safety accidents such as bursting pipes. To solve this problem, the gas−liquid replacement model and its numerical solution are established with consideration of the initial gas accumulation formation and the gas segment compression processes in a U-shaped pipe during the initial start-up operation. Additionally, considering the interactions of the gas-phase transfer in the continuous U-shaped pipe, and the influence of the length, inclination angle, and backpressure on the air vent process, the gas m... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed power generation, photovoltaic system, power distribution, power quality, power system analysis computing, smart inverter, volt–var function
This paper describes the process of setting up an appropriate volt−var curve for the reactive power control of a photovoltaic (PV) inverter interconnected to a distribution line that is voltage controlled by a load ratio control transformer (LRT). Computer simulations with 360 patterns of volt−var curves applied to five actual distribution line models are presented. The number of patterns was narrowed down to 23 by using voltage, distribution-line loss, number of LRT tap operations, and a new evaluation index, the match ratio. When a power-factor constraint is imposed on the PV inverter, it may not output the reactive power according to the volt−var curve depending on the active power output. The match rate is an index to show the percentage of the operating points of the PV inverter that conform with the volt−var curve. By evaluating the match rate, it can be demonstrated if the PV inverter efficiently contributes to the voltage control, which greatly contributes to narrowing of the v... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytical method, Planning, voltage profile improvement
Electrical energy is critical to a country’s socioeconomic progress. Distribution system expansion planning addresses the services that must be installed for the distribution networks to meet the expected load need, while also meeting different operational and technical limitations. The incorporation of distributed generation sources (DGs) alters the operating characteristics of modern power systems, resulting in major economic and technical benefits, such as simplified distribution network expansion planning, lower power losses, and improved voltage profile. Thus, in this study, an analytical method is used to design the expansion planning of the Addis North distribution network considering the integration of optimal sizes of distributed generations for the projected demand growths. To evaluate the capability of the existing Addis North distribution network and its capability to supply reliable power considering future expansion, the load demand forecast for the years 2020−2030 is don... Long-Horizon Nonlinear Model Predictive Control of Modular Multilevel Converters
Victor Daniel Reyes Dreke, Mircea Lazar
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: modular multilevel converter (MMC), nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC), power transfer control (PTC), ultra-fast charging stations (UFCSs)
Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) are a topology that can scale several voltage levels to obtain higher efficiency and lower harmonics than most voltage-source converters. MMCs are very attractive for renewable energy applications and fast charging stations for electric vehicles, where they can improve performance and reduce costs. However, due to the complex architecture and the large number of submodules, the current control of modular multilevel converters is a challenging task. The standard solution in practice relies on hierarchical decoupling and single-input-single-output control loops, which are limited in performance. Linearization-based model predictive control was already proposed for current control in MMCs, as it can optimize transient response and better handle constraints. In this paper, we show that the validity of linear MMC models significantly limits the prediction horizon length, and we propose a nonlinear MPC (NMPC) solution for current control in MMCs to solve... Protection Coordination Index Assessment Using Fuzzy Logic Controller
Choong-Koo Chang, Ahmed Mohamed Elmashtoly
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuzzy logic controller, overcurrent relay, protection coordination index, protection index, protection level assessment
This paper proposes the assessment method of the protection coordination index (PCI) for overcurrent protection relay and upstream relay. The protection coordination index is an indicator of how properly the equipment is protected by protective relay. The PCI is used to check the appropriateness of the protection coordination for both the component-wise and pair-wise. The protection index of each protection component of the integrated digital relay is assessed by a fuzzy logic controller. Then the device-level protection index and the composite protection coordination index between up and downstream relays are also assessed. Since the setting criteria of the overcurrent relays are given in a certain range rather than a crisp value, it is difficult to indicate the protection level of the protective system as an index. Currently, there is no way of knowing how well the overcurrent relay setting is. Thus, a method was proposed to evaluate the protection index of overcurrent systems using... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: oil charging history, oil group classification, oil migration direction, South China Sea, the Fushan Depression
The Paleogene sandstone reservoir in the Huangtong Sag of the Fushan Depression is one of the most commercially prolific oil accumulations in the Beibuwan Basin, South China Sea. In this study, twenty-seven crude oil samples from four oilfields in the sag were geochemically analyzed and classified into three oil groups. Oils in the Meitai and Hongguang oilfields show similar geochemical characteristics, with relatively abundant C30 4α-methyl-24-ethylcholestanes and low contents of oleanane and C19+20 tricyclic terpanes (TT), and therefore may be derived from the same source kitchen. Oils from the Yong’an oilfield have a greater proportion of oleanane and C19+20 TT compounds. Oils from the Chaoyang oilfield have intermediate contents of these biomarkers and proportionate values of other related parameters. The unimodal distribution pattern of homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions found in all the Paleogene reservoirs indicates a single episode of charging. Combining this under... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: microsimulation, pollutant emission, road infrastructure, roundabout, vehicle-specific power
In line with globally shared environmental sustainability goals, the shift towards citizen-friendly mobility is changing the way people move through cities and road user behaviour. Building a sustainable road transport requires design knowledge to develop increasingly green road infrastructures and monitoring the environmental impacts from mobile crowdsourced data. In this view, the paper presents an empirically based methodology that integrates the vehicle-specific power (VSP) model and microscopic traffic simulation (AIMSUN) to estimate second-by-second vehicle emissions at urban roundabouts. The distributions of time spent in each VSP mode from instantaneous vehicle trajectory data gathered in the field via smartphone were the starting point of the analysis. The versatility of AIMSUN in calibrating the model parameters to better reflect the field-observed speed-time trajectories and to enhance the estimation accuracy was assessed. The conversion of an existing roundabout within the... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: agricultural law, agricultural policy, economic profitability, marginal land use, short rotation coppice of willow/poplar
The production of lignocellulose biomass on dedicated plantations is an option that facilitates the implementation of sustainable development policy. The novelty of this type of research is that it involves the use of various types of methods—economic and legal analyses within a particular subject. This makes it possible to obtain a holistic view of the chosen case study. The purpose of this study was to determine whether setting up a Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) plantation of willow (Salix spp.) and poplar (Populus spp.) was economically profitable and if the legal regulations supported this type of production. The economic data are based on an experimental case study. The economic profitability of the plantations was assessed through an analysis of discounted cash flows, net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), and profitability index (PI). The legal analysis of the relevant EU and Polish legal solutions was based on a dogmatic approach. The study demonstrated that SRC... [more]

Jianmeng Sun, Ping Feng, Peng Chi, Weichao Yan
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: numerical simulation, pore structure, resistivity, saturation, tight sandstone
Core samples of the tight sandstone reservoir in the Bonan Oilfield were analyzed by using multiple petrophysical experimental techniques, then a multi-scale three-dimensional digital rock model was constructed. The pore structure parameters of tight sandstone and homogeneous Berea sandstone were compared. The electrical simulation method based on the digital rock model was utilized to quantitatively reveal the influence of five micro-pore structure parameters (pore size, throat size, pore-throat size, coordination number, and shape factor) on the rock’s electrical properties. In addition, the saturation of tight sandstone reservoirs was evaluated in combination with the three-component automatic mixed-connection conductivity model. The results show that the “non-Archie” phenomenon in sandstone is obvious, which is mainly caused by the small radius of the maximum connected pore throat and the complex structure of the pore throat. We noted that: with an increase in pore radius, throat r... [more]

Keywords: comprehensive performance evaluation, densification, liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen, subcooling combination matching
Densified liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen is a promising propulsion fuel in the future. In order to systematically demonstrate the benefits and challenges of densified liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen, a transient thermodynamical model considering the heat leakage, temperature rise, engine thrust, pressurization pressure of the tank, and wall thickness of tank is developed in the present paper, and the performance of densified liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen as propulsion fuel is further evaluated in actual application. For liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen tanks at different structural dimensions, the effects of many factors such as temperature rise during propellant ground parking, lift of engine thrust, mass reduction of the tank structure, and extension of spacecraft in-orbit time are analyzed to demonstrate the comprehensive performance of liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen after densification. Meanwhile, the problem of subcooling combination matching of liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen is proposed... [more]

Keywords: IPSEpro software, parabolic trough collector, part-load conditions, performance analysis, solar thermal power plant
Power generation using concentrating solar energy is a potential solution to provide clean, green, and sustainable power generation in the long term. The objective of this paper is to analyze the performance of a parabolic trough collector-based concentrating solar power (CSP) plant by selecting four different reference days (i.e., 22 March, 22 June, 22 September, and 22 December), representing four seasons in Mongolian climate conditions. Numerical simulation of the 50 MW CSP plant was performed, both at nominal and part-load conditions using the heat balance method considering variations of power load owing to the direct normal irradiation (DNI). The results revealed that the 50 MW CSP plant could operate well throughout the year, and it showed the highest value of operating performance for the 22 June due to the higher DNI and small solar incidence angle. The operating performance for the 22 March and 22 September is nearly similar. The lowest value of operating performance occurred... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DAB converter, inductor integration, medium-frequency transformer, optimal design
For dual active bridge (DAB) converters, integrating the phase-shifting inductance (PSI) in the medium-frequency transformer (MFT) is an effective way to improve the overall power density. Different from the existing leakage-inductance-integrated (LII) structure, a concentric-winding (CW) enhanced leakage-inductance-integrated (ELII) structure, which includes an additional core, is proposed in this paper. In order to explain the operating mode of CW ELII MFT, a magnetic circuit model is established, and the analysis is carried out under the typical DAB excitation. The total leakage inductance of CW ELII MFT is divided into the winding leakage inductance and the additional leakage inductance for calculation. The integrated structure makes the heat dissipation of the MFT challenging. Therefore, the air−water combined cooling method is adopted in the design. A thermal resistance model is built for the winding air channel under forced convection. On this basis, MFT designs with different i... [more]
