Economic, Technological as Well as Environmental and Social Aspects of Local Use of Wood By-Products Generated in Sawmills for Energy Purposes
Katarzyna Mydlarz, Marek Wieruszewski
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: bioenergy, circular economy, economic, energy independence, environmental and social benefits, woody biomass
The article is the first in a series of works presenting the potential and possibilities of using for energy purposes wood waste and wood by-products generated at various stages of production in companies of the wood industry. The management of all wood waste and wood by-products is a pending issue due to the growing importance of the circular economy and broadly understood environmental protection. It is the environmental aspects and the climate targets defined by the EU that are the basis to determine the precise courses of action for the Member States and, as a result, also for companies. The article proves that regardless of the decisions taken by governments of individual countries in terms of broadly understood environmental protection, companies are free to implement pro-environmental solutions as part of their business activity. Due to the broad subject of the management of waste and by-products generated in different units of the wood industry, the possibilities of their use i... [more]
Greenhouse Gas Abatement in EUROPE—A Scenario-Based, Bottom-Up Analysis Showing the Effect of Deep Emission Mitigation on the European Energy System
Stephan Kigle, Michael Ebner, Andrej Guminski
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: decarbonization, electrification, energy system modelling, European energy system, European energy transition, final energy consumption, multi-energy system, Optimization, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, scenario analysis
Greenhouse gas emissions need to be drastically reduced to mitigate the environmental impacts caused by climate change, and to lead to a transformation of the European energy system. A model landscape consisting of four final energy consumption sector models with high spatial (NUTS-3) and temporal (hourly) resolution and the multi-energy system model ISAaR is extended and applied to investigate the transformation pathway of the European energy sector in the deep emission mitigation scenario solidEU. The solidEU scenario describes not only the techno-economic but also the socio-political contexts, and it includes the EU27 + UK, Norway, and Switzerland. The scenario analysis shows that volatile renewable energy sources (vRES) dominate the energy system in 2050. In addition, the share of flexible sector coupling technologies increases to balance electricity generation from vRES. Seasonal differences are balanced by hydrogen storage with a seasonal storage profile. The deployment rates of... [more]

Albara M. Mustafa, Abbas Barabadi
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cold climate regions, consequences, expert judgment, fuzzy logic, probabilities, risk analysis, wind farms
Different risks are associated with the operation and maintenance of wind farms in cold climate regions, mainly due to the harsh weather conditions that wind farms experience in that region such as the (i) increased stoppage rate of wind turbines due to harsh weather conditions, (ii) limited accessibility to wind farms due to snow cover on roads, and (iii) cold stress to workers at wind farms. In addition, there are risks that are caused by wind farms during their operation, which impact the surrounding environment and community such as the (iv) risk of ice throw from wind turbines, (v) environmental risks caused by the wind farms, and (vi) social opposition risk to installing wind farms in cold climate regions, such as the Arctic. The analysis of these six risks provides an overall view of the potential risks encountered by designers, operators, and decision makers at wind farms. This paper presents a methodology to quantify the aforementioned risks using fuzzy logic method. At first,... [more]
A Fuzzy Logic-Based Emulated Inertia Control to a Supercapacitor System to Improve Inertia in a Low Inertia Grid with Renewables
Ratnam Kamala Sarojini, Kaliannan Palanisamy, Enrico De Tuglie
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: emulated inertia control, frequency control, fuzzy logic, hardware-in-loop, inertia, supercapacitor
The contribution of power generation from converter-dominated renewable energy sources (RES) has increased enormously. Consequently, the system inertia is decreasing, and it impacts the frequency of the system. With large-scale integration of power electronic inverter-based power generation from RES, inertia from energy storage devices would be unavoidable in future power grids. In this paper, the inertia emulator is formed with a supercapacitor (IE−SC) to improve inertia in a low inertia grid. To emulate the inertia in a low inertia grid, this paper proposes a fuzzy logic controller-based emulated inertia controller (FL-EIC) for an inverter attached to IE−SC. The proposed fuzzy logic controller estimates the inertial power required based on the frequency deviation and rate of change of frequency (ROCOF). The output of the fuzzy controller adds to the conventional emulated inertia control (EIC) technique to alter the load angle for the power electronic inverter of IE−SC. Specifically,... [more]

Adam Jakubas, Ewa Łada-Tondyra, Marcin Makówka, Łukasz Suchecki
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: composites, electromagnetic radiation, EMI shielding, iron scale, waste materials
Electromagnetic radiation can have a negative effect on electronic circuits, for example, by disrupting their work and communication. Therefore, there is a need to reduce or eliminate electromagnetic interference using shields. This paper focuses on using waste materials in the form of iron scale, which is easy and inexpensive to obtain for shielding. Iron scale is the result of gaseous or aqueous corrosion, due to which a superficial layer of metal oxides formed on the surface of heated metal objects as a result of their contact with air or water during an industrial process is developed. In this study, morphology, chemical, and phase composition measurements were carried out. The results show that all the iron-based materials investigated are mainly composed of iron oxides and pure iron. The polymer−iron composites with different quantitative and qualitative compositions were prepared to verify the shielding effectiveness. The electrical resistance, impact strength, and magnetic prop... [more]

Krzysztof Barański, Jolanta Biegańska
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: firecrackers, manufacturing costs, pyrotechnic compositions
The article presents a comparison of the influence of price change of the components of pyrotechnic compositions producing an acoustic effect on their manufacturing costs. The analysis was based on the prices of raw materials in 1981 and 2021. The influence of price fluctuations of individual raw materials on the final cost of composites was determined. The impact of price changes on the profitability of pyrotechnic composition manufacturing was evaluated for the adopted models. The conducted economic analysis allowed for the determination of pyrotechnic compositions characterised by the lowest manufacturing costs, in terms of the unit cost, and for the assumed industrial models.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: adaptive step sliding, fast quantitative modelling, gas logging, infrared spectroscopy, partial least squares
Infrared spectroscopy (IR) quantitative analysis technology has shown excellent development potential in the field of oil and gas logging. However, due to the high overlap of the IR absorption peaks of alkane molecules and the offset of the absorption peaks in complex environments, the quantitative analysis of IR spectroscopy applied in the field puts forward higher requirements for modelling speed and accuracy. In this paper, a new type of fast IR spectroscopy quantitative analysis method based on adaptive step-sliding partial least squares (ASS-PLS) is designed. A sliding step control function is designed to change the position of the local PLS analysis model in the full spectrum band adaptively based on the relative change of the current root mean square error and the global minimum root-mean-square error for rapid modelling. The study in this paper reveals the influence of the position and width of the local modelling window on the performance, and how to quickly determine the opti... [more]
Thermal Management of Electrified Vehicles—A Review
Giorgio Previati, Giampiero Mastinu, Massimiliano Gobbi
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrified vehicle, thermal management, thermal modeling, thermal optimization
Vehicle electrification demands a deep analysis of the thermal problems in order to increase vehicle efficiency and battery life and performance. An efficient thermal management of an electrified vehicle has to involve every system of the vehicle. However, it is not sufficient to optimize the thermal behavior of each subsystem, but thermal management has to be considered at system level to optimize the global performance of the vehicle. The present paper provides an organic review of the current aspects of thermal management from a system engineering perspective. Starting from the definition of the requirements and targets of the thermal management system, each vehicle subsystem is analyzed and related to the whole system. In this framework, problems referring to modeling, simulation and optimization are considered and discussed. The current technological challenges and developments in thermal management are highlighted at vehicle and component levels.
Support Vector Quantile Regression for the Post-Processing of Meso-Scale Ensemble Prediction System Data in the Kanto Region: Solar Power Forecast Reducing Overestimation
Takahiro Takamatsu, Hideaki Ohtake, Takashi Oozeki
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ensemble prediction system, Machine Learning, numerical weather prediction, quantile regression, solar power forecast, support vector regression
Although the recent development of solar power forecasting through machine learning approaches, such as the machine learning models based on numerical weather prediction (NWP) data, has been remarkable, their extreme error requires an increase in the amount of reserve capacity procurement used for the power system safety. Hence, a reduction of the serious overestimation is necessary for efficient grid operation. However, despite the importance of the above issue, few studies have focused on the model design, suppressing serious errors, to the best of the authors’ knowledge. This study investigates a prediction model that can reduce the huge overestimation of the solar irradiance, which poses a risk to the power system. The specific approaches used are as follows: the employment of Support Vector Quantile Regression (SVQR), the utilization of Meso-scale Ensemble Prediction System (MEPS, Meso-scale EPS for the regions of Japan) data, which is based on the forecasts from Meso-scale Model... Piotr Wróblewski, Mariusz Niekurzak
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy-efficient construction, external partitions, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, thermal modernization
The aim of this work is to develop a model of heat supply to buildings with almost zero energy consumption, indicating the significant importance of heat losses and gains in heating installations. The prepared model is to indicate the need for changes in the structure and topology of heating installations, resulting from the changing heat demand of buildings. The need to create a new model is heightened by changes that relate to tightening legal regulations related to energy consumption and demand, which must meet the standards of buildings in Poland from 2021. The article presents the assumptions and results of analyses of the use of energy installations in residential buildings that use renewable energy sources to balance energy consumption in various areas of its use. To achieve this goal, calculations were made using simulations of the impact of the use of installations using renewable energy sources on the energy performance of a building with different quality of partitions and i... Building Thermal-Network Models: A Comparative Analysis, Recommendations, and Perspectives
Abhinandana Boodi, Karim Beddiar, Yassine Amirat, Mohamed Benbouzid
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building energy, building energy management system (BEMS), gray-box models, lumped-parameter models, smart building, system identification, thermal-network models
The development of smart buildings, as well as the great need for energy demand reduction, has renewed interest in building energy demand prediction. Intelligent controllers are a solution for optimizing building energy consumption while maintaining indoor comfort. The controller efficiency on the other hand, is mainly determined by the prediction of thermal behavior from building models. Due to the development complexity of the models, these intelligent controllers are not yet implemented on an industrial scale. There are primarily three types of building models studied in the literature: white-box, black-box, and gray-box. The gray-box models are found to be robust, efficient, of low cost computationally, and of moderate modeling complexity. Furthermore, there is no standard model configuration, development method, or operation conditions. These parameters have a significant influence on the model performance accuracy. This motivates the need for this review paper, in which we examin... [more]
Electricity Consumption and Economic Growth: Evidence from South Asian Countries
Sebastian Majewski, Urszula Mentel, Raufhon Salahodjaev, Marek Cierpiał-Wolan
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: economic growth, electricity consumption, South Asia
The purpose of this study is to shed light on the nexus between electricity supply and economic growth in South Asian countries during 1990−2018. The study employs Pedroni’s panel cointegration test as well as Dumitrescu and Hurlin’s (DH) causality test for panel data. The empirical results confirm a long-term relationship between electricity supply and economic growth. We fail to reject the non-causal relationship between electricity supply and economic growth for the panel, thereby affirming the neutrality hypothesis. Single country causality analysis reveals the growth hypothesis in the case of Pakistan. These results have a number of policy implications. For example, governments can introduce measures to improve energy efficiency in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka without fear of harming economic growth. The results for Pakistan may also imply that fostering green energy generation would lead to a positive effect on economic growth via improved electricity production. The governmen... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AVL ECXITE/CRUISE M, belt starter generator, MATLAB/Simulink, P0 mild hybrid power train, realistic driving conditions, simulations, vibration control
In order to meet the increasingly stricter emissions’ regulations, road vehicles require additional technologies aimed at the reduction of emissions from the internal combustion engine (ICE). A favorable solution from the standpoint of costs and simplicity of integration is a 48-V electrical architecture utilizing a low-voltage/high-power induction machine, which operates as the so-called engine belt starter generator (BSG) coupled via a timing belt with the ICE crankshaft within a P0 mild hybrid power train and used for starting up and boosting of the ICE power output, as well as for recuperating kinetic energy during vehicle deceleration. The aim of this work was to design a vibration damping system for the belt transmission within the so-called front end accessory drive (FEAD), which couples the BSG with the ICE crankshaft and to test the control system by means of simulations for realistic operating regimes of the P0 mild hybrid power train in order to show the functionality of the... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: low-carbon tourism, social network analysis, spatial network correlation, Super-SBM, tourism eco-efficiency
While tourism eco-efficiency has been analyzed actively within tourism research, there is an extant dearth of research on the spatial network structure of provincial-scale tourism eco-efficiency. The Super-SBM was used to evaluate the tourism eco-efficiency of 30 provinces (excluding Tibet, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan). Then, social network analysis was employed to examine the evolution characteristics regarding the spatial network structure of tourism eco-efficiency. The main results are shown as follows. Firstly, tourism eco-efficiency of more than two thirds’ provinces witnessed an increasing trend. Secondly, the spatial network structure of tourism eco-efficiency was still loose and unstable during the sample period. Thirdly, there existed the multidimensional nested and fused spatial factions and condensed subsets in the spatial network structure of tourism eco-efficiency. However, there was still a lack of low-carbon tourism cooperation among second or third sub-groups. These con... [more]
Implementation of the Improved Active Frequency Drift Anti-Islanding Method into the Three-Phase AC/DC Converter with the LCL Grid Filter
Krzysztof Dmitruk, Andrzej Sikorski
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active frequency drift, anti-islanding detection, energy quality, predictive control, renewable energy source, three-phase converter
The article presents a modified standard Active Frequency Drift (AFD) method used to detect unintentional island operation in converters generating electricity from renewable energy sources to the power grid. The primary aim of each of the island operation detection methods is the possibility of shortening the energising of a separate part of the power grid. The proposed method eliminates fragments of the reference current signal when it reaches a constant value for a particular time. This part of the signal is replaced with the hyperbolic sine function. It allows reducing the value of Total Harmonic Distortions (THD) while maintaining the same effectiveness of island operation detection. The article contains a detailed description of the newly proposed type of disturbance generation. The proposed solution is verified by conducting simulation and laboratory tests. The possibility of shortening the island operation detection time is proven by increasing the maximum distortion introduced... [more]

Charlotte Jarosch, Philipp Jahnke, Johannes Giehl, Jana Himmel
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy transition, flexibility, green hydrogen (H2), hydrogen-production costs, operation mode, power-to-gas, renewable energies
Green hydrogen produced by power-to-gas will play a major role in the defossilization of the energy system as it offers both carbon-neutral chemical energy and the chance to provide flexibility. This paper provides an extensive analysis of hydrogen production in decentralized energy systems, as well as possible operation modes (H2 generation or system flexibility). Modelling was realized for municipalities—the lowest administrative unit in Germany, thus providing high spatial resolution—in the linear optimization framework OEMOF. The results allowed for a detailed regional analysis of the specific operating modes and were analyzed using full-load hours, share of used negative residual load, installed capacity and levelized cost of hydrogen to derive the operation mode of power-to-gas to produce hydrogen. The results show that power-to-gas is mainly characterized by constant hydrogen production and rarely provides flexibility to the system. Main drivers of this dominant operation mode i... [more]

George Konstantinidis, Emmanuel Karapidakis, Alexandros Paspatis
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: chargers’ urban deployment plan, coordinating charging, distribution system, PEVs
Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) are rapidly increasing all over the world as electromobility is being promoted to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. PEVs locally produce zero emissions and they are more efficient in contrast to internal combustion engine vehicles. On the other hand, the impact of the uncoordinated charging of PEVs is expected to create new challenges for the established distribution grid. This article initially evaluates the impact of uncoordinated charging on the voltage regulation and transformer loading in the city of Heraklion, Greece. Then, a coordinated charging strategy is proposed to deal with the issue of transformer capacity violation by PEVs. Two cases were considered when the transformer overloading from PEV charging was taken into consideration: (a) keeping the transformer below its nominal capacity limit and (b) keeping the transformer below 90% of its nominal capacity limit. This was achieved by distributing the available capacity (nominal capac... [more]
Numerical Feasibility Study of Self-Regulating Radiant Ceiling in Combination with Diffuse Ceiling Ventilation
Marie Rugholm Krusaa, Christian Anker Hviid
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cooling, diffuse ventilation, energy saving, heating, radiant ceilings
A focus on indoor comfort and tightening targets for energy savings in buildings presents new opportunities for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning products (HVAC). This paper presents a novel comfort solution that integrates a suspended radiant ceiling with diffuse ventilation, dubbed HVACeiling. In combination with the concrete slab, the HVACeiling has the potential to provide thermal comfort with minimal temperature offset, which supports operation of the heating and cooling system at temperatures very close to the room comfort temperature. The paper presents a parametric numerical study of the concept in a simplified two-pipe layout with fixed flow and fixed temperatures. First, the analysis was focused on different internal and solar loads, heat losses, and climatic locations with the aim of assessing the potential of self-regulation, i.e., no active controls, thermal comfort, ability to reduce peak loads and the consequential building design considerations. Secondly, the p... [more]
Learning-Aided Optimal Power Flow Based Fast Total Transfer Capability Calculation
Ji’ang Liu, Youbo Liu, Gao Qiu, Xiao Shao
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, interior point method, surrogate assisted method, total transfer capability, transient stability
Total transfer capability (TTC) is a vital security indicator for power exchange among areas. It characterizes time-variants and transient stability dynamics, and thus is challenging to evaluate efficiently, which can jeopardize operational safety. A leaning-aided optimal power flow method is proposed to handle the above challenges. At the outset, deep learning (DL) is utilized to globally establish real-time transient stability estimators in parametric space, such that the dimensionality of dynamic simulators can be reduced. The computationally intensive transient stability constraints in TTC calculation and their sensitivities are therewith converted into fast forward and backward processes. The DL-aided constrained model is finally solved by nonlinear programming. The numerical results on the modified IEEE 39-bus system demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms several model-based methods in accuracy and efficiency.
Planning and Operational Aspects of Individual and Clustered Multi-Energy Microgrid Options

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decarbonisation, electricity market, energy vectors, microgrids, renewable energy sources, uncertainty
With the restructuring of the power system, household-level end users are becoming more prominent participants by integrating renewable energy sources and smart devices and becoming flexible prosumers. The use of microgrids is a way of aggregating local end users into a single entity and catering for the consumption needs of shareholders. Various microgrid architectures are the result of the local energy community following different decarbonisation strategies and are frequently not optimised in terms of size, technology or other influential factors for energy systems. This paper discusses the operational and planning aspects of three different microgrid setups, looking at them as individual market participants within a local electricity market. This kind of implementation enables mutual trade between microgrids without additional charges, where they can provide flexibility and balance for one another. The developed models take into account multiple uncertainties arising from photovolt... [more]
Experimental Investigation of the Heat Transfer between Finned Tubes and a Bubbling Fluidized Bed with Horizontal Sand Mass Flow
Stefan Thanheiser, Markus Haider, Paul Schwarzmayr
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bubbling fluidized bed, electro-thermal energy storage, finned tubes, fluidized bed heat exchanger, heat transfer, horizontal tubes, sandTES, thermal energy storage
The sandTES technology utilizes a fluidized bed counter current heat exchanger for thermal energy storage applications. Its main feature is an imposed horizontal flow of sand (SiO2) particles fluidized by a vertical air flow across a heat exchanger consisting of several horizontal rows of tubes. Past international research on heat transfer in dense fluidized beds has focused on stationary (stirred tank) systems, and there is little to no information available on the impact of longitudinal or helical fins. Previous pilot plant scale experiments at TU Wien led to the conclusion that the currently available correlations for predicting the heat transfer coefficient between the tube surface and the surrounding fluidized bed are insufficient for the horizontal sand flow imposed by the sandTES technology. Therefore, several smaller test rigs were designed in this study to investigate the influence of different tube arrangements and flow conditions on the external convective heat transfer coef... Keywords: energy management strategy, fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles, health conscious, Model Predictive Control, multi-objective optimization
The Energy Management Strategy (EMS) in Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FCHEVs) is the key part to enhance optimal power distribution. Indeed, the most recent works are focusing on optimizing hydrogen consumption, without taking into consideration the degradation of embedded energy sources. In order to overcome this lack of knowledge, this paper describes a new health-conscious EMS algorithm based on Model Predictive Control (MPC), which aims to minimize the battery degradation to extend its lifetime. In this proposed algorithm, the health-conscious EMS is normalized in order to address its multi-objective optimization. Then, weighting factors are assigned in the objective function to minimize the selected criteria. Compared to most EMSs based on optimization techniques, this proposed approach does not require any information about the speed profile, which allows it to be used for real-time control of FCHEV. The achieved simulation results show that the proposed approach reduces th... [more]
Assessing Responsive Building Envelope Designs through Robustness-Based Multi-Criteria Decision Making in Zero-Emission Buildings

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building envelope, decision making, multi-criteria assessment, responsive, robust designs, uncertainty scenarios, zero-emission buildings
Responsive building envelopes (RBEs) are central to developing sustainability strategies for zero emission/energy buildings (ZEBs). RBEs are a large group of complex technologies and systems, which is why multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods are helpful to navigate sustainability assessments considering various performance indicators. This article first provides a literature review of assessment criteria and key performance indicators for RBEs and an analysis of existing robustness-based MCDM methods. Then, a methodological approach to assess RBE designs in ZEB projects is proposed as an extension of a novel robustness-based MCDM method that normalizes the objective functions according to defined targets and combines them into one comprehensive indicator (MT-KPI), thereby eliminating the need to weight objectives. The proposed methodological approach is finally tested on a case study of a Norwegian ZEB, where five competitive RBE designs (including building integrated photovol... [more]

Keywords: crystalline rock, discrete fracture network, faulted basement, flow properties, fracture network properties, geothermal reservoirs, heat storage reservoirs, structural analogues, Upper Rhine Graben
Fracture network is a crucial element to address in any model of the thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of a reservoir rock. This study aims to provide quantified datasets and a further understanding of the critical parameters of the fracture network pattern in crystalline rocks. In the Northern Upper Rhine Graben, such rock units are targeted for multiple energy applications, from deep geothermal heat extraction to heat storage. Eleven outcrops were investigated with a combined LiDAR and 2D profiles analysis to extract faults and fracture network geometrical parameters, including length distribution, orientation, connectivity, and topology. These properties are used to decipher the structural architecture and estimate the flow properties of crystalline units. Fracture networks show a multi-scale power-law behaviour for length distribution. Fracture topology and orientation are mainly driven by both fault networks and lithology. Fracture apertures and permeability tensors were then calc... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: LLC converter, matrix transformers, three-phase Y–Y LLC
This study presents the topology of a three-phase LLC resonant converter with matrix transformers. The three-phase LLC resonant converter has the advantages of conventional LLC resonant converters, including zero-voltage switching at the primary side, zero-current switching at the secondary side, high-frequency feasibility, and high efficiency. Moreover, it has additional advantages that differ from conventional LLC, including low output capacitor current ripple, natural current sharing in three resonant currents, and a high power level. As a result of the above mentioned characteristics, LLC topology has been used in many electric vehicle charging systems, server power systems, and other high-power applications. However, as the power level becomes higher and higher, the input voltage is usually too high to reduce conduction loss, and the output current also increases. This situation makes transformer design more difficult. The increasing current means more core and copper loss, and th... [more]
