An Analysis of a Storage System for a Wind Farm with Ramp-Rate Limitation
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Storage, Markov chain, power ramping, power wind variability, revenue process
This paper provides evidence on how the variability of the power produced by a wind farm and its revenue are affected by implementing a ramp-rate limitation strategy and by adding a storage device to the system. The wind farm receives penalties whenever the ramp-rate limitations are not respected and may be supported by batteries to avoid this scenario. In this paper, we model the battery usage as a discrete time homogeneous Markov chain with rewards thanks to which it is possible to simulate the state of the charge of the battery and to calculate the amount of penalties suffered by the wind farm during any period. An application is performed considering the power produced by a hypothetical wind turbine located in Sardinia (Italy) using real wind speed data and electricity prices from a period of 10 years. We applied the concept of ramp-rate limitation on our hourly dataset, studying several limitation scenarios and battery capacities.

Flexibility Control in Autonomous Demand Response by Optimal Power Tracking
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: autonomous optimization, demand response, Energy Storage, power tracking, real-time pricing
In the regime of incentive-based autonomous demand response, time dependent prices are typically used to serve as signals from a system operator to consumers. However, this approach has been shown to be problematic from various perspectives. We clarify these shortcomings in a geometric way and thereby motivate the use of power signals instead of price signals. The main contribution of this paper consists of demonstrating in a standard setting that power tracking signals can control flexibilities more efficiently than real-time price signals. For comparison by simulation, German renewable energy production and German standard load profiles are used for daily production and demand profiles, respectively. As for flexibility, an energy storage system with realistic efficiencies is considered. Most critically, the new approach is able to induce consumptions on the demand side that real-time pricing is unable to induce. Moreover, the pricing approach is outperformed with regards to imbalance... [more]

Methodological Proposal for the Assessment Potential of Pumped Hydropower Energy Storage: Case of Gran Canaria Island
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: dam, Energy Storage, environmental constraints, Gran Canaria, Optimization, potential assessment, pumped hydropower energy storage (PHES), ravine basin, renewable energy sources (RES)
The pumped hydropower energy storage (PHES) assessments carried out so far have been focused on large water bodies obtained from global or restricted-use databases, or, on the other hand, on the application of methodologies to specific areas focusing on the detection of dams. In addition, many assessments do not include data optimization, or include it at the end of the process and are subject to the prior application of restrictions, often stipulated with subjective criteria. The aim of this article is to design a universal and easily applicable methodology for the assessment of viable PHES potential, which provides immediate and reliable results to assist in the energy planning of a given territory. It is classified in ravine basins, including an optimization before using the restrictions. The island of Gran Canaria is taken as the territory of application, whose density of dams is the highest in the world and whose share of hydroelectric energy is, at present, null; besides, no PHES... Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: 100%RES, Energy Storage, EVs, isolated power grids, RO seawater desalination, sector-coupling, transport decarbonization, V2G
Facilitating high-RES (Renewable Energy Resources) penetration via integrated resource management is considered a promising strategy on different islands worldwide. For this work, the Portuguese island of Porto Santo is established as a test bench using actual data from the island. Given its geographical condition and energy needs, integrating the management of different resources (namely, the electric power grid with the water supply system, intensive in-land transportation electrification, and the energy storage applications) is analyzed by this work to achieve a power grid relying entirely on RES. The energy storage utilization and the purposeful manipulations in demand patterns have been perceived as instruments to reduce RES availability and consumption mismatch. Electric Vehicles (EV) could be perceived as a reliable alternative to centralized storage systems, acting either as a load or power resource (generator), providing the required flexibility for power systems to uptake the... Sizing and Management of Energy Storage Systems in Large-Scale Power Plants Using Price Control and Artificial Intelligence
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: arbitrage, Batteries, day-ahead market, Energy Storage, particle swarm optimisation, power system management, supply and demand
Energy storage systems are expected to play a fundamental part in the integration of increasing renewable energy sources into the electric system. They are already used in power plants for different purposes, such as absorbing the effect of intermittent energy sources or providing ancillary services. For this reason, it is imperative to research managing and sizing methods that make power plants with storage viable and profitable projects. In this paper, a managing method is presented, where particle swarm optimisation is used to reach maximum profits. This method is compared to expert systems, proving that the former achieves better results, while respecting similar rules. The paper further presents a sizing method which uses the previous one to make the power plant as profitable as possible. Finally, both methods are tested through simulations to show their potential.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: carbonation–calcination, dispatchability, Energy Storage, heat to power, solids cycles
The cyclic carbonation-calcination of CaCO3 in fluidized bed reactors not only offers a possibility for CO2 capture but can at the same time be implemented for thermochemical energy storage (TCES), a feature which will play an important role in a future that has an increasing share of non-dispatchable variable electricity generation (e.g., from wind and solar power). This paper provides a techno-economic assessment of an industrial-scale calcium looping (CaL) process with simultaneous TCES and CO2 capture. The process is assumed to make profit by selling dispatchable electricity and by providing CO2 capture services to a certain nearby emitter (i.e., transport and storage of CO2 are not accounted). Thus, the process is connected to two other facilities located nearby: a renewable non-dispatchable energy source that charges the storage and a plant from which the CO2 in its flue gas flow is captured while discharging the storage and producing dispatchable electricity. The current work presents a computationally cost-effective numerical model that successfully simulates a heat pump water heater (HPWH) under typical working conditions of dwellings. The model’s main components are a stratified tank and the heat-pump unit. Both systems are coupled, since a good prediction of water temperature is needed to accurately predict the heat-pump performance. Ten thermocouples measured the tank wall temperature. Measurements and simulations were performed under challenging conditions of a heavy stratification. The 190 L tank stratification was successfully modeled employing a 1D model, experimentally adjusted by three tapping cycles, with 6 × 22, 6 × 33, and 3 × 33 L consumptions, covering flowrates of 4 and 6 L/min. Water temperature is obtained with an uncertainty of 2.6 °C while the heat-pump was ON. Assessing the Effectiveness of the Energy Storage Rule-Based Control in Reducing the Power Flow Uncertainties Caused by Distributed Photovoltaic Systems
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Energy Storage, net power flows, photovoltaic, rule-based control, uncertainty
Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are increasingly adopted to mitigate the negative effects caused by the intermittent generation of photovoltaic (PV) systems. The majority of commercial BESSs implement the self-consumption, rule-based approach, which aims at storing the excess of PV production, and then reusing it when the power demand of the loads exceeds the PV power generation. Even though this approach proved to be a valid solution to increase the self-consumption of distributed generators, its ability to reduce the power flow uncertainties caused by PV systems is still debatable. To fill this gap, this study aims at answering this question by proposing a dedicated set of key performance indicators (KPIs). These KPIs are used to evaluate the performance of a 13.8 kWp/25.2 kWh Lithium-Ion BESS coupled with a 64 kWp PV system. The results of the study revealed that the impact of the storage system had almost negligible effects on the uncertainty of the net power flows, while sh... [more]

The calcium looping (CaL) process, which exploits the reversible calcination of calcium carbonate, has been proposed as a solution to the challenges facing deployment of concentrated solar power (CSP). As an extension of the work undertaken to date, this project proposes a novel configuration of the CSP-CaL process which may offer advantages over other proposed configurations, including a reduction in process equipment requirements, elimination of pressure differentials between vessels, and a reduction in compression duty during the energy discharge period. The results obtained through process simulation indicate that the proposed process can achieve round-trip efficiencies in the range of 32−46% and energy storage densities in the range of 0.3−1.0 GJ/m3. These parameters are strongly dependent on the residual conversion of the CaO sorbent as well as the efficiency of the power cycles used to remove heat on the carbonator side of the process.
