A Novel Method to Detoxify Steam-Exploded Biomass and Produce a Substrate for Biorefinery
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, detoxification, Fermentation, fluid bed, inhibitors, steam explosion
Pre-treatments at relatively high temperatures (range 160 °C−220 °C) are currently used to transform lignocellulosics into biofuels and chemicals. In this step, several molecules with an inhibitory effect in the subsequent fermentation processes are generated. These inhibitors include low-molecular-weight molecules and lignin fragments that can be removed by water washing. However, this procedure also removes valuable soluble carbohydrates which are then difficult to recover from the diluted stream. In this work, a new method to detoxify steam-exploded substrates is reported. The procedure is based on the evaporation of low-weight acids and aldehydes, which leaves all the sugars in the solid matrix, while the cellulose hornification (an irreversible modification of the cellulose fibres that depresses the saccharification yield) is prevented by adding steam to the hot fluidizing flow stream. Two systems were tested: a 0.1 kg/batch oscillating fluidized bed and a continuous fluidized bed... [more]

Enhancement of Digestion Resistance and Glycemic Control of Corn Starch through Conjugation with Gallic Acid and Quercetin Using the Free Radical Grafting Method
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: corn starch, gallic acid, glycemic control, interaction, quercetin, starch digestibility
The objective of this study was to synthesize different polyphenol−corn starch complexes including gallic acid−starch and quercetin−starch by conjugating corn starch with gallic acid and quercetin using the free radical grafting method. This process was effective in enhancing conjugations of starch molecules with gallic acid and quercetin (5.20 and 5.83 mg GAE/g, respectively) and imparted promising antioxidant capacity to the phenolic−starch complexes. Significant interactions between these phenolic compounds and corn starch molecules were revealed with an ultraperformance liquid chromatography electrospray ionization Q-time-of-flight mass spectrometry assay. It was revealed that significantly higher levels of resistant starch in the above gallic−starch and quercetin−starch complex samples (11.6 and 15.3 g/100 g, respectively) together with an obvious reduction in glycemic response (7.9% and 11.8%, respectively) observed over the control. Complex samples functionalized with gallic aci... [more]

Advanced Exergy Analysis of an Absorption Chiller/Kalina Cycle Integrated System for Low-Grade Waste Heat Recovery
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: advanced exergy analysis, cascade utilization, exergy analysis, power generation, waste heat recovery
Exergy analysis and advanced exergy analysis of an absorption chiller/Kalina cycle integrated system are conducted in this research. The exergy destruction of each component and overall exergy efficiency of the cascade process have been obtained. Advanced exergy analysis investigates the interactions among different components and the actual improvement potential. Results show that among all the equipment, the largest exergy destruction is in the generators and absorber. System exergy efficiency is obtained as 35.52%. Advanced analysis results show that the endogenous exergy destruction is dominant in each component. Interconnections among different components are not significant but very complicated. It is suggested that the improvement priority should be given to the turbine. Performance improvement of this low-grade waste heat recovery process is still necessary because around 1/4 of the total exergy destruction can be avoided. Exergy and advanced exergy analysis in this work locate... [more]

Characterization of Oxidation-Reduction Potential Variations in Biological Wastewater Treatment Processes: A Study from Mechanism to Application
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: oxidation-reduction potential, principal component analysis, process control, process monitoring, wastewater treatment
Oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) sensors would constitute a robust surveillance and control solution for aeration and external carbon dosing in wastewater biological treatment processes if a clear correlation exists between the ORP values and process variables (e.g., dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate, and chemical oxygen demand (COD). In this study, ORP values and other water quality variables were analyzed, and principal component analysis (PCA) and analysis of variance were used to study the relationships between ORP and main reactive substances under anoxic conditions. Mathematical models were then established using multiple regression analysis. The results showed that under anoxic conditions, ORP was positively correlated with nitrate, DO, and COD and negatively correlated with ammonia nitrogen, phosphate, and pH. COD had a low correlation with the ORP value change. PCA showed that the mathematical model of ORP can be established by using DO, nitrate, and phosphate, for which the a... [more]

Wear and Lubrication Performance of Different Reticular-Textured TiN-Coated Surfaces under Lubricated Conditions
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: fluid lubrication, reticular surface texture, TiN coatings, tribology performance, wear and friction, wear and lubrication
Texture and coating technology can significantly improve the tribological properties of mechanical components. In this study, the lubricating and wear properties of the reticular surface texture under the action of TiN were studied. Lubrication and wear experiments at different speeds were conducted using a UMT-3 wear and friction testing machine. Using Fluent fluid simulation, the bearing capacity of the oil film was obtained, and the lubrication performance of the texture was verified. The results showed that the simulation experiment and the lubrication experiment were consistent to a certain extent. For the groove width and angle parameters studied in this paper, optimal parameters existed to achieve the maximum bearing capacity, 1.27 N. Due to the high hardness and low elastic modulus of the TiN coating, the coated reticular texture was more wear-resistant, and it achieved the minimum wear volume 1.148 × 10−6 mm3 from the grinding stainless-steel matrix. Improved Remora Optimization Algorithm with Mutualistic Strategy for Solving Constrained Engineering Optimization Problems
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: mutualistic strategy, remora optimization algorithm, roulette wheel selection, sailfish optimization algorithm, swarm intelligence optimization algorithm, tent chaotic mapping, whale optimization algorithm
Recently, a new swarm intelligence optimization algorithm called the remora optimization algorithm (ROA) was proposed. ROA simulates the remora’s behavior of the adsorption host and uses some formulas of the sailfish optimization (SFO) algorithm and whale optimization algorithm (WOA) to update the solutions. However, the performance of ROA is still unsatisfactory. When solving complex problems, ROA’s convergence ability requires further improvement. Moreover, it is easy to fall into local optimization. Since the remora depends on the host to obtain food and optimize ROA performance, this paper introduces the mutualistic strategy to strengthen the symbiotic relationship between the remora and the host. Meanwhile, chaotic tent mapping and roulette wheel selection are added to further improve the algorithm’s performance. By incorporating the above improvements, this paper proposes an improved remora optimization algorithm with a mutualistic strategy (IROA) and uses 23 benchmark functions... [more]

Numerical Investigation of Fracture Morphology Characteristics in Heterogeneous Reservoirs
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bifurcation, gravels, heterogeneity, hydraulic fracture, weak interface
Highly heterogeneous glutenite reservoirs with large amounts of gravel and weak interfaces pose a great challenge to predicting the trajectory of hydraulic fractures during the fracturing process. Based on the phase field method, a fully coupled numerical model of hydraulic fracturing is established. This paper is devoted to investigating the variation in the overall expansion pattern of hydraulic fractures in reservoirs considering randomly distributed gravel and weak interfaces. The numerical results demonstrate that the existence of gravel and a weak interface could alter the extending paths of the hydraulic fractures as well as the value of critical bifurcation injection rate. As the fracture energy of the weak interface is large enough, the hydraulic fracture tends to cross the gravel and the weak interface between the rock matrix and the gravel, forming a planar fracture. Deflection and branching of the hydraulic fracture are more likely to occur in reservoirs containing large gr... [more]

Which Is an Appropriate Quadratic Rheological Model of Fresh Paste, the Modified Bingham Model or the Parabolic Model?
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cementitious materials, fresh paste, modified Bingham model, parabolic model, rheological parameter, the Couette inverse problem
The physical meaning and calculating process of the rheological parameters of two nonlinear rheological models, the parabolic model and the modified Bingham model, were compared. The fluidity test and a rheological experiment on cementitious materials were performed. The Couette inverse problem is a key issue in measuring and solving the rheological parameters of fresh cementitious materials. The solution of the Couette inverse problem based on the modified Bingham model is discontinuous when the coefficient of the quadratic term is equal to zero, resulting in a large deviation between the fitting curve and the rheological experimental data. The credibility of the rheological parameters of the pastes calculated based on the modified Bingham model is low. The formulas for calculating yield stress, fiducial differential viscosity and the degree of shear thickening or shear thinning of the parabolic model have been developed. The credibility of the rheological parameters of the pastes cal... [more]

Finite Element and Neural Network Models to Forecast Gas Well Inflow Performance of Shale Reservoirs
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: finite element, gas, Langmuir, neural, shale
Shale gas reservoirs are one of the most rapidly growing forms of natural gas worldwide. Gas production from such reservoirs is possible by using extensive and deep well fracturing to contact bulky fractions of the shale formation. In addition, the main mechanisms of the shale gas production process are the gas desorption that takes place by diffusion of gas in the shale matrix and by Darcy’s type through the fractures. This study presents a finite element model to simulate the gas flow including desorption and diffusion in shale gas reservoirs. A finite element model is used incorporated with a quadrilateral element mesh for gas pressure solution. In the presented model, the absorbed gas content is described by Langmuir’s isotherm equation. The non-linear iterative method is incorporated with the finite element technique to solve for gas property changes and pressure distribution. The model is verified against an analytical solution for methane depletion and the results show the robus... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: controlled drug release, diffusion, lag time, Monte Carlo simulations, multilayers, reservoir systems
Theoretical considerations along with extensive Monte Carlo simulations are used to calculate the lag time before the initiation of diffusion-controlled drug release in multilayer planar devices with an outer layer containing no drug. The presented results are also relevant in formulations coated by a drug-free membrane as well as in other reservoir systems. The diffusion of drug molecules through the outer layer towards the release medium is considered, giving rise to the observed lag time. We have determined the dependence of lag time on the thickness and the diffusion coefficient of the drug-free outer layer, as well as on the initial drug concentration and the surface area of the planar device. A simple expression, obtained through an analytical solution of diffusion equation, provides an approximate estimate for the lag time that describes the numerical results reasonably well; according to this relation, the lag time is proportional to the squared thickness of the outer layer ove... Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: dual water, Machine Learning, neural network, permeability, weight curves, well logging
The estimation of the formation permeability is considered a vital process in assessing reservoir deliverability. The prediction of such a rock property with the use of the minimum number of inputs is mandatory. In general, porosity and permeability are independent rock petrophysical properties. Despite these observations, theoretical relationships have been proposed, such as that by the Kozeny−Carmen theory. Hence, this study proposes a comprehensive ANN model based on the back propagation learning algorithm using the FORTRAN language to predict the formation permeability from available well logs. The proposed ANN model uses a weight visualization curve technique to optimize the number of hidden neurons and layers. Approximately 500 core data points were collected to generate the model. February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: legume protein, protein extraction, techno-functional and nutritional properties of protein isolates
Legumes are sustainable protein-rich crops with numerous industrial food applications, which give them the potential of a functional food ingredient. Legume proteins have appreciable techno-functional properties (e.g., emulsification, foaming, water absorption), which could be affected along with its digestibility during processing. Extraction and isolation of legumes’ protein content makes their use more efficient; however, exposure to the conditions of further use (such as temperature and pressure) results in, and significantly increases, changes in the structural, and therefore functional and nutritional, properties. The present review focuses on the quality of legume protein concentrates and their changes under the influence of different physical processing treatments and highlights the effect of processing techniques on the structural, functional, and some of the nutritional, properties of legume proteins.
