A Sustainable Supply Chain Integrated with Autonomated Inspection, Flexible Eco-Production, and Smart Transportation
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: autonomated inspection, investment management, single-setup-multi-delivery, Sustainability, variable production rate
The present study focuses on supply chain management to improve its sustainability from economic, environmental, and social perspectives. First, improving production process reliability and cost reduction are two main factors for enhancing economic sustainability. Hence, we introduced autonomated inspection and invested in ordering and setup costs. Second, reducing the carbon footprint in supply chains is the main pillar of their environmental stewardship, which is addressed by an eco-friendly and flexible production system in this study. Finally, an advanced single-setup-multi-delivery (SSMD) strategy is utilized to improve social aspects associated with human labor increase. For practicality, demand is considered as the selling price and is quality dependent. The sustainability enhancement is transformed as a term of profit; therefore, our model maximizes the total profit of the supply chain by optimizing a manufacturer’s and retailer’s decision variables. In Situ DRIFTS Study of Single-Atom, 2D, and 3D Pt on γ-Al2O3 Nanoflakes and Nanowires for C2H4 Oxidation
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: C2H4 oxidation, in situ DRIFTS, size effects, supported Pt catalysts, surface reaction mechanism
Up to now, a great number of catalysts have been reported that are active in the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, supported noble-metal catalysts (especially Pt-based catalysts) are still the most excellent ones for this reaction. In this study, Pt species supported on γ-Al2O3 and ranging from single-atom sites to clusters (less than 1 nm) and 1−2 nm nanoparticles were prepared and investigated for oxidizing C2H4. The Pt-loaded γ-Al2O3 nanoflakes (PtAl-NF) and Pt-loaded γ-Al2O3 nanowires (PtAl-NW) were successfully prepared. The samples were characterized using XRD, TEM, XPS, HAADF-STEM, and in situ DRIFTS. Based on in situ DRIFTS, a simple surface reaction mechanism was developed. The stable intermediates CO on single-atom Pt, subnanometer Pt particles, and fully exposed Pt clusters could be explained by the strong binding of CO molecule poisoning Pt sites. Moreover, the oxidation of C2H4 was best achieved by Pt particles that were 1−2 nm in size and the cataly... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: discrete heat sources, natural convection, numerical simulation, open-ended square channel
Passive heat dissipation cooling technologies based on natural convection in open channels can effectively control the maximum temperature and improve the temperature homogeneity of 5G base stations, data centers and other equipment. In this paper, the flow and heat transfer of natural convection in an open-ended square channel with two suspending heat sources are studied through numerical simulation. The distributions of the temperature field and flow field in the channel with different horizontal distances and vertical altitude differenced of the heat sources are acquired via the finite element method (FEM)-based COMSOL Multiphysics. The changes in local temperature and the local Nusselt number are obtained. The relationships between the temperature field, flow field, and Nusselt number with respect to the geometric parameters of the heat sources are discussed. With different geometric parameters of the two suspending heat sources, the average surface temperature at the bottom is alw... [more]

Failure Analysis of Drill Pipe during Working Process in a Deep Well: A Case Study
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: deep well, drill pipe failure, friction, gravel sedimentation, metal phase transition
The failure of a 101.6 mm drill pipe was studied by combining experimental testing and finite element simulation. The macro analysis, metallographic structure and energy spectrum, chemical composition and a mechanical property test of the failed drill pipe sample were firstly carried out. Then, a three-dimensional finite element model of drill pipe failure was established based on the experimental results. Finally, the failure mechanism of drill pipe was analyzed and the mitigation measures were put forward. The results showed that solids settling sticking was the direct cause of fracture failure of the drill pipe joint. Due to the violent friction and wear between the drill pipe joint and the settled sand, the large amount of heat generated caused the microstructure of the joint material to undergo phase transformation and the bearing capacity to be reduced. Finally, fracture occurs under tensile and torsional loads.

Incorporating Machine Learning in Computer-Aided Molecular Design for Fragrance Molecules
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: cheminformatics, computer-aided molecular design, fragrance molecules, Machine Learning, Optimization, rough sets
The demand for new novel flavour and fragrance (F&F) molecules has boosted the need for a systematic approach to designing fragrance molecules. However, the F&F-related industry still relies heavily on experimental approaches or on existing databases without considering the consequences resulting from changes in concentration, which could omit potential fragrances. Computer-aided molecular design (CAMD) has great potential to identify novel molecular structures to be used as fragrances. Using CAMD for this purpose requires models to predict the olfaction properties of molecules. A rough set-based machine learning (RSML) approach is used to develop an interpretable predictive model for odour characteristics in this work. New rule-based models are generated from RSML based on the dilution and a number of different topological indices which identify the structure-odour relationship of fragrance molecules. The most prominent rules are selected and formulated as constraints in a CAMD optimi... [more]

Subject: System Identification
Keywords: boundary and distributed control, data-driven engineering, differential flatness, neural ordinary differential equations, parameter sensitivities, partial differential equations, physics-informed neural networks, process systems engineering, system identification, systems theory
Industry 4.0 has embraced process models in recent years, and the use of model-based digital twins has become even more critical in process systems engineering, monitoring, and control. However, the reliability of these models depends on the model parameters available. The accuracy of the estimated parameters is, in turn, determined by the amount and quality of the measurement data and the algorithm used for parameter identification. For the definition of the parameter identification problem, the ordinary least squares framework is still state-of-the-art in the literature, and better parameter estimates are only possible with additional data. In this work, we present an alternative strategy to identify model parameters by incorporating differential flatness for model inversion and neural ordinary differential equations for surrogate modeling. The novel concept results in an input-least-squares-based parameter identification problem with significant parameter sensitivity changes. To stu... [more]

Multi-Resource Computing Offload Strategy for Energy Consumption Optimization in Mobile Edge Computing
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: computing offload, energy optimization, mobile edge computing, multiple resources, workflow scheduling
The energy consumption optimization of edge devices in the mobile edge computing environment is mainly based on computational offload strategy. Most of the current common computing offload strategies only consider a single computing resource and do not comprehensively consider different kinds of computing resources in mobile edge computing environments, which cannot fully reduce the energy consumption of edge devices under the condition of ensuring response time constraints. To solve this problem, a multi-resource computing unloading energy consumption model is proposed in the mobile edge computing environment, and a new fitness calculation method for evaluating the energy consumption of edge devices is designed. Combined with the workflow management system, a multi-resource computing offloading particle swarm optimization task scheduling algorithm for energy consumption optimization in mobile edge computing is proposed. Bifurcation and Stability Analysis of a Bolted Joint Rotor System Contains Multi-Discs Subjected to Rub-Impact Effect
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bifurcation, multi-discs, rotor system, rub-impact, stability analysis
In aero-engines, the rotor systems are frequently designed with multistage discs, in which the discs are fastened together through bolted joints. During operation, rotating machines are susceptible to rotor−stator rubbing faults. Those bolted joints are subjected to friction and impact forces during a rubbing event, leading to a dramatic change in mechanical properties at the contacting interfaces, influencing the rotor dynamics, which have attracted the attention of scholars. In the present work, a mathematical model, which considers the unbalance force, rotor dimensional properties, nonlinear oil-film force and rub-impact effect, is developed to study the bifurcation and stability characteristics of the bolted joint rotor system containing multi-discs subjected to the rub-impact effect. The time-domain waveforms of the system are obtained numerically by using the Runge−Kutta method, and a bifurcation diagram, time domain waveforms, spectrum plots, shaft orbits and Poincaré maps are a... Hydrogen-Enriched Compressed Natural Gas Network Simulation for Consuming Green Hydrogen Considering the Hydrogen Diffusion Process
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: convection–diffusion equation, dynamic simulation, hydrogen concentration, hydrogen-enriched compressed natural gas (HCNG), natural gas network, renewable energy hydrogen production, scenario analysis
Transporting green hydrogen by existing natural gas networks has become a practical means to accommodate curtailed wind and solar power. Restricted by pipe materials and pressure levels, there is an upper limit on the hydrogen blending ratio of hydrogen-enriched compressed natural gas (HCNG) that can be transported by natural gas pipelines, which affects whether the natural gas network can supply energy safely and reliably. To this end, this paper investigates the effects of the intermittent and fluctuating green hydrogen produced by different types of renewable energy on the dynamic distribution of hydrogen concentration after it is blended into natural gas pipelines. Based on the isothermal steady-state simulation results of the natural gas network, two convection−diffusion models for the dynamic simulation of hydrogen injections are proposed. Finally, the dynamic changes of hydrogen concentration in the pipelines under scenarios of multiple green hydrogen types and multiple injectio... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: crank mechanism, description of motion, mathematical coordinates
This article offers a general approach to studying a four-bar mechanism from a geometric viewpoint. The four-bar mechanism form is used in a large number of existing pieces of machinery and equipment. This type of mechanism, used to drive a screen and generate its oscillating motion, is referred to in this article for its application in separation systems. In the literature, there are numerous approaches for analyzing such a mechanism. In addition to determining this mechanism’s geometry, an examination of the influence of the drive system’s position on the motion of the tie rods, or the support system of an oscillating site, is also conducted. In the investigation, the connecting rod angle was adjusted between −45 degrees and 60 degrees without respect to the horizontal. The following parameters, which correspond to the operation of the oscillating sieve motion, were obtained from the determined mathematical relations: the movement made by the free end of the tie rod; the tie rod’s an... Continuous Systems Bioremediation of Wastewaters Loaded with Heavy Metals Using Microorganisms
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: bioreactor studies, bioremediation, heavy metals, microorganisms, wastewater treatment
Heavy metal pollution is a serious concern of the modern era due to its widespread negative effects on human health and to the environment. Conventional technologies applied for the uptake of this category of persistent pollutants are complex, often expensive, and inefficient at low metal concentrations. In the last few years, non-conventional alternatives have been studied in search of better solutions in terms of costs and sustainability. Microbial adsorbents are one of the biomass-based sorbents that have extensively demonstrated excellent heavy metals removal capacity even at low concentrations. However, most of the carried-out research regarding their application in wastewater treatment has been performed in discontinuous systems. The use of microorganisms for the uptake of metal ions in continuous systems could be an important step for the upscale of the remediation processes since it facilitates a faster remediation of higher quantities of wastewaters loaded with heavy metals, i... Subject: Materials
Keywords: agricultural waste, carbon sequestration, carbonaceous material, hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonisation, microwave heating
Hydrochars are an alternative form of biochar produced by hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC), a potentially cheaper and greener method. In this paper, the effect of multiple variables on hydrochar properties was investigated. Waste biomass was converted to hydrochar via microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonisation. The variables were temperature, solution ratio (water-biomass ratio), time, particle size, pH and acetone washing. The measured properties were yield, carbon, oxygen and ash content, higher heating value (HHV), carbon and energy recovery and dye and water adsorption. Feedstock significance was investigated using apple, wheat, barley, oat and pea straw. The investigation into this specific combination of variables and feedstock has not been done before. HTC increased carbon content (~60%), HHV (~24 MJ/kg) and water adsorption and reduced oxygen content and dye adsorption. Thermal analysis suggested hydrochars were not suitable for sequestration. February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: economic analysis, ethylene glycol, heat integration, process integration, process modeling
Monoethylene glycol (MEG) is used to produce polyester fibers and polyethylene terephthalate resins. It is also utilized in antifreeze, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics applications. In this research, we consider the development of a novel process plant that produces MEG from ethylene. The proposed ethylene-to-ethylene oxide (EO) plant is integrated with an EO-to-MEG plant to reduce utility costs and recover high-value products. Energy-saving opportunities are analyzed via heat integration tools. Furthermore, a multitube glycol reactor is used in conjunction with a novel MTO catalyst in the ethylene-to-EO reactor. Our results demonstrate that the integrated EO/EG plant produces ethylene glycols with that same purity and product recovery as conventional designs. A comparative economic assessment based on a 200,000 t/y plant indicates that process integration techniques can reduce costs significantly.
