Numerical Investigation on Injected-Fluid Recovery and Production Performance following Hydraulic Fracturing in Shale Oil Wells
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: complex fracture, flowback, numerical simulation, productivity, shale oil
Currently, volume fracturing of horizontal wells is the main technology for shale oil development. A large amount of fracturing fluid is injected into the formation, but the flowback efficiency is very low. Besides, the impact of fluid retention on productivity is not fully clear. There is still a debate about fast-back or slow-back after fracturing, and the formulation of a reasonable cleanup scheme is lacking a theoretical basis. To illustrate the injected-fluid recovery and production performance of shale oil wells, an integrated workflow involving a complex fracture model and oil-water production simulation was presented, enabling a confident history match of flowback data. Then, the impacts of pumping rate, slick water ratio, cluster spacing, stage spacing and flowback rate were quantitatively analyzed. The results show that the pumping rate is negatively correlated with injected-fluid recovery, but positively correlated with oil production. A high ratio of slick water would induc... [more]

Evaluation of the Zinc Sulfate Catalytic Effect in Empty Fruit Bunches Pyrolysis
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Biomass, catalyst, empty fruit bunches, kinetics, pyrolysis
The effect of zinc sulfate as a catalyst on the pyrolysis of empty fruit bunches (EFB) from oil palm was assessed. Thus, a thermo-gravimetric analyzer coupled with a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) was used, while the percentage of catalyst varied between 0 wt% and 3 wt% at different heating rates (10, 30, and 50 K/min). The kinetic parameters (activation energy, pre-exponential factor, and reaction order) and activation energy distribution were calculated using three kinetic models. The thermogravimetric curves for the EFB pyrolysis showed three prominent peaks in which the maximum mass loss rate was mainly due to cellulose and lignin pyrolysis. On the other hand, FTIR analysis indicated that the main gaseous products were CO2, CO, H2O, CH4, NH3, acids, and aldehydes (CH3COOH). The samples with 2 wt% of catalyst presented higher activation energies in pseudo reactions 1 and 2, ranging between 181,500 kJ/mol−184,000 kJ/mol and 165,200 kJ/mol−165,600 kJ/mol, respective... Screening of Phenolic Compounds in Rejected Avocado and Determination of Their Antioxidant Potential
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: antioxidant activity, avocado pulp, HPLC-PDA, LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS, polyphenols
Avocados are one of the important fruits in our diet, showing many health benefits. However, a significant amount of avocados become defective as they are transported throughout the supply chain and are refused by consumers, ending up at animal or pet feed manufacturers. Indeed, some previous evidence suggests that rejected avocados still present high phenolic content that can be reused in the drug or pharmacological industry. Therefore, in the present work, we measured the phenolic content from rejected avocado pulp and evaluated the antioxidant potential, followed by characterization and quantification using LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS and HPLC-PDA. Reed avocado pulp was highest in TPC (0.21 mg GAE/g f.w.) and TFC (0.05 mg QE/g f.w.), whereas in TCT assay, low traces of tannins were exhibited in Wurtz and Reed avocado pulp. Hass avocado pulp had the highest antioxidant potential in DPPH (0.32 AAE/g f.w.), FRAP (0.13 AAE/g f.w.), ABTS (0.32 AAE/g f.w.), •OH-RSA (0.51 AAE/g f.w.) and FICA (0.47... [more]

Lignite-Based N-Doped Porous Carbon as an Efficient Adsorbent for Phenol Adsorption
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: Adsorption, lignite, N-doping, phenol
The treatment of phenolic-containing wastewater has received increased attention in recent years. In this study, the N-doped porous carbons were prepared from lignite with tripolycyanamide as the N source, and their phenol adsorption behaviors were investigated. Results clearly showed that the addition of tripolycyanamide largely improved the surface area, micropore volume, N content and thus the phenol adsorption capacity of lignite-based carbons. The N-doped sample prepared at 700 °C showed a surface area of 1630 m2/g and a phenol adsorption capacity as high as 182.4 mg/g at 20 °C, which were 2.0 and 1.6 times that of the lignite-based carbon without N-doping. Pseudo-second order and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models could better explain the phenol adsorption behaviors over lignite-based N-doped porous carbon. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that phenol adsorption energies over graphitic-N (−72 kJ/mol) and pyrrolic-N (−74 kJ/mol) groups were slightly lower than that over th... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: event-triggered control (ETC), finite-time prescribed performance control, non-singular fast terminal sliding mode (NFTSM), Nussbaum gain function, self-recurrent wavelet neural network (SRWNN), unknown control direction
To solve the trajectory tracking control problem for a class of nonlinear systems with time-varying parameter uncertainties and unknown control directions, this paper proposed a neural sliding mode control strategy with prescribed performance against event-triggered disturbance. First, an enhanced finite-time prescribed performance function and a compensation term containing the Hyperbolic Tangent function are introduced to design a non-singular fast terminal sliding mode (NFTSM) surface to eliminate the singularity in the terminal sliding mode control and speed up the convergence in the balanced unit-loop neighborhood. This sliding surface guarantees arbitrarily small overshoot and fast convergence speed even when triggering mistakes. Meanwhile, we utilize the Nussbaum gain function to solve the problem of unknown control directions and unknown time-varying parameters and design a self-recurrent wavelet neural network (SRWNN) to handle the uncertainty terms in the system. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coupling model, critical sulfur carrying velocity, numerical simulation, sour-gas well, sulfur deposition
Sulfur deposition has an important effect on the productivity of sour-gas wells. Accurately predicting the occurrence of sulfur deposition and the location and amount of sulfur deposition in wellbore can effectively guide the production of gas wells. In this paper, the wellbore sulfur deposition model, pressure model, and transient temperature model are established for various well types. Then, numerical simulations of sulfur deposition in the sour-gas well were conducted by coupling these models. Examples show that the proposed methodology has high accuracy, and the average relative error of the calculated results is 3.61%. Based on the model, a sensitivity analysis was performed on the factors affecting sulfur deposition. The results show that with the increase of wellbore inclination angle, the critical sulfur carrying velocity first increased and then decreased, and the maximum critical velocity is about 30% larger than that of the vertical section. The amount of wellbore sulfur de... [more]

Sleep Apnoea (SA) is a common chronic illness that affects nearly 1 billion people around the world, and the number of patients is rising. SA causes a wide range of psychological and physiological ailments that have detrimental effects on a patient’s wellbeing. The high prevalence and negative health effects make SA a public health problem. Whilst the current gold standard diagnostic procedure, polysomnography (PSG), is reliable, it is resource-expensive and can have a negative impact on sleep quality, as well as the environment. With this study, we focus on the environmental impact that arises from resource utilisation during SA detection, and we propose remote monitoring (RM) as a potential solution that can improve the resource efficiency and reduce travel. By reusing infrastructure technology, such as mobile communication, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence (AI), RM establishes SA detection and diagnosis support services in the home environment. This study discusses the calculation of entropy of discrete-time stochastic biological systems. First, measurement methods of the system entropy of discrete-time linear stochastic networks are introduced. The system entropy is found to be characterized by system matrices of the discrete-time biological systems. Secondly, the system entropy of nonlinear discrete-time stochastic biological systems is discussed and is calculated based on a global linearization method. The approximation of the values of system entropy of nonlinear stochastic systems needs to solve an optimization problem that is constrained by a kind of linear matrix inequality (LMI). Finally, a practical biochemical system is provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed calculation method.

A Combined CFD-Response Surface Methodology Approach for Simulation and Optimization of Arsenic Removal in a Fixed Bed Adsorption Column
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
An experimentally validated CFD model was developed for lab-scale arsenic (As) fixed-bed columns using COMSOL Multiphysics. The effects of key factors such as the adsorbent bed depth, the feed flow rate, and the initial As concentration (conc.) on the overall As removal performance were investigated. Subsequently, the CFD was combined with response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize process conditions and examine main and interaction effects of these factors on model responses, i.e., the As removal efficiency and the bed saturation time. The ANOVA results suggested that quadratic regression models were highly significant for both responses. The established regression model equations predicted the response values closer to CFD measurements. It was found that, compared with the initial As conc. and the feed flow rate, the effect of the bed depth was more significant. Moreover, both the As removal efficiency and the bed saturation time were increased reasonably with the increasing bed... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic biodegradation, cyanide, electro-bioremediation, microbial fuel cell technology, omics
Cyanide compounds are hazardous compounds which are extremely toxic to living organisms, especially free cyanide in the form of hydrogen cyanide gas (HCN) and cyanide ion (CN−). These cyanide compounds are metabolic inhibitors since they can tightly bind to the metals of metalloenzymes. Anthropogenic sources contribute significantly to CN− contamination in the environment, more specifically to surface and underground waters. The treatment processes, such as chemical and physical treatment processes, have been implemented. However, these processes have drawbacks since they generate additional contaminants which further exacerbates the environmental pollution. The biological treatment techniques are mostly overlooked as an alternative to the conventional physical and chemical methods. However, the recent research has focused substantially on this method, with different reactor configurations that were proposed. However, minimal attention was given to the emerging technologies that sought... [more]
