Keywords: advantages and drawbacks, application fields, liquid phase microextraction, microextraction techniques
Liquid phase-based microextraction techniques (LPµETs) have attracted great attention from the scientific community since their invention and implementation mainly due to their high efficiency, low solvent and sample amount, enhanced selectivity and precision, and good reproducibility for a wide range of analytes. This review explores the different possibilities and applications of LPμETs including dispersive liquid−liquid microextraction (DLLME) and single-drop microextraction (SDME), highlighting its two main approaches, direct immersion-SDME and headspace-SDME, hollow-fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME) in its two- and three-phase device modes using the donor−acceptor interactions, and electro membrane extraction (EME). Currently, these LPμETs are used in very different areas of interest, from the environment to food and beverages, pharmaceutical, clinical, and forensic analysis. Several important potential applications of each technique will be reported, highlighting its a... [more]
Network Characteristic Control of Social Dilemmas in a Public Good Game: Numerical Simulation of Agent-Based Nonlinear Dynamics
Chulwook Park
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cultural evolution, game theory, public good game, random network, replicator dynamics
This paper proposes a possible mechanism for obtaining sizeable behavioral structures by simulating a network−agent dynamic on an evolutionary public good game with available social .learning. The model considers a population with a fixed number of players. In each round, the chosen players may contribute part of their value to a common pool. Then, each player may imitate the strategy of another player based on relative payoffs (whoever has the lower payoff adopts the strategy of the other player) and change his or her strategy using different exploratory variables. Relative payoffs are subject to incentives, including participation costs, but may also be subject to mutation, whose rate is sensitized by the network characteristics (social ties). The process discussed in this report is interesting and relevant across a broad range of disciplines that use game theory, including cultural evolutionary dynamics.

Keywords: 1D CNN, condition-based maintenance (CBM), fault diagnosis, fault simulation database
Maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS) are proposed as a future technology of the maritime industry. One of the key technologies for the development of MASS is condition-based maintenance (CBM) based on prognostics and health management (PHM). The CBM technology can be used for early detection of abnormalities based on the database and for a prediction of the fault occurring in the future. However, this technology has a problem that requires a high-quality database that reproduces the operation state of the actual ships and quantitatively and systematically indicates the characteristics for the various fault state of the device. To solve this problem, this paper presents a study on the development method of the fault database based on the reliability. Firstly, the reliability analysis of the target device was performed to select five types of the core fault modes. After that, a fault simulation scenario that defined the fault simulation test methodology was drawn. A land-based testbe... [more]

Xiushan Jiang, Qingti Pang, Dongya Zhao, Qingkang Zhang
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: discrete-time stochastic systems, generalized difference Riccati equations, indefinite LQ control, Pareto optimality, worst-case disturbance
This paper investigates the Pareto optimal strategy of discrete-time stochastic systems under H∞ constraint, in which the weighting matrices of the weighted sum cost function can be indefinite. Combining the H∞ control theory with the indefinite LQ control theory, the generalized difference Riccati equations (GDREs) are obtained. By means of the solution of the GDREs, the Pareto optimal strategy with H∞ constraint is derived, and the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the strategy are presented. Then the Pareto optimal solution under the worst-case disturbance is solved. Finally, the efficiency of the obtained results is illustrated by a numerical example.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: critical procedure, genetic BP neural network, key quality characteristics, manufacturing process, procedures quality
The product’s manufacturing process has an evident influence on product quality. In order to control the quality and identify the critical procedure of the product manufacturing process reasonably and effectively, a method combining genetic back-propagation (BP) neural network algorithm and grey relational analysis is proposed. Firstly, the genetic BP neural network algorithm is used to obtain the key quality characteristics (KQCs) in the product manufacturing process. At the same time, considering the three factors that have an essential impact on the quality of the procedures, the grey correlation analysis method is used to establish the correlation scoring matrix between the procedure and the KQCs to calculate the criticality of each procedure. Finally, taking the manufacturing process of the evaporator as a case, the application process of this method is introduced, and four critical procedures are identified. It provides a reference for the procedure quality control and improvemen... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 displacement seal gas escape, flow control limit systems, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), plugging limits, segment plug combination
CO2 displacement is an important technology to reduce emissions and improve crude oil recovery, as well as prevent CO2 escape. Effective storage is key to the successful implementation of this technology, especially for medium and high permeability reservoirs. The current flow control systems that are applied to seal gas escape are mainly gas/water alternation, CO2 foam, and CO2 foam gel, but there is no clear understanding of the plugging limits of various flow control systems and the mechanism of their combined use of residual oil. Therefore, in this paper, a series of core replacement experiments are conducted for different flow control systems and their combinations. The quantitative characterization of the core pore size distribution before and after the replacement is carried out using the NMR technique to try and determine the plugging limits of different plugging systems, and to investigate the residual oil utilization patterns of self-designed flow control system combinations... Keywords: antioxidants, LC-MS, phenolics, solid phase extraction, waste/by-products valorization
A methodology based on a solid phase extraction (SPE) was optimized for the recovery of phenolic compounds from the spent fermentation broth generated from Biofene® (trans-β-farnesene) production. For this purpose, two resins (XAD-2 and HP-20) and three desorption solutions (water, 50/50 ethanol/water, and ethanol) were tested. The most efficient resin revealed to be the HP-20, using ethanol as desorption solution, reaching an overall total phenolic compound recovery of ca. 80% when 6 BV (bed volume) of both feed and ethanol were applied. The optimization of the resin’s process cycle pointed to 15 BV feed to be treated per cycle and using the same volume of ethanol in the desorption step, with no need for an extra resin regeneration step, stably yielding 48% total phenolic compound recovery from the spent broth for at least 4 cycles, translating into 60 BV of feed being treated per BV of resin, and with the resin being still perfectly active. The extract was characterized using LC−ESI−... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: concentrated solar power, energy policy, energy transition, fossil-fuel-based economy, photovoltaic, solar energy, SWOT analysis
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is making significant progress in improving its economy by attracting tourists and trade. In the short run, however, economic activity will continue to be more based on oil, natural gas, and related industries. Rising demand for natural gas for power plants and industrial users, such as petrochemicals and steelmakers, has made the UAE a net gas importer, prompting the country to launch multibillion-dollar investments in nuclear and renewable energy. This study addresses the trend of solar energy production and consumption in the UAE. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis was performed on the different types of solar energy in the UAE, and some strategies were developed based on it. The SWOT analysis reveals promising strategies for the UAE’s solar energy transition that would reduce fossil fuel demand, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions through solar energy production, and transform the UAE into the carbon market centre of t... Clustering Analysis of Voltage Sag Events Based on Waveform Matching
Chenyan Hao, Jun Jin
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fast projection segmentation algorithm (FPSA), shapedtw, spectral clustering, voltage sag event
Voltage sags are a serious problem within power supplies, which pose threats to both residential electricity and industrial manufacturing. Since any one sag may be recorded by multiple monitoring devices from different substations, the issue of redundant information in data arises. In this regard, a novel method for voltage sag events based on projection technology, shape dynamic time warping (shapeDTW), and spectral clustering is proposed. The main contributions of this paper may be summarized as follows: (1) We present a new method for extracting the voltage anomaly waveform, which is a fast projection segmentation algorithm (FPSA). The voltage sag waveform is only a part of the voltage anomaly waveform, so the voltage anomaly waveform contains more information. (2) ShapeDTW and spectral clustering are used to match and cluster voltage anomaly waveforms, so as to achieve the normalization of voltage sag events. (3) In practical engineering, the proposed method in the paper can be use... [more]
Determining the Drawing Force in a Wire Drawing Process Considering an Arbitrary Hardening Law
Sergei Alexandrov, Yeong-Maw Hwang, Hiu Shan Rachel Tsui
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: engineering approach, strain-hardening, upper bound theorem, wire drawing
The present paper considers the wire drawing process through a conical die and provides an approximate solution for the drawing force, assuming an arbitrary hardening law. The solution is based on the upper bound theorem. However, this theorem does not apply to the stationary flow of strain-hardening materials. Therefore, an adopted engineering approach is to replace the original material model with a non-homogeneous, perfectly plastic model. The kinematically admissible velocity field is derived from an exact semi-analytical solution for the flow through an infinite channel, which increases the accuracy of the solution. The solution for the homogeneous perfectly plastic material compares with an available solution. The general solution is valid for any die angle. The numerical example focuses on the range of angles used in wire drawing. Since the material model is pressure-independent, it is straightforward to adopt the solution for calculating the force in extrusion.

Keywords: antioxidant assay, herbal mother tinctures, oxidation, polyphenol oxidase, UV–Vis spectrophotometry
Oxidation is a major concern in the food and cosmetics industry; however, little information is available in the literature about its effect during the production of herbal medicines. The impact of oxidation on herbal mother tincture (MT) manufacturing was investigated by performing an oxidative stress test, in which cryogenically ground fresh plants (Echinacea purpurea, Mentha piperita, Ginkgo biloba, and Hypericum perforatum) were exposed to air in a time-controlled manner before extraction. The effect of oxidation on the resulting extracts was evaluated using UV−Vis spectroscopy and potassium permanganate antioxidant assay. Furthermore, a tyrosinase enzymatic assay was performed on MTs to evaluate the behavior of the absorbance spectra of phenolic compounds during oxidation. Additionally, several commercially available herbal mother tinctures were examined for oxidative changes. The exposure of the fresh plant material to air for 30 min decreased the antioxidant activity in all four... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: evaluation method, new drilled well, old reservoir, wellbore stability
The borehole wall stability of depleted reservoirs is a key problem that restricts the deeper potential exploitation of old oilfields. Based on these, according to the seepage and elastic mechanics theory of porous media, combined with laboratory rock mechanics experiments, the dynamic evaluation model of geomechanical parameters of the old reservoir is established, and on this basis, the evaluation method of wellbore stability of new wells in the old reservoir is established, and the changing laws and influencing factors of the wellbore stability of the old reservoir are quantitatively evaluated. The research shows that reservoir pressure, reservoir porosity, effective stress coefficient, strength, in situ magnitude, and direction were all changed due to long-term exploitation; both collapse and fracture pressure decreased, the loss risk of drilling fluid was increased, and safe drilling azimuth was changed. The results can guide reasonable choices such as well position, track and mud... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: low temperatures, NH3-SCR, sulfates, tungsten oxide, vanadia species
In this study, a V2O5-Sb2O3/TiO2 monolithic catalyst was modified by introducing WO3. The WO3-modified catalyst exhibited enhanced catalytic activity in the measuring temperature range of 175−320 °C. The changes in dispersion of vanadia species were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR). A durability test was conducted in a wet SO2-containing atmosphere at 220 °C for 25 h. The sulfate deposition was estimated by temperature-programmed decomposition (TPDC) of sulfates, thermo-gravimetric (TG) analysis, and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) of NH3. Isothermal SO2 oxidation and temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) of NH4HSO4 with NO were performed. Based on these characterizations, effects of WO3 modification on the sulfate tolerance of the catalyst were explored.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dry reforming of methane, nickel, structure–reactivity, syngas production, zeolites
As the utilization of zeolites has become more frequent in the dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction, more systematic studies are required to evaluate properly the influence of zeolites’ composition and framework type on the performance. Therefore, in this work, a step-by-step study was performed with the aim of analyzing the effects of Ni loading (5, 10 or 15 wt.% over USY(3) zeolite), Si/Al ratio (3, 15 or 38 on USY zeolites with 15 wt.% Ni) and framework type (USY, BEA, ZSM-5 or MOR for 15 wt.% Ni and Si/Al ratios of ≈40) on catalysts’ properties and performances. Increasing Ni loadings enhanced CH4 and CO2 conversions even though the catalysts’ stability was decreasing over the time. The variation of the Si/Al ratio on USY and the use of different zeolites had also a remarkable impact on the catalytic performance. For instance, at 500−600 °C reaction temperatures, the catalysts with higher basicity and reducibility exhibited the best results. However, when the temperature was fur... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: Extraction, microwaves, propolis
Water-based propolis extracts usually contain up to 10-fold lower quantities of active ingredients due to poor solubility in water of propolis bioactive compounds when compared with ethanol-based extracts. Since ethanol-based extracts are of limited use, water-based extracts are preferred nowadays. The application of alternative extraction techniques should be evaluated to improve extraction efficiency. Aqueous propolis extracts were prepared using purified water and propylene glycol, 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin and sodium bicarbonate aqueous solutions. A microwave-assisted extraction method was applied in cycles. The total concentration of hydroxycinnamic acids in aqueous propolis extract produced by four extraction cycles was determined to be 1502.1 ± 130.1 μg/mL and 20% propylene glycol, 10% 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin and 5% sodium bicarbonate aqueous solutions, increasing the total concentration of hydroxycinnamic acids by 1.6, 1.7 and 1.9-fold, respectively. Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, high-speed camera, LVDT, reciprocating pump, U-Adolph theory, valve motion, visualization test
The structure and dynamics of a reciprocating pump liquid end affect the volumetric efficiency and net positive suction head. To match the kinematics with theoretical parameters, reciprocating pump valve motion and flow visualization tests and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses were performed on a wing-guided bevel discharge valve in a horizontal quintuple single-acting reciprocating pump. The valve motion test results showed that the maximum pump valve displacement and the pump valve opening and closing durations were approximately 8.3 mm, 29 ms, and 38 ms, respectively. The corresponding flow visualization test results were 11.4 mm, 9.5 ms, and 35.5 ms. The valve closing durations obtained from the valve motion and flow visualization tests are approximately twice as high as the U-Adolph prediction. The maximum displacement obtained from the valve motion test is consistent with the U-Adolph prediction. Three-dimensional CFD analyses were performed to investigate the flow stat... [more]
Sigmoid-like Event-Triggered Security Cruise Control under Stochastic False Data Injection Attacks

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: autonomous driving, event-triggered scheme, false data injection attacks, security control
This paper presents a Sigmoid-like event-triggered scheme (Sigmoid-like ETS) for security cruise control systems (CCSs) under stochastic false data injection (FDI) attacks. In order to improve the sensitivity of the ETS, a Sigmoid-like function is first proposed to adjust the event-triggered threshold, dynamically. In what follows, by considering a class of stochastic FDI attacks which obey Bernoulli distribution, the Sigmoid-like event-triggered security control strategy is proposed to ensure both the security and resource saving of the CCSs. Thus, a sufficient stability and stabilization criterion is well derived to present the co-design of an H∞ control and event-triggered parameter. Finally, some simulation experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed Sigmoid-like event-triggered security cruise control for networked vehicles.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network, Bayesian regularization algorithm, casing collapse strength
With the application of complex fracturing and other complex technologies, external extrusion has become the main cause of casing damage, which makes non-API high-extrusion-resistant casing continuously used in unconventional oil and gas resources exploitation. Due to the strong sensitivity of string ovality, uneven wall thickness, residual stress, and other factors to high anti-collapse casing, the API formula has a big error in predicting the anti-collapse strength of high anti-collapse casing. Therefore, Bayesian regularization artificial neural network (BRANN) is used to predict the external collapse strength of high anti-collapse casing. By collecting full-scale physical data, including initial defect data, geometric size, mechanical parameters, etc., after data preprocessing, the casing collapse strength data set is established for model training and blind measurement. Under the classical three-layer neural network, the Bayesian regularization algorithm is used for training. Thro... [more]

Keywords: activity coefficient, biotrickling filter, culture medium, Modelling, partition coefficient
The effect of the partition coefficient on the simulation of the operation of a biotrickling filter treating a mixture of sulfur compounds was analyzed to evaluate the pertinence of using Henry’s law in determining its removal capacity. The analysis consisted of the simulation of a biotrickling filter that bio-oxides hydrogen sulfide (H2S), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), methyl mercaptan (MM) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) using different types of models for determining the partition coefficient: Henry’s law for pure water, Henry’s law adjusted from experimental data, a mixed model (Extended UNIQUAC) and a semi-empirical model of two-parameters. The simulations were compared with experimental data. It was observed that Henry’s law for pure water could produce significant deviations from empirical data due to the liquid phase not being pure water. The two-parameter model better fits with similar results compared to the extended UNIQUAC model, with a lower calculation cost and necessary paramete... [more]
