Laser Doppler Velocimetry Test of Flow Characteristics in Draft Tube of Model Pump Turbine
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: laser Doppler velocimetry, pressure pulsation, pump turbine, vortex rope
For Francis pump turbines, the pressure pulsation characteristics of the draft tube are some of the key concerns during the operation of the units. The pressure pulsation characteristics of the draft tube are directly related to the draft tube spiral cavitating vortex rope. In this paper, the velocity distribution in the draft tube of a Francis pump turbine is tested by means of laser Doppler velocimetry. The velocity pulsation was found to be directly related to the pressure pulsation, while the velocity pulsation was also influenced by the cavitation coefficient. The main frequency of the velocity pulsation was close to the main frequency of the pressure pulsation and became larger as the cavitation factor increased.

Simple Particle Relaxation Modeling in One-Dimensional Oscillating Flows
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Basset, drag models, Landau & Lifshitz, one-dimensional, oscillating flow, particles, Schiller & Naumann, spheres, Stokes, ϵ-Re plane
The relaxation of a rigid particle suspended in a one-dimensional oscillating flow is calculated according to different drag models and the results are compared. Conditions are derived under which relaxation can be neglected or drag models can be substituted by simpler ones. This investigation is conducted analytically and graphically via the plane defined by the Reynolds number and amplitude parameter. This work matches various, mostly analytic drag models together to consider simple particle relaxation with a few, broad range input parameters and cover large parts of the plane spanned by Reynolds number and amplitude parameter.

Research on an Efficient Deep-Hole Application Method for Liquid Fertilizer Based on Alternate Drilling
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: acupuncture mechanism, corn, design, high-speed hole drilling, liquid fertilizer, Optimization
Liquid fertilizers are mainly applied by spraying liquid fertilizer on the surface of crop leaves and by deep openings between rows. The first causes considerable environmental pollution, and the second can easily cause to damage the root system of crops. In this study, corn crops were taken as the study object and an efficient deep-hole application method for liquid fertilizer based on alternate drilling was proposed. The needle body is driven by the spur gear wheel system in a caving mechanism to puncture holes alternately in a vertical posture and high-speed punctures are implemented with less disturbance to the soil. The cylindrical hollow cam of the mechanism is controlled so that the fertilizer needle sprays fertilizer when injected into soil and stops injecting when pulled out of the soil. Based on the bench test, fertilizer injecting performance and energy saving performance of the differential two-way fertilizer supply distribution device were analyzed and the head loss for en... Exploratory Research on Drainage Structure of Highway Tunnel Based on Reducing the Risk of Crystallization Blockage
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: crystal blockage, drainage system, highway tunnel, lining disease, structure optimization
Crystal blockages of tunnel drainage systems severely undermine the tunnel lining structure and operation safety. In order to reduce the risk of crystal blockages of tunnel drainage systems, the distribution of highway tunnel defects was identified through a field survey, indoor test, and literature analysis, and an optimization method of tunnel drainage structures was proposed. The research suggested the following: (1) Lining water leakage and construction joint water leakage were the most common defects in the tunnel drainage system of Renhua−Xinfeng Expressway and Yingde−Huaiji Expressway in Guangdong Province, accounting for 60% and 32% of total defects, respectively. The number of defects that occurred in the drainage system of the tunnel was larger in the granite formation, with the number of road seepage and inspection chamber crystallization incidents reaching 2.5/km and 2.8/km, respectively. (2) The groundwater was mainly alkaline with a pH value of 8~12, Ca2+ (107 mg/L) was t... [more]

Astaxanthin Ameliorates Diabetic Retinopathy in Swiss Albino Mice via Inhibitory Processes of Neuron-Specific Enolase Activity
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: intravitreal injection, neuroendocrine function, neurovascular complication, optokinetic motor response, retinal degeneration, visual acuity
Retinopathy is one of the most common complications of diabetes mellitus. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) occurs due to microvascular damage in retinal tissues provoked by high blood sugar levels. The available drugs for DR are limited. Astaxanthin (AST) has anti-hypertensive, anti-obesity, and anti-diabetic properties. However, the therapeutic effect of AST on DR remains elusive. The present study is designed to investigate the effects of AST on DR via inhibition of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) activity. DR was induced by the administration of streptozotocin (STZ, 35 mg/kg: intraperitoneal; and 20 μL of STZ: intravitreal) in mice. AST (10 and 20 mg/kg) was administered orally (p.o.) for 21 days. The DR associated visual changes were assessed at different time intervals via optokinetic motor response (OMR) and penta-maze (PM) tests. Blood glucose level as well as retinal catalase, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), & neuron-specific enolase (NSE) were estimated. The reference drug i.e., dexametha... [more]

A Method for the Integrated Optimal Design of Multiphase Pump Based on the Sparse Grid Model
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: flow field characteristics, integrated design, multiphase pump, numerical analysis, Sparse Grid method
Multiphase pumps are used as an important tool for natural gas hydrate extraction owing to their excellent gas−liquid mixing and transport properties. This paper proposes an adaptive response surface-based integrated optimization design method. A model pump is designed based on the axial flow pump design theory. The model pump is numerically simulated and analyzed to obtain its performance parameters. Then the structural and performance parameters of the pump are parameterized to establish a closed-loop input−output system. Based on this closed-loop system, a sensitivity analysis is performed on the structural parameters of the impeller and guide vane, and the parameters that affect the performance of the gas−liquid hybrid pump the most are derived. The Sparse Grid method was introduced to design the experiment and construct the approximate model. The structural parameters of the impeller and guide vane are used as design variables to optimize the pressure increment and efficiency of t... [more]

Bio-Fenton-Assisted Biological Process for Efficient Mineralization of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from the Environment
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Bio-Fenton, bio-remediation, microbial population, PAHs
The intensive production of fossil fuels has led to serious polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination in water and soil environments (as PAHs are typical types of emerging contaminants). Bio-Fenton, an alternative to Fenton oxidation, which generates hydrogen peroxide at a nearly neutral pH condition, could ideally work as a pretreatment to recalcitrant organics, which could be combined with the subsequent biological treatment without any need for pH adjustment. The present study investigated the performance of a Bio-Fenton-assisted biological process for mineralization of three typical types of PAHs. The hydrogen peroxide production, PAH removal, overall organic mineralization, and microbial community structure were comprehensively studied. The results showed that the combined process could achieve efficient chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal (88.1%) of mixed PAHs as compared to activated sludge (33.1%), where individual PAH removal efficiencies of 99.6%, 83.8%, and 91.3%... Parametric Sensitivity Analysis and Performance Evaluation of High-Temperature Anion-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 3D modeling, Fuel Cells, high temperature, HT-AEMFC, local current density distribution, relative humidity
In this paper, a three-dimensional model of a high-temperature anion-exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-AEMFC) operating at 110 °C is presented. All major transport phenomena along with the electrochemical reactions that occur in the cell are modeled. Since the water is exclusively in the form of steam and there is no phase transition to deal with in the cell, the water management is greatly simplified. The cell performance under various current loads is evaluated, and the results are validated against the experimental data. The cell performance is examined across a range of operating conditions, including cell temperature, inlet flow rate, and inlet relative humidity (RH). The critical link between the local distributions of species and local current densities along the channels is identified. The distribution of reactants continuously drops in the gas flow direction along the flow channels, causing a non-uniform local current distribution that becomes more pronounced at high current loa... An Investigation on the Features of Deformation and Residual Stress Generated by Patch Welding with Different Plate Sizes
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: deformation, patch joint, residual stress, welding
Welding is widely used to manufacture and repair steel structures such as piping and pressure vessels. Welding induces deformation and residual stress, which influences the mechanical performance of the structural members. Noting patch welding, which is applied to repair steel structures, a series of patch welding experiments and numerical analyses were carried out. The features of out-of-plane deformation and residual stress by patch welding were examined by changing the patch size. The out-of-plane deformation showed different modes in the patch joints. The magnitude of the out-of-plane deformation depended on the patch size. The tensile residual stress at the weld toe increased with the enlargement of the patch size. The costs for the different sizes of patch welding were estimated for choosing the patch size reasonably. The patch size should be determined by considering the mechanical influences of welding and the economic viewpoints of the welding process.

Electroenzymatic Model System for the Determination of Catalytic Activity of Erwinia carotovora L-Asparaginase
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: carbon nanotubes, electro oxidation, electrochemistry, Erwinia carotovora L-asparaginase, L-asparagine, protein electrochemistry, screen-printed electrode
An electrochemical method for the determination of the catalytic activity of L-asparaginase (ASNase) from Erwinia carotovora was proposed. Our approach is based on the electrooxidation of amino acids from L-asparaginase polypeptide backbones. The electrochemical behavior of ASNase on electrodes obtained by screen-printing modified with single-wall carbon nanotubes (SPE/SWCNTs) as sensing elements demonstrated a broad oxidation peak at 0.5−0.6 V centered at 0.531 ± 0.010 V. We have shown that in the presence of the substrate L-asparagine, the oxidation current of the enzyme was reduced in a concentration-dependent manner. The specificity of electrochemical analysis was confirmed in experiments with glycine, an amino acid with no substrate activity on ASNase and does not reduce the oxidation peak of L-asparaginase. The addition of glycine did not significantly influence the amplitude of the oxidation current. The innovative aspects of the proposed electrochemical sensor are the direct mo... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: convolutional neural network, energy consumption prediction, process industry, time series decomposition
Countries all over the world are making their contribution to the common goal of energy saving and emission reduction. Solar energy is gaining more attention as a renewable energy source. Polysilicon is an important raw material for solar panels and the production of polysilicon is a vital part of the photovoltaic industry. Polysilicon production is a typical process industry enterprise, and its production process is continuous and highly energy intensive. Therefore, it is necessary to forecast and analyze the consumption of polysilicon production plants. To address the problem that it is difficult to predict future consumption based on historical data alone due to the time-series, massive, nonlinear, and complex nature of data in polysilicon workshops. This study proposes a combined workshop energy consumption prediction model based on Bayesian estimation of time-series decomposition and convolutional neural network (TSD-CNN). Development of a Hydrokinetic Turbine Backwater Prediction Model for Inland Flow through Validated CFD Models
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: axial flow turbines, backwater, Computational Fluid Dynamics, hydrokinetic, inland hydrokinetic
Hydrokinetic turbine deployment in inland water reticulation systems such as irrigation canals has potential for future renewable energy development. Although research and development analysing the hydrodynamic effects of these turbines in tidal applications has been carried out, inland canal system applications with spatial constraints leading to possible blockage and backwater effects resulting from turbine deployment have not been considered. Some attempts have been made to develop backwater models, but these were site-specific and performed under constant operational conditions. Therefore, the aim of this work was to develop a generic and simplified method for calculating the backwater effect of HK turbines in inland systems. An analytical backwater approximation based on assumptions of performance metrics and inflow conditions was tested using validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. A Review of the Application of Discrete Element Method in Agricultural Engineering: A Case Study of Soybean
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: contact model, coupling method, DEM model, soil, soybean, validation
The discrete element method has become a common method for analyzing the contact interaction between particulate materials and between particles and mechanical components. It has been widely used in agricultural engineering and other fields. Taking soybean as an example, soybean seed particles always have contact effects between particles and mechanical components in the process of planting, harvesting, threshing, separation, cleaning, and processing. The discrete element method can be used to obtain information on the contact forces between seed particles and mechanical parts, as well as the velocity and displacement of seed particle motion from a microscopic perspective. This paper summarizes the application of the discrete element method in soybean cultivation and production processes in recent years. This will help future researchers to conduct relevant test studies, develop and improve existing research methods. It can also serve as a guide and reference for the production and pro... [more]

Unsaturated Hydraulic Conductivity Estimation—A Case Study Modelling the Soil-Atmospheric Boundary Interaction
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: alternative method, hydraulic conductivity, numerical analyses, pore water pressure, unsaturated soil
Pore water pressure changes due to soil-atmospheric boundary interaction can significantly influence soil behaviour and can negatively affect the safety and stability of geotechnical structures. For example, prolonged rainfall events can lead to increased pore water pressure and lower strength; repeated cycles of pore water pressure changes can lead to degradation of strength. These effects are likely to become more severe in the future due to climate change in many parts of the world. To analyse the behaviour of soil subjected to atmospheric boundary interactions, several parameters are needed, and hydraulic conductivity is one of the more important and is difficult to determine. Hydraulic conductivity deduced from laboratory tests are often different from those from the field tests, sometimes by orders of magnitude. The problem becomes even more complicated when the soil state is unsaturated, where the hydraulic conductivity varies with the soil’s state of saturation. In this paper,... [more]

Effects of Water Content and Irrigation of Packing Materials on the Performance of Biofilters and Biotrickling Filters: A Review
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biofilters, biotrickling filters, intermittent trickling, moisture content, packing material, VOC
Biofilters (BFs) and biotrickling filters (BTFs) are two types of bioreactors used for treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Both BFs and BTFs use packing materials in which various microorganisms are immobilised. The water phase in BFs is stationary and used to maintain the humidity of packing materials, while BTFs have a mobile liquid phase. Optimisation of irrigation of packing materials is crucial for effective performance of BFs and BTFs. A literature review is presented on the influence of water content of packing materials on the biofiltration efficiency of various pollutants. Different configurations of BFs and BTFs and their influence on moisture distribution in packing materials were discussed. The review also presents various packing materials and their irrigation control strategies applied in recent biofiltration studies. The sources of this review included recent research articles from scientific journals and several review articles discussing BFs and BTFs.

Strengthening Criteria Independence through Optimization of Alternative Value Ratio Comparisons
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: consensus, criteria independence, group decision making, multicriteria decision making, Optimization, ratio scaling, scale distortion
Every decision maker’s internal scale is different based on a myriad of possible factors unique to that decision maker. Conflicting criteria within and between alternatives in multicriteria decision making can create negative effects within the weighting schemes and amplify preference biases and scale disparities between decision makers in a group decision context. Additionally, the weighting of group decision-making frameworks can intensify the already skewed criteria values. When making judgments against requirements, it may be preferable to reduce scale trend distortions between decision makers as much as possible. Previous research supports that certain information presentation modes can significantly reduce preference bias and strengthen criteria independence against requirements through cross alternative anchoring. This paper expands that research and proposes a new optimization model for strengthening criteria independence and consensus in group decision making. Initial results... [more]
