Research on Online Detection Method of Transformer Winding Deformation Based on VFTO Characteristics
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: frequency response method, transformer winding, VFTO characteristics, winding deformation.
At present, most of the winding fault detections of transformers use offline methods, which require the entire line to be powered off or after the transformer has been shut down due to a serious fault, and they cannot detect the running status of the windings in real time and online. Since the transformer will be impacted by VFTO during operation, the VFTO is used as the excitation, and the basic principle of the frequency response method is used to propose an online detection method of transformer winding deformation based on VFTO characteristics. The finite element software is used to calculate the equivalent circuit parameters of normal and deformed windings, and the equivalent circuit model of the transformer windings before and after deformation is established. Due to the uncertainty of the VFTO waveform, combined with the frequency response method, the VFTO waveform is injected into the transformer winding health, and the frequency response curve is obtained from the deformed equ... Dual Sagnac Interferometer Distributed Optical Fiber Localization Method Based on Hilbert−Huang Transform
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: dual Sagnac interferometers, location accuracy, long-distance optical fiber sensing, polarization compensation module.
In order to solve the problem that the dual Mach Zehnder (M-Z) interferometer system is easily affected by external environmental noise, a data signal-processing scheme based on Hilbert−Huang transform (HHT) is proposed to achieve high-precision location with distributed optical fibers. The polarization compensation module has a built-in dual Sagnac interferometer system which is used to stabilize the polarization state of the Sagnac interferometer. The eigenmode function is obtained by empirical mode decomposition of the received two optical signals, and then the Hilbert spectrum is obtained by superimposing the Hilbert transform, so that the high-similarity curve caused by the vibration signal can be clearly and intuitively extracted. The optical signal information can be calculated based on the cross-correlation and delay estimation algorithm to accurately obtain the vibration position information. The experimental results show that the positioning accuracy can reach ±11 m, with a s... [more]

Application of Heat Pumps in New Housing Estates in Cities Suburbs as an Means of Energy Transformation in Poland
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed energy systems, energy efficiency in buildings, heat pumps, heat pumps coupled with photovoltaics, new micro districts in city suburbs.
This paper presents possible applications of heat pumps in buildings during the energy transformation and decarbonization of a country whose energy sector is highly centralized and based on coal. Contemporary cities are spreading beyond the existing borders and new areas cannot be supplied by the existing centralized district heating system. The only form of energy that is available on the outskirts of cities is electricity, which means that it must be used for all energy needs, including heating. In such a case, the use of heat pumps is perfectly justified in terms of energy, economy and environment, especially when they are coupled with photovoltaic systems. Hypothetical micro housing estate energy systems based on photovoltaics and heat pumps are analyzed in the paper. New options for configuration and operation of the energy systems are considered. Results of a simulation study show that by creating a common local electricity network and a local heating network powered by a central... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bearingless switched reluctance motor, magnetic circuit, self-decoupled, suspension force, topology structure, torque.
Bearingless switched reluctance motor (BSRM) adopts a doubly salient structure without windings on the rotor. BSRMs have the advantages of high rate of fault tolerance and simple structure, high power, super high speed and strong adaptability. They have broad application prospects in aerospace, flywheel energy storage, new energy and biomedical fields. Firstly, the suspension operation mechanism of a conventional double winding BSRM is described in this paper. The coupling between torque and suspension force is analyzed with a finite element method. On this basis, from the perspective of magnetic circuit optimization of the torque system and suspension system, the magnetic circuit design, decoupling mechanism and performance characteristics of self-decoupled BSRMs with different topological structures are described centering on the self-decoupled topology form of the BSRM. Finally, the study and development of BSRMs in the future are prospected based on the research status.

Design, Implementation and Test of a Novel Cylindrical Permanent Magnet DC Linear Motor
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Electricity & Electrical Devices
Keywords: Ansys-Maxwell, cylindrical motor, linear motor, permanent magnets.
Electric motors that convert electrical energy into motion are one of the basic components of automation systems. In these systems, either linear or circular motion is needed. Linear motion can be obtained either from motors that generate circular motion with the help of ancillary equipment or directly by the means of a linear motor. Obtaining linear motion from motors that produce rotary motion leads to additional costs and reduced efficiency. Linear motors, on the other hand, eliminate the need for conversion mechanisms. Despite this advantage, linear motors have some disadvantages, such as length limitation and low force/current ratio. In this study, a novel Cylindrical Direct Current Linear Motor (CDCLM) with high force/current ratio and no length limitation (long stroke) has been developed. Analyses of the developed motor has been performed with an analytical method. In addition, detailed numerical analyses have been carried out in an Ansys-Maxwell environment. A prototype of the... April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: autonomous highway driving, autonomous vehicles, hierarchical control architecture.
Autonomous vehicles in highway driving scenarios are expected to become a reality in the next few years. Decision-making and motion planning algorithms, which allow autonomous vehicles to predict and tackle unpredictable road traffic situations, play a crucial role. Indeed, finding the optimal driving decision in all the different driving scenarios is a challenging task due to the large and complex variability of highway traffic scenarios. In this context, the aim of this work is to design an effective hybrid two-layer path planning architecture that, by exploiting the powerful tools offered by the emerging Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) in combination with model-based approaches, lets the autonomous vehicles properly behave in different highway traffic conditions and, accordingly, to determine the lateral and longitudinal control commands. Specifically, the DRL-based high-level planner is responsible for training the vehicle to choose tactical behaviors according to the surrounding... [more]

Influence of Clay Content on CO2-Rock Interaction and Mineral-Trapping Capacity of Sandstone Reservoirs
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: clay content, CO2 storage, mineral dissolution, mineral precipitation, mineral-trapping, porosity evolution, reservoir simulation, rock interactions.
The injection of carbon dioxide (CO2) is an essential technology for maximizing the potential of hydrocarbon reservoirs while reducing the impact of greenhouse gases. However, because of the complexity of this injection, there will be many different chemical reactions between the formation fluids and the rock minerals. This is related to the clay content of sandstone reservoirs, which are key storage targets. Clay content and clay types in sandstone can vary substantially, and the influence of these factors on reservoir-scale CO2-water-sandstone interactions has not been managed appropriately. Consequently, by simulating the process of CO2 injection in two different clay-content sandstones (i.e., high- and low-clay content), we investigated the effect of the sandstone clay concentration on CO2-water-sandstone interactions in this article. High clay content (Bandera Grey sandstone) and low clay content (Bandera Brown sandstone) were considered as potential storage reservoirs and their r... [more]

Marginal CO2 and SO2 Abatement Costs and Determinants of Coal-Fired Power Plants in China: Considering a Two-Stage Production System with Different Emission Reduction Approaches
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal-fired power plants, end-of-pipe abatement, marginal abatement cost, quantile regression, two-stage production system.
Marginal abatement cost (MAC) plays an essential role in pricing pollutants and guiding environmental policies. Considering the heavy polluting nature of China’s coal power industry, this paper aims at providing companies and policymakers with more comprehensive information on the cost of abatement by estimating the MACs of CO2 and SO2 for coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) in China. This study contributes to the literature by considering an interconnected two-stage production system to investigate. The estimation framework is advanced in combining the electricity production and pollution abatement process of CFPPs into a convex quantile regression (CQR) model. The results show that the averages of MAC for CO2 and SO2 are estimated to be 367.56 Yuan/ton and 662.30 Yuan/ton, respectively, indicating that the reduction of such emissions is still costly. The heterogeneous analysis then indicates that large CFPPs, central-government-owned power plants (CGOPPs), and low-regulated CFPPs tend to... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: commodity options, crude oil price risk, decision making, decision rules, Greeks, implied volatility, knowledge discovery.
The high volatility of commodity prices and various problems that the energy sector has to deal with in the era of COVID-19 have significantly increased the risk of oil price changes. These changes are of the main concern of companies for which oil is the main input in the production process, and therefore oil price determines the production costs. The main goal of this paper is to discover decision rules for a buyer of American WTI (West Texas Intermediate) crude oil call options. The presented research uses factors characterizing the option price, such as implied volatility and option sensitivity factors (delta, gamma, vega, and theta, known as “Greeks”). The performed analysis covers the years 2008−2022 and options with an exercise period up to three months. The decision rules are discovered using association analysis and are evaluated in terms of the three investment efficiency indicators: total payoff, average payoff, and return on investment. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery safety, gas analysis, lithium-ion, second eruption, vent gas emission.
Lithium batteries are being utilized more widely, increasing the focus on their thermal safety, which is primarily brought on by their thermal runaway. This paper’s focus is the energy storage power station’s 50 Ah lithium iron phosphate battery. An in situ eruption study was conducted in an inert environment, while a thermal runaway experiment was conducted utilizing sealed pressure containers and an external heating triggering mechanism. Both the amount of gas release and the battery’s maximum temperature were discovered. Using gas chromatography, the gas emission from the battery was examined. Its principal constituents included CO, H2, CO2, CH4, C2H4, and so on. Moreover, the experiment discovered a second eruption of lithium iron phosphate, and the stage of its eruption was separated by the pressure signal of the sealed experimental chamber, giving a theoretical foundation and technological backing for the thermal catastrophe safety of lithium batteries.

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: InGaN cathode, isothermal, nonisothermal, photon-enhanced thermionic emission.
Photon-enhanced thermionic emission (PETE) is an efficient solar energy conversion mechanism that combines photovoltaic effects and thermionic emissions. In this study, a diffusion−emission model of electrons for the InGaN cathode was deduced based on one-dimensional continuity equations. The temperature dependence of the excess electron concentration, current density, and conversion efficiency at different cathode electron affinities was simulated, and the performance of the PETE converter under isothermal and nonisothermal state was compared. The results show that the improvement in conversion efficiency under isothermal condition was limited by the increase in anode temperature and reached the maximum of ~22% at an electron affinity of 0.56−0.59 eV and the operating temperature of 710−740 K. When the anode temperature was 500 K, the conversion efficiency increased with the increase in the electron affinity and exceeded the maximum value of the isothermal state at 0.6 eV. We explored... Integration of PV Sources in Prosumer Installations Eliminating Their Negative Impact on the Supplying Grid and Optimizing the Microgrid Operation
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: 3-phase 4-wire PV inverter, power quality improvement, prosumer installation, PV integration, voltage unbalance.
This paper concerns the mitigation of voltage disturbances deteriorating power quality and disrupting the operation of LV distribution grids due to the high penetration of PV energy sources in prosumer installations. A novel control strategy for 3-phase 4-wire PV inverters is proposed, which ensures the transmission of PV active power and simultaneous compensation of load unbalance and reactive power, making the prosumer installation balanced and purely active. It results in the balance of phase voltages and the mitigation of their variability. Unlike other methods used for voltage regulation in LV grids, the proposed solution contributes to the reduction in losses, is simple, and does not require additional costs. In the paper, a control algorithm for the PV inverter is described. Its effectiveness was tested by simulation using a model of the real LV distribution grid developed in the PSCAD/EMTDC program. The results of the simulations are presented and evaluated.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon capture and storage, integrated energy system, ladder-type carbon trading mechanism, power-to-gas heat recovery, wind power accommodation.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an effective means to achieve the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. To improve the operating economics and low-carbon emission of an integrated energy system, the strong exothermic property of power-to-gas is utilized for heat recovery and injection into the heat network. This expands the adjustable range of electric output of combined heat and power (CHP) units which will improve wind power accommodation. The CO2 produced by the coal-fired unit is captured using post-combustion carbon capture technology, and then stored and used to manufacture methane, in order to realize the electric−gas−heat integrated energy system coupled with power-to-gas. Keywords: carbon neutrality, carbon sink, CO2 emission allowance price, energy production, growth-based carbon sink, renewable wood.
More than 25% of the total energy consumption in Finland has been produced with wood fuels. Since 2012, the share has been greater than that of oil, coal, or natural gas. Internal carbon pricing is used to manage the risks in wood procurement after wood import from Russia ended. Further, the EU announced plans to sell more carbon emission permits to fund the EU’s exit from Russian energy. To manage these challenges, a data-driven internal carbon pricing mechanism (DDICPM) has been developed for wood procurement optimization. Particularly, local changes are considered via available information about growth-based carbon sinks (GBCS). The results of the new scenario were compared to the basic national scenario that ensures carbon neutrality in forestry.
