Charging and Discharging Scheduling for Electrical Vehicles Using a Shapley-Value Approach
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: battery charging, coalition, electric vehicles, Optimization, Shapley value
The number of electric vehicles (EV) in the world has been increasing and is gaining momentum. The large-scale use of EVs in public life has initiated the need to establish EV battery charging services within the power system. Currently, EVs serve as a transportation tool and also as a flexible load. This publication examines the possibility of the owner of an electric vehicle choosing a battery recharging point, as well as of the involvement of several decision makers in the selection of a charging schedule. This problem is important because we assume that a significant proportion of EVs mainly use two parking spaces, one located close to the place of residence and another close to the workplace. We accept and prove that a car charging station can be created by the employer (company) and implemented in the best interests of the employer and the employee (EV owner). For that, a coalition between the company and the EV owner has to be formed. To support rational decisions, this study so... [more]

Techno Economic Analysis of Vehicle to Grid (V2G) Integration as Distributed Energy Resources in Indonesia Power System
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: driving pattern, electric vehicles, frequency regulation, load leveling, vehicle-to-grid
High penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) leads to high stress on a power grid, especially when the supply cannot cover and actively respond to the unpredictable demand caused by charging EVs. In the Java-Madura-Bali (JAMALI) area, Indonesia, the capability of the grid to balance its supply and demand is very limited, and massive EV charging additionally worsens the condition because of unbalanced load profiles. Ancillary services of EVs have led to the idea of utilizing EV batteries for grid support, owing to their high-speed response to the fluctuating power system. In this study, a techno-economic analysis of the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) system in the JAMALI grid is conducted in terms of the changes in the feed-in tariff schemes, including regular, natural, and demand response tariffs. The results show that by utilizing EVs, the supply during peak hours can be reduced by up to 2.8% (for coal) and 8.8% (for gas). EVs owned by business entities as operating vehicles with a natural tari... [more]

Design of a Novel Modular Axial-Flux Double Rotor Switched Reluctance Drive
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: axial-flux machines, design of electric drives, modular construction, soft magnetic composites, switched reluctance machines
Nowadays, there is a renewed interest in switched reluctance machines and especially in axial-flux switched reluctance machines (AFSRM). This paper presents a comprehensive design procedure for modular AFSRM with an inner stator and two exterior rotors that have a new distribution of the stator and rotor poles, resulting in short magnetic paths with no flux reversal. After a description of the proposed machine, the output torque equation is derived from a simplified non-linear energy conversion loop and guidelines for its design are given. Once the preliminary sizing has been carried out the different modules of the AFSRM, the magnetically active parts made with SMC, are reshaped or refined using 3D printing and 3D electromagnetic finite element analysis until they reach their definitive shape and dimensions. Finally, an AFSRM has been built following the proposed design procedure and has been validated by experimental measurements.

A High-Efficiency Three-Level ANPC Inverter Based on Hybrid SiC and Si Devices
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: ANPC, hybrid SiC and Si, loss analysis
Silicon carbide (SiC) devices have excellent performance, such as higher switching frequency and lower switching loss compared with traditional silicon (Si) devices. The application of SiC devices in inverters can achieve higher efficiency and power density. In recent years, the production process of SiC devices has become more mature, but the cost is still several times that of traditional Si devices. In order to balance cost and efficiency, replacing only some of the Si devices with SiC devices in a topology is a better choice. This paper proposed a high-efficiency hybrid active neutral point clamped (ANPC) three-level inverter which has only two SiC devices and the other devices are Si devices. A specific modulation strategy was applied to concentrate switching losses on the SiC devices and reduce the on-state loss through parallel operation during freewheeling intervals. Theoretical efficiency curves and experimental verification of the proposed hybrid scheme with Si-only and SiC-o... [more]

Machine Learning for Benchmarking Models of Heating Energy Demand of Houses in Northern Canada
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: benchmarking models, building automation and control system, linear regression, Machine Learning, measurements, Northern houses, ongoing commissioning
In most cases, the benchmarking models of energy use in houses are developed based on current and past data, and they continue to be used without any update. This paper proposes the method of retraining of benchmarking models by applying machine learning techniques when new measurements are made available. The method uses as a case study the measurements of heating energy demand from two semi-detached houses of Northern Canada. The results of the prediction of heating energy demand using static or augmented window techniques are compared with measurements. The daily energy signature is used as a benchmarking model due to its simplicity and performance. However, the proposed retraining method can be applied to any form of benchmarking model. The method should be applied in all possible situations, and be an integral part of intelligent building automation and control systems (BACS) for the ongoing commissioning for building energy-related applications.

Logistics Design for Mobile Battery Energy Storage Systems
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage systems, electric vehicle charging stations, logistics
Currently, there are three major barriers toward a greener energy landscape in the future: (a) Curtailed grid integration of energy from renewable sources like wind and solar; (b) The low investment attractiveness of large-scale battery energy storage systems; and, (c) Constraints from the existing electric infrastructure on the development of charging station networks to meet the increasing electrical transportation demands. A new conceptual design of mobile battery energy storage systems has been proposed in recent studies to reduce the curtailment of renewable energy while limiting the public costs of battery energy storage systems. This work designs a logistics system in which electric semi-trucks ship batteries between the battery energy storage system and electric vehicle charging stations, enabling the planning and operation of power grid independent electric vehicle charging station networks. This solution could be viable in many regions in the United States (e.g., Texas) where... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: capacitance, Energy Storage, ESR, experimental validation, frequency model, Modelling, supercapacitor
Supercapacitors, one of the most promising energy storage technologies for high power density industrial applications, exchange the energy mostly through power electronic converters, operating under high frequency components due to the commutation. The high frequency produces important effects on the performance of the supercapacitors in relation to their capacitance, inductance and internal resistance (ESR). These parameters are fundamental to evaluate the efficiency of this energy storage system. The aim of the paper is to obtain an accurate model of two supercapacitors connected in series (functional and extrapolated unit) to represent the frequency effects for a wide range of frequencies. The methodology is based on the definition of an appropriate equivalent electric circuit with voltage dependance, obtaining their parameters from experimental tests, carried out by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and the use of specific software tools such as EC-Lab® and Stat... March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: BEMT, figure of merit, mono tiltrotor (MTR), multi-objective optimization, propulsive efficiency
A mono tiltrotor (MTR) design which combines concepts of a tiltrotor and coaxial rotor is presented. The aerodynamic modeling of the MTR based on blade element momentum theory (BEMT) is conducted, and the method is fully validated with previous experimental data. An automated optimization approach integrating BEMT modeling and optimization algorithms is developed. Parameters such as inter-rotor spacing, blade twist, taper ratio and aspect ratio are chosen as design variables. Single-objective (in hovering or in cruising state) optimizations and multi-objective (both in hovering and cruising states) optimizations are studied at preset design points; i.e., hovering trim and cruising trim. Two single-objective optimizations result in different sets of parameter selections according to the different design objectives. March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicles, electricity consumption, photovoltaics, residential buildings, self-consumption, smart charging
The integration of photovoltaic (PV) and electric vehicle (EV) charging in residential buildings has increased in recent years. At high latitudes, both pose new challenges to the residential power systems due to the negative correlation between household load and PV power production and the increase in household peak load by EV charging. EV smart charging schemes can be an option to overcome these challenges. This paper presents a distributed and a centralized EV smart charging scheme for residential buildings based on installed photovoltaic (PV) power output and household electricity consumption. The proposed smart charging schemes are designed to determine the optimal EV charging schedules with the objective to minimize the net load variability or to flatten the net load profile. Minimizing the net load variability implies both increasing the PV self-consumption and reducing the peak loads. The charging scheduling problems are formulated and solved with quadratic programming approach... [more]

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: carbon dioxide emissions, carbon monoxide emissions, cold start, hydrocarbon emissions, light duty gasoline vehicle, nitrogen oxides emissions, portable emission measurement system
Compared to comparably sized conventional light duty gasoline vehicles (CLDGVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) may offer benefits of improved energy economy, reduced emissions, and the flexibility to use electricity as an energy source. PHEVs operate in either charge depleting (CD) or charge sustaining (CS) mode; the engine has the ability to turn on and off; and the engine can have multiple cold starts. A method is demonstrated for quantifying the real-world activity, energy use, and emissions of PHEVs, taking into account these operational characteristics and differences in electricity generation resource mix. A 2013 Toyota Prius plug-in was measured using a portable emission measurement system. Adaptive Droop Gain-Based Event-Triggered Consensus Reactive Power Sharing in Microgrids
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: adaptive droop gain, communication, consensus control, ETCP, microgrid, reactive power sharing
This paper proposes an adaptive droop gain-based consensus approach for reactive power sharing in microgrids (MGs) with the event triggered communication protocol (ETCP). A multi-agent system-based network is constructed to establish the communication with distributed generators (DGs) in MGs. An ETCP is proposed to reduce the communication among agents to save resources and improve system reliability, as the communication is only needed when the event triggered condition is fulfilled. A stability analysis is conducted to guarantee the existence of the equilibrium point and the freeness of the Zeno solution. Moreover, an adaptive droop gain is designed to reduce the impact of imbalanced feeder impedances. Four case studies are conducted to verify the effectiveness and performance of the proposed method. The simulation results show that the ETCP-based approach is capable of achieving power sharing consensus, communication reduction and shifting the information exchange mode based on the... [more]

The Influence of the Injected Water on the Underground Coalbed Methane Extraction
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, intrinsic permeability, methane adsorption, permeability evolution, relative permeability, water saturation
The increasing demand on coal production has led to the gradually increase of mining depth and more high methane mines, which bring difficulties in terms of coalbed methane (CBM) extraction. Hydraulic fracturing is widely applied to improve the production of CBM, control mine gas, and prevent gas outbursts. It improves coal bed permeability and accelerate desorption and migration of CBM. Even though the impacts of hydraulic fracturing treatment on the coal reservoirs are rare, negative effects could not be totally ignored. To defend this defect, the presented work aims to study the influence of water filtration on coal body deformation and permeability evolution. For this purpose, a simulation based finite element method was developed to build a solid-fluid coupled two-phase flow model using commercial software (COMSOL Multiphysics 5.4). The model was verified using production data from a long strike borehole from Wangpo coal mine in Shanxi Province, China. Several simulation scenarios... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Bayesian updating, Machine Learning, maintenance, reliability, wind turbine
Operation and maintenance (O&M) costs, and associated uncertainty, for wind turbines (WTs) is a significant burden for wind farm operators. Many wind turbine failures are unpredictable while causing loss of energy production, and may also cause loss of asset. This study utilized 753 O&M event data from 21 wind turbines operating in Germany, to improve the prediction of failure frequency and associated costs. We applied Bayesian updating to predict wind turbine failure frequency and time-to-repair (TTR), in conjunction to machine learning techniques for assessing costs associated with failures. We found that time-to-failure (TTF), time-to-repair and the cost of failures depend on operational and environmental conditions. High elevation (>100 m) of the wind turbine installation was found to increase both the probability of failures and probability of delayed repairs. Furthermore, it was determined that direct-drive turbines are more favorable at locations with high capacity factor (more... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Australia, bioenergy, biomass energy potential, emission, forest biomass
The use of forest biomass for bioenergy in Australia represents only 1% of total energy production but is being recognized for having the potential to deliver low-cost and low-emission, renewable energy solutions. This review addresses the potential of forest biomass for bioenergy production in Australia relative to the amount of biomass energy measures available for production, harvest and transport, conversion, distribution and emission. Thirty-Five Australian studies on forest biomass for bioenergy are reviewed and categorized under five hierarchical terms delimiting the level of assessment on the biomass potential. Most of these studies assess the amount of biomass at a production level using measures such as the allometric volume equation and form factor assumptions linked to forest inventory data or applied in-field weighing of samples to predict the theoretical potential of forest biomass across an area or region. Noise Immunity Analysis and Improvement of dq Frame Based Open-Loop Phase Detection Scheme
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coordinate transformation, noise immunity, open-loop phase detection (OPD), voltage phase
To improve the noise immunity of a dq frame based open-loop phase detection (OPD) under high-frequency noise grid conditions, this paper develops a detailed model to quantitatively evaluate the phase detection error and noise immunity. It is found that the OPD behaves differently in terms of noise immunity when the dq frame is in different angle positions with the grid voltage. When the grid voltage coincides with the d axis, the high-frequency noise has the smallest impact on the phase detection accuracy, and the OPD thus has the strongest noise immunity. Inspired by this conclusion, an improved OPD algorithm is proposed in this paper, which can effectively reduce the phase detection error by fine-tuning the rotation angle of the dq frame to ensure that the angle between the voltage vector and d axis is always close to 0. The improved OPD algorithm has a fast and precise character to detect the phase information with less error and is flexible for application. Under heavy noise grid c... [more]

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: HVDC, maintenance, missing energy export, offshore wind energy, transmission system, voltage source converter (VSC)
For the grid connection of offshore wind farms today, in many cases a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) connection to the shore is implemented. The scheduled maintenance of the offshore and onshore HVDC stations makes up a significant part of the operational costs of the connected wind farms. The main factor for the maintenance cost is the lost income from the missing energy yield (indirect maintenance costs). In this study, we show an in-depth analysis of the used components, maintenance cycles, maintenance work for the on- and offshore station, and the risks assigned in prolonging the maintenance cycle of the modular multilevel converter (MMC). In addition, we investigate the potential to shift the start date of the maintenance work, based on a forecast of the energy generation. Our findings indicate that an optimized maintenance design with respect to the maintenance behavior of an HVDC energy export system can decrease the maintenance-related energy losses (indirect maintenance co... Non-Contact Measurement and Analysis of Trapped Charge Decay Rates for Cable Line Switching Transients

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cable, field mill, overvoltage, sheath voltage limiter, SVL, transient, trapped charge
During reclosure of 275 kV cable circuits used for voltage control, excessive overvoltages were observed on the network. Such events cause onerous and costly failures. Transient simulations have shown that the normal voltage on its own cannot generate such excessive switching overvoltages. Initial investigations by the network operator pointed towards trapped charge on the unearthed as the cause of the failures. Measurement of these trapped charge voltages and their slow decay without interfering with the charge has, to the author’s knowledge, not been done before in an operational substation. This work introduces a technique to measure trapped charge at a 275 kV substation using the Electrostatic Field Mill. Since the electric field is a proxy measurement of surface voltage, field mills can also be used to measure voltage. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: centrifugal pump, organic Rankine cycle (ORC), plunger pump, pressure drop, system generating efficiency, temperature utilization rate
Based on a 10-kW organic Rankine cycle (ORC) experimental prototype, the system behaviors using a plunger pump and centrifugal pump have been investigated. The heat input is in the range of 45 kW to 82 kW. The temperature utilization rate is defined to appraise heat source utilization. The detailed components’ behaviors with the varying heat input are discussed, while the system generating efficiency is examined. The exergy destruction for the four components is addressed finally. Results indicated that the centrifugal pump owns a relatively higher mass flow rate and pump isentropic efficiency, but more power consumption than the plunger pump. The evaporator pressure drops are in the range of 0.45−0.65 bar, demonstrating that the pressure drop should be considered for the ORC simulation. The electrical power has a small difference using a plunger pump and a centrifugal pump, indicating that the electric power is insensitive on the pump types. Subject: Information Management
Keywords: acoustic emission, condition monitoring, diagnosing, drillship, mud pumps, valve damage
Although mud pumps are vital components of a drilling rig, their failures are frequent. The identification of technical condition of these high-pressure piston pumps is difficult. There are no reliable criteria for the assessment of mud pump condition. In this paper, faults of the pump valve module are identified by means of acoustic emission (AE) signals. The characteristics of these signals are extracted by wavelet packet signal processing. This method has been verified by experiments conducted on a NOV (National Oilwell Varco) -made triplex 14-P-220 mud pump (mounted in the drillship). The results show that the wavelet packet signal processing method can effectively extract the frequency band energy eigenvalues of the signals. Besides, some operational problems associated with high pressure piston mud pumps are presented. A non-invasive method for diagnosing the technical condition of such pumps is being developed at the Maritime University of Szczecin.

Keywords: FA, fly-ash-based geopolymer, geopolymer elasticity, GGBFS, mechanical properties, UPV
Geopolymers are considered to alternatives to Portland cement, providing an opportunity to exploit aluminosilicate wastes or co-products with promising performances in the construction sector. This research is aimed at investigating the strength of fly-ash-geopolymers of different ages. The effect of granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) as a partial replacement of fly ash (FA) on the tensile (ft) and compressive strength (fc), as well as the modulus of elasticity, is investigated. The main advantage of the developed geopolymer mixes containing GGBFS is their ability to set and harden at room temperature with no need for heating to obtain binding properties, reducing the energy consumption of their production processes. This procedure presents a huge advantage over binders requiring heat curing, constituting a significant energy savings and reduction of CO2 emissions. It is found that the development of strength strongly depends on the ratio of fly-ash to granulated blast furnace slag.... [more]
