Fernando Yanine, Antonio Sánchez-Squella, Aldo Barrueto, Antonio Parejo, Felisa Cordova, Hans Rother.
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed power generation, electric tariffs, electric utility, energy homeostasis, renewable energy sources (RES) integration, smart grid transformation
In this paper a novel model is being proposed and considered by ENEL—the largest electric utility in Chile—and analyzed thoroughly, whereby electric power control and energy management for a 60-apartments’ residential building is presented as an example of the utility’s green energy program, part of its Smart Grid Transformation plan to install grid-tied distributed generation (DG) systems, namely microgrids, with solar generation and energy storage in Santiago, Chile. The particular tariffs scheme analysis shown is part of the overall projected tentative benefits of adopting the new scheme, which will require the utility’s customers to adapt their consumption behavior to the limited supply of renewable energy by changing energy consumption habits and schedules in a way that maximizes the capacity and efficiency of the grid-tied microgrid with energy storage. The change in behavior entails rescheduling power consumption to hours where the energy supply capacity in the DG system is high... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: efficiency, gray wolf optimization method, line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor, metaheuritsic algorithm, optimal design
The paper presents the optimization method and computer software for the design of a low-power line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM). The in-house-developed computer software was created with two independent modules: (a) the optimization procedure and (b) the numerical model of the motor. The optimization procedure used was a metaheuristic optimization method based on the gray wolf algorithm. Four design variables linked to the rotor structure were selected. The optimization process was performed from the rotor of a low-power induction motor (IM). The prototype of the motor (LSPMSM) was then built. The experimental measurements were performed for base the IM and optimized LSPMSM. The results of the measurements were compared for both motors. The experimental results confirmed the better performance of the designed motor in comparison to the induction motor.
A New Concept and a Test of a Bubble Pump System for Passive Heat Transport from Solar Collectors
Daniel Chludziński, Michał Duda.
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: anti-gravity, bubble pump, passive heat transport, solar collector, thermosiphon
Heat is usually transported by hydraulic circuits where the working medium is circulated by an electric pump. Heat can also be transferred by natural convection in passive systems. Passive systems where heat is transported downward have also been described and studied in the literature. These types of devices are referred to as reverse thermosiphons. However, systems of the type are not widely applied in practice due to the problems associated with the selection of the optimal working medium. In water-based thermosiphons, negative pressure is produced when water temperature falls below 100 °C, and non-condensable gas can enter the system. These problems are not encountered in systems where the working medium has a low boiling point. However, liquids with a low boiling point can be explosive, expensive, and harmful to the environment. The solution proposed in this paper combines the advantages of water and a liquid with a low boiling point. The described system relies on water as the he... [more]

Vasileios Papadopoulos, Jos Knockaert, Chris Develder, Jan Desmet.
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery storage, lithium-ion, peak demand pricing, peak shaving, tariff structure
The renewable energy transition has introduced new electricity tariff structures. With the increased penetration of photovoltaic and wind power systems, users are being charged more for their peak demand. Consequently, peak shaving has gained attention in recent years. In this paper, we investigated the potential of peak shaving through battery storage. The analyzed system comprises a battery, a load and the grid but no renewable energy sources. The study is based on 40 load profiles of low-voltage users, located in Belgium, for the period 1 January 2014, 00:00−31 December 2016, 23:45, at 15 min resolution, with peak demand pricing. For each user, we studied the peak load reduction achievable by batteries of varying energy capacities (kWh), ranging from 0.1 to 10 times the mean power (kW). The results show that for 75% of the users, the peak reduction stays below 44% when the battery capacity is 10 times the mean power. Furthermore, for 75% of the users the battery remains idle for at... [more]

Toru Yamamoto, Hirofumi Hayama, Takao Hayashi.
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Coefficient of Performance, cooling tower, cooling water temperature, energy consumption, equipment master planning, outside air specific enthalpy, partial load, water-cooled chiller
The Coefficient of Performance of an ordinary water-cooled chiller is presented as a relationship with the chiller load factor and cooling water temperature. However, the cooling water temperature fluctuates according to the processed heat of the cooling tower originating in the cooling energy of the chiller and to the outside temperature and humidity. It is therefore difficult to obtain the cooling water temperature under the processed-heat and weather conditions at the time of evaluation. This, in turn, makes it difficult to determine the Coefficient of Performance of a water-cooled chiller at the evaluation time. In this research, we formulated the Coefficient of Performance of a water-cooled chiller as a relationship with the chiller load factor and specific enthalpy of outside air. Specifically, we used the Number of Transfer Units (NTU) model of a cooling tower to calculate the cooling water temperature corresponding to the cooling-tower load factor targeting a counterflow coolin... Andrzej Popenda, Marek Lis, Marcjan Nowak, Krzysztof Blecharz.
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric drive, electric transmission line, electrical and mechanical similarities, equivalent circuit, kinematic structure, mathematical modelling, transmission shaft
In the paper, the kinematic structure of the transmission shaft between the driving motor and the working mechanism is studied. The analysis is based on electrical and mechanical similarities. The equivalent circuits, typical for electrical systems, are defined for the transmission shaft concerned. Modelling of the transmission shaft based on a formal analogy between the transmission shaft and the electric transmission line is also proposed. The results of a computer simulation and experimental test are presented. The results confirm the high conformity of the proposed mathematical model with the physical object.

Keywords: direct borohydride fuel cell, phosphated titanium oxide, poly (vinyl alcohol), polymer electrolyte membrane, sulfated titanium oxide nanotubes
Organic−inorganic nanocomposite membranes for potential application in direct borohydride fuel cells (DBFCs) are formulated from sulfonated poly(vinyl alcohol) (SPVA) with the incorporation of (PO4-TiO2) and (SO4-TiO2) nanotubes as doping agents. The functionalization of PVA to SPVA was done by using a 4-sulfophthalic acid as an ionic crosslinker and sulfonating agent. Morphological and structural characterization by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the successful synthesis of the doping agents and their incorporation into the polymer. The influence of PO4-TiO2 and SO4-TiO2 doping and their content on the physicochemical properties of the nanocomposite membranes was evaluated. Swelling degree and water uptake gradually reduced to 7% and 13%, respectively, with increasing doping agent... [more]
Can One Reinforce Investments in Renewable Energy Stock Indices with the ESG Index?
Guizhou Liu, Shigeyuki Hamori.
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: copula, ESG, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, value-at-risk
Studies on the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) index have become increasingly important since the ESG index offers attractive characteristics, such as environmental friendliness. Scholars and institutional investors are evaluating if investment in the ESG index can positively change current portfolios. It is crucial that institutional investors seek related assets to diversify their investments when such investors create funds in the renewable energy sector, which is highly related to environmental issues. The ESG index has proven to be a good investment choice, but we are not aware of its performance when combined with renewable energy securities. To uncover this nature, we investigate the dependence structure of the ESG index and four renewable energy indices with constant and time-varying copula models and evaluate the potential performance of using different ratios of the ESG index in the portfolio. Criteria such as risk-adjusted return, standard deviation, and conditio... [more]

Keywords: and building energy retrofits, energy consumption, Energy Efficiency, energy simulation analysis, hot-humid climate zone, single-family buildings
Targeting existing residential buildings for retrofit improvement presents significant prospects for global reduction of energy-usage and carbon footprints. Energy consumption of the existing single-family building in the hot-humid climate zone needs to be targeted for improvement due to their potential energy-savings and sizeable market share. This paper proposes and evaluates energy savings and cost-effectiveness of a whole building retrofit package for single-family residential buildings built between 1950 and 1970. The study outlined a survey conducted using the clustering data mining technique on Florida Single-Family Residential (SFR) homes to determine the essence of the building envelope, patterns of construction, and Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems. The evaluation of the energy efficiency measures (EEMs) effectiveness is performed utilizing Autodesk Revit and a Six-Step modeled framework. This framework consists of baseline model development, validati... [more]
Reliability Evaluation for Aviation Electric Power System in Consideration of Uncertainty
Yao Wang, Xinqin Gao, Yuanfeng Cai, Mingshun Yang, Shujuan Li, Yan Li.
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aviation electric power system (AEPS), failure rate, minimal path set, reliability, uncertainty
With the rapid development of more electric aircraft (MEA) in recent years, the aviation electric power system (AEPS) has played an increasingly important role in safe flight. However, as a highly reliable system, because of its complicated flight conditions and architecture, it often proves significant uncertainty in its failure occurrence and consequence. Thus, more and more stakeholders, e.g., passengers, aviation administration departments, are dissatisfied with the traditional system reliability analysis, in which failure uncertainty is not considered and system reliability probability is a constant value at a given time. To overcome this disadvantage, we propose a new methodology in the AEPS reliability evaluation. First, we perform a random sampling from the probability distributions of components’ failure rates and compute the system reliability at each sample point; after that, we use variance, confidence interval, and probability density function to quantify the uncertainty o... March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: air cavity, air-conditioner, building walls, mold growth risks, summer condensation
Mold growth poses a high risk to a large number of existing buildings and their users. Air leakage through the air cavities of the building walls, herein gaps between walls and air conditioner pipes penetrating the walls, may increase the risks of interstitial condensation, mold growth and other moisture-related problems. In order to quantify the mold growth risks due to air leakage through air cavity, an office room in a historical masonry building in Nanjing, China, was selected, and its indoor environment has been studied. Fungi colonization can be seen on the surface of air conditioner pipes in the interior side near air cavity of the wall. Hygrothermometers and thermocouples logged interior and exterior temperature and relative humidity from June 2018 to January 2020. The measured data show that in summer the outdoor humidity remained much higher than that of the room, while the temperature near the air cavity stays lower than those of the other parts in the room. Hot and humid ou... [more]

Yuhan Zhang, Guiping Du, Jiajian Li, Yanxiong Lei.
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fast transient time, fixed switching frequency, predictive control, robustness
In this paper, a hybrid control strategy for power converters, based on improved deadbeat control (DBC) and improved finite control set model predictive control (MPC), is proposed. The presented control strategy employs a switched method to achieve a fixed switching frequency while maintaining a fast transient time. Moreover, the proposal incorporates error correction to achieve superior robustness. A prototype of a single-phase voltage source rectifier is established to verify the performance of the proposal. The comparative results with conventional MPC are given and illustrate the merits of the proposed control method.

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: choke, Eddy current losses, FEM method, laminated transformer sheet, Laplace’s transformation
The following article presents a computation procedure that enables us to simulate the dynamic states of electric machines with a laminated magnetic core, with direct consideration of the eddy current losses. The presented approach enables a significant reduction of the simulation process computational complexity. The verification of the obtained data correctness is based on a detailed balance of energy and power in the investigated system. The correctness of the obtained results was also confirmed by comparing them with the results included in norms that describe the losses in laminated sheets. The presented approach is based on expressing the equivalent permeability of transformer metal sheets by using RC or RL circuits. The impedances of these circuits are treated as the transmittance of Infinite Impulse Response filters (IIR) of the Laplace s variable. In this form they are implemented in direct calculations of the dynamics of electric machines based on field-circuital models, usin... [more]
Practical Implementation of Adaptive SRF-PLL for Three-Phase Inverters Based on Sensitivity Function and Real-Time Grid-Impedance Measurements
Roni Luhtala, Henrik Alenius, Tomi Roinila.
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control systems, impedance measurement, phase locked loops, power electronics, stability analysis, system identification
Rapidly increasing demand for renewable energy has created a need for the photovoltaic and wind farms to be placed in various locations that have diverse and possibly time-variant grid conditions. A mismatch between the grid impedance and output admittance of an inverter causes impedance-based stability issues, which appear as power quality problems and poor transient performance. Grid synchronization with phase-locked loop (PLL) introduces a negative-resistance-like behavior to inverter output admittance. High control bandwidth of the PLL makes the system sensitive to impedance-based stability issues when the inverter is connected to a weak grid that has high impedance. However, very conservative tunings lead to overly damped dynamic responses in strong grids, where the control performance and power quality can be improved by applying higher PLL control bandwidths. Continuous evaluation of grid conditions makes it possible to avoid the risk of instability and poor dynamic responses, a... [more]

Xin Wang, Tongjun Chen, Hui Xu.
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep belief network, dimensional reduction, prediction, seismic attribute, TDC, thickness
Thickness of tectonically deformed coal (TDC) has positive correlations with the susceptible gas outbursts in coal mines. To predict the TDC thickness of the coalbed, we proposed a prediction method using seismic attributes based on the deep belief network (DBN) and dimensionality reduction. Firstly, we built a DBN prediction model using the extracted attributes from a synthetic seismic section. Next, we transformed the possibly correlated seismic attributes into principal components through principal components analysis. Then, we compared the true TDC thickness with the predicted TDC thicknesses to evaluate the prediction accuracy of different models, i.e., a DBN model, a support vector machine model, and an extreme learning machine model. Finally, we used the DBN model to predict the TDC thickness of coalbed No. 8 in an operational coal mine based on synthetic experiments. Our studies showed that the predicted distribution of TDC thickness followed the regional characteristics of TDC... [more]

Keywords: district heating, economic optimisation, heat savings, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, strategic heat planning
This paper addresses economic aspects of heat savings in the context of strategic heat planning. The analysis uses the city of Aalborg, Denmark, as a case where municipalisation through a recent acquisition of a coal-fired cogeneration of heat and power (CHP) plant has made an update of a municipal strategic energy plan necessary. Combining datasets on buildings and insulation techniques with economic methods, we investigate how the local district heating tariff can be adapted to improve the conditions for heat savings and support the transition to lower supply temperatures in line with the requirements of future fourth generation district heating systems. The paper concludes that implementing a fully variable heat tariff scheme improves the financial incentive for heat savings, while also making the system development less vulnerable to fluctuations and shortages in capital markets. The paper supplements existing literature on heat savings with novelty in its approach and in its syste... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Cantera, oxidizer, synthesis gas, thermodynamic equilibrium composition, underground coal gasification
Underground coal gasification (UCG) is an in situ conversion technique that enables the production of high-calorific synthesis gas from resources that are economically not minable by conventional methods. A broad range of end-use options is available for the synthesis gas, including fuels and chemical feedstock production. Furthermore, UCG also offers a high potential for integration with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. In the present study, a stoichiometric equilibrium model, based on minimization of the Gibbs function has been used to estimate the equilibrium composition of the synthesis gas. Thereto, we further developed and applied a proven thermodynamic equilibrium model to simulate the relevant thermochemical coal conversion processes (pyrolysis and gasification). Our modeling approach has been validated against thermodynamic models, laboratory gasification experiments and UCG field trial data reported in the literature. The synthesis gas co... [more]

Keywords: deformable models, electric energy demand, functional statistics, Kalman filtering, shape-invariant model
The operation of buildings is linked to approximately 36% of the global energy consumption, 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change. Assessing the energy consumption and efficiency of buildings is a complex task addressed by a variety of methods. Building energy modeling is among the dominant methodologies in evaluating the energy efficiency of buildings commonly applied for evaluating design and renovation energy efficiency measures. Although building energy modeling is a valuable tool, it is rarely the case that simulation results are assessed against the building’s actual energy performance. In this context, the simulation results of the HVAC energy consumption in the case of a smart industrial near-zero energy building are used to explore areas of uncertainty and deviation of the building energy model against measured data. Initial model results are improved based on a trial and error approach to minimize deviation based on key identified parameters. In addition, a nove... [more]

Keywords: chemical kinetic, F–T surrogate model, skeletal mechanism
Fischer−Tropsch (F−T) fuel, synthesized from coal-to-liquid (CTL), is an alternative fuel with clean and efficient characteristics. In this study, a surrogate fuel model was developed, including n-dodecane (n-C12H26) and iso-octane (i-C8H18), which represents the n-alkane and iso-alkane in F−T fuel synthesized from CTL, respectively. The proportions of the components in the surrogate fuel are determined by the characteristics of the practical fuel, including cetane number (CN), C/H ration and component composition. For the establishment of the skeletal mechanism model, firstly, based on a two-step direct relationship graph (DRG) and the computational singular perturbation (CSP) importance index method, a reduced model of n-dodecane was developed involving 159 species and 399 reactions, while the detailed n-dodecane mechanism consists of 1279 species and 5056 reactions. Then, the n-dodecane skeletal mechanism was constructed based on a decoupling methodology, involving the skeletal C12... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon dioxide (CO2), chemical properties, mechanical properties, petrophysical properties, physico-chemical interaction, shale, sorption
In carbon storage activities, and in shale oil and gas extraction (SOGE) with carbon dioxide (CO2) as stimulation fluid, CO2 comes into contact with shale rock and its pore fluid. As a reactive fluid, the injected CO2 displays a large potential to modify the shale’s chemical, physical, and mechanical properties, which need to be well studied and documented. The state of the art on shale−CO2 interactions published in several review articles does not exhaust all aspects of these interactions, such as changes in the mechanical, petrophysical, or petrochemical properties of shales. This review paper presents a characterization of shale rocks and reviews their possible interaction mechanisms with different phases of CO2. The effects of these interactions on petrophysical, chemical and mechanical properties are highlighted. In addition, a novel experimental approach is presented, developed and used by our team to investigate mechanical properties by exposing shale to different saturation flu... [more]

Keywords: ejector structure, entrainment ratio, spray characteristics, two-phase ejectors, visualization
A two-phase flow ejector is an important part of a water mist fire suppression system, and these devices have become a popular research topic in recent years. This paper proposes a supersonic ejector that aims to improve the efficiency of water mist fire suppression systems. The effects of ejector geometric parameters on the entrainment ratio (ER) were explored. The effects of primary flow pressure (PP) on the mixing process and flow phenomena were studied by a high-speed camera. The experimental results show that the ER first increases and then decreases with increasing PP. ER increases with increasing ejector area ratio (AR). The PP corresponding to the maximum ER of ejectors with a different nozzle exit position (NXP) is 3.6 bar. The ejector with an NXP of +1 and AR of 6 demonstrate the best performance, and the ER of this ejector reaches 36.29. The spray half-cone angle of the ejector increases with increasing ER, reaching a maximum value of 7.07°. The unstable atomization half-con... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: alternative insulator, thermal insulation material, vacuum insulation panel
The need for the development of new, advanced building materials increases every year, especially due to the necessary diminution of energy performance for building structures and for building production itself (including the production of building materials). Along with the energy performance problems in construction, the issue of CO2 emission associated with building and the production of building materials is also important. In the field of advanced thermal insulation materials, vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) give the best results. However, their high-energy performance and material consumption present a problem. This work represents an initial part of the development of alternative insulators, based on agricultural and textile industry waste usable in the production of VIP. This article recapitulates basic knowledge regarding key thermal insulation properties of developed insulators and their fire reactions, which impact possible usage in building structures.

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, gyrotron resonator, hydraulic test, mini-channels, pressure drop, Raschig rings
The design and manufacturing of different full-size mock-ups of the resonance cavity of gyrotrons, relevant for fusion applications, were performed according to two different cooling strategies. The first one relies on mini-channels, which are very promising in the direction of increasing the heat transfer in the heavily loaded cavity, but which could face an excessively large pressure drop, while the second one adopts the solution of Raschig rings, already successfully used in European operating gyrotrons. The mock-ups, manufactured with conventional techniques, were hydraulically characterized at the Thales premises, using water at room temperature. The measured pressure drop data were used to validate the corresponding numerical computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, developed with the commercial software STAR-CCM+ (Siemens PLM Software, Plano TX, U.S.A.) and resulting in excellent agreement with the test results.
