April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: concentrating photovoltaics CPV, end-of-life CPV, life cycle assessment LCA, photovoltaics
Photovoltaic systems represent a leading part of the market in the renewable energies sector. Contemporary technology offers possibilities to improve systems converting sun energy, especially for the efficiency of modules. The paper focuses on current concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) technologies, presenting data for solar cells and modules working under lab conditions as well as in a real environment. In this paper, we consider up-to-date solutions for two types of concentrating photovoltaic systems: high-concentration photovoltaics (HCPV) and low-concentration photovoltaics (LCPV). The current status of CPV solar modules was complemented by the preliminary results of new hybrid photovoltaic technology achieving records in efficiency. Compared to traditional Si-PV panels, CPV modules achieve greater conversion efficiency as a result of the concentrator optics applied. Specific CPV technologies were described in terms of efficiency, new approaches of a multijunction solar cell, a tracki... [more]

Households Behaviour towards Sustainable Energy Management in Poland—The Homo Energeticus Concept as a New Behaviour Pattern in Sustainable Economics
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: behaviour model, energy management, households, pattern, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sustainable economics
The presented article belongs to the research school of sustainable development economics as a relatively new science discipline within the broader area of heterodox economics. This paper is based on literature studies of homo concepts in economics, sociology and psychology. It identifies a research gap in sustainable economics, especially in sustainable energy management, formulating a novel concept of an economic man involved in energy management called homo energeticus. Homo energeticus concept is verified by empirical evidence at a local level-quantitative research conducted on a sample of 500 households in Lower Silesia region in Poland. The research’s first objective is to build the original author’s methodology on which the shift patterns from homo oeconomicus (neoclassical economics) to homo sustinens (sustainable economics) may be presented and may be used by scientists worldwide. After preparing a method for identifying concept, the second goal is to identify and describe the... [more]

Investigations of Exhaust Emissions from Rail Machinery during Track Maintenance Operations
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion engines, exhaust emissions, PEMS, rail machinery, real driving emission
The paper presents the investigations of exhaust emissions under actual operation of two rail vehicles: a track geometry vehicle and a clearance vehicle. The environmental assessment of this type of objects is difficult due to the necessity of adapting the measurement equipment and meeting the safety requirements during the tests (particularly regarding the distance from the overhead electrical lines). The authors have proposed and developed a unique research methodology, based on which a detailed exhaust emissions analysis (CO, HC, NOx, and PM) was carried out. The complex assessment included the unit and on-track exhaust emissions. In the analyses, the authors also included the operating conditions of the powertrains of the tested machinery. The obtained environmental indexes were referred to the homologation standards, according to which the vehicles were approved for operation. Due to the nature of operation of the tested vehicles, the authors carried out a comprehensive environmen... [more]

Analysis and Control of Battery Energy Storage System Based on Hybrid Active Third-Harmonic Current Injection Converter
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active damping, battery energy storage system, high efficiency, third-harmonic current injection
This paper applies the emerging hybrid active third-harmonic current injection converter (H3C) to the battery energy storage system (BESS), forming a novel H3C-BESS structure. Compared with the commonly used two-stage VSC-BESS, the proposed H3C-BESS has the capability to reduce the passive components and switching losses. The operation principle of the H3C-BESS is analyzed and the mathematical model is derived. The closed-loop control strategy and controller design are proposed for different operation modes of the system, which include the battery current/voltage control and the injected harmonic current control. In particular, active damping control is realized through the grid current control, which could suppress the LC-filter resonance without the need of passive damping resistors. Simulation results show that the proposed topology and its control strategy have fast dynamic response, with a setup time of less than 4 ms. In addition, the total harmonic distortions of battery current... [more]

Optimal Battery Energy Storage Dispatch Strategy for Small-Scale Isolated Hybrid Renewable Energy System with Different Load Profile Patterns
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage (BES), combined dispatch (CD), cycle charging (CC), hybrid power generation, isolated grid, load following (LF), optimal BES discharge (OBD), photovoltaic (PV)
Most inhabited islands in Indonesia are powered by expensively known diesel generators and isolated from the primary grid due to either geographical or economic reasons. Meanwhile, the diesel generator can be combined with a photovoltaic (PV) system and Battery Energy Storage (BES) system to form a hybrid power generation system to reduce the energy cost and increase renewable energy penetration. For this, proper sizing of each power generation component is required, one of which is influenced by the applied control strategy. This paper proposes an optimal BES dispatch (OBD) control strategy that optimizes the power generation components’ sizing. The method examines the shortcomings of the other popular control strategies, such as load following, cycle charging, or combination. The optimization objectives are to minimize the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) and maximize the renewable energy (RE) penetration, which can be achieved by prioritizing the BES to supply the load over other ava... Investigation of Compact Hollow-Anode Discharge Source for Copper Thin Films by Sputtering Processes
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: copper thin films, hollow anode discharge source, uniform density discharge model
A compact hollow-anode discharge (HAD) source with a size of 60 mm in radius and 70 mm in length has been developed to stably generate plasma jets for various sputtering processes in semiconductor and display fabrications. A developed HAD plasma source has been investigated by cylindrical electric probes, and the experimental results were compared to the values of numerical calculations. A uniform density discharge model with a geometry factor was proposed to estimate the profiles of plasma parameters. Owing to the difference of absolute magnitude, even with the similar trend of spatial variation, plasma parameters such as electron temperature (Te) and plasma density (ne) measured at z = 3 cm have been calibrated by the values of numerical calculations at the nozzle entrance (z = 0 cm, at the throat of the jet), and the calibration factors for Te and n0 have been deduced by comparing the experimental values to numerical calculations. These are to be explained by the decay mechanism alo... [more]

Efficient Dimensionality Reduction Methods in Reservoir History Matching
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: data assimilation, dimensionality reduction, history matching, reservoir simulation, uncertainty quantification
Production forecasting is the basis for decision making in the oil and gas industry, and can be quite challenging, especially in terms of complex geological modeling of the subsurface. To help solve this problem, assisted history matching built on ensemble-based analysis such as the ensemble smoother and ensemble Kalman filter is useful in estimating models that preserve geological realism and have predictive capabilities. These methods tend, however, to be computationally demanding, as they require a large ensemble size for stable convergence. In this paper, we propose a novel method of uncertainty quantification and reservoir model calibration with much-reduced computation time. This approach is based on a sequential combination of nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques: t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding or the Gaussian process latent variable model and clustering K-means, along with the data assimilation method ensemble smoother with multiple data assimilation. April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: agricultural carbon emissions, China, food consumption prices, prices of agricultural production factors
China is a large agricultural country with a high level of agricultural carbon emissions. Whether market prices can be used in agricultural production as a means of agricultural carbon emissions reduction is of great significance to improve the allocation of agricultural production factors and expand large-scale production. This paper applies an autoregressive distributed lag−pooled mean group(ARDL−PMG) model to evaluate the relationship between agricultural production factor prices, food consumption prices, and agricultural carbon emissions, using Chinese provincial panel data from 1994 to 2018. The results show that agricultural carbon emissions and agricultural production factor prices show environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) characteristics; agricultural carbon emissions and food prices show a U-shaped curve; and agricultural production factors are positively correlated with food price in both directions in the long-term. The results of Granger causality tests show that price is the... [more]

Software Framework for Testing of Automated Driving Systems in the Traffic Environment of Vissim
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: automated driving, scenario-based testing, software framework
As the complexity of automated driving systemss (ADSs) with automation levels above level 3 is rising, virtual testing for such systems is inevitable and necessary. The complexity of testing these levels lies in the modeling and calculation demands for the virtual environment, which consists of roads, traffic, static and dynamic objects, as well as the modeling of the car itself. An essential part of the safety and performance analysis of ADSs is the modeling and consideration of dynamic road traffic participants. There are multiple forms of traffic flow simulation software (TFSS), which are used to reproduce realistic traffic behavior and are integrated directly or over interfaces with vehicle simulation software environments. In this paper we focus on the TFSS from PTV Vissim in a co-simulation framework which combines Vissim and CarMaker. As it is a commonly used software in industry and research, it also provides complex driver models and interfaces to manipulate and develop custom... [more]

Energy Efficiency Improvement Solutions for Supermarkets by Low-E Glass Door and Digital Semi-Hermetic Compressor
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: digital compressor, Energy Efficiency, low-E
This research presents an energy efficiency improvement solution for supermarkets with the use of low-E glass doors for open refrigerators and a digital semi-hermetic compressor to fix the speed of semi-hermetic compressors. The impact of a door’s installation causes its load to be reduced by 40%, and the compressor shuts down frequently, which decreases its lifetime. In order to ensure that energy-saving solutions do not affect maintenance costs, the installation of a digital semi-hermetic compressor is proposed to lower costs and save energy. Our economic results from tests carried out at a 3000 square meter supermarket, which was open from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. and in which we installed 82 doors on 15 open refrigerators, showed a 1.1-year payback period with an energy saving rate of 192,220 kWh/year for store No.1 (R22) and in which we installed 80 doors on 15 open refrigerators, showed a 1.4-year payback period with an energy saving rate of 171,185 kWh/year for store No.2 (R404A)... Efficient Operation Method of Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage System Using Demand Response
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aquifer thermal energy storage system, demand response, efficient operation method, Simulation, water heat pump
The mass introduction of renewable energy is essential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. We examined an operation method that combines the surplus energy of photovoltaic power generation using demand response (DR), which recognizes the balance between power supply and demand, with an aquifer heat storage system. In the case that predicts the occurrence of DR and performs DR storage and heat dissipation operation, the result was an operation that can suppress daytime power consumption without increasing total power consumption. Case 1-2, which performs nighttime heat storage operation for about 6 h, has become an operation that suppresses daytime power consumption by more than 60%. Furthermore, the increase in total power consumption was suppressed by combining DR heat storage operation. The long night heat storage operation did not use up the heat storage amount. Therefore, it is recommended to the heat storage operation at night as much as possible before DR occurs. In the target ar... [more]

A New Mechanical-Hydrodynamic Safety Factor Index for Sand Production Prediction
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: erosion, failure, FLAC3D, fluid flow, Mohr–Coulomb, numerical modelling, poroelasticity, sandstone, shear stress, wellbore stability
A new applicable safety factor index (SFI) was developed to identify the impact of mechanical stresses and hydrodynamic forces on the potential sanding of a sandstone reservoir. The SFI is calculated by a fully numerically coupled analysis of the mechanical deformation and hydrocarbon fluid flow in the sandstone formation via FLAC3D software, Itasca Consulting Group, Minneapolis, USA. Sand production is commonly ascribed to mechanical failure while the influence of hydrodynamic forces on sandstone erosion is neglected or underestimated. However, the new SFI enables the designer to quantify the impact of mechanical and hydrodynamic forces separately on the future occurrence of sanding. Quantitative comparison is a beneficial tool to choose the most appropriate layout of the wellbore and perforations. The results demonstrated that hydrodynamic forces may have a more significant effect on sand production than mechanical stresses. Furthermore, the sanding process does not necessarily comme... [more]

A Comprehensive Loss Model and Comparison of AC and DC Boost Converters
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: AC-DC power conversion, DC power transmission, DC-DC power conversion, losses, power converter
DC microgrids have become a prevalent topic in research in part due to the expected superior efficiency of DC/DC converters compared to their AC/DC counterparts. Although numerous side-by-side analyses have quantified the efficiency benefits of DC power distribution, these studies all modeled converter loss based on product data that varied in component quality and operating voltage. To establish a fair efficiency comparison, this work derives a formulaic loss model of a DC/DC and an AC/DC PFC boost converter. These converters are modeled with identical components and an equivalent input and output voltage. Simulated designs with real components show AC/DC boost converters between 100 W to 500 W having up to 2.5 times more loss than DC/DC boost converters. Although boost converters represent a fraction of electronics in buildings, these loss models can eventually work toward establishing a comprehensive model-based full-building analysis.

Modern distribution mechanisms within the smart grid paradigm are considered both reliable in nature and interconnected in topology. In this paper, a multiple-criteria-based sustainable planning (MCSP) approach is presented that serves as a future planning tool for interconnected distribution mechanisms and aims to find a feasible solution among conflicting criteria of various genres. The proposed methodology is based on three stages. In the stage 1, a weighted voltage stability index (VSI_W) and loss minimization condition (LMC) based approach aims at optimal asset optimization (sitting and sizing). In this stage, an evaluation of alternatives (solutions) is carried out across four dimensions (technical, economic, environmental, and social) of performance metrics. The assets considered in the evaluations include distributed generation (DG), renewable DGs, i.e., photovoltaic (PV), wind, and distributed static compensator (D-STATCOM) units. Keywords: BIM, FM, infrastructure management, IoT
New technologies regarding construction, materials and facility management have led to the successful implementation of smart and more sustainable buildings. This is of special interest for the management of large and complex public buildings. However, most of these types of buildings were built in Europe during the previous century, when those technologies were still a matter of research. The appearance of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the combined use of it with other advances in Facility Management (FM) as well as Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data and others, has opened the door to the possible transformation of such type of buildings into more efficient smart buildings without very large investments. In this study, this was studied thoroughly. In addition, the advantages and possibilities were assessed on a case study performed in the Civil Engineering School at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid built in 1969. Subject: Materials
Keywords: concentrated solar energy, high-flux solar simulator, optical characterization
In the last few years, several studies have been carried out on concentrating solar thermal and thermochemical applications. These studies can be further enhanced by means of high-flux solar simulators (HFSS), since they allow the development of experimental tests under controlled irradiance conditions, regardless of sunshine. In this work, a new high-flux solar simulator, capable of reaching levels of irradiance higher than 100 W/cm2 (1000 suns), has been designed, built and characterized. This simulator is composed of 8 ellipsoidal specular reflectors, arranged face-down on a horizontal plane, in order to irradiate from the upper side any system requiring the simulation of concentrated solar radiation; differently from the HFSSs described in the scientific literature, this configuration allows the avoidance of any distortion of fluid-dynamic or convective phenomena within the system under investigation. Model Validity and Transferability Informing Behavioral Energy Policies
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: behavioral models, Energy Efficiency, model validation
A number of microeconomic choice models are currently applied to demonstrate systematic biases in energy consumer behavior. The models highlight the hidden potential of energy savings from policies that target the so-called behavioral anomalies. Nevertheless, whether these patterns are repeatable or not is not clear, because the efforts to determine the transferability or generalizability of these models are practically nonexistent. This paper uses a unique collection of empirical data from five EU countries collected within the CONSEED project to refine and develop further the standard consumer decision model, validate it for policy purposes, and elaborate on its transferability between countries. The pooled samples allow for a more reliable investigation of the relative importance of the factors influencing consumers’ attitudes and beliefs towards energy investment decisions. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: EESR protocol, end-to-end delay, Energy Efficiency, intrusion detection system, LEACH protocol, neural networks, support vector machine
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are among the most popular wireless technologies for sensor communication purposes nowadays. Usually, WSNs are developed for specific applications, either monitoring purposes or tracking purposes, for indoor or outdoor environments, where limited battery power is a main challenge. To overcome this problem, many routing protocols have been proposed through the last few years. In this paper, to achieve more efficient and reliable protocols according to current application scenarios, two well-known energy efficient protocols, i.e., Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering hierarchy (LEACH) and Energy−Efficient Sensor Routing (EESR), are redesigned considering neural networks. Specifically, to improve results in terms of energy efficiency, a Levenberg−Marquardt neural network (LMNN) is integrated. Furthermore, in order to improve the performance, a sub... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: L-LLC-BDC, mode analysis, MOSFET output capacitance, optimization design, resonant parameters
The new type of L-LLC resonant bidirectional DC-DC converter (L-LLC-BDC) has merits of high efficiency, high-power density and wide gain and power ranges, and it is suitable for energy interface between energy storage systems and DC micro grid. However, the resonances are sensitive to the parasitic parameters, which will deteriorate the efficiency. This paper investigates the intrinsic mechanism of parasitic parameters on the L-LLC-BDC operating principle and working characteristics based on the analysis of working modes and resonance tank. By taking the oscillation of parasitic parameters produced in the stage for the freewheeling stage into consideration, a parameter optimization method is proposed to reduce the resonant current oscillation while maintaining the characteristic of the natural soft switching. The experiment results not only validated the proposed parameter optimization design method, but also testified to the improvement of the efficiency through the minimization of th... [more]

Physical Simulation and Mathematical Model of the Porous Flow Characteristics of Gas-Bearing Tight Oil Reservoirs
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: gas-bearing tight oil, high-pressure mercury intrusion, microscopic, productivity prediction, resistance gradient
The separation of solution gas has great influence on the development of gas-bearing tight oil reservoirs. In this study, physical simulation and high-pressure mercury intrusion were used to establish a method for determining the porous flow resistance gradient of gas-bearing tight oil reservoirs. A mathematical model suitable for injection−production well networks is established based on the streamline integral method. The concept of pseudo-bubble point pressure is proposed. The experimental results show that as the back pressure decreases from above the bubble point pressure to below the bubble point pressure, the solution gas separates out. During this process, the porous flow resistance gradient is initially equal to the threshold pressure gradient of the oil single-phase fluid, then it becomes relatively small and stable, and finally it increases rapidly and exponentially. The lower the permeability, the higher the pseudo-bubble point pressure, and the higher the resistance gradie... [more]

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic trace element emitted from coal conversion and utilization. Samples with different coal ranks and gangue from Ningwu Coalfield are selected and investigated in this study. For understanding dependence of mercury distribution characteristics on coalification degree, Pearson regression analysis coupled with Spearman rank correlation is employed to explore the relationship between mercury and sulfur, mercury and ash in coal, and sequential chemical extraction method is adopted to recognize the Hg speciation in the samples of coal and gangue. The measured results show that Hg is positively related to total sulfur content in coal and the affinity of Hg to different sulfur forms varies with the coalification degree. Organic sulfur has the biggest impact on Hg in peat, which becomes weak with increasing the coalification degree from lignite to bituminous coal. Sulfate sulfur is only related to Hg in peat or lignite as little content in coal. However, the Pearson linear... [more]
