Advantages of Applying Large-Scale Energy Storage for Load-Generation Balancing
Dawid Chudy, Adam Leśniak
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: large-scale energy storage, load-generation balancing, power system operation, power system optimization, power system services modeling
The continuous development of energy storage (ES) technologies and their wider utilization in modern power systems are becoming more and more visible. ES is used for a variety of applications ranging from price arbitrage, voltage and frequency regulation, reserves provision, black-starting and renewable energy sources (RESs), supporting load-generation balancing. The cost of ES technologies remains high; nevertheless, future decreases are expected. As the most profitable and technically effective solutions are continuously sought, this article presents the results of the analyses which through the created unit commitment and dispatch optimization model examines the use of ES as support for load-generation balancing. The performed simulations based on various scenarios show a possibility to reduce the number of starting-up centrally dispatched generating units (CDGUs) required to satisfy the electricity demand, which results in the facilitation of load-generation balancing for transmiss... Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas quality, biogas quantity, co-digestion, electricity generation, pre-treatment, user practices
Small-scale electrical power generation (<100 kW) from biogas plants to provide off-grid electricity is of growing interest. Currently, gas engines are used to meet this demand. Alternatively, more efficient small-scale solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) can be used to enhance electricity generation from small-scale biogas plants. Most electricity generators require a constant gas supply and high gas quality in terms of absence of impurities like H2S. Therefore, to efficiently use the biogas from existing decentralized anaerobic digesters for electricity production, higher quality and stable biogas flow must be guaranteed. The installation of a biogas upgrading and buffer system could be considered; however, the cost implication could be high at a small scale as compared to locally available alternatives such as co-digestion and improved digester operation. Therefore, this study initially describes relevant literature related to feedstock pre-treatment, co-digestion and user operational... [more]
Application of Identification Reference Nets for the Preliminary Modeling on the Example of Electrical Machines

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: modeling of electric machines, reference nets, system modeling
This paper presents the use of identification reference nets (IRNs) for modeling electric power system (EPS) components using electrical machines (EMs) as an example. To perform this type of task, a database of reference nets is necessary, to which the identification net (IN) of the modeled machine is adjusted. Both the IRN and IN are obtained by using a special algorithm that allows the relevant transfer function (TF) to be converted to the rounded trajectory. This type of modeling can be a useful tool for the initial determination of parameters included in the TF associated with the EM, preceding advanced parametric identification procedures, e.g., those based on artificial intelligence methods. Two types of electrical machines are considered, i.e., the squirrel-cage asynchronous (SCA) and brushless direct-current (BLDC) machines. The solution proposed in this paper is a new approach intended for modeling EPS components.

Keywords: diesel injection, hydraulic interactions, multiple injection strategies, rate of injection
An experimental study was performed to explore the influence of dwell time on the hydraulic interactions between injection events using pilot injection strategy, split injection strategy, post injection strategy and a solenoid diesel injector. To do so, a sweep of dwell time from 0.55 up to 2 ms using all multiple injection strategies and levels of rail pressure, of 80, 100 and 120 MPa, and single level of back pressure, of 5 MPa, was performed. The hydraulic interactions between injection events were characterized through the second injection hydraulic delay and second injection mass in an injection discharge curve indicator equipped with all the components required for its operation and control. In order to define the operating conditions of the multiple injection strategies, to ensure the same injected fuel mass in all cases, the characteristic curves of injection rate for the solenoid diesel injector studied were obtained. The second injection hydraulic delay increases with dwell t... [more]

Keywords: antioxidant, antiviral, macro-algae, subcritical water extraction, ulvan
Non-conventional extraction of bioactive metabolites could provide sustainable alternative techniques to preserve the potency of antioxidants and antiviral compounds extracted from macro-algae. In this paper, we first reviewed the antioxidant and antiviral potential of the active metabolites that exist in the three known macro-algae classes; Phaeophyceae, Rhodophyceae, and Chlorophyceae, and a comparison between their activities is discussed. Secondly, a review of conventional and non-conventional extraction methods is undertaken. The review then focused on identifying the optimal extraction method of sulphated polysaccharide from macro-algae that exhibits both antiviral and antioxidant activity. The review finds that species belonging to the Phaeophyceae and Rhodophceae classes are primarily potent against herpes simplex virus, followed by human immunodeficiency virus and influenza virus. At the same time, species belonging to Chlorophyceae class are recorded by most of the scholars t... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Energy, energy transition, NLP, public opinion, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, social media analysis
Renewable energy is one of the most discussed topics nowadays, more so than traditional combustible energy sources and nuclear energy. There is an apparent need to study its public acceptance and the general public’s knowledge about it, especially in the context of more advanced inventions, such as smart grids, energy storage, or photovoltaic inverters. In this research, the results of a custom survey and those of several types of public social media datasets were processed to gain insights into the acceptance and awareness of these technologies. The second aim was to investigate technologies and related public opinions about manufacturers. One social media dataset was processed by a novel technology based on automatic data collection from popular social media sources, blogs, forums and public news. All the collected and anonymized data were restored in a custom-made data lake (unstructured database) and analyzed by a natural language processing (NLP) engine to extract the required inf... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bias compensation–long short-term memory network, feature selection, photovoltaic power generation, prediction accuracy, training time
In this paper, a hybrid model that considers both accuracy and efficiency is proposed to predict photovoltaic (PV) power generation. To achieve this, improved forward feature selection is applied to obtain the optimal feature set, which aims to remove redundant information and obtain related features, resulting in a significant improvement in forecasting accuracy and efficiency. The prediction error is irregularly distributed. Thus, a bias compensation−long short-term memory (BC−LSTM) network is proposed to minimize the prediction error. The experimental results show that the new feature selection method can improve the prediction accuracy by 0.6% and the calculation efficiency by 20% compared to using feature importance identification based on LightGBM. The BC−LSTM network can improve accuracy by 0.3% using about twice the time compared with the LSTM network, and the hybrid model can further improve prediction accuracy and efficiency based on the BC−LSTM network.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas-dynamic flows, new approximation methods, numerical check, wind turbine
The problem of increasing the reliability of wind turbines exists in the development of new offshore oil and natural gas fields. Reducing emergency situations is necessary due to the autonomous operation of drilling rigs and bulk seaports in the subarctic and Arctic climate. The relevance of the topic is linked with the development of a methodology for theoretical and practical studies of gas dynamics when gas flows in a pipe, based on a mathematical model using new mathematical methods for calculation of excess speeds in case of wind gusts. Problems in the operation of offshore wind turbines arise with storm gusts of wind, which is comparable to the wave movement of the gas flow. Thus, the scientific problem of increasing the reliability of wind turbines in conditions of strong wind gusts is solved. The authors indicate a gross error in the calculations when approximating through the use of the Fourier series. The obtained results will allow us to solve one of the essential problems o... [more]
Utility Scale Ground Mounted Photovoltaic Plants with Gable Structure and Inverter Oversizing for Land-Use Optimization

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ecological footprint, ground mounted photovoltaic, inverter sizing, land use, Optimization, photovoltaic array configurations, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar photovoltaics, sun tracking systems
The paper proposes an effective layout for ground-mounted photovoltaic systems with a gable structure and inverter oversizing, which allows an optimized use of the land and, at the same time, guarantees a valuable return on investment. A case study is presented to show the technical, economic, and environmental advantages compared with conventional “fixed-tilt” and “sun-tracking” ground-mounted photovoltaic installations. The main advantage of this solution is that it maximizes the energy produced per unit of land area used; but, also considering the economic metrics, the net present value of the proposed PV arrangement solution results in a greater annual volume of energy produced and therefore of net revenues and cash flows, and greater than the compared conventional solution with modules exposed in an optimal fixed position or which make use of sun-tracking systems.

Keywords: induction motor, MRAS, sensorless control, sliding mode control, switching linear feedback
This paper presents a newly designed switching linear feedback structure of sliding mode control (SLF-SMC) plugged with an model reference adaptive system (MRAS) based sensorless field-oriented control (SFOC) for induction motor (IM). Indeed, the performance of the MRAS depends mainly on the operating point and the parametric variation of the IM. Hence, the sliding mode control (SMC) could be considered a good control alternative due to its easy implementation and robustness. Simulation and experimentation results are presented to show the superiority of the proposed SLF-SMC technique in comparison with the classical PI controller under different speed ranges and inertia conditions.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anomalous diffusion, fractional derivative, inverse problem, parameter identification
The article presents a method for solving the inverse problem of a two-dimensional anomalous diffusion equation with a Riemann−Liouville fractional-order derivative. In the first part of the present study, the authors present a numerical solution of the direct problem. For this purpose, a differential scheme was developed based on the alternating direction implicit method. The presented method was accompanied by examples illustrating its accuracy. The second part of the study concerned the inverse problem of recreating the model parameters, including the orders of the fractional derivative, in the anomalous diffusion equation. Equations of this type can be used to describe, inter alia, the heat conductivity in porous materials. The ant colony optimization algorithm was used to solve this problem. The authors investigated the impact of the distribution of measurement points, the use of different mesh sizes, and the input data errors on the obtained results.

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: belt damage, conveyor belts, diagnostics, magnetic method, NDT method, neural networks, statistical analysis
This paper presents the identification and classification of steel cord failures in the conveyor belt core based on an analysis of a two-dimensional image of magnetic field changes recorded using the Diagbelt system around scanned failures in the test belt. The obtained set of identified changes in images, obtained for numerous parameters settings of the device, were the base for statistical analysis. This analysis makes it possible to determine the Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient between the parameters being changed and the image of the failures. In the second stage of the research, artificial intelligence methods were applied to construct a multilayer neural network (MLP) and to teach it appropriate identification of damage. In both methods, the same data sets were used, which made it possible to compare methods.

Keywords: demand response, flexible loads shifting scenarios, residential users
This work aims to evaluate the Flexibility Potential that a residential household can effectively provide to the public grid for participating in a Demand Response activity. In detail, by using 14 dwellings electrical data collection, an algorithm to simulate the Load Shifting activity over the daytime is implemented. That algorithm is applied to different scenarios having considered the addition of several technical constraints on the end users’ devices. In such a way, more realistic demand-side management actions are implemented in order to assess the Flexibility Potential deriving from the loads shifting. Basically, by performing simulations it is possible to investigate how the household appliances real operating conditions can reduce the theoretical Flexibility Potential extent. Starting from a Flexibility Price-Market-based Strategy, this work simulates the shifting over the day and night-time of some flexible loads, i.e., the shiftable and the storable ones. Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, fuel cell, global warming potential, greenhouse gas emissions, heavy-duty transport, Hydrogen, Life Cycle Analysis
To meet climate change challenges, the UK government is aiming to reach zero emissions by 2050. The heavy-duty transportation sector contributes 17% to the UKs total emissions, so to combat this, alternative power units to traditional fossil fuel-reliant internal combustion engines (ICEs) are being utilized and investigated. Hydrogen fuel cells are a key area of interest to try and reduce these transportation emissions. To gain a true view of the impact that hydrogen fuel cells can have, this study looks at the impact the manufacturing of a fuel cell has upon the environment, from material extraction through to the usage phase. This was done through the use of a lifecycle assessment following ISO 14040 standards, with hydrogen systems being compared to alternative systems. This study has found that whilst fuel cells depend upon energy intensive materials for their construction, it is possible to reduce emissions by 34−87% compared to ICE systems, depending upon the source of hydrogen u... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: convective flows, large-eddy simulation, pollutant removal, turbulence, urban canyon
Thermal convective flows are common phenomena in real urban canyons and strongly affect the mechanisms of pollutant removal from the canyon. The present contribution aims at investigating the complex interaction between inertial and thermal forces within the canyon, including the impacts on turbulent features and pollutant removal mechanisms. Large-eddy simulations reproduce infinitely long square canyons having isothermal and differently heated facades. A scalar source on the street mimics the pollutant released by traffic. The presence of heated facades triggers convective flows which generate an interaction region around the canyon-ambient interface, characterised by highly energetic turbulent fluxes and an increase of momentum and mass exchange. The presence of this region of high mixing facilitates the pollutant removal across the interface and decreases the urban canopy drag. The heating-up of upwind facade determines favourable convection that strengthens the primary internal vo... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: inter-turn short-circuit, Particle Swarm Optimization, power dispatch, wake effect, wind energy, wind farm control
Inter-Turn Short Circuit (ITSC) fault in stator winding is a common fault in Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG)-based Wind Turbines (WTs). Improper measures in the ITSC fault affect the safety of the faulty WT and the power output of the Wind Farm (WF). This paper combines derating WTs and the power optimization of the WF to diminish the fault effect. At the turbine level, switching the derating strategy and the ITSC Fault Ride-Through (FRT) strategy is adopted to ensure that WTs safely operate under fault. At the farm level, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)-based active power dispatch strategy is used to address proper power references in all of the WTs. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Switching the derating strategy can increase the power limit of the faulty WT, and the ITSC FRT strategy can ensure that the WT operates without excessive faulty current. The PSO-based power optimization can improve the power of the WF to compensate f... [more]

Keywords: combustion, diesel engine, emissions, fatty acid esters, performance
The present study is aimed at studying the energy and environmental performance at various engine loads (BMEP) with identical start of injection (SOI) for all fuel types. The combustion parameters for the fuel mixtures were analyzed using the AVL BOOST software (BURN subroutine). Five different blends were tested, consisting completely of renewable raw materials based on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and fatty acid methyl ester (FE100), and the properties of diesel fuel (D) were compared with respect to these blends. The mixtures were mixed in the following proportions: FE25 (FE25HVO75), FE50 (FE50HVO50), FE75 (FE75HVO25). In this study, diesel exhaust was found to produce higher NOx values compared to FE blends, with HVO being the lowest. Hydrocarbon and smoke emissions were also significantly lower for blends than for diesel. Possible explanations are the physical properties and fatty acid composition of fuel mixtures, affecting injection and further combustion. The results showed... [more]

Keywords: China, climate change, green bond, public–private collaboration, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, risk management, wind power
Green bonds have increasingly been utilized around the world as a source of financing for renewable energy development, designed with compliance requirements and measurable economic returns to investors, while mitigating climate change. However, the efficacy of green bond arranged in the emerging economies for financing renewable energy assets and how the underlying risks are managed have remained to be explored. The paper aims to examine the evolving green financial system sponsored by both public and private institutions in managing such risks within China’s emerging economy. A case study of green financing for a bundle of wind power assets led by a state-owned enterprise (SOE) reveals an alternative approach by structuring public−private collaboration while stipulating market-based financial incentives to institutional stakeholders under a political economy. This institutional consortium is composed of a state development bank, a commercial bank, credit rating agencies, institutiona... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrothermal effects, Finite Element Analysis, inductors, thermal model, transformers
The thermal management of magnetic components for power electronics is crucial to ensure their reliability. However, conventional thermal models for magnetic components are known to have either poor accuracy or excessive complexity. Contrary to these models, the use of Thermal Resistance Matrices is proposed in this paper instead, which combine both accuracy and simplicity. They are usually used to characterize semiconductor devices, but not for magnetic components. The guidelines to apply Thermal Resistance Matrices for magnetic components are discussed in detail. The accuracy of this model is validated by 3D FEA simulations and experimental results, showing an absolute error lower than 5 ∘C and a relative error between −6.4% and 3.9%, which is outstanding compared to the carried-out literature review.

Keywords: erosion patterns, jet-impingement and particle tracking, material loss, sand particle erosion
Erosion causes substantial damage in many industrial equipment such as pump components, valves, elbows, and plugged tees. In most cases, erosion is coupled with corrosion, resulting in major financial loss (nearly 3.4% of the global gross domestic product) as evidenced in oil and gas industries. In most cases, the erosion occurs in a submerged water medium. In this paper, erosion characteristics of stainless steel 316 were investigated computationally in a water-submerged jet impingement setup. The erosion profiles and patterns were obtained for various parameters over ranges of inlet velocities (3 to 16 m/s), nozzle diameters (5 to 10 mm), nozzle−target distances (5 to 20 mm), nozzle shapes (circular, elliptical, square, and rectangular), impingement angles (60° to 90°), and particle sizes (50 to 300 µm). The range of Reynolds number studied based on nozzle diameters is 21,000−120,000. The Eulerian−Lagrangian approach was used for flow field prediction and particle tracking considerin... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: AC Joule loss, frozen permeability, MSO coil, outer-rotor, pole and slot combination
This paper proposes a design guideline for selecting the pole and slot combination of an outer-rotor permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) using a maximum slot occupation (MSO) coil. Because the MSO coil has a large conductor area, the AC Joule loss in the conductors may be increased at high frequencies. To ensure high-efficiency for the PMSM, it is necessary to reduce the loss. Thus, it is important to select the pole- and slot- combination that has the minimum AC Joule loss. The loss is caused by skin/proximity effects and variations in the slot leakage flux. The skin effect is due to the armature winding and the variation in the slot leakage flux is due to the field flux. A method for separating the AC Joule loss due to each component using the frozen permeability method is proposed. Based on the proposed method, the effect of each cause on the loss at various pole- and slot- combinations is analyzed in this study.
Research on Online Diagnosis Method of Fuel Cell Centrifugal Air Compressor Surge Fault

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 0–1 standardization, centrifugal air compressor, coefficient extraction, surge, wavelet transform
Stable operation of fuel cell air compressions is constrained by rotating surge in low flowrate conditions. In this paper, a diagnosis criterion based on wavelet transform to solve the surge fault is proposed. First of all, the Fourier transform was used to analyze the spectral characteristics of the outlet flowrate. Before wavelet transform was used, the data are standardized. This step eliminated the influence of the flowrate’s absolute value. Then, the wavelet coefficients under characteristic frequencies were extracted. Finally, the diagnosis criterion’s threshold, which indicates the surge occurrence, was defined from the perspective of safety margin. The criterion threshold alerted a surge only 1 s after it occurred. The analysis results show that the criterion meets with the expectation, and it can be used for the control of anti-surge valve.

Keywords: adiabatic section, geometric changes, heat transfer co-efficient, two-phase closed thermosiphon
In this study, a modified non-uniform adiabatic section in a Two-Phase Closed Thermosiphon (TPCT) is proposed where the uniform section was replaced by convergent and divergent (C-D) sections. The heat transfer analysis was performed on the modified TPCT and their findings were compared with standard TPCT. The deionized water (DI) in the proportion of 30 vol% is filled in both the TPCTs. Further, the heat transfer performance analysis was carried out for three different orientations, such as 0°, 45° and 90°, and heat input was varied from 50 to 250 W. The effect of these geometrical changes and inclination angles on the heat transfer performance of both the TPCT were evaluated to compare the thermal resistance, wall temperature variation and heat transfer coefficient. The non-dimensional numbers such as Weber (WE), Bond (BO), Condensation (CO) and Kutateladze (KU) were investigated based on heat fluxes for both TPCTs. By introducing the convergent-divergent section nearer to the conden... [more]

In this paper, we report an investigation of adding a non-hydride forming element in the multicomponent Ti-V-Nb-M system. By the Calculation of Phase Diagrams approach (CALPHAD), the thermodynamic phase stability of the TiVNbT (T = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) was investigated, and Cr was selected as the fourth alloying element due its high tendency to stabilize body-centered cubic solid solutions (BCC). The (TiVNb)100−xCrx alloys (with x = 15, 25, and 35 at.% Cr) were synthesized by arc-melting. The structural characterization reveals that the three alloys were composed of a major BCC phase, which agrees with the thermodynamic calculations. The three alloys absorb hydrogen at room temperature without any activation treatment, achieving a hydrogen uptake of about H/M = 2. The Pressure-Composition-Isotherms curves (PCI) has shown that increasing the Cr amount increases the equilibrium pressures, indicating that tunable H storage properties can be achieved by controlling the alloys’ Cr conten...
