April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compressed gaseous hydrogen, hydrogen infrastructure, hydrogen transport, liquid hydrogen, liquid organic hydrogen carriers, truck routing
Carbon-free transportation is envisaged by means of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) propelled by hydrogen that originates from renewably electricity. However, there is a spatial and temporal gap in the production and demand of hydrogen. Therefore, hydrogen storage and transport remain key challenges for sustainable transportation with FCEVs. In this study, we propose a method for calculating a spatially resolved highway routing model for Germany to transport hydrogen by truck from the 15 production locations (source) to the 9683 fueling stations (sink) required by 2050. We consider herein three different storage modes, namely compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2), liquid hydrogen (LH2) and liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC). The model applies Dijkstra’s shortest path algorithm for all available source-sink connections prior to optimizing the supply. By creating a detailed routing result for each source-sink connection, a detour factor is introduced for “first and last mile” transp... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: ARDL method, CO2 emissions, Danube region countries, economic growth
The aim of this study is to examine the empirical cointegration, long-run and short-run dynamics and causal relationships between carbon emissions, energy consumption and economic growth in 14 Danube region countries over the period of 1990−2019. The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds testing methodology was applied for each of the examined variables as a dependent variable. Limited by the length of the time series, we excluded two countries from the analysis and obtained valid results for the others for 26 of 36 ARDL models. The ARDL bounds reliably confirmed long-run cointegration between carbon emissions, energy consumption and economic growth in Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Economic growth and energy consumption have a significant impact on carbon emissions in the long-run in all of these four countries; in the short-run, the impact of economic growth is significant in Austria. Likewise, when examining cointegration between energy consumption, carbon emission... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asymmetry of the machine, dual three-phase PMSM, fault-tolerance, improved control loops, multi-phase
Multi-phase motors and generators are regarded with great fault tolerance capability, especially on open-circuit faults. Various mathematics analytical methods are applied for their fault control. In this paper, a fault-tolerant control strategy with asymmetric phase current for the open-circuit faults with arbitrary phases in the six-phase PMSM (six-phase permanent magnetic synchronous motor, 6P-PMSM) system, is proposed for better electrical and dynamical performance of the machine. An innovative mathematical model for PMSM under one to four-phase-open circuit faults are established considering the asymmetry of the machine. Combining with time-varying relations in machines’ working conditions, targeted decoupling transformation matrixes of every kind of open-circuit faults are settled by voltage equations under different faults. Modified control strategy with a connection between the neutral point and the inverter’s DC side is presented, which aims at increasing the system redundancy... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: demand, demand response, Demand Side Management, flexibility, forecasting, generation, Optimization, prediction interval, smart islands, time series
Energy demand and generation are common variables that need to be forecast in recent years, due to the necessity for energy self-consumption via storage and Demand Side Management. This work studies multi-step time series forecasting models for energy with confidence intervals for each time point, accompanied by a demand optimization algorithm, for energy management in partly or completely isolated islands. Particularly, the forecasting is performed via numerous traditional and contemporary machine learning regression models, which receive as input past energy data and weather forecasts. During pre-processing, the historical data are grouped into sets of months and days of week based on clustering models, and a separate regression model is automatically selected for each of them, as well as for each forecasting horizon. Furthermore, the multi-criteria optimization algorithm is implemented for demand scheduling with load shifting, assuming that, at each time point, demand is within its... [more]
Improving Energy Efficiency on SDN Control-Plane Using Multi-Core Controllers
Tadeu F. Oliveira, Samuel Xavier-de-Souza, Luiz F. Silveira
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control-plane, controller, Energy Efficiency, multicore, software-defined network
Software-defined networks have become more common in data centers. The programmability of these networks is a great feature that allows innovation to be deployed fast, following the increasing number of new applications. This growth comes with a cost of more processing power and energy consumption. Many researchers have tackled this issue using existing routing techniques to dynamically adjust the network forwarding plane to save energy. On the control-plane, researchers have found algorithms for positioning the controller in a way to reduce the number of used links, thus reducing energy. These strategies reduce energy consumption at the expense of processing power of the controllers. This paper proposes a novel approach to energy efficiency focused on the network’s control-plane, which is complementary to the many already existing data-plane solutions. It takes advantage of the parallel processing capabilities of modern off-the-shelf multicore processors to split the many tasks of the... [more]

Keywords: micro-hydro power, remote communities, run-of-the-river power generation, Sustainability, vertical axis water turbine (VAWT)
The rise in energy requirements and its shortfall in developing countries have affected socioeconomic life. Communities in remote mountainous regions in Asia are among the most affected by energy deprivation. This study presents the feasibility of an alternate strategy of supplying clean energy to the areas consisting of pristine mountains and forest terrain. Southeast Asia has a much-diversified landscape and varied natural resources, including abundant water resources. The current study is motivated by this abundant supply of streams which provides an excellent environment for run-of-river micro vertical axis water turbines. However, to limit the scope of the study, the rivers and streams flowing in northern areas of Pakistan are taken as the reference. The study proposes a comprehensive answer for supplying low-cost sustainable energy solutions for such remote communities. The suggested solution consists of a preliminary hydrodynamic design using Qblade, further analysis using numer... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: compression molding, hydrophobic silica nanoparticles, mechanical durability, pH effect on chemical stability, polypropylene, self-cleaning, superhydrophobic surface, surface morphology
Superhydrophobic surfaces have been extensively studied for their unique interfacial interaction between water and the surface, and they can be used for self-cleaning, drag reduction, anti-icing, and other applications. To make the superhydrophobic surfaces, nano/microscale structures and a low surface energy should be realized. The development of a durable superhydrophobic surface was hindered by the vulnerability of the surface to mechanical contact. To improve the robustness of the superhydrophobic surface toward mechanical damage, the hydrophobic polypropylene (PP) surface was coated with a thick layer of hydrophobic silica nanoparticles (SNPs) using a simple compression molding process. The thick layer consists of SNPs and PP, and the roles of SNPs and PP are nano/microscale structures with a low surface energy and binder for nanoparticles, respectively. This revealed improvement in the superhydrophobic tendency, with an apparent contact angle of about 170° and a sliding angle of... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: artificial roughness, conical protrusion rib, solar air heater, thermo-hydraulic performance
To enhance the thermal performance of solar air heaters (SAHs), protrusion ribs on the absorber are considered to be an attractive solution due to their several advantages. These ribs do not cause a significant pressure drop in the SAH duct and help to enhance the heat transfer to flowing air. On the other hand, a degree of roughness of the protrusion rib on the absorber can be produced by pressing the indenting device without adding additional mass. In this paper, the thermo-hydraulic performances of different roughnesses of the conical protrusion rib on the absorber plate have been evaluated by the mutual consideration of thermal as well as hydraulic performance in term of net effective efficiency. Therefore, an analytical technique has been exploited to predict the characteristics of the net effective efficiency under various operating conditions, such as the flow Reynolds number, temperature increase parameter and insolation. The effects of the conical protrusion rib roughness—name... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: apparent power, BLDC motor, deep learning, harmonics, RUL
An effective remaining useful life (RUL) estimation method is of great concern in industrial machinery to ensure system reliability and reduce the risk of unexpected failures. Anticipation of an electric motor’s future state can improve the yield of a system and warrant the reuse of the industrial asset. In this paper, we present an effective RUL estimation framework of brushless DC (BLDC) motor using third harmonic analysis and output apparent power monitoring. In this work, the mechanical output of the BLDC motor is monitored through a coupled generator. To emphasize the total power generation, we have analyzed the trend of apparent power, which preserves the characteristics of real power and reactive power in an AC power system. A normalized modal current (NMC) is used to extract the current features from the BLDC motor. Fault characteristics of motor current and generator power are fused using a Kalman filter to estimate the RUL. Degradation patterns for the BLDC motor have been mo... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC–DC boost converter, fractional-order controller, iso-damping property, non-minimum phase system, PID controller
In this work, the voltage regulation of a boost converter is addressed. A non-integer order PID controller is proposed to deal with the closed-loop instability of the system. The average linear model of the converter is obtained through small-signal approximation. The resulting average linear model is considered divided into minimum and normalized non-minimum phase parts. This approach allows us to design a controller for the minimum phase part of the system, excluding temporarily the non-minimum phase one. A fractional-order PID controller approximation is suggested for the minimum phase part of the system. The proposal for the realization of the electrical controller is described and its implementation is used to corroborate its effectiveness when regulating the output voltage in the boost converter. The fractional-order PID approximation achieves regulation of the output voltage in the boost converter by exhibiting the iso-damping property and using a single control loop, which conf... [more]

Keywords: electric vehicle (EV), energy storage system (ESS), EV-charging station, Optimization, power scheduling, queueing system, solar photovoltaic (PV)
Sufficient and convenient fast-charging facilities are crucial for the effective integration of electric vehicles. To construct enough fast electric vehicle-charging stations, station owners need to earn a reasonable profit. This paper proposed an optimization framework for profit maximization, which determined the combined planning and operation of the charging station considering the vehicle arrival pattern, intermittent solar photovoltaic generation, and energy storage system management. In a planning horizon, the proposed optimization framework finds an optimal configuration of a grid-connected charging station. Besides, during the operation horizon, it determines an optimal power scheduling in the charging station. We formulated an optimization framework to maximize the expected profit of the station. Four types of costs were considered during the planning period: the investment cost, operational cost, maintenance cost, and penalties. The penalties arose from vehicle customers’ di... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy recovery, Exergy, industrial steam networks, oil-free, process integration, small-scale turbomachinery
This study investigates the technical and economic feasibility of replacing throttling valves with smale-scale, oil-free turbomachinery in industrial steam networks. This is done from the perspective of the turbomachine, which has to be integrated into a new or existing process. The considered machines have a power range of P=[0.5,…,250 kW] and have been designed using real industrial data from existing processes. Design guidelines are developed, which take into account the thermodynamic process as well as engineering aspects of such a turbomachine. The results suggest that steam conditioning prior to heat exchange could be completed by small expanders to produce mechanical work, reducing exergy destruction and improving site-wide energy efficiency compared to throttling valves. Cost estimates for such machines are presented, which serve as a basis for case-specific investment calculations. The resulting payback times of less than 18 months highlight the economic potential such solutio... [more]

Keywords: autoencoder, dataset, deep learning, ensemble, Machine Learning, power system stability, transfer learning, transient stability assessment, transient stability index
Increased integration of renewable energy sources brings new challenges to the secure and stable power system operation. Operational challenges emanating from the reduced system inertia, in particular, will have important repercussions on the power system transient stability assessment (TSA). At the same time, a rise of the “big data” in the power system, from the development of wide area monitoring systems, introduces new paradigms for dealing with these challenges. Transient stability concerns are drawing attention of various stakeholders as they can be the leading causes of major outages. The aim of this paper is to address the power system TSA problem from the perspective of data mining and machine learning (ML). A novel 3.8 GB open dataset of time-domain phasor measurements signals is built from dynamic simulations of the IEEE New England 39-bus test case power system. A data processing pipeline is developed for features engineering and statistical post-processing. A complete ML m... [more]

Keywords: Autonomie, component sizing, forward-looking simulation, hybrid electric vehicle, Optimization, Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle
Many leading companies in the automotive industry have been putting tremendous effort into developing new powertrains and technologies to make their products more energy efficient. Evaluating the fuel economy benefit of a new technology in specific powertrain systems is straightforward; and, in an early concept phase, obtaining a projection of energy efficiency benefits from new technologies is extremely useful. However, when carmakers consider new technology or powertrain configurations, they must deal with a trade-off problem involving factors such as energy efficiency and performance, because of the complexities of sizing a vehicle’s powertrain components, which directly affect its energy efficiency and dynamic performance. As powertrains of modern vehicles become more complicated, even more effort is required to design the size of each component. This study presents a component-sizing process based on the forward-looking vehicle simulator “Autonomie” and the optimization algorithm... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: COVID-19 pandemic, electricity consumption, GDP
The COVID-19 pandemic obliged the Romanian government to take drastic measures to contain the virus. More than this, they imposed the heaviest restrictions in the EU. For more than a month, during the lockdown period, everything stopped: schools and universities had only online classes, national and international flights and gatherings were forbidden, and many restrictions for travel were imposed. This paper analyzes the changes that occurred in electricity consumption linked with economic growth, during the pandemic, in Romania. For a better understanding of the correlations between gross domestic product (GDP) and electricity consumption (EC) in different economic contexts, the period 2008−2020 was divided into three series: the 2008−2012 financial crisis and the post-crisis recovery period, the 2013−2019 period of economic growth, and the Q1−Q3 2020 pandemic period. Using correlation coefficients and regression analysis, the authors found that the GDP decoupled from EC in the first... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: backpropagation neural network, energy consumption, environmental Kuznets curve, pollution, urbanization, Vietnam
This paper examines the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) in Vietnam between 1977 and 2019. Using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach, we find an inverted N-shaped relation between economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions in both the long- and short-run. The econometric results also reveal that energy consumption and urbanization statistically positively impact pollution. The long-run Granger causality test shows a unidirectional causality from energy consumption and economic growth to pollution while there is no causal relationship between energy consumption and economic growth. These suggest some crucial policies for curtailing emissions without harming economic development. In the second step, we also employed the back-propagation neural networks (BPN) to compare the work of econometrics in carbon dioxide emissions forecasting. A 5-4-1 multi-layer perceptron with BPN and learning rate was set at 0.1, which outperforms the ARDL’s outputs. Our findings suggest the p... [more]
