Michał Patyk, Przemysław Bodziony, Zbigniew Krysa
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ELECTRE III, mining equipment, multiple criteria decision making (MCDM), surface mining
Selection and assessment of mining equipment used in open pit rock mines relies chiefly on estimates of overall exploitation cost. The rational arrangement of mining equipment and systems comprising loading machines, haul trucks and crushing plants should be preceded by a thorough analysis of technical and economic aspects, such as investment outlays and the costs of further exploitation, which largely determine the costs of mining operations and the deposit value. Additionally, the operational parameters of the mining equipment ought to be considered. In this study, a universal set of evaluation criteria has been developed, and an evaluation method has been applied for the selection of surface mining equipment and the processing system to be operated in specific mining conditions, defined by the user. The objective of this study is to develop and apply the new methodology of multi-criteria selection of open pit rock mining equipment based on multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) pr... [more]
Cybersecurity Considerations for Grid-Connected Batteries with Hardware Demonstrations
Megan Culler, Hannah Burroughs
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery, cyber-physical security, cybersecurity, distributed energy resource
The share of renewable and distributed energy resources (DERs), like wind turbines, solar photovoltaics and grid-connected batteries, interconnected to the electric grid is rapidly increasing due to reduced costs, rising efficiency, and regulatory requirements aimed at incentivizing a lower-carbon electricity system. These distributed energy resources differ from traditional generation in many ways including the use of many smaller devices connected primarily (but not exclusively) to the distribution network, rather than few larger devices connected to the transmission network. DERs being installed today often include modern communication hardware like cellular modems and WiFi connectivity and, in addition, the inverters used to connect these resources to the grid are gaining increasingly complex capabilities, like providing voltage and frequency support or supporting microgrids. To perform these new functions safely, communications to the device and more complex controls are required.... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 leakage, CO2 sequestration, CO2-EOR, geomechanics, reservoir fluid flow modelling, threshold pressure, tightness of caprock
This study addresses the problem of geological structure tightness for the purposes of enhanced oil recovery with CO2 sequestration. For the first time in the history of Polish geological survey the advanced methods, practical assumptions, and quantitative results of detailed simulations were applied to study the geological structure of a domestic oil reservoir as a potential candidate for a combined enhanced oil recovery and CO2 sequestration project. An analysis of the structure sequestration capacity and its tightness was performed using numerical methods that combined geomechanical and reservoir fluid flow modelling with a standard two-way coupling procedure. By applying the correlation between the geomechanical state and transport properties of the caprock, threshold pressure variations were determined to be a key factor affecting the sealing properties of the reservoir−caprock boundary. In addition to the estimation of the sequestration capacity of the structure, the process of C... [more]

Keywords: ATIS advanced traveler information systems, ICT-based mobility services, mobility behaviors, modal shift, mode choice, ride hailing, ridesourcing, sustainable urban transportation
The energy consumption and emissions in the urban transportation are influenced not only by technical efficiency in the mobility operations but also by the citizens’ mobility behaviors including mode choices and modal shift among sustainable and unsustainable mobility modes. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can play an important role in the mobility behaviors of citizens, and it is necessary to study whether ICTs support sustainable mode choices like public transport and nonmotorized modes, which increase the total energy efficiency in the urban mobility and reduce traffic congestion and related emissions. This paper focuses on the two most popular ICT services in the urban transport, which are ATIS (Advanced Traveler Information Systems), and ridesourcing services. This study used the New York Citywide Mobility Survey (CMS) findings with a sample of 3346 participants. The associations between using these two ICT services and the mobility behaviors (mode choice with AT... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cooperation, deep belief network, hybrid optimization, network loss, wind energy bidding
As the integration of large-scale wind energy is increasing into the electricity grids, the role of wind energy suppliers should be investigated as a price-maker as their participation would influence the locational marginal price (LMP) of electricity. The existing bidding strategies for a wind energy supplier faces limitations with respect to the potential cooperation, other competitors’ bidding behavior, network loss, and uncertainty of wind production (WP) and balancing market price (BMP). Hence, to solve these problems, a novel bidding strategy (BS) for a wind power supplier as a price-maker has been proposed in this paper. The new algorithm, called the evolutionary game approach (EGA) inspired hybrid particle swarm optimization and improved firefly algorithm (HPSOIFA), has been proposed to handle the bidding issue. The bidding behavior of power suppliers, including conventional power suppliers, has been encoded as one species to obtain the equilibrium where the EGA can explore dyn... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active tendons, advanced blade pitch control, flow control, piezoelectric actuator, tuned damper, variable rotor diameter, vibration control, wind turbine
The installation of wind energy increased in the last twenty years, as its cost decreased, and it contributes to reducing GHG emissions. A race toward gigantism characterizes wind turbine development, primarily driven by offshore projects. The larger wind turbines are facing higher loads, and the imperatives of mass reduction make them more flexible. Size increase of wind turbines results in higher structural vibrations that reduce the lifetime of the components (blades, main shaft, bearings, generator, gearbox, etc.) and might lead to failure or destruction. This paper aims to present in detail the problems associated with wind turbine vibration and a thorough literature review of the different mitigation solutions. We explore the advantages, drawbacks, and challenges of the existing vibration control systems for wind turbines. These systems belong to six main categories, according to the physical principles used and how they operate to mitigate the vibrations. This paper offers a mul... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: biorefinery, environmental fragility, geographic information systems, GIS, olive-derived biomass
A biorefinery integrated process based on lignocellulosic feedstock is especially interesting in rural areas with a high density of agricultural and agro-industrial wastes, which is the case for olive crop areas and their associated industries. In the region of Andalusia, in the south of Spain, the provinces of Jaén, Córdoba and Seville accumulate more than 70% of the olive wastes generated in Spain. Therefore, the valorisation of these wastes is a matter of interest from both an environmental and a social point of view. The olive biorefinery involves a multi-product process from different raw materials: olive leaves, exhausted olive pomace, olive stones and olive tree pruning residues. Biorefinery processes associated with these wastes would allow their valorisation to produce bioenergy and high value-added renewable products. In this work, using geographic information system tools, the biomass from olive crop fields, mills and olive pomace-extracting industries, where these wastes ar... [more]

Segmentation of images from scanning electron microscope, especially multiphase, poses a drawback in their microstructure quantification process. The labeling process must be automatized due to the time consumption and irreproducibility of the manual labeling procedure. Here we show a swarm intelligence-driven filtration methodology performed on raw solid oxide fuel cell anode’s material images to improve the segmentation methods’ performance. The methodology focused on two significant parts of the segmentation process, which are filtering and labeling. During the first one, the images underwent filtering by applying a series of filters, whose operation parameters were determined using Particle Swarm Optimization upon a dedicated cost function. Next, Seeded Region Growing, k-Means Clustering, Multithresholding, and Simple Linear Iterative Clustering Superpixel algorithms were utilized to label the filtered images’ regions into consecutive phases in the microstructure. April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 2L-VSC, AFE, converter assessment, converter design, cost assessment, power density, Si-IGBT, SiC-MOSFET
In this paper, a design driven comparison between two 190 kVA industrial three-phase two-level voltage source converter (2L-VSC) designs based in silicon carbide (SiC) and silicon (Si) for 690 V grids is presented. These two designs were conceived to have the same nominal power, while switching at reasonable switching speeds and requiring the same case to ambient thermal impedance. Under these conditions, the designs were studied to detect the potential gains and limitations that a pragmatic converter design could feature when using these two technologies regarding cost, efficiency, size and weight. To achieve this, experimentally determined semiconductor characteristics were used to perform simulations, the results of which were then used to design the essential parts of the converter. These designed parts were then corroborated with manufacturers, from which physical characteristics of all designed components were obtained. The results show that the SiC based design presents substant... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DInSAR, image analysis, numerical algorithm, subsidence detection
The article presents a new method of automatic detection of subsidence troughs caused by underground coal mining. Land subsidence that results from mining leads to considerable damage to subsurface and surface infrastructure such as walls of buildings, road surfaces, and water relations in built-up areas. Within next 30 years, all coal mines are to be closed as part of the transformation of the mining industry in Poland. However, this is not going to solve the problem of subsidence in those areas. Thus, it is necessary to detect and constantly monitor such hazards. One of the techniques used for that purpose is DInSAR (differential interferometry synthetic aperture radar). It makes it possible to monitor land deformation over large areas with high accuracy and very good spatial and temporal resolution. Subsidence, particularly related to mining, usually manifests itself in interferograms in the form of elliptical interferometric fringes. An important issue here is partial or full autom... [more]

Work was carried out to diagnose irregularities in the operation of a vacuum-tube solar collector. Experimental investigations of the collector were carried out at the solar collector field test stand in the Laboratory of Solar Collectors at the Koszalin University of Technology. The scope of the work included the following: research on thermal efficiency characteristics, research on the temperature distribution on the solar collector manifold, and research on the geometric structure of the heat pipe and filling with the working medium. Based on the diagnostic tests carried out, the occurrence of incorrect sedimentation in the condenser on the neck of the heat pipe (44%) and an incorrect amount of working medium (66%) were found. The results show that the functioning of the heat pipe significantly depends on its geometric structure and the amount of working medium. Any irregularity at the production stage contributes to a reduction in the thermal efficiency of the solar collector. The... [more]

Keywords: coalbed methane, electricity production forecasting, Energy Efficiency, internal combustion engine, neural networks, pollutant emission
Increasing emissions from mining areas and a high global warming potential of methane have caused gas management to become a vital challenge. At the same time, it provides the opportunity to obtain economic benefits. In addition, the use of combined heat and power (CHP) in the case of coalbed methane combustion enables much more efficient use of this fuel. The article analyses the possibility of electricity production using gas engines fueled with methane captured from the Budryk coal mine in Poland. The basic issue concerning the energy production from coalbed methane is the continuity of supply, which is to ensure the required amount and concentration of the gas mixture for combustion. Hence, the reliability of supply for electricity production is of key importance. The analysis included the basic characterization of both the daily and annual methane capture by the mine’s methane drainage system, as well as the development of predictive models to determine electricity production base... April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC transmission, electromagnetic transient simulation, flashover, high voltage, lightning impulse, meshed HVDC grids, overvoltage propagation
This paper reports on the propagation of lightning overvoltage in a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) meshed grid. Since several topologies of meshed grids have been elaborated in the last decade, we used a common comprehensive reference test platform. The lightning impulse propagation was investigated with regard to the impact of surge arresters and the polarity of the lightning stroke concerning the DC line polarity (±500 kV). Various scenarios were considered, including a direct lightning strike to the DC+ conductor, to the tower, and to the shielding wire in the middle of the span, including backflash on the insulators. The influence of tower footing impedance on overvoltage levels at various nodes was assessed, depicting the critical value. A description of the models used in the simulations was provided. The main focus of the paper was on the wide-area propagation of the overvoltages in the meshed grid, at distant terminals and inside the feeders. An interesting observation was... [more]

In this paper we present an approach for real-time simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing of Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) that rely on switching models while supporting system level analysis. Using the Latency Based Linear Multistep Compound (LB-LMC) approach, we achieved a 50 ns simulation time step for systems composed of several MMC converters and for converters of various complexity. To facilitate system level testing, we introduce the use of a serial communication-based (Aurora) interface for HIL testing of MMC converters and we analyzed the effect that communication latency has on the accuracy of the HIL test. The simulation and HIL results are validated against an MMC laboratory prototype.

Keywords: carbonate rocks, engineered water injection, geochemistry, improved oil recovery, wettability alteration
Waterflooding remains the most commonly used method to improve oil recovery. Although the injected brine type is mainly dependent on its availability, few of its characteristics can be controlled during project design. Published laboratory work indicates that the adjustment of injected brine composition can cause an increase in oil production by wettability alteration. This research objective is to propose a novel four-step framework for modeling improved oil recovery by Engineered Water Injection from laboratory to numerical simulation for carbonate formations. We use a geochemical-based model that estimates contact angles to predict wettability alteration. The steps are (1) screening criteria, (2) geochemical evaluation, (3) wettability alteration modeling, and (4) coreflood history-match. We validate our framework by conducting history-match simulations of Brazilian Pre-Salt corefloods. Incremental oil recovery factors are between 5 to 11%, consistent with those reported during expe... [more]

In comparison to lignocellulosic biomass, which is suitable for thermo-chemical valorization, the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) is mainly treated via composting or anaerobic digestion (AD). An efficient utilization of OFMSW is difficult due to variations in its composition. Based on the characteristics of OFMSW, hydrothermal treatment (HTT) experiments at temperatures < 200 °C as an alternative OFMSW-processing were evaluated in this study. The raw OFMSW was characterized with a dry matter (DM)-based organic dry matter (oDM) content of 77.88 ± 1.37 %DM and a higher heating value (HHV) of 15,417 ± 1258 J/gDM. Through HTT at 150, 170 and 185 °C, the oDM contents as well as H/C and O/C ratios were lowered while the HHV increased up to 16,716 ± 257 J/gDM. HTT led to improved fuel properties concerning ash melting, corrosion stress and emission behavior. Negative consequences of the HTT process were higher contents of ash in the biochar as well as accumulated heavy me... [more]
