Solid Biomass Energy Potential as a Development Opportunity for Rural Communities

An Explicit Fourth-Order Compact Numerical Scheme for Heat Transfer of Boundary Layer Flow

The main contribution of this article is to propose a compact explicit scheme for solving time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs). The proposed explicit scheme has an advantage over the corresponding implicit compact scheme to find solutions of nonlinear and linear convection−diffusion type equations because the implicit existing compact scheme fails to obtain the solution. In addition, the present scheme provides fourth-order accuracy in space and second-order accuracy in time, and is constructed on three grid points and three time levels. Estimation and control of wheel slip is a critical consideration in preventing loss of traction, minimizing power consumptions, and reducing soil disturbance. An approach to wheel slip estimation and control, which is robust to sensor noises and modeling imperfection, has been investigated in this study. The proposed method uses a simplified form of wheels longitudinal dynamic and the measurement of wheel and vehicle speeds to estimate and control the optimum slip. In large substations, many lightning rods are installed on multi-grounded frames. The lightning rods, the frame, the grounding grid and the soil form a whole body, and the lightning current will be discharged from many grounding points. In this paper, based on the partial element equivalent circuit method, a numerical model, in the time domain, is developed to simulate the lightning-caused electromagnetic transients on the frame and the grounding grid. The model is verified by field testing and by comparison with commercial software. The dynamics of the detonation waves are studied during a descending modal transition (DMT) where four co-rotating detonations waves decrease to three in a gaseous methane-oxygen RDRE. Detonation wave tracking is applied to capture, visualize and analyze unsteady, 3D detonation wave dynamics data within the combustion chamber of the RDRE. This controller represents a multimodal problem, where several distinct solutions can achieve similar best performances, and metaheuristics optimization algorithms can behave differently during the optimization process. Finding the correct proportionality between the parameters is an arduous task that often does not have an algebraic solution. The Gaussian functions of each control action have three parameters, resulting in a total of nine parameters to be defined. Flow Configurations of Membraneless Microfluidic Fuel Cells: A Review

Membraneless microfluidic fuel cells (MMFCs) are being studied extensively as an alternative to batteries and conventional membrane fuel cells because of their simple functioning and lower manufacturing cost. MMFCs use the laminar flow of reactant species (fuel and oxidant) to eliminate the electrolyte membrane, which has conventionally been used to isolate anodic and cathodic half-cell reactions. This review article summarizes the MMFCs with six major categories of flow configurations that have been reported from 2002 to 2020. The discussion highlights the critical factors that affect and limit the performance of MMFCs. Since MMFCs are diffusion-limited, most of this review focuses on how different flow configurations act to reduce or modify diffusive mixing and depletion zones to enhance the power density output. Research opportunities are also pointed out, and the challenges in MMFCs are suggested to improve cell performance and make them practical in the near future.

In this work, simulations were performed to optimize the parameters of a lead-free perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell for the improved efficiency and stability of commercial devices. The top sub-cell is based on a lead-free perovskite with a large bandgap of 1.8 eV, an electron transport layer of SnO2/PCBM, which is known for its anti-hysteresis effect, and a hole transport layer of NiO to improve stability, whereas the bottom sub-cell is based on n-type silicon to increase the efficiency of the whole cell. First, the two sub-cells were simulated under standalone conditions for calibration purposes. Corner Separation Control Using a New Combined Slotted Configuration in a High-Turning Compressor Cascade under Different Solidities

In order to comprehensively control the corner separation and the blade trailing edge (TE) separation in a high-turning compressor stator cascade, this research proposes a new combined slotted configuration consisting of one full-span slot and two blade-end slots. Taking into account the effect of the blade solidity, the performance of the original cascade and the combined slotted cascade was calculated and evaluated in a wide incidence angle range at two blade solidities. The results indicated that the blade loading and the corner separation range of the original cascade becomes larger as the blade solidity decreases from 1.66 to 1.36, which leads to higher total pressure loss and lower pressure diffusing capacity under positive incidence angles. Supra-Regional District Heating Networks: A Missing Infrastructure for a Sustainable Energy System

In analogy to electricity transmission networks, this paper analyzes the concept of supra-regional district heating networks (SR-DHN), connecting a large number of actors. Using a back-casting approach, a SR-DHN is assumed to exist and thus, implementation challenges, such as economic feasibility and energy losses, are circumvented in the first step (but are analyzed in the discourse). The paper then analyzes, in an interdisciplinary qualitative manner and supported by a case study, what technical, operational, economic and legal issues must have been resolved. Results show that the heat transmission network, being the backbone of the SR-DHN, is an expensive infrastructure, but is likely to become economic in a non-fossil energy system. Methodology for Sensitivity Analysis of Homogenized Cross-Sections to Instantaneous and Historical Lattice Conditions with Application to AP1000® PWR Lattice

In the two-step method for nuclear reactor simulation, lattice physics calculations are performed to compute homogenized cross-sections for a variety of burnups and lattice configurations. A nodal code is then used to perform full-core analysis using the pre-calculated homogenized cross-sections. One source of uncertainty introduced in this method is that the lattice configuration or depletion conditions typically do not match a pre-calculated one from the lattice physics simulations. Characterization of Particle Emissions from a DGEN 380 Small Turbofan Fueled with ATJ Blends

The fine particulate matter (PM) emitted from jet aircraft poses a serious threat to the environment and human health which can be mitigated by using biofuels. This paper aims to quantify PM emissions from a small turbofan fueled with the alcohol to jet (ATJ) synthetic kerosene and its various blends (5%, 20%, and 30% of ATJ) with Jet A-1 fuel. Emissions from a turbofan engine (DGEN 380) with a high bypass ratio, applicable in small private jets, were studied. Among the four fuels tested, the PM-number emission index (EIN) was the lowest for the ATJ 30% blend. EIN for ATJ 30% dropped from 1.1 × 1017 to 4.7 × 1016 particles/kg of fuel. Burning alternative fuel blends reduced the particle mass emissions over the entire range of fuel flow by at least 117 mg/kg of fuel. The particles formed in the nucleation mechanism dominate PM emission, which is characteristic of jet engines. Cellulosic ethanol (CE) can not only be produced from a nonedible, cheap, and abundant lignocellulose feedstock but also can reduce carbon footprint significantly compared to starch ethanol. Despite great stimulation worldwide, CE production has not yet commercialized because of the complexity of lignocellulose. Therefore, intensive research and development are needed to improve CE technologies. In this study, a cost-efficient and sustainable design was proposed for the coproduction of CE, heat, and electricity from the actual lignocellulosic fermentation broth. A New Approach for Characterizing Pile Heat Exchangers Using Thermal Response Tests

Pile heat exchangers offer a cost effective route to implementation of ground-source heat pump systems for many large commercial buildings compared with traditional boreholes. Such projects typically use thermal response tests to determine the key input parameters for system design, namely soil thermal conductivity and heat exchanger thermal resistance. However, this brings challenges for pile heat exchanger based systems, where in situ thermal response tests are known to be less reliable due to the large thermal capacity of the pile. This paper presents a new “black box” resistance capacitive model for applications to pile thermal response tests. The approach is tested against case study data and shown to perform well. Additional test duration savings are shown to be possible if a novel combination of borehole and pile thermal response tests is applied together to determine design parameters.
