Design Study on Customised Piezoelectric Elements for Energy Harvesting in Total Hip Replacements

Energy harvesting is a promising approach to power novel instrumented implants that have passive sensory functions or actuators for therapeutic measures. We recently proposed a new piezoelectric concept for energy harvesting in total hip replacements. The mechanical implant safety and the feasibility of power generation were numerically demonstrated. However, the power output for the chosen piezoelectric element was low. Therefore, we investigated in the present study different geometry variants for an increased power output for in vivo applications. Using the same finite element model, we focused on new, customised piezoelectric element geometries to optimally exploit the available space for integration of the energy harvesting system, while maintaining the mechanical safety of the implant. The result of our iterative design study was an increased power output from 29.8 to 729.9 µW. This amount is sufficient for low-power electronics.

A New GaN-Based Device, P-Cascode GaN HEMT, and Its Synchronous Buck Converter Circuit Realization

This paper attempts to disclose a new GaN-based device, called the P-Cascode GaN HEMT, which uses only a single gate driver to control both the D-mode GaN and PMOS transistors. The merit of this synchronous buck converter is that it can reduce the circuit complexity of the synchronous buck converter, which is widely used to provide non-isolated power for low-voltage and high-current supply to system chips; therefore, the power conversion efficiency of the converter can be improved. In addition, the high side switch using a single D-mode GaN HEMT, which has no body diode, can prevent the bi-directional flow and thus reduce the power loss and cost compared to a design based on a series of two opposite MOSFETs. Microstructure Evolution in a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Stack Quantified with Interfacial Free Energy

Degradation of electrode microstructure is one of the key factors affecting long term performance of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell systems. Evolution of a multiphase system can be described quantitatively by the change in its interfacial energy. In this paper, we discuss free energy of a microstructure to showcase the anisotropy of its evolution during a long-term performance experiment involving an SOFC stack. Ginzburg Landau type functional is used to compute the free energy, using diffuse phase distributions based on Focused Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscopy images of samples taken from nine different sites within the stack. It is shown that the rate of microstructure evolution differs depending on the position within the stack, similar to phase anisotropy. However, the computed spatial relation does not correlate with the observed distribution of temperature.

The use of biofuel is one method for limiting the harmful impact of diesel engines on the environment. It is also a way of gradually becoming less dependent on the depleting petroleum resources. New resources for producing biodiesel are currently being sought. The authors produced esters from animal fat waste, obtaining a fuel that can power diesel engines and identifying a way to utilise unnecessary waste. Does Foreign Direct Investment Influence Renewable Energy Consumption? Empirical Evidence from South Asian Countries

Economic Considerations on Nutrient Utilization in Wastewater Management

There is wide consensus that Spirulina can serve as a tool for wastewater management and simultaneously provide feedstock for biorefining. However, the economic aspects associated with its use remain a significant challenge. Spirulina cultivated in wastewater decreased the concentrations of both ammonia and nitrate and also served as a biodiesel source. Boost Voltage Single Phase Full Bridge Inverter with No Voltage Drop Based on Switched Capacitor

In this paper, a voltage-boost-type non-voltage drop single-phase full-bridge inverter connected to a switched-capacitor structure is proposed. The output voltage of the inverter is controlled by the pulse width modulation of a DSP to control the lead and break of the active switches. The full-bridge switches work at low frequency; the other switches work at high frequency. The inverter uses two capacitor modules to charge and discharge alternately so as to overcome the problem of voltage drop on the output side of the inverter in the transition stage from series capacitor discharge to parallel charge. By analyzing the charge−discharge characteristics of the RC charge−discharge circuit, the capacitor charge−discharge cycle can be adjusted to alter the output voltage within a certain range. The results from the physical construction verify the Simulation results achieved well, which demonstrates satisfactory performance that supports the verification of the above theory.

Moving Up the Electrification Ladder in Off-Grid Settlements with Rooftop Solar Microgrids

Life Cycle Cost of Electricity Production: A Comparative Study of Coal-Fired, Biomass, and Wind Power in China

Economic cost is decisive for the development of different power generation. Life cycle cost (LCC) is a useful tool in calculating the cost at all life stages of electricity generation. This study improves the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) model as the LCC calculation methods from three aspects, including considering the quantification of external cost, expanding the compositions of internal cost, and discounting power generation. The improved LCOE model is applied to three representative kinds of power generation, namely, coal-fired, biomass, and wind power in China, in the base year 2015. The external cost is quantified based on the ReCiPe model and an economic value conversion factor system. How Will the Improvements of Electricity Supply Quality in Poor Regions Reduce the Regional Economic Gaps? A Case Study of China

Electricity supply quality (ESQ) is critical for healthy economic production, and regional differences in ESQ can widen economic development gaps. To contribute to a more equitable regional development, this study first develops a Gini index of ESQ distribution to measure the inequality among different cities. Then, an econometric model based on the Cobb−Douglas production function is established to quantify the effects of ESQ on regional economy. Finally, we estimate the impacts of ESQ improvement on reducing the economic inequality. The main results show that: (1) Substantial differences exist among the regional ESQ, and the national GDP-based ESQ Gini index was 0.720 in 2018. (2) A GDP-based Lorenz curve has a higher Gini coefficient than the population-based one does, while inequalities in cites are greater than those in rural areas. This paper investigates the effect of ground and fumed silica fillers on suppressing DC erosion in silicone rubber. Fumed silica and ground silica fillers are incorporated in silicone rubber at different loading levels and comparatively analyzed in this study. Outcomes of the +DC inclined plane tracking erosion test indicate a better erosion performance for the fumed silica filled composite despite having a lower thermal conductivity compared to the ground silica composite. This study aims at evaluating the energy and environmental impacts associated with retrofitting a residential apartment to improve its vertical envelope thermal insulation. Two insulation materials, stone wool and cellulose fibers, are compared. The life cycle assessment methodology is applied assuming 1 m2 of retrofitted vertical envelope as functional unit. Moreover, to estimate the net energy and environmental benefits achievable in the retrofitted scenario compared with the non-retrofitted one, a second analysis is performed in which the system boundaries are expanded to include the building operational phase, and 1 m2 of walkable floor per year is assumed as reference. PAH and POP Presence in Plastic Waste and Recyclates: State of the Art

The presence of different pollutants in recycled plastics is reviewed in this article. The desirable circular economy of plastics should be linked to the availability of clean recycled plastics with a non-significant and small to nil amount of substances of concern. Different researchers found polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), such as brominated flame retardants (BFRs), pesticides, dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs and PBDD/Fs) in plastic recyclates. This represents an added difficulty to the effective recycling process of plastics that reduces the demand for energy and materials, in addition to posing a great environmental danger since they represent a vector of accumulation of the contaminants that will finally appear in the most unexpected products. Life Cycle Analysis of the plastic wastes recycling process indicates a great saving of energy, water and CO2 emissions.
