Prediction of Stress in Power Transformer Winding Conductors Using Artificial Neural Networks: Hyperparameter Analysis
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural networks, deep learning, electromagnetic forces, finite element method, power transformers, stress.
The purpose of this research is the evaluation of artificial neural network models in the prediction of stresses in a 400 MVA power transformer winding conductor caused by the circulation of fault currents. The models were compared considering the training, validation, and test data errors’ behavior. Different combinations of hyperparameters were analyzed based on the variation of architectures, optimizers, and activation functions. The data for the process was created from finite element simulations performed in the FEMM software. The design of the Artificial Neural Network was performed using the Keras framework. As a result, a model with one hidden layer was the best suited architecture for the problem at hand, with the optimizer Adam and the activation function ReLU. The final Artificial Neural Network model predictions were compared with the Finite Element Method results, showing good agreement but with a much shorter solution time.

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: decision-making, extreme weather, meta-level framework, policy, power system, regulation, resilience, stakeholder, United States.
Important changes are underway in the U.S. power industry in the way that electricity is sourced, transported, and utilized. Disruption from extreme weather events and cybersecurity events is bringing new scrutiny to power-system resilience. Recognizing the complex social and technical aspects that are involved, this article provides a meta-level framework for coherently evaluating and making decisions about power-system resilience. It does so by examining net-zero carbon strategies with quantitative, qualitative, and integrative dimensions across discrete location-specific systems and timescales. The generalizable framework is designed with a flexibility and logic that allows for refinement to accompany stakeholder review processes and highly localized decision-making. To highlight the framework’s applicability across multiple timescales, processes, and types of knowledge, power system outages are reviewed for extreme weather events, including 2021 and 2011 winter storms that impacted... Characterization of m-GaN and a-GaN Crystallographic Planes after Being Chemically Etched in TMAH Solution
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: channel sidewall engineering, GaN etching, ICP-RIE dry etching, Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH), UV light, vertical GaN FinFET.
This paper proposes a new technique to engineer the Fin channel in vertical GaN FinFET toward a straight and smooth channel sidewall. Consequently, the GaN wet etching in the TMAH solution is detailed; we found that the m-GaN plane has lower surface roughness than crystallographic planes with other orientations, including the a-GaN plane. The grooves and slope (Cuboids) at the channel base are also investigated. The agitation does not assist in Cuboid removal or crystallographic planes etching rate enhancement. Finally, the impact of UV light on m and a-GaN crystal plane etching rates in TMAH has been studied with and without UV light. Accordingly, it is found that the m-GaN plane etching rate is enhanced from 0.69 to 1.09 nm/min with UV light; in the case of a-GaN plane etching, UV light enhances the etching rate from 2.94 to 4.69 nm/min.

Assessment Method to Identify the Potential of Rooftop PV Systems in the Residential Districts
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat map, roof usable area, rooftop pv system, solar electricity.
The installation of rooftop PV systems in residential buildings and dwellings has increased rapidly in the past decade, and these systems have become a major source of renewable energy in many countries. This paper presents a new method of estimating the potential of rooftop PV systems to meet energy demands in residential districts by introducing a roof suitability factor. The method of assessment is based on an online tool called SunSPot, which uses a solar radiation heat map layer of building roofs and the PVSYST solar performance software. A sample of 400 houses from four suburbs considered in the Sydney City Council 2030 sustainability plan was selected to conduct the performance analysis of rooftop PV systems and develop a formula that can estimate the suburban annual energy production. The results show that if the dwelling roofs in residential suburbs could be covered by PV arrays it would produce enough electricity to exceed the local electricity demand and, in some suburbs, a... April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: flyback photovoltaic micro-inverter, flyback transformer, isolated single-stage inverter, simple control strategy.
The single-stage flyback Photovoltaic (PV) micro-inverter is considered as a simple and small in size topology but requires expensive digital microcontrollers such as Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) or Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to increase the system efficiency, this would increase the cost of the overall system. To solve this problem, based on a single-stage flyback structure, this paper proposed a low cost and simple analog-digital control scheme. This control scheme is implemented using a low cost ATMega microcontroller built in the Arduino Uno board and some analog operational amplifiers. First, the single-stage flyback topology is analyzed theoretically and then the design consideration is obtained. Second, a 120 W prototype was developed in the laboratory to validate the proposed control. To prove the effectiveness of this control, we compared the cost price, overall system efficiency, and THD values of the proposed results with the results obtained by the literature. S... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: aging detection, first-principles calculation, silicone rubber insulator, terahertz.
In this study, a method for testing the aging of silicone rubber insulators using terahertz waves in the 0.17−0.22 THz frequency band is proposed, aiming at the problem of online non-destructive testing of the aging degree of composite insulators. The relationship between the aging degree of silicone rubber composite insulators and the relative dielectric constant was studied through first-principles calculations and molecular chain scission models. In addition, the electromagnetic model of the terahertz signal incident on the silicon rubber sheet was simulated and the relationship between the aging degree of the silicon rubber and the terahertz input return loss was obtained. Eleven insulator samples with different degrees of aging were selected. In these samples, the degree of aging was calibrated according to the degree of surface deterioration and the average partial discharge voltage. The terahertz return loss measurement experiment was performed after that. Finally, the results o... [more]

Comparative Simulations of Conductive Nitrides as Alternative Plasmonic Nanostructures for Solar Cells
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: conductive transition metal nitrides, nanostructures, solar cells, theory and simulation.
Particle layers employing conductive transition metal nitrides have been proposed as possible alternative plasmonic materials for photovoltaic applications due to their reduced losses compared to metal nanostructures. We critically compare the potential photocurrent gain from an additional layer made of nanopillars of nitrides with other material classes obtained in an optimized c-Si baseline solar cell, considering an experimental doping profile. A relative photocurrent gain enhancement of on average 5% to 10% is observed, achieving for a few scenarios around 30% gain. The local field enhancement is moderate around the resonances for nitrides which spread over the whole ultraviolet and visible range. We can characterize two types of nitrides: nitrides for which the shading effect remains a problem similar to for metals, and others which behave like dielectric scatterers with high photocurrent gain.

Digital Twin Concepts with Uncertainty for Nuclear Power Applications
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: digital twin, nuclear power, uncertainty quantification.
Digital Twins (DTs) are receiving considerable attention from multiple disciplines. Much of the literature at this time is dedicated to the conceptualization of digital twins, and associated enabling technologies and challenges. In this paper, we consider these propositions for the specific application of nuclear power. Our review finds that the current DT concepts are amenable to nuclear power systems, but benefit from some modifications and enhancements. Further, some areas of the existing modeling and simulation infrastructure around nuclear power systems are adaptable to DT development, while more recent efforts in advanced modeling and simulation are less suitable at this time. For nuclear power applications, DT development should rely first on mechanistic model-based methods to leverage the extensive experience and understanding of these systems. Model-free techniques can then be adopted to selectively, and correctively, augment limitations in the model-based approaches. Challeng... [more]

Energy and Exergy (2E) Analysis of an Optimized Solar Field of Linear Fresnel Reflectors for a Conceptual Direct Steam Generation Power Plant
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Direct steam generation is a promising alternative to conventional heat transfer fluids for solar thermal power plants using linear concentrators because water and steam do not have thermal and chemical stability problems. The novelty of this study, an energy and exergy (2E) analysis, was that it was performed on several configurations of a conceptual direct steam generation solar power plant with optimized Fresnel reflectors in Agua Prieta, Mexico coupled with a regenerative steam Rankine power cycle to quantify their efficiency and establish a reference for future implementation of this technology in concentrated solar power plants in Mexico. The thermal model was assumed to be a 1D steady-state flow and validated against results in the literature. It was then applied directly to a case study to determine the size of the solar field. The design point was the lowest solar irradiance day, and evaluating the solar multiple with the highest solar irradiance, taking care not to oversize t... [more]

April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: demand-side management, electric cooking, micro-hydropower, mini-grid, Nepal, techno-economic model.
In rural Nepal, micro-hydropower plant mini-grids provide renewable electricity to thousands of communities but the plants often have poor financial sustainability. Widespread uptake of electric cooking in such communities is currently not feasible due to high peak loads and limited capacity. In this paper, we develop a Remote-Areas Multi-Energy Systems Load Profiles (RAMP)-based stochastic techno-economic model for evaluating the economic viability of off-grid communities and improving their financial sustainability by introducing new appliances, productive end uses, and demand-side management measures. The model can be used to understand community electricity demand, assess economic status, determine equitable and profitable tariff structures, and plan new connections including electric cooking promotion or new industrial machines. Detailed electric cooking load modelling functionality was developed to represent Nepali cooking practices, scalable to approximate widespread uptake of e... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: condition monitoring, deep learning, gearbox, neural networks, power transmission systems, vibroacoustic diagnostics.
This paper presents the use of artificial neural networks in diagnosing the technical condition of drive systems operating under variable conditions. The effects of temperature and load variations on the values of diagnostic parameters were considered. An experiment was conducted on a testing rig where a variable load was introduced corresponding to the load of the main gearbox of the bucket wheel excavator. The signals of vibration acceleration on the gearbox body, rotational speed, and current consumption of the drive motor for different values of oil temperature were measured. Synchronous analysis was performed, and the values of order amplitudes and the corresponding values of current, speed, and temperature were determined. Such datasets were the learning vectors for a set of artificial deep learning neural networks. A new approach proposed in this paper is to train the network using a learning set consisting only of data from the efficient system. The responses of the trained neu... [more]

DC-Link Current Harmonic Mitigation via Phase-Shifting of Carrier Waves in Paralleled Inverter Systems
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: capacitor current ripple, carrier wave interleaving scheme, DC-grid, DC-link current, harmonic mitigation, multi-converter systems, phase-shifting, unipolar sinusoidal pulse width modulation, voltage source inverters.
DC-connected parallel inverter systems are gaining popularity in industrial applications. However, such parallel systems generate excess current ripple (harmonics) at the DC-link due to harmonic interactions between the inverters in addition to the harmonics from the PWM switching. These DC-link harmonics cause the failure of fragile components such as DC-link capacitors. This paper proposes an interleaving scheme to minimize the current harmonics induced in the DC-link of such a system. First, the optimal phase-shift angle for the carrier signal is investigated using the analytical equations, which provides maximum capacitor current ripple cancellation (i.e., at the main switching frequency harmonic component). These optimally phase-shifted switching cycles lead to variations of the output current ripples, which, when summed together at the DC-link, result in the cancellations of the DC-link current ripples. The results show that when the carrier waves of the two inverters are phase-s... [more]

Feeder Topology Configuration and Application Based on IEC 61850
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: feeder topology, IEC 61850, information model, power distribution network.
Distribution automation (DA) and Internet of Things (IoT) all need the topology information of power distribution network to support some applications, such as fault diagnosis, network reconfiguration and optimization. IEC 61850 is a general communication model and standard for information exchange between intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). However, it has no mechanism for feeder topology information exchange. This paper solves this problem by developing the corresponding information model. Firstly, a feeder model is established as a container of the equipment along a distribution line. Secondly, logical models, such as terminal and connection nodes, are added to describe the physical connection relationship between the electrical equipment. Taking a circuit breaker as an example, this paper introduces how to add the terminal attribute to an existing logical node (XCBR). The physical connection between the circuit breaker and other electrical equipment is described by adding the lo... [more]

Defect Data Association Analysis of the Secondary System Based on AFWA-H-Mine
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: AFWA, fault analysis of secondary system of smart substation, H-mine, parameter optimization of association rules.
The fault data of the secondary system of smart substations hide some information that the association analysis algorithm can mine. The convergence speed of the Apriori algorithm and FP-growth algorithm is slow, and there is a lack of indicators to evaluate the correlation of association rules and the method to determine the parameter threshold. In this paper, the H-mine algorithm is used to realize the fast mining of fault data. The algorithm can traverse data faster by using the data structure of the H-struct. This paper also sets the lift and CF value to screen the association rules with good correlation. When setting the three key parameters of association analysis, namely, support threshold, confidence threshold, and lift threshold, an objective function composed of weighted average lift, CF value, and data coverage rate was selected, and the adaptive fireworks algorithm was used to optimize the parameters in the association analysis. In particular, the rule screening strategy is... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: e-cooking, life cycle assessment, PV hybrid mini-grid, PV mini-grid.
The United Nations Sustainable Goal 7, access to affordable and clean energy, is unlikely to be achieved, with an estimated 600 million people still without access to electricity by 2030. One potential route to support this goal is through the use of mini-grids to provide electricity in densely populated rural areas for which grid connection is not possible. This paper presents the results of a life cycle assessment of a mini-grid, designed for construction in Malawi. It analyses the cradle to end of use for this mini-grid configuration, for a grid sized for lighting, refrigeration and phone charging, and for a grid sized for electric cooking (e-cooking). The results suggest that for lighting configuration, the main contributors to environmental impact are the poles, the overhead cabling, and the PV panels. The use of a chromium-based preservative is the main issue for the poles, and a switch to concrete poles can deliver significant benefits. When the grid is sized for e-cooking, the... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass gasification, downdraft, hydro-char, phenomenological model, Syngas.
The development of a one-dimensional (1D) phenomenological model for biomass gasification in downdraft reactors is presented in this study; the model was developed with the aim of highlighting the main advantages and limits related to feedstocks that are different from woodchip, such as hydro-char derived from the hydrothermal carbonization of green waste, or a mix of olive pomace and sawdust. An experimental validation of the model is performed. The numerically evaluated temperature evolution along the reactor gasifier is found to be in agreement with locally measured values for all the considered biomasses. The model captures the pressure drop along the reactor axis, despite an underestimation with respect to the performed measurements. The producer gas composition resulting from the numerical model at the exit section is in quite good agreement with gas-chromatograph analyses (12% maximum error for CO and CO2 species), although the model predicts lower methane and hydrogen content i... A Frequency Adaptive Scheme Based on Newton Structure of PRRC for LCL-Type Inverter Connected with Weak Grid
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fractional delay (FD) filter, frequency adaptive (FA), Newton structure, repetitive control (RC), weak grid.
Repetitive control (RC) is gradually used in inverters tied with weak grid. To achieve the zero steady-state error tracking of inverter current and compensate the harmonic distortion caused by frequency fluctuation, a frequency adaptive (FA) control scheme for LCL-type inverter connected with weak grid is proposed. This scheme adopts a proportional resonance (PR) controller in parallel with RC (PRRC) to overcome the disadvantages caused by RC inherent one-cycle time delay. A fractional delay (FD) filter based on the Newton structure is proposed to approximate the fraction item of fs/f, where fs and f are sample frequency and grid frequency, respectively. The structure of the proposed FD filter is relatively simple; moreover, coefficients of the filter maintain constant so as not to need online tuning even when grid frequency fluctuates, which decreases the computational burden considerably. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed FA control scheme, named as Newton-FAPRRC, are... [more]

Keywords: analytical and empirical models, bifacial power generation modeling, bifacial solar panels, photovoltaic monitoring.
In this paper, we investigate the use of monofacial PV models to simulate the production of bifacial PV systems over different albedos. Analytical and empirical models were evaluated using measured data obtained from three identical bifacial PV arrays: (1) with the backside covered by white plastic, (2) with normal albedo, and (3) with high albedo. The front-and rear-side irradiances were measured in order to integrate bifaciality of the modules into the models. The models showed good performance for non-real-time monitoring, especially under clear skies, and the analytical model was more accurate than the empirical model. The heatmap visualization technique was applied to six months of data in order to investigate the site conditions on the rear side of the modules as well as the accuracy of the models. The heatmap results of the rear- and front-sides irradiances showed that the installation conditions, such as the azimuth angles of the sun and the surrounding obstacles, had a strong... [more]

Contribution of Voltage Support Function to Virtual Inertia Control Performance of Inverter-Based Resource in Frequency Stability
April 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: frequency stability, grid-following, grid-forming, inverter-based resource, PLL, RoCoF, virtual inertia.
Inertia reduction due to inverter-based resource (IBR) penetration deteriorates power system stability, which can be addressed using virtual inertia (VI) control. There are two types of implementation methods for VI control: grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM). There is an apparent difference among them for the voltage regulation capability, because the GFM controls IBR to act as a voltage source and GFL controls it to act as a current source. The difference affects the performance of the VI control function, because stable voltage conditions help the inertial response to contribute to system stability. However, GFL can provide the voltage control function with reactive power controllability, and it can be activated simultaneously with the VI control function. This study analyzes the performance of GFL-type VI control with a voltage control function for frequency stability improvement. Subject: Environment
Keywords: bioenergy, bioethanol, Biomass, forest residues, life cycle assessment, straw residues.
Understanding the influence of method choices on results in life-cycle assessments is essential to draw informed conclusions. As the climate impact of bioenergy remains a debated topic, the focus of this study is how the chosen temporal framing influences a comparison of the climate impact of utilizing residual biomass for biofuel production to that of leaving the biomass to decay. In order to compare the biofuel scenario to its corresponding reference scenario where biomass is left to decay, a variety of analytical approaches were used: using time-aggregated and time-dependent life-cycle inventories and climate-impact assessment methods, assuming biogenic carbon to be climate neutral or not, using metrics for cumulative or instantaneous climate impact, and with different time horizons. Two cases of residual biofuel feedstocks were assessed: logging residues from Norway spruce forest, and straw from wheat cultivation.
