April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diagnosis, parameter identification, Particle Swarm Optimization, short-circuit fault, support vector machine
Motors are widely used in various industrial fields as key power sources, and their importance is increasing. According to the failure occurrence rates of the parts in an electric motor, a short-circuit fault of the winding due to the deterioration of the insulation is among the most probable. An easy and effective method for diagnosing faults is needed to ensure the working condition of a motor with high reliability. This paper proposes a novel method for diagnosing a slight turn-to-turn short-circuit fault in a stator winding that involves an impulse test, parameter identification, and diagnosis. In this work, impulse tests were conducted; the measured voltage characteristics are discussed. Next, the parameter identification of the coefficients of the equivalent circuit of the impulse test was performed using particle swarm optimization. Finally, diagnosis was performed based on a support vector machine that has high classification ability, and the effectiveness of the proposed metho... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: piezoelectric, ring bender, servovalve, SimScape
In part I of this study, we experimentally and numerically investigated the pilot stage of a novel two-stage servovalve architecture. The novelty of the proposed configuration is the torque motor being removed and replaced with two small two-way two-position (2/2) valves actuated by piezoelectric ring benders, which can effectively control the opening degree of a main spool valve. With this novel architecture, the typical drawbacks of two-stage servovalves can be overcome, such as the high complexity of the torque motor and the high internal leakage in the pilot stage when the main valve is at rest in the neutral position (null). The low complexity and the negligible internal leakage of the piezo-valves are accompanied by the high response speed typical of piezoelectric actuators. The valve assessment is completed in the present study, since the entire valve architecture (main stage + pilot stage) is investigated. In particular, a simplified numerical model is developed to provide a de... [more]

Keywords: Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System, General Regression Neural Network, multi-objective, Optimization, pump as turbine
Pump-as-turbine (PAT) technology permits two operating states—as a pump or turbine, depending on the demand. Nevertheless, designing the geometrical components to suit these operating states has been an unending design issue, because of the multi-conditions for the PAT technology that must be attained to enhance the hydraulic performance. Also, PAT has been known to have a narrow operating range and operates poorly at off-design conditions, due to the lack of flow control device and poor geometrical designs. Therefore, for the PAT to have a wider operating range and operate effectively at off-design conditions, the geometric parameters need to be optimized. Since it is practically impossible to optimize more than one objective function at the same time, a suitable surrogate model is needed to mimic the objective functions for it to be solvable. In this study, the Latin hypercube sampling method was used to obtain the objective function values, the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grid-forming inverter, microgrid, Model Predictive Control, primary control
Microgrids (MGs) interest is growing very fast due to the environment urgency and their capability to integrate renewable energy in a flexible way. In particular, islanded MGs in which distributed energy resources (DERs) are connected to the infrastructure with power electronic converters have attracted the interest of many researchers of both academia and industry because management, control and protection of such systems is quite different from the case of traditional networks. According to their operation mode, MGs that power electronic converters can be divided into grid-forming, grid-feeding and grid-supporting inverters. In particular, grid forming inverters are asked to impose voltage and frequency in the MG. This paper aims to propose a model predictive control (MPC) based approach for grid-forming inverters in an islanded MG. The MPC strategy is implemented because of its capability to define the optimal control actions that contemporarily track the desired reference signals a... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: balance of plant, DEMO, electric loads, nuclear fusion, plasma, power flow, power supply, power systems
EU-DEMO is a European project, having the ambitious goal to be the first demonstrative power plant based on nuclear fusion. The electrical power that is expected to be produced is in the order of 700−800 MW, to be delivered via a connection to the European High Voltage electrical grid. The initiation and control of fusion processes, besides the problems related to the nuclear physics, need very complex electrical systems. Moreover, also the conversion of the output power is not trivial, especially because of the inherent discontinuity in the EU-DEMO operations. The present article concerns preliminary studies for the feasibility and realization of the nuclear fusion power plant EU-DEMO, with a special focus on the power electrical systems. In particular, the first stage of the study deals with the survey and analysis of the electrical loads, starting from the steady-state loads. Their impact is so relevant that could jeopardy the efficiency and the convenience of the plant itself. Afte... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: age-friendly community, ageing, smart city, smart village
In the face of the dynamic ageing of local communities, smart cities and smart villages programs should seek to ensure meeting the needs of the elderly and promoting solutions tailored to their computer literacy, digital skills, and perception capabilities. In this context we propose to approach local smart and age-friendly communities initiatives in a way that would provide responses to two contemporary megatrends: digitalization and demographic transition. We assumed that the deployment of such initiatives in local planning and governance depends on at least two conditions: demand for smart everyday products and services represented by older adults and the perspective of the local decision-makers. The paper aims to examine whether the smart city/smart village idea focused on meeting the needs of the elderly and seeking to shape age-friendly local communities and the environment could be implemented in the municipalities in Poland. The analysis of the elderly Poles’ capabilities to ab... [more]

Keywords: distribution, fire risk, particle heat transfer, shield arc metal welding, welding spatter
In this study, the thermal characteristics of welding spatters were analyzed to predict the risk of fire spread in the shield metal arc welding. The mean diameters and the distribution shapes of the particles were investigated with the variation of the distribution coefficients using the modified gamma distribution function. To quantify the heat source of the welding spatters, the previous empirical equation for the heat transfer coefficient of Ranz and Marshall was analyzed regarding the particle velocity and surface temperature. The order of magnitude for the convection and the radiation were as performed to the particles and the base metal, respectively. The results, which are only valid for Tp,m = 750 K and Tb,s = 2300 K, show that the radiation term is only 10% for a particle but the convective term is only 6% for the base metal. Finally, the simplified model for the temperature of the welding spatters was obtained and the validation results were within ±13%. The variations of ele... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: absorption chiller, electricity production, flare gas, ORC, thermodynamic performance
Every year, flare gas is responsible for more than 350 million tons of CO2 emissions. Aside from thermal and environmental pollution impacts, flare gas contributes to global warming and enormous economic losses. Thus, waste heat recovery due to flaring gas can be explored through Organic Rankine Cycle ORC systems for electricity production. In this context, the assessment of a toluene ORC system is proposed for a potential application in an Algerian petrochemical unit. The study focuses mainly on highlighting the potential and thermodynamic performances of the ORC application to produce electricity and potential cooling thanks to coupling an absorption chiller by recovering heat due to flaring gas. Such a solution can easily be implemented as an energy efficiency key solution. The ORC electrical production can meet the increasing demand of natural gas initially intended to be provided to a gas power plant and assures the major part of the Algerian electrical production.
Assessment of Wind Turbine Aero-Hydro-Servo-Elastic Modelling on the Effects of Mooring Line Tension via Deep Learning
Zi Lin, Xiaolei Liu
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, FOWT, mooring line tension
As offshore wind turbines are moving to deeper water depths, mooring systems are becoming more and more significant for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs). Mooring line failures could affect power generations of FOWTs and ultimately incur risk to nearby structures. Among different failure mechanics, an excessive mooring line tension is one of the most essential factors contributing to mooring failure. Even advanced sensing offers an effective way of failure detections, but it is still difficult to comprehend why failures happened. Unlike traditional parametric studies that are computational and time-intensive, this paper applies deep learning to investigate the major driven force on the mooring line tension. A number of environmental conditions are considered, ranging from cut in to cut out wind speeds. Before formatting input data into the deep learning model, a FOWT model of dynamics was simulated under pre-defined environmental conditions. Both taut and slack mooring configurat... [more]

In this work, the real-time mathematical models of electromechanical power systems with semiconductor converters based on the author’s method of the average voltages in the integration step are described. As well as the theoretical basics of the method, the algebraization algorithm of differential equations on a time quantum is described. This time quantum in the hybrid model is synchronized with the time quanta of signal samples of the physical part of the model. In the hybrid model, only algebraic equations of electromechanical power systems are present. Software and technical applications of the hybrid models of energy-generating blocks for selected thermal and nuclear power plants are described. In the process curve courses obtained and projected in this paper, the author’s hybrid models are illustrated. In the existing models, the nonlinearity of the electric machines and the semiconductor converters are taken into account. The numerical stability of the method of average voltages... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 emissions, econometrics, economic growth, mortality rate
It is widely discussed that GDP growth has a vague impact on environmental pollution due to carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels consumed in production, transportation, and power generation. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between economic growth, fossil fuel consumption, mortality (from cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes mellitus (DM), cancer, and chronic respiratory disease (CRD), and environmental pollution since environmental pollution can be a reason for societal mortality rate increases. This study uses the generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation technique for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) members for the period from 1993−2018. The major results revealed that the highest variability of mortality could be explained by CO2 variability. Regarding fossil fuel consumption, the estimation proved that this variable positively affects mortality from CVD, DM, cancer, and CRD. Additionally, any improvements in the human dev... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: converter topology, HVDC, hybrid converter, hybrid modulation, MMC
This paper proposes an enhanced modular multilevel converter as an alternative to the conventional half-bridge modular multilevel converter that employs a reduced number of medium-voltage cells, with the aim of improving waveforms quality in its AC and DC sides. Each enhanced modular multilevel converter arm consists of high-voltage and low-voltage chain-links. The enhanced modular multilevel converter uses the high-voltage chain-links based on medium-voltage half-bridge cells to synthesize the fundamental voltage using nearest level modulation. Although the low-voltage chain-links filter out the voltage harmonics from the voltage generated by the high-voltage chain-links, which are rough and stepped approximations of the fundamental voltage, the enhanced modular multilevel converter uses the nested multilevel concept to dramatically increase the number of voltage levels per phase compared to half-bridge modular multilevel converter. The aforementioned improvements are achieved at the... [more]

Keywords: determination of parameters, pretreatment of waste, riverbank grass, rumen fluid, sewage sludge, waste materials
Pretreatment of waste materials could help in more efficient waste management. Various pretreatment methods exist, each one having its own advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, a certain pretreatment technique might be efficient and economical for one feedstock while not for another. Thus, it is important to analyze how parameters change during pretreatment. In this study, two different pretreatment techniques were applied: thermal at lower and higher temperatures (38.6 °C and 80 °C) and biological, using cattle rumen fluid at ruminal temperature (≈38.6 °C). Two different feedstock materials were chosen: sewage sludge and riverbank grass (Typha latifolia), and their combinations (in a ratio of 1:1) were also analyzed. Various parameters were analyzed in the liquid phase before and after pretreatment, and in the gas phase after pretreatment. In the liquid phase, some of the parameters that are relevant to water quality were measured, while in the gas phase composition of biogas was me... [more]
A Frequency Estimation Method Based on a Revised 3-Level Discrete Fourier Transform with an Estimation Delay Reduction Technique

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: estimation delay reduction technique, frequency estimation, revised three-level discrete Fourier transform, sine filter
In this paper, a frequency estimation method based on a revised three-level discrete Fourier transform (DFT) with an estimation delay reduction technique is proposed. First, the input signal passes through a sine filter twice to improve the ability to decrease the level of harmonics and inter-harmonics. Secondly, the second sine-filtered signal is decomposed into two orthogonal components by DFT with a hamming window to enhance the ability to suppress inter-harmonics. The frequency of the signal is derived using orthogonal components without a zero-crossing problem, which can cause numerical estimation error. This process causes the estimation delay of three cycles and three samples in total. Therefore, the estimation delay reduction technique compensating for the phase delay of the phasor is proposed. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, several frequency changes were considered when the test signals were generated according to the IEEE PMU Standards C37.118.1a-2014. Th... [more]

Keywords: desalination, mechanical vapor compression, multi-effect distillation, multi-stage flash, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, reverse osmosis
Freshwater in off-grid islands is sourced from rain, groundwater, or mainland imports, which are unreliable, limited, and expensive, respectively. Sustainable freshwater generation from desalination of abundant seawater is another alternative worth exploring. Model-based techno-economic simulations have focused on reverse osmosis desalination due to its low energy consumption and decreasing costs. However, reverse osmosis requires frequent and costly membrane replacement. Other desalination technologies have advantages such as less stringent feedwater requirements, but detailed studies are yet to be done. In this work, a techno-economic comparison of multi-effect distillation, multi-stage flash, mechanical vapor compression, and reverse osmosis coupled with solar photovoltaic-lithium ion-diesel hybrid system was performed by comparing power flows to study the interaction between energy and desalination components. Optimization with projected costs were then performed to investigate fut... [more]

Keywords: 5G, energy management system, IEC 61850, LoRa, micro-grid, multi-agent system
Micro-grid (MG) deployment has dramatically become more popular with the high penetration of renewable energy resources (RER). This trend brings with it the merits of independent power grid clean energy resource-based systems, and simultaneously the demerits of an unstable grid due to the intermittent nature of RER. Control and monitoring of MG through robust and ubiquitous communication system infrastructure is the solution to overcoming this intermittency. There has been an increasing focus in recent years on using wireless communication technologies as a prominent candidate in holistic proposal for the micro-grid management system (MGMS). The MGMS has been developed using the multi-agent system (MAS), multi-micro-grid (multi-MG), Internet of things (IoT) integration, and cloud concepts requiring new communication specifications, which can be satisfied by next-generation wireless technologies. There is, however, a lack of comprehensive corresponding investigation into management leve... [more]

Keywords: coal dust, cyclone furnace, gasification, numerical simulations, oxy-fuel combustion, steam
This paper presents the results of the modeling of coal dust gasification using oxygen and steam in a cyclone furnace. The combustion process leads to the release of gas composed mainly of CO and H2. The composition of this gas can be controlled through changes in the content of O2 and H2O in the gasifying agent. It is possible for the process conditions adopted in the study to obtain the CO content at the level of 50% with the content of the gasifying agent O2/H2O of 50/50. In the case of the composition of the gasifying agent O2/H2O of 80/20, the H2 content was 50%. The maximal calorific value of the gas was obtained for O2/H2O 50/50 (11.2 MJ/kg).

Keywords: detailed thermal model, electronic packages, Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) metrics, thermal impedance, thermal simulation
This paper presents the Thermal Resistance and Impedance Calculator (TRIC) tool devised for the automatic extraction of thermal metrics of package families of electronic components in both static and transient conditions. TRIC relies on a solution algorithm based on a novel projection-based approach, which—unlike previous techniques—allows (i) dealing with parametric detailed thermal models (pDTMs) of package families that exhibit generic non-Manhattan variations of geometries and meshes, and (ii) transforming such pDTMs into compact thermal models that can be solved in short times. Thermal models of several package families are available, and dies with multiple active areas can be handled. It is shown that transient thermal responses of chosen packages can be obtained in a CPU (central processing unit) time much shorter than that required by a widely used software relying on the finite-volume method without sacrificing accuracy.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are low-cost solar cells belonging to the thin-film photovoltaic cell type. In this study, we studied the photovoltaic performances of DSSCs based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofibers (NFs) containing silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) under low illumination. We used the sol-gel method with the electrospinning technique to prepare the TiO2 NFs containing Ag NPs. Herein, we used two ways to add TiO2/Ag NFs to modify the photoelectrode successfully and enhance the performance of DSSCs. One way was that the TiO2/Ag NFs were mixed with pristine TiO2; the other way was that the TiO2/Ag NFs were seeded beside the TiO2 colloid layer as an additional layer on the photoelectrode of the DSSC. According to this experiment, the photovoltaic conversion efficiency of the DSSC which had TiO2/Ag NF seeded as an additional layer on the photoelectrode (5.13%) was increased by 28% compared to the DSSC without the photoelectrode modification (3.99%). This was due to the su... [more]
