Development of Nanosized Mn3O4-Co3O4 on Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Cathode Catalyst in Urea Fuel Cell
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cathode catalyst, oxygen reduction reaction, urea fuel cell
Double-oxide Mn3O4-Co3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized and anchored on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) via a single-step solvothermal method. The largest specific area (99.82 m2g−1) of the catalyst was confirmed via a nitrogen adsorption isotherm. Furthermore, the uniform coating of the Mn3O4-Co3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of the MWCNTs was observed via scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy; the uniform coating provided an effective transport pathway during the electrocatalytic activities. The rotating disk electrode and rotating ring disk electrode measurements indicated that the electron transfer number was 3.96 and the evolution of H2O2 was 2%. In addition, the Mn3O4-Co3O4/MWCNT catalyst did not undergo urea poisoning and remained stable in an alkaline solution. Conversely, commercial Pt/C could not withstand urea poisoning for long. The performance cell achieved a power density of 0.4226 mW cm−2 at 50 °C. Therefore, Mn3O4-Co3O4/MWCNT is an eff... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bootstrap sampling, building energy code compliance, building energy simulation, energy savings potential, Monte Carlo
Building energy code compliance is the crucial link between the actual energy savings and the efficiency prescribed in energy codes. A research project aiming to identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption in new single-family residential construction by increasing compliance with the building energy code was conducted in several states of the United States. The study was comprised of three phases: (1) a baseline study to document typical practice and identify opportunities for improvement based on empirical data gathered from the field; (2) an education and training phase targeting the opportunities identified; and (3) a post-study to assess whether a reduction in average state-wide energy use could be achieved following the education and training phase. We proposed a novel methodology based on large-scale building energy simulation inferred by limited field data to assess the performance of a large population of homes. This paper presents the methodology, findings, and result... [more]

Geometry Design Optimization of a Wind Turbine Blade Considering Effects on Aerodynamic Performance by Linearization
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blade geometry linearization, design optimization, simulated annealing algorithm, tip speed ratio, wind turbine blade
For a wind turbine to extract as much energy as possible from the wind, blade geometry optimization to maximize the aerodynamic performance is important. Blade design optimization includes linearizing the blade chord and twist distribution for practical manufacturing. As blade linearization changes the blade geometry, it also affects the aerodynamic performance and load characteristics of the wind turbine rotor. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the effects of the design parameters used in linearization. In this study, the effects of these parameters on the aerodynamic performance of a wind turbine blade were examined. In addition, an optimization algorithm for linearization and an objective function that applies multiple tip speed ratios to optimize the aerodynamic efficiency were developed. The analysis revealed that increasing the chord length and chord profile slope improves the aerodynamic efficiency at low wind speeds but lowers it at high wind speeds, and that the twist p... [more]

Solid State Transformers: Concepts, Classification, and Control
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: classification of SSTs, passive transformers, power electronics transformer (PET), smart grids, solid state transformer (SST)
Increase in global energy demand and constraints from fossil fuels have encouraged a growing share of renewable energy resources in the utility grid. Accordingly, an increased penetration of direct current (DC) power sources and loads (e.g., solar photovoltaics and electric vehicles) as well as the necessity for active power flow control has been witnessed in the power distribution networks. Passive transformers are susceptible to DC offset and possess no controllability when employed in smart grids. Solid state transformers (SSTs) are identified as a potential solution to modernize and harmonize alternating current (AC) and DC electrical networks and as suitable solutions in applications such as traction, electric ships, and aerospace industry. This paper provides a complete overview on SST: concepts, topologies, classification, power converters, material selection, and key aspects for design criteria and control schemes proposed in the literature. It also proposes a simple terminolog... [more]

Carbon Dioxide Gasification Kinetics of Char from Rapeseed Oil Press Cake
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 gasification, kinetics, rapeseed oil press cake, TGA
Rapeseed oil press cake (RPC) is an abundantly available and renewable agricultural waste material for the production of fuels or chemicals. In this study, the rates of carbon dioxide gasification of rapeseed oil press cake char were measured by thermogravimetric analysis measurements performed at various temperatures (800−900 °C) and CO2 mole fractions (0.10−1.00). The char was obtained by slow pyrolysis, where the dried RPC was decomposed at a temperature range of 1000 °C to obtain char free of impurities that can affect the measurements. The random pore model appeared to be suitable for describing the effect of conversion on the reaction rate. The temperature, CO2, and concentration dependence of the reaction rate were given by the Arrhenius equation and a power law (nth order) correlation. The kinetic parameters based on the experimental data were determined by a two-step estimation procedure. For the experimental conditions employed in this study, the parameters E and n were 222.1... The Microclimate Design Process in Current African Development: The UEM Campus in Maputo, Mozambique
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: city, Sustainability, sustainable development, urban form, urban microclimate design
Even if current action towards sustainability in architecture mainly concerns single buildings, the responsibility of the urban shape on local microclimate has largely been ascertained. In fact, it heavily affects the energy performances of the buildings and their environmental behaviour. This produces the necessity to broaden the field of intervention toward the urban scale, involving in the process different disciplines, from architecture to fluid dynamics and physics. Following these ideas, the Masterplan for the Campus of the University Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo (Mozambique) develops a methodology that integrates microclimatic data and analyses from the initial design model. The already validated software ENVI-met (Version 4.4, ENVI_MET GmbH, Essen, Germany) acts as a useful ‘feedback’ tool that is able to assess the microclimatic behaviour of the design concept, also in terms of outdoor comfort. In particular, the analysis focused on the microclimatic performances of a ‘C’ block... [more]

Power Substation Construction and Ventilation System Co-Designed Using Particle Swarm Optimization
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: exhaust fan, gas insulated switchgear, inlet and outlet openings, multiobjective particle swarm optimizer, power substation, synthetic noise
This study discusses a numerical study that was developed to optimize the ventilation system in a power substation prior to its installation. We established a multiobjective particle swarm optimizer to identify the best approach for simultaneously improving, first, the ventilation performance considering the most appropriate inlet size and outlet openings and second, the reduction of the synthetic noise of the ventilation and power consumption from the exhaust fan equipment and its operation. The study used building information modeling to construct indoor and outdoor models of the substation building and verified the overall performance using ANSYS FLUENT 18.0 software to simulate the air velocity and air temperature distribution within the building. Results show that the exhaust fan of the B1F cable finishing room and the 23 kV gas insulated switchgear (GIS) room optimize the reduction of horsepower by approximately 1 Hp and 0.5 Hp. The combined noise is reduced by 4 dBA and 2 dBA; t... [more]

Transient Behavior of Vertical Commingled Well in Vertical Non-Uniform Boundary Radii Reservoir
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: pressure transient analysis, rate transient analysis, type curve, vertical commingled well, vertical non-uniform boundary radii
Transient behavior analysis, including rate transient analysis (RTA) and pressure transient analysis (PTA), is a powerful tool to investigate the production performance of the vertical commingled well from long-term production data and capture the formation parameters of the multilayer reservoir from transient well testing data. Current transient behavior analysis models hardly consider the effect of vertical non-uniform boundary radii (VNBR) on transient performances (rate decline and pressure response). The VNBR may cause an obvious novel radial flow regime and rate decline type, which can easily be mistaken as a radial composite reservoir. In this paper, we present a VNBR transient behavior analysis model, the extended vertical uniform boundary radii (VUBR), to investigate the rate decline behavior and pressure response characteristics through diagnostic type curves. Results indicate that the dimensionless production integral derivative curve or pressure derivative curve can magnify... [more]

Virtual Storage-Based Model for Estimation of Economic Benefits of Electric Vehicles in Renewable Portfolios
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: EV fleet management, market aggregator, Monte Carlo simulation, Stochastic Optimization, virtual storage
The expected increase in the presence of electric vehicles raises numerous questions regarding their impact on the market relations. Depending on the agreement between the involved parties, the position of EVs changes from passive (traditional role) to active. Active EVs are beneficial for variability and uncertainty-intense modern power systems. To enable this transition, a suitable framework in the form of agreements is required in order to establish the terms and responsibilities. Following the presented agreements, we propose a novel method for evaluation of the benefits that the newly added EVs bring to the portfolio. The method comprises two steps, a Monte Carlo simulation of the EV driving/charging patterns and an optimization model for market related decision making. The method results in the estimates on economic savings resulting from adding EVs to portfolios. An illustrative example is used in order to give an idea of the range of the benefits.

Nucleate Pool Boiling Heat Transfer from High-Flux Tube with Dielectric Fluid HFE-7200
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer coefficient, high-flux tube, pool boiling, porous surface
In the present experimental study, nucleate pool boiling heat transfer measurements of two high-flux tubes (sample A and sample B) were conducted at atmospheric pressure with HFE-7200 as the working fluid. Both high-flux tubes were made from a sintered Cu-Ni (high-flux) alloy powder. The porous high-flux surface was coated inside the test tube and it is tested within the heat flux ranging from 2.6 to 86 kW/m2. The major difference between sample A and sample B was the coating thickness, where sample B (0.6 mm) was much larger than that of sample A (0.07 mm). Both tubes showed about three times enhancement in heat transfer coefficient (HTC) when compared to plain tube. Even though sample B contained a higher HTC than sample A, it also revealed a faster level-off phenomenon regarding the HTC vs. wall superheat. The major parameter which characterizes the boiling performance of high-flux tube was the ratio of coating thickness to pore diameter which also yielded different trends upon HTC... [more]

A Hybridization of Cuk and Boost Converter Using Single Switch with Higher Voltage Gain Compatibility
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC-to-DC converter, higher voltage gain, low voltage stress, non-isolated DC-to-DC converter, single switch high voltage gain converter
In the current era, the desire for high boost DC-to-DC converter development has increased. Notably, there has been voltage gain improvement without adding extra power switches, and a large number of passive components have advanced. Magnetically coupled isolated converters are suggested for the higher voltage gain. These converters use large size inductors, and thus the non-isolated traditional boost, Cuk and Sepic converters are modified to increase their gain by adding an extra switch, inductors and capacitors. These converters increase circuit complexity and become bulky. In this paper, we present a hybrid high voltage gain non-isolated single switch converter for photovoltaic applications. The proposed converter connects the standard conventional Cuk and boost converter in parallel for providing continuous current mode operation with the help of a single power switch, which gives less voltage stress on controlled switch and diodes. The proposed hybrid topology uses a single switch... [more]

Reliability-Based Optimization for Energy Refurbishment of a Social Housing Building
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: building refurbishment, discounted cash flow analysis, Optimization, polynomial chaos, reliability analysis
This paper investigates the influence of a stochastic variation of both energy and economic parameters in an optimization loop applied to a refurbished social housing building. Usually, energy and economic optimization procedures rely on the results of an underlying numerical deterministic model which influences both energy gains and economic figures. However, an analyst must always face the random variation of input and parameter data. The unknown data can represent poor initial information or data that can change in a long time; this is the case of fuel cost and economic indexes in particular. This paper deals with both problems for building refurbishment optimization, the former related to the initial state of a building, and the latter to the energy cost variability. Reliability analysis considers a stochastic variation of parameters looking for solutions that incorporate a risk level; in this case, it deals with optimization objectives related to different impacts on economic, env... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: emulated inertia, European power system, frequency response, inertia support, synthetic inertia
A significant amount of conventional power plants in the European power system is anticipated to be replaced by solar and wind power in the future. This may require alternative sources for inertia support. The purpose of the paper is to learn about the consequences on the frequency deviation after a fault in the European power system when more wind and solar are introduced and when wind is considered as a possible provider of inertia. This study quantifies the expected maximum requirement for additional inertia in the future European power system up to 2050. Furthermore, we investigated the possibility of wind power to meet this additional need by providing emulated inertia. The European power system of the EU-28 countries has been clustered to the five synchronous grids, UCTE, Nordic, UK, Baltic and Irish. Subject: Environment
Keywords: building information modelling (BIM), digital construction, energy efficiency (EE), skills, training
The development of new climate change policies has increased the motivation to reduce energy use in buildings, as reflected by a stringent regulatory landscape. The construction industry is expected to adopt new methods and strategies to address such requirements, focusing primarily on reducing energy demand, improving process efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. However, the realisation of these emerging requirements has been constrained by the highly fragmented nature of the industry, which is often portrayed as involving a culture of adversarial relationships and risk avoidance, which is exacerbated by a linear workflow. Recurring problems include low process efficiency, delays and construction waste. Building information modelling (BIM) provides a unique opportunity to enhance building energy efficiency (EE) and to open new pathways towards a more digitalised industry and society. BIM has the potential to reduce (a) waste and carbon emissions, (b) the endemic performance gap,... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy security, MODWT, OS-ELM, predictive model for electricity demand, sustainable energy management systems, time-series forecasting, wavelet transformation
To support regional electricity markets, accurate and reliable energy demand (G) forecast models are vital stratagems for stakeholders in this sector. An online sequential extreme learning machine (OS-ELM) model integrated with a maximum overlap discrete wavelet transform (MODWT) algorithm was developed using daily G data obtained from three regional campuses (i.e., Toowoomba, Ipswich, and Springfield) at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. In training the objective and benchmark models, the partial autocorrelation function (PACF) was first employed to select the most significant lagged input variables that captured historical fluctuations in the G time-series data. To address the challenges of non-stationarities associated with the model development datasets, a MODWT technique was adopted to decompose the potential model inputs into their wavelet and scaling coefficients before executing the OS-ELM model. The MODWT-PACF-OS-ELM (MPOE) performance was tested and compared w... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bioenergy, decision support system, efficiency of bio-resources, multi-criteria analysis, Sustainability
Lately, the model of circular economy has gained worldwide interest. Within its concept, waste is viewed as a beneficial resource that needs to be re-introduced in the supply chains, which also requires the use of raw materials, energy, and water to be minimized. Undeniably, a strong link exists between the bioeconomy, circular economy, bioproducts, and bioenergy. In this light, in order to promote a circular economy, a range of alternative options and technologies for biowaste exploitation are currently available. In this paper, we propose a generic methodological scheme for the development of small, medium, or large-scale units of alternative biowaste treatment, with an emphasis on the production of bioenergy and other bioproducts. With the use of multi-criteria decision analysis, the model simultaneously considers environmental, economic, and social criteria to support robust decision-making. Co-Pyrolysis of Beet Pulp and Defecation Lime in TG-MS System
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: beet pulp, char, defecation lime, flammable gasses, kinetics, pyrolysis, tar
The process of pyrolysis of beet pulp, a by-product after the extraction of raw sugar from sugar beet, with the addition of defecation lime was studied in a thermobalance coupled with a mass spectrometer. The beet pulp pyrolysis process took place completely at 600 °C, and the resulting char, tar and gas were characterized by higher heating values of 23.9, 21.6 and 7.77 MJ/kg, respectively. The addition of the defecation lime to beet pulp caused both an increase in the char production yield and a decrease in the tar production yield. At the same time, the higher heating value of char and tar decreased along with the increase of defecation lime added to the sample. The deconvolution of derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) curves allowed us to identify the basic components of beet pulp, for which the activation energy by isoconversion method was calculated. The 20 wt.% addition of defecation lime caused an increase of the activation energy by about 18%. Further increase in the defecation l... [more]

The complexity of a smart grid with a high share of renewable energy resources introduces several issues in testing power equipment and controls. In this context, real-time simulation and Hardware in the Loop (HIL) techniques can tackle these problems that are typical for power system testing. However, implementing a convoluted HIL setup in a single infrastructure can be physically impossible or can increase the time required to test a smart grid application in detail. The durability and performance of electrochemical energy converters, such as fuel cells and electrolysers, are not only dependent on the properties and the quality of the used materials. They strongly depend on the operational conditions. Variations in external parameters, such as flow, pressure, temperature and, obviously, load, can lead to significant local changes in current density, even local transients. Segmented cell technology was developed with the purpose to gain insight into the local operational conditions in electrochemical cells during operation. The operando measurement of the local current density and temperature distribution allows effective improvement of operation conditions, mitigation of potentially critical events and assessment of the performance of new materials. Measurements of Optical Properties of Smoke Particulates Produced from Burning Polymers and Their Implications
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: fire, light obscuration, mass specific extinction coefficient, polymer, smoke
A series of cone calorimetry experiments and simultaneous gravimetric sampling and light extinction (GSLE) measurements were performed to determine the optical properties (light obscuration and extinction characteristics) of smoke particulates produced from burning polymers. The polymer selected in the present study was acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene (ABS), which has a moderate smoke yield during combustion, and unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (UPVC), which has a lower smoke yield than ABS. The experiments show that the measured light obscuration for UPVC smoke particles is much lower than that for ABS smoke particles because of the low rate of smoke production during combustion. Results from the simultaneous GSLE measurements demonstrate more clearly that UPVC smoke particles represent a lower efficiency of light obscuration on a per-unit smoke mass basis, resulting in a 41.3% reduction in a mass specific extinction coefficient compared to the ABS smoke particles.
