Phase-Shift PWM-Controlled DC−DC Converter with Secondary-Side Current Doubler Rectifier for On-Board Charger Application
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current doubler rectifier, high-frequency link DC–DC converter, secondary phase-shift PWM control, soft-switching
A novel circuit topology for an on-board battery charger for plugged-in electric vehicles (PEVs) is presented in this paper. The proposed on-board battery charger is composed of three H-bridges on the primary side, a high-frequency transformer (HFT), and a current doubler circuit on the secondary side of the HFT. As part of an electric vehicle (EV) on-board charger, it is required to have a highly compact and efficient, lightweight, and isolated direct current (DC)−DC converter to enable battery charging through voltage/current regulation. In this work, performance characteristics of full-bridge phase-shift topology are analyzed and compared for EV charging applications. The current doubler with synchronous rectification topology is chosen due to its wider-range soft-switching availability over the full load range, and potential for a smaller and more compact size. The design employs a phase-shift full-bridge topology in the primary power stage. The current doubler with synchronous rec... [more]

Green Walls, a Critical Review: Knowledge Gaps, Design Parameters, Thermal Performances and Multi-Criteria Design Approaches
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building performance, building simulation, energy retrofit, green walls, Sustainability, thermal behavior, urban quality
The green wall is an engineered technology for stormwater management and climate change mitigation at the urban level. At the building scale, these energy efficiency measures are suitable for improving indoor comfort conditions and for reducing energy needs. Several guidelines are available about vertical greening systems, but these propose design parameters and performance evaluation criteria, often incomparable. In order to facilitate the implementation of proper technical standards, this paper proposes a critical review of more recent scientific investigations. All parameters for the design optimization are discussed as well as the achievable social and private benefits by taking into consideration the type of study (numerical or experimental), the climate conditions, the analysis period, all technical requirements of the green layer as well as of the back wall. The review underlines that a multi-criteria design approach is needed for green vertical systems. Thus, the paper is concl... [more]

Optimization of the TEGs Configuration (Series/Parallel) in Energy Harvesting Systems with Low-Voltage Thermoelectric Generators Connected to Ultra-Low Voltage DC−DC Converters
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy harvesting, energy measurement, series and parallel TEGs ensemble, thermoelectric generators, ultra-low voltage DC–DC converters
Solar radiation and human activity generate ubiquitous temperature gradients that could be harvested by thermoelectric generators (TEGs). However, most of these temperature gradients are in the range of very few degrees and, while TEGs are able to harvest them, the resulting output voltages are extremely small (a few hundreds of mV), and DC−DC converters are necessary to boost them to usable levels. Impedance matching between TEGs and DC−DC converter plays a fundamental role in the energy harvesting efficiency. Therefore, it is essential to determine the output power of the system in different configurations, in order to decide on the optimum TEG connection. Here, we present an electronic circuit to measure the maximum power that can be harvested with low-voltage TEGs connected to a DC−DC converter. The developed circuit is an electronic controlled load that drains the maximum current from the output of the DC−DC converter while maintaining its output voltage at the maximum allowed val... [more]

Regional Study of Changes in Wind Power in the Indian Shelf Seas over the Last 40 Years
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: north Indian Ocean, ocean renewable energy, resource assessment, wind climate variability, wind energy
Wind power variations at two heights (the surface level and turbine hub level) were investigated at 20 locations in the shelf seas of India using hourly fifth generation European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) atmospheric reanalyses of the global climate (ERA5) data covering the last 40 years (1979 to 2018). The interannual and seasonal variability in wind power was studied. The wind power density, the exceedance probability of power density and the exploitable wind resources were examined. In the Indian shelf seas, the annual mean wind power density at 10 m above mean sea level varies from 82 to 353 W/m2. Wind power density at 110.8 m is 20% to 40% higher than at 10 m above mean sea level. The study shows that the shelf seas have an abundance of wind power, with wind speeds over 3 m/s during 90% of the time at locations 1 to 3, 12 and 13, with a high occurrence of exploitable wind energy above 0.7 × 103 kWh/m2. Optimal Parameters of Volt−Var Function in Smart Inverters for Improving System Performance
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: distribution system, Optimization, photovoltaic (PV), smart inverter, volt–var function
This paper proposes a method to improve the performance of a distribution system by optimizing volt−var function of a smart inverter to alleviate the voltage deviation problem due to distributed generation connection. In order to minimize voltage deviation and line losses which represent the performance of a distribution system, this paper proposes an algorithm that optimally sets the parameters of the volt−var function. In the process of optimizing the parameters of the volt−var function, the algorithm proposed in this paper considers minimizing the contribution of the reactive power in order not to affect the output of the distributed generation. In order to apply to the field, the distribution system in South Korea considering the configuration and operation regulation was selected as a test model for algorithm verification. As a result, the system performance was successfully improved by optimally setting the volt−var function of the smart inverter which is an effective way to solv... [more]

3D Structural Optimization of Zinc Phthalocyanine-Based Sensitizers for Enhancement of Open-Circuit Voltage of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: branched alkyl chain, dye-sensitized solar cell, open-circuit voltage, phthalocyanine
We designed and synthesized two zinc phthalocyanine sensitizers (PcS27 and PcS28), substituted with branched or cyclic alkoxy chains, to investigate the structural effect of peripheral alkyl chains on the performance of dye-sensitized TiO2 solar cells. The bulky cyclic alkyl chains of PcS28 decreased the adsorption density of PcS28 on the TiO2 electrode, while the terminal branches of alkoxy chains of PcS27 did not influence the adsorption density in comparison to the previously published PcS20 with linear alkoxy chains. Under one sun conditions, PcS27 cells exhibited higher open-circuit voltage but a slightly lower energy conversion efficiency, 6.0% less than PcS20. These results suggest that the small alternation of alkoxy chains resulted in decreasing electron pushing ability of peripheral phenoxy units, giving lower short-circuit current.

Optimal Location-Reallocation of Battery Energy Storage Systems in DC Microgrids
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: battery energy storage system, economic dispatch problem, mathematical optimization, nonlinear programming formulation, optimal reallocation of batteries
This paper deals with the problem of optimal location and reallocation of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in direct current (dc) microgrids with constant power loads. The optimization model that represents this problem is formulated with two objective functions. The first model corresponds to the minimization of the total daily cost of buying energy in the spot market by conventional generators and the second to the minimization of the costs of the daily energy losses in all branches of the network. Both the models are constrained by classical nonlinear power flow equations, distributed generation capabilities, and voltage regulation, among others. These formulations generate a nonlinear mixed-integer programming (MINLP) model that requires special methods to be solved. A dc microgrid composed of 21-nodes with existing BESS is used for validating the proposed mathematical formula. This system allows to identify the optimal location or reallocation points for these batteries by im... [more]

Route Guidance Strategies for Electric Vehicles by Considering Stochastic Charging Demands in a Time-Varying Road Network
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicles, route guidance strategies, stochastic charging demands, time-varying road network
Electric vehicles (EVs) are being increasingly adopted because of global concerns about petroleum dependence and greenhouse gas emissions. However, their limited driving range results in increased charging demands with a stochastic characteristic in real-world situations, and the charging demands should be attributed toward charging stations in time-varying road networks. To this end, this study proposes guidance strategies to provide efficient choice for charging stations and corresponding routes, and it includes the time-varying characteristic of road networks in problem formulation. Specifically, we propose two route guidance strategies from different perspectives based on the charging demand information. The first strategy focuses on the effects of the number of EVs on the charging stations’ operation, and the reachable charging stations with the fewest vehicles are selected as the heuristic suggested ones. The other strategy considers the travel cost of individual drivers and sele... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Batteries, net-metering, photovoltaics
Further increases in the number of photovoltaic installations in industry and residential buildings will require technologically and economically flexible energy storage solutions. Some countries utilize net-metering strategies, which use national networks as “virtual batteries.” Despite the financial attractiveness, net-metering faces many technological and economical challenges. It could also lead to the negative tendencies in prosumer behavior, such as a decrease in motivation for the self-consumption of photovoltaic (PV)-generated electricity. Batteries, which are installed on the prosumer’s premises, could be a solution in a particular case. However, the price for battery-based storage solutions is currently sufficiently unattractive for the average prosumer. This paper aimed to present a comparison of the economic and energy related aspects between net-metering and batteries for a single case study by considering the Lithuanian context. Subject: Environment
Keywords: AHP, investments prioritization, multicriteria method, wind power
Electricity generation via renewable sources is emerging as a possible solution to meet the growing demand for electricity worldwide. Additionally, the need to produce clean energy, with little or no pollutants or greenhouse gas emission is paramount. Due to these factors, wind farms are noticeably increasing in number, especially in Brazil. However, the vast size of the country and the poor quality of its infrastructure are among several factors that make it difficult for effective decision-making to accelerate the growth of this segment in Brazil. With the purpose of assisting government agencies, regulatory agencies and other institutions in this area, the use of a multi-criteria selection method called the analytic hierarchy process is proposed here to assist in decision-making and to select priority regions for implementing wind farms. This work focuses on a case study of the state of Bahia, in which 27 territories were selected for an installation priority evaluation. Computation... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: computable general equilibrium, energy intensity, energy mix, energy subsidy, environment, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
A major energy transformation is required to prolong the rise in global temperature below 2 °C. The Indonesian government (GoI) has set a strategy to gradually remove fuel subsidies to meet its 2050 ambitious energy targets. Using a recursive dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model, the present study aimed to determine whether or not the current energy subsidy reforms would meet the targets of both energy mix and energy intensity. It also incorporated the environmental aspect while developing a source of a detailed database in the energy sector. The energy subsidy reform policy (followed by an increase in infrastructure and renewable energy investments) could be the most appropriate alternative policy if the government aims to reduce energy intensity and emission, as well as improve energy diversification without pronounced reductions in the sectorial and overall economy. However, all simulations suggested that the removal of energy subsidy does not enough in attaining the t... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy consumption, European Union, GDP per capita, renewable energy sources
The deployment of renewable energy sources (RES) is considered to be an important objective for the energy sector in the European Union (EU). The EU Directive adapted in 2009 fixed mandatory national targets for the use of renewable energy in transport as well as for the share of RES in the gross final energy consumption. Contrary to previous studies, this paper does not examine the link between the RES and economic growth but rather focuses on real gross domestic product (GDP) and the implementation of national renewable energy targets. We employ panel data models for the case of the EU-28 countries covering the period between 2007 and 2017 that yield a low and positive relationship between the impact of GDP per capita and the share of RES in the final consumption. Our results show that there is a significant causality only from real GDP per capita to the share of renewable energy in final consumption, marking the potential of developed countries to consume more RES. Long-term simulated wind power time series are therefore an essential component for understanding the temporal availability of wind power and its integration into future renewable energy systems. In the recent past, mainly power curve-based models such as Renewables.ninja (RN) have been used for deriving synthetic time series for wind power generation, despite their need for accurate location information and bias correction, as well as their insufficient replication of extreme events and short-term power ramps. In this paper, we assessed how time series generated by machine learning models (MLMs) compare to RN in terms of their ability to replicate the characteristics of observed nationally aggregated wind power generation for Germany. High-Capacity Dual-Electrolyte Aluminum−Air Battery with Circulating Methanol Anolyte
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aluminum, aluminum–air battery, anion exchange membrane, dual electrolyte, flow battery, Methanol, potassium hydroxide
Aluminum−air batteries (AABs) have recently received extensive attention because of their high energy density and low cost. Nevertheless, a critical issue limiting their practical application is corrosion of aluminum (Al) anode in an alkaline aqueous electrolyte, which results from hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To effectively solve the corrosion issue, dissolution of Al anode should be carried out in a nonaqueous electrolyte. However, the main cathodic reaction, known as oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), is sluggish in such a nonaqueous electrolyte. A dual-electrolyte configuration with an anion exchange membrane separator allows AABs to implement a nonaqueous anolyte along with an aqueous catholyte. Thus, this work addresses the issue of anode corrosion in an alkaline Al−air flow battery via a dual-electrolyte system. The battery configuration consisted of an Al anode | anolyte | anion exchange membrane | catholyte | air cathode. The anolytes were methanol solutions containing 3 M... [more]
