Cooling Potential for Single and Advanced Absorption Cooling Systems in a Geothermal Field in Mexico
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: absorption cooling systems, cooling potential, geothermal cooling
Climate change is one of the main problems humanity is currently facing due to the use of fossil fuels. At present, 20% of the total electricity consumed in buildings worldwide is for air conditioning. The development and use of thermally driven cooling systems is very important, since they can be activated by renewable energies, such as geothermal, reducing the consumption of electricity produced by fossil fuels. In this paper, we analyze a geothermal field located in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, with the aim of comparing the performance of different advanced absorption cooling systems driven by a geothermal heat source. The analysis includes the influence of water temperature obtained from an abandoned geothermal well, using a U tube heat exchanger inside the well. The results show that this well can reach temperatures from 59 °C to 190 °C, depending on the depth of the U tube and the insulation thickness. At a TE = 8 °C, the operating range temperatures were 59−80 °C, 77−110 °C, 13... [more]

Direct Dry Carbonation of Mining and Industrial Wastes in a Fluidized Bed for Offsetting Carbon Emissions
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, diamond tailings, fluidized bed, fly ash, mineral carbonation, red mud
The direct dry mineral carbonation of selected mining and industrial wastes, using carbon dioxide derived from combustion flue gas, was evaluated. Specifically, coal fly ash from two Australian brown coal-fired power plants, red mud from the refinement of bauxite into alumina, and diamond tailings were considered, due to their relevant residual alkali content. These materials were tested in a laboratory-scale fluidized bed reactor at different temperatures (300−450 °C), in a reactive environment that simulated the typical CO2 concentration in a combustion flue gas. The experimental results showed a low, but still appreciable, CO2 capture capacity for three of the tested materials, which appears to be more favorable in the lower temperature range and with relatively fast kinetics, indicating the practical relevance of the process. One of the fly ashes exhibited a different behavior; starting at 350 °C, the sorbent began to release CO2, rather than absorb it. This suggested that the sorb... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: acute toxicity, analgesia, cedar, cedarwood, in vivo testing, natural products
(Endl.) Manetti ex Carrière is an endemic tree with spiritual value, and it was used since immemorial time in folk medicine. The present study aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory (carrageenan-induced paw edema and formalin tests) and analgesic effects (hot plate and acetic acid writhing tests) of the cedarwood essential oil, as well as inspect any toxicity (acute toxicity), using several in vivo assays. Following the acetic acid writhing test and the hot plate test, the EO presented an excellent analgesic effect compared to the controls, especially with the dose of 50 mg/kg. Similar results were found while assessing the anti-inflammatory potential in the carrageenan-induced paw edema and formalin assays. The acute toxicity assessment and the subsequent monitoring of the animals, the biochemical analysis, and the relative organ weight, demonstrated a total safety of the EO. The GC/MS analysis of the composition revealed that the major compounds contained in this EO are beta-himachal... [more]

Phytosterol, Tocopherol and Carotenoid Retention during Commercial Processing of Brassica napus (Canola) Oil
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: bioactive enrichment, Brassica napus, carotenoids, phytosterols, tocopherols
(canola) seed is a rich source of phytosterols, tocopherols and carotenoids, which all have recognized health benefits, although these are reduced or lost during crude oil refinement. Many studies are now outdated, so new research to monitor bioactive retention through current processing techniques is warranted. In this work, canola seed, in-process seed, and oil samples were collected from the major stages of five commercial canola oil processes. Analysis of phytosterols, tocopherols and carotenoids indicated seed pre-treatment enhanced bioactive concentrations in the crude oil. Although the bleaching step in each process eliminated all carotenoids, high concentrations of phytosterols and tocopherols remained in the refined oil across all processes, with losses notably lower than those found in previous reports. Moreover, crude oil samples from a two-stage cold pressing process showed greatly enriched concentrations of tocopherols (+122%), sterols (+140%) and carotenoids (+217%). The... [more]

Optimal Current Allocation Strategy for Hybrid Hierarchical HVDC System with Parallel Operation of High-Voltage and Low-Voltage DC Lines
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: high-voltage and low-voltage converters, hybrid hierarchical HVDC, optimal current allocation, transmission loss function, voltage deviation
For long-distance and bulk-power delivery of new energy, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) is a more effective way than high-voltage alternative current (HVAC). In view of the current capacity disparity between line commutated converter (LCC) and voltage source converter (VSC), a hybrid hierarchical HVDC topology with parallel operation of 800 kV and 400 kV DC lines is investigated. The optimal current allocation method for hybrid hierarchical HVDC is proposed distinct from the same rated current command configuration method of high-voltage and low-voltage converters in traditional topology. Considering the transmission loss reduction of the HVDC system, a multi-order fitting function of transmission loss including LCC converter stations, VSC converter stations and DC lines is established. To minimize the transmission loss and the voltage deviation of key DC nodes comprehensively, a multi-objective genetic algorithm and maximum satisfaction method are utilized to obtain the optimal al... Influence of Materials Parameters of the Coil Sheet on the Formation of Defects during the Manufacture of Deep-Drawn Cups
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: chemical composition, classification tree, correlations, damaged cans, decision tree models, influence, mechanical parameters, model C&RT, regression tree, short cans
During the process of deep drawing of cylindrical thin-walled products from aluminum sheets, the occurrence of product defects in the form of breaking the material continuity is observed. This has a very large impact on the efficiency of production lines and the number of generated scraps. The number of defects depends on many factors, including the material and the process properties. Because the problem appears after changing one material to another, while the process parameters do not change, it was assumed that the material has the main influence on the number of defects. To reduce the number of defects, a tool is needed to predict threats to the process. Decision tree models were used for this purpose. Using the tree interaction algorithms, the influence of the chemical composition and strength parameters of the 3xxx series aluminum alloy on the number of generated defects was investigated. Increased Silicon (Si) and Iron (Fe) values generated a higher number of defects. Increased... [more]

Machine Learning Prediction of Critical Temperature of Organic Refrigerants by Molecular Topology
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: critical temperature, Machine Learning, molecular structure, refrigerants
In this work, molecular structures, combined with machine learning algorithms, were applied to predict the critical temperatures (Tc) of a group of organic refrigerants. Aiming at solving the problem that previous models cannot distinguish isomers, a topological index was introduced. The results indicate that the novel molecular descriptor ‘molecular fingerprint + topological index’ can effectively differentiate isomers. The average absolute average deviation between the predicted and experimental values is 3.99%, which proves a reasonable prediction ability of the present method. In addition, the performance of the proposed model was compared with that of other previously reported methods. The results show that the present model is superior to other approaches with respect to accuracy.

Fast Electrochemical Measurement of Laccase Activity for Monitoring Grapes’ Infection with Botrytis cinerea
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: ABTS, amperometry, Botrytis cinerea, grapes, laccase
Grapes’ infection with the fungi Botrytis cinerea is one of the major causes of economic loss in the winemaking sector worldwide. The laccase activity of grapes is considered an appropriate indicator of this type of fungal infection, and enzymatic activity higher than 3 U/mL indicates a high risk of irreversibly damaged grape must due to enzymatic browning. This work describes a fast test for the measurement of laccase activity based on a dual optical and electrochemical detection method. A paper sensor impregnated with the enzymatic substrate dye 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) provides a semi-quantitative optical measurement. While the paper sensor can be used independently, when combined with a screen-printed electrode and amperometry measurements, it enables the quantitative detection of laccase activities down to 0.4 U/mL in only 5 min. The method was applied for monitoring the artificial infection of white, rosé, and red grapes with different strains... [more]

Keywords: Adsorption, desorption kinetics, FDU-15, hydrophobic modification, mesoporous carbon, naphthalene
Naphthalene (NAP) is a typical gaseous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollutant that displays toxicological effects on biosystems. Ordered mesoporous carbon has relatively adequate adsorption capacity; however, the attached hydrophilic functional groups were proven to affect the adsorption performance in the presence of moisture. In this paper, trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) is used to carry out the hydrophobic modification of ordered mesoporous carbon FDU-15, and the adsorption and desorption properties of FDU-15 were studied. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherms of naphthalene on FDU-15 and modified FDU-15 were fitted by L-F equation, and the kinetic parameters of desorption of naphthalene on modified FDU-15 were analyzed based on the method of temperature programming desorption (TPD). The results showed that the micropore volume and specific surface area of FDU-15 were significantly increased after hydrophobically modified by TMCS, and the polar functional groups of the hydr... An Integrated Optimization Model for Industrial Energy System Retrofit with Process Scheduling, Heat Recovery, and Energy Supply System Synthesis
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: decarbonization, industrial energy system, Optimization, renewable energy supply
The urgent need for CO2 reduction is calling upon the industry to contribute. However, changes within local energy supply systems including efficiency enhancement are bound to several economical and technical constraints, which results in interfering trade-offs that make it difficult to find the optimal investment option for CO2 mitigation. In this article, a new optimization model is presented that allows to optimize the design and operation of a supply and heat recovery system and production scheduling simultaneously. The model was used for retrofitting of a small brewery’s local energy system to identify decarbonization measures for eight potential future scenarios with different technical, economical and ecological boundary conditions. The results show that the proposed cost-optimized changes to the current energy system only slightly reduce carbon emissions if decarbonization is not enforced since the optimal solutions prioritize integration of photo voltaic (PV) modules that main... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cyclic variation, influencing factors, lean combustion, natural gas engine
As the most reliable alternative energy source for traditional fuel engines, natural gas has been widely used in inland river marine engines. The natural gas engine is faced with the problem of increased cyclic variations under the condition of lean combustion. In this paper, a multi-point injection spark ignition natural gas engine is tested under different lean burn degrees to investigate the correlation between different parameters and cyclic variation, including accumulated heat release, combustion phase and burning rate. The purpose is to clarify the optimized technical route for marine natural gas engine. A new method to quantify the correlation between parameters and cyclic variation is proposed. The maximum explosion pressure of combustion and its phase are used as the parameters to characterize the cyclic variation. Different parameters are then nonlinearly fitted to it, and the R-S value of the fitting is used to quantify the correlation between parameters and cyclic variatio... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon footprint, co-production, electrical energy, Exergy, geothermal energy, life cycle assessment, oil field
In the oil and gas industry, there has not been a consistent, concerted effort to reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the supply chain. In addressing this challenge, this study evaluates the potential GHG emissions reduction that may be realized through deployment of a geothermal power co-production system in two Colombian oil fields, compared to a base case where energy needs are derived through non-renewable sources such as gas and diesel. These geothermal power co-production systems make use of organic Rankine cycle (ORC) engines to convert the heat from produced oilfield fluids into electrical energy. The energy potential of this resource is evaluated through the exergy concept, and a life cycle analysis is implemented to calculate the carbon footprint using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2013 methodology. Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, Genetic Algorithm, immune algorithm, parameter identification, wind power
The accuracy of doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) models and parameters plays an important role in power system operation. This paper proposes a parameter identification method based on the hybrid genetic algorithm for the control system of DFIG converters. In the improved genetic algorithm, the generation gap value and immune strategy are adopted, and a strategy of “individual identification, elite retention, and overall identification” is proposed. NiS1−xSex Nanoparticles Anchored on Nitrogen-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide as Highly Stable Anode for Sodium-Ion Battery
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: nickel sulfide, rGO nanosheet, Se doping, sodium-ion batteries
Nickel sulfides are regarded as one of the promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), but the sluggish electrodes kinetics and rapid capacity decay, caused by their intrinsic low electrical conductivity and high bulk expansion, greatly limit their practical application. To overcome these obstacles, nano-sized, selenium-doped, nickel sulfide particles, anchored on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide composites (NiS1−xSex@N−rGO), are rationally synthesized. The broad Na+ diffusion channels, resulting from Se doping, as well as the short Na+ transferring path, attributed from nano-size scale of NiS1−xSex particles, endow NiS1−xSex@N−rGO composites with ultrafast storage kinetics. Moreover, strong coupled effect between the NiS1−xSex and N−rGO is beneficial to the uniform dispersion of NiS1−xSex nanoparticles, improving electrical conductivity and suppressing the volume variation in charge/discharge process. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: centrifugal pump, mixed-sized particles, solid–liquid, two-phase efficiency, wear characteristics
This paper used a combination of numerical simulations and experiments to study the hydraulic performance and the wear law of a centrifugal pump when conveying mixed particle sizes. The numerical simulation was based on the Discrete Phase Model (DPM). The model was used to complete the mutual coupling between the solid particles and the flow field as well as the calculation of wall wear. The results show that under the same mass concentration, the head and the efficiency of the centrifugal pump were significantly improved with an increase in the small particle composition. Compared with transporting single-sized large particles, the wear law of the mixed particle size on the flow parts changed greatly. The addition of a certain number of small-sized particles to large-sized particles aggravated the wear of the impeller, but when the small particles occupied a relatively high proportion, the wear area of the impeller was reduced even smaller than that for the transportation of single-si... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dynamic high-type control (DHTC), fuzzy logic control (FLC), interval type-2 fuzzy logic controller (IT2FLC), multi-population genetic algorithm (MPGA), photoelectric tracking system
This paper proposes a dynamic high-type control (DHTC) method based on an interval type-2 fuzzy logic controller (IT2FLC), which is used in the photoelectric tracking system to improve the steady-state accuracy and response speed. Adding integrators to the traditional multi-loop feedback control loop can increase the system type, thereby speeding up the response speed and improving the steady-state accuracy, but there is a risk of integral saturation. Switching the type dynamically according to the system state can avoid integral saturation while retaining the advantages of the high-type. Fuzzy logic control (FLC) can dynamically change the output value according to the input change and has the advantages of fast response speed and strong ability to handle uncertainties. Therefore, in this paper, the FLC is introduced into the high-type control system, and the output of the FLC is used as the gain of the integrator to control the on-off to achieve the goal of dynamic switching type, wh... Keywords: bidirectional DC converter, frequency modulation, series resonant converter, wide voltage gain
This paper presents a soft switching direct current (DC) converter, with the benefits of bidirectional power conversion and wide-ranging voltage operation for battery charging and discharging capability. A series resonant circuit with variable switching frequency modulation is used to achieve the advantages of soft switching turn-on or turn-off of semiconductor devices. Subject: Process Design
Keywords: concrete lining, fire damage, residual compressive strength, shear-wave tomography, ultrasonic pulse velocity
In this study, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and ultrasonic shear-wave tomography are combined to measure the residual compressive strength (RCS) of small-scale lining concrete blocks and to detect inner defects in the lining structure. The characteristics of and variations in the RCS of test blocks after being exposed to elevated temperatures (200−800 °C) and constant heating times (2 h, 3 h, and 4 h) were studied. At 800 °C, the RCS values reduced by 64.4%, 69.2%, and 74.6% at heating times of 2 h, 3 h, and 4 h. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for the micro-phase analysis of the samples that had been exposed to high temperatures. The heating time and RCS as well as the SEM micro-structure relationship were compared. Finally, a tunnel lining slab sample was designed to simulate the post-fire damage inside the blocks. Additionally, shear-wave tomography with 32 probes was able to detect the ϕ10 mm void defects at a depth of 200 mm.
