March 31, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: optimal reactive power dispatch, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, uncertainty
The optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem is an important issue to assign the most efficient and secure operating point of the electrical system. The ORPD became a strenuous task, especially with the high penetration of renewable energy resources due to the intermittent and stochastic nature of wind speed and solar irradiance. In this paper, the ORPD is solved using a new natural inspired algorithm called the marine predators’ algorithm (MPA) considering the uncertainties of the load demand and the output powers of wind and solar generation systems. The scenario-based method is applied to handle the uncertainties of the system by generating deterministic scenarios from the probability density functions of the system parameters. The proposed algorithm is applied to solve the ORPD of the IEEE-30 bus system to minimize the power loss and the system voltage devotions. The result verifies that the proposed method is an efficient method for solving the ORPD compared with the state-o... [more]

Keywords: DSPACE DS1104, PEMFC, QC-HOSM, step-up converter
Fuel cells are considered as one of the most promising methods to produce electrical energy due to its high-efficiency level that reaches up to 50%, as well as high reliability with no polluting effects. However, scientists and researchers are interested more in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Thus, it has been considered as an ideal solution to many engineering applications. The main aim of this work is to keep the PEMFC operating at an adequate power point. To this end, conventional first-order sliding mode control (SMC) is used. However, the chattering phenomenon, which is caused by the SMC leads to a low control accuracy and heat loss in the energy circuits. In order to overcome these drawbacks, quasi-continuous high order sliding mode control (QC-HOSM) is proposed so as to improve the power quality and performance. The control stability is proven via the Lyapunov theory. The closed-loop system consists of a PEM fuel cell, a step-up converter, a DSPACE DS1104, SMC and... [more]

Keywords: advanced surfaces, ammonia, artificial neural networks, bubble absorption, heat and mass transfer correlations, lithium nitrate, plate heat exchanger, semi-empirical model
In this study, ammonia vapor absorption with NH3/LiNO3 was assessed using correlations derived from a semi-empirical model, and artificial neural networks (ANNs). The absorption process was studied in an H-type corrugated plate absorber working in bubble mode under the conditions of an absorption chiller machine driven by low-temperature heat sources. The semi-empirical model is based on discretized heat and mass balances, and heat and mass transfer correlations, proposed and developed from experimental data. The ANN model consists of five trained artificial neurons, six inputs (inlet flows and temperatures, solution pressure, and concentration), and three outputs (absorption mass flux, and solution heat and mass transfer coefficients). The semi-empirical model allows estimation of temperatures and concentration along the absorber, in addition to overall heat and mass transfer. Furthermore, the ANN design estimates overall heat and mass transfer without the need for internal details of... [more]

Keywords: active power filter, ESS, grid integration, power quality, STATCOM
It is getting more common every day to install inverters that offer several grid support services in parallel. As these services are provided, a simultaneous need arises to know the combined limit of the inverter for those services. In the present paper, operational limits are addressed based on a utility scale for a real inverter scenario with an energy storage system (ESS) (1.5 MW). The paper begins by explaining how active and reactive power limits are calculated, illustrating the PQ maps depending on the converter rated current and voltage. Then, the effect of the negative sequence injection, the phase shift of compensated harmonics and the transformer de-rating are introduced step-by-step. Finally, inverter limits for active filter applications are summarized, to finally estimate active and reactive power limits along with the harmonic current injection for some example cases. The results show that while the phase shift of the injected negative sequence has a significant effect in... [more]

Keywords: energy flexibility, office buildings, smart technologies, user acceptance
The current energy system is dealing with an increasing share of renewable energy that, because of its intermittent availability, can affect the effectiveness of the energy supply. To cope with the problem, buildings need to become energy flexible. According to the definition given by IEA EBC Annex 67, energy flexibility is the ability of a building to manage its demand and generation according to local climate conditions, user needs and grid requirements. Users of energy-flexible buildings play a crucial role for an effective implementation, thus user acceptance and proper behaviour are important factors. In order to understand the current level of awareness on the topic and the general acceptance of the users, this paper presents the results of a large-scale survey distributed in the office buildings of the Province of Bolzano (Italy). This study investigates the information, experience, beliefs, and desires of the building users (i.e., office employees) with concepts and technologie... [more]

The construction industry is responsible for a high percentage of the energy consumed on the planet and the emission of greenhouse gases, therefore it is considered necessary to rethink many of the processes that this industry carries out in order to reduce its environmental impact. For this, one of the paths could take into account the Life Cycle Assessment of the used materials, for which it is necessary to evaluate this aspect through indicators that allow the qualification and quantification of the weight of these environmental impacts. In this context, this article presents a methodological proposal for the quantitative evaluation of the embodied primary energy and CO2 production at each stage of the life cycle of prefabricated structural systems, taking as case studies eight prototypes from the “Solar Decathlon” competition in its editions of Europe (2014), United States (2015) and Latin America (2015), through a Simplified Life Cycle Analysis, using the Eco Audit tool from CES E... Keywords: instability, twin H-rotor vertical-axis turbines, wake, wavelet transform
In recent years, the H-rotor vertical-axis turbine has attracted considerable attention in the field of wind and tidal power generation. After a series of complex spatiotemporal evolutions, the vortex shed from turbine blades forms a turbulent wake with a multi-scale coherent structure. An analysis of the wake characteristics of twin turbines forms the basis of array optimisation. This study aimed to examine the instability characteristics of a twin-turbine wake with two rotational configurations. The dynamic evolution characteristics of coherent structures with different scales in the wake were analysed via wavelet analysis. The results show that an inverse energy cascade process occurs after the high-frequency small-scale coherent structures induced by rotation lose their coherence. This self-organising characteristic is more apparent in the quasi two-dimensional wake of a forward-moving counter-rotating turbine (Array 1) than in that of a backward-moving counter-rotating turbine (Ar... Keywords: cache-based strategies, hyperloop, multiplexing, network architecture, resource management, train-to-ground communication, wireless channel
Hyperloop is envisioned as a novel transportation way with merits of ultra-high velocity and great traveling comforts. In this paper, we present some concepts on the key technologies dedicated to the train-to-ground communication system based on some prevailing fifth-generation communication (5G) technologies from three aspects: wireless channel, network architecture, and resource management. First, we characterize the wireless channel of the distributed antenna system (DAS) using the propagation-graph channel modelling theory. Simulation reveals that a drastic Doppler shift variation appears when crossing the trackside antenna. Hence, the leaky waveguide system is a promising way to provide a stable receiving signal. In this regard, the radio coverage is briefly estimated. Second, a cloud architecture is utilized to integrate several successive trackside leaky waveguides into a logical cell to reduce the handover frequency. Moreover, based on a many-to-many mapping relationship betwee... [more]

The commonly used electrode Pt supported on a carbon (Pt/C) catalyst has demonstrated underperforming electrochemical durability in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) harsh operation conditions, especially in terms of Pt electrochemical instability and carbon corrosion. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are considered one of the best alternative catalysts of PtNPs due to their remarkable selectivity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and electrochemical stability in strong acid conditions, attributes which are ideal for practical PEMFC applications. In this work, we propose a new, facile and low-cost approach to prepare AuNPs supported on reduced graphene oxide nanocompounds (AuNPs/rGO). The morphological and structural properties of the as-prepared AuNPs/rGO were studied using various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, namely, Raman Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform In... Keywords: Chinese wolfberry, electric energy, heat pump, kinetic characteristic, solar drying
The present work investigated a solar assisted heat pump system for drying Chinese wolfberry. The kinetic characteristic was firstly analyzed through a series of lab experiments. It was concluded that the Page model was the most suitable for predicting the heat and mass transfer of the wolfberry. Based on the wolfberry kinetic model, solar collector model and chamber air model, the coupled drying system model was developed. The accuracy of the mathematic model was determined through comparing with the preliminary experimental results. The influence of operating conditions on the thermal and energy performance of the dryer for the different operating mode was discussed. The drying weight of no more than 75 kg may be preferable in the stand-alone solar drying mode, and less than 15 h was needed to be dried. The electric energy consumption in the solar assisted the heat pump drying mode was lower than that in the stand-alone heat pump mode, and it was recommended that about 50 kg of wolfb... [more]

Keywords: electrospinning, microfibers, SAPO-34, water adsorption
Nowadays, waste thermal energy represents a huge quantity of energy that, in most cases, is unfortunately dispersed rather than recovered. Although it is well known that its recovery could result in a considerable impact reduction of human activities on the environment, it is still a challenging issue. In view of this, absorption chillers and heat pumps, based on the use of porous materials capable of reversibly adsorbing and desorbing water vapor, can be considered among the preferred systems to recover waste thermal energy, especially at medium−low temperatures. This study deals with the preparation and performance of a new generation of advanced adsorbent materials specifically produced as coatings for water adsorption systems driven by low temperature heat sources (around 150 °C). The proposed coating consists of hybrid SAPO-34/polyacrilonitrile microfibers directly deposited on the surface to be coated by means of the electrospinning technique. Their zeolite morphology and concent... [more]

In recent years, the fight against global warming and therefore CO2 reduction have become the most important issue for humanity. As a result, volatile sources of energy—like wind and solar power—are penetrating the electrical grid and therefore an increased demand on storage capacities is required. At the TU Wien Institute for Energy Systems and Thermodynamics, a Fluidization Based Particle Thermal Energy Storage (FP-TES) working with bulk material as a sensible storage material is developed. In this paper, the concept and an experimental study of the cold test rig is presented. By means of various pressure measurements, a novel concept of particle transport based on advanced fluidization technology without any mechanical transport devices is investigated. Moreover, a mathematical correlation between the pressure gradients and the particle mass flow is found. Overall, the experimental study provides a full proof of concept and functionality of the novel energy storage system.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: DC voltage, diagnostics, high voltage insulation, partial discharges
Understanding a partial discharge mechanism at direct current (DC) is an actual research topic that requires both modeling, simulations and measurements. This paper describes an influence of insulating material properties on partial discharges at DC voltage. Modifications of the traditional model reflecting the conditions of partial discharges (PD) inception and post discharge processes at DC voltage have been proposed. The aim was to show the partial discharge mechanisms and draw attention to the role of parameters of insulation materials adjacent to the cavity at DC voltage. The investigations were performed on two kinds of dielectric material used in power cables. Various combinations of specimens were designed to reveal the effect of the material resistivity on the PD activity. Key observations referred to the impact of the void adjacent material resistance on the partial discharge inception voltage threshold at DC voltage. The modified PD model was applied to analyze both inceptio... [more]

Keywords: continuous and reliable operation, data center, Machine Learning, server room, temperature environment, temperature prediction
Data centers (DCs) are becoming increasingly important in recent years, and highly efficient and reliable operation and management of DCs is now required. The generated heat density of the rack and information and communication technology (ICT) equipment is predicted to get higher in the future, so it is crucial to maintain the appropriate temperature environment in the server room where high heat is generated in order to ensure continuous service. It is especially important to predict changes of rack intake temperature in the server room when the computer room air conditioner (CRAC) is shut down, which can cause a rapid rise in temperature. However, it is quite difficult to predict the rack temperature accurately, which in turn makes it difficult to determine the impact on service in advance. In this research, we propose a model that predicts the rack intake temperature after the CRAC is shut down. Specifically, we use machine learning to construct a gradient boosting decision tree mo... Keywords: carbon budget, deep decarbonization, degrowth, energy descent, epistemic humility, post-carbon, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Tainter, Tradable Energy Quotas (TEQs), voluntary simplification
This paper reviews and analyses a decarbonization policy called the Tradable Energy Quotas (TEQs) system developed by David Fleming. The TEQs system involves rationing fossil fuel energy use for a nation on the basis of either a contracting carbon emission budget or scarce fuel availability, or both simultaneously, distributing budgets equitably amongst energy-users. Entitlements can be traded to incentivize demand reduction and to maximize efficient use of the limited entitlements. We situate this analysis in the context of Joseph Tainter’s theory about the development and collapse of complex societies. Tainter argues that societies become more socio-politically and technologically ‘complex’ as they solve the problems they face and that such complexification drives increased energy use. For a society to sustain itself, therefore, it must secure the energy needed to solve the range of societal problems that emerge. However, what if, as a result of deep decarbonization, there is less en... [more]

Keywords: electric feeder, hosting capacity, photovoltaic, volt-var curve, voltage management
The benefits and risks associated with Volt-Var Curve (VVC) control for management of voltages in electric feeders with distributed, roof-top photovoltaic (PV) can be defined using a stochastic hosting capacity analysis methodology. Although past work showed that a PV inverter’s reactive power can improve grid voltages for large PV installations, this study adds to the past research by evaluating the control method’s impact (both good and bad) when deployed throughout the feeder within small, distributed PV systems. The stochastic hosting capacity simulation effort iterated through hundreds of load and PV generation scenarios and various control types. The simulations also tested the impact of VVCs with tampered settings to understand the potential risks associated with a cyber-attack on all of the PV inverters scattered throughout a feeder. The simulation effort found that the VVC can have an insignificant role in managing the voltage when deployed in distributed roof-top PV inverters... [more]

Keywords: borehole heat exchanger depth, detached residence, ground source heat pump system, Japan, suitable areas
Evaluation of appropriate areas to introduce a closed-loop ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system in the case of a standard detached residence was conducted in Akita Plain, Japan. Depth of borehole heat exchanger (BHE) required to use a GSHP system was taken as the suitability index, which is simpler for the general public to understand and to promote the system. Heating and cooling loads of the standard size detached residence were calculated based on the 2013 Energy Conservation Standard. To estimate BHE depths and estimate a suitable area, identical 3D BHE models were constructed at 30 points in the plain. Required BHE depths were determined by performing heat exchange simulations at each location using the calculated loads and heat exchange rates. A suitability map showing distribution of the required BHE depths was prepared. BHE depths were shorter in the north-western area compared to the other parts, implying that the coastal lowlands in this area are more suitable for closed-loo... [more]

Keywords: flammability limit, high-temperature reaction, initial combustion period, n-butanol, reactivity stratification
The impact of premixed n-butanol mixture on the heat release rate was investigated based on a modified light-duty diesel engine. The results show that reactivity stratification is formed in the cylinder through n-butanol port fuel injection (PFI) and diesel direct injection (DI). The initial heat release rate of the diesel/butanol dual-fuel combustion is restrained due to the low ignitability of butanol and the high volatility. Because of the auto-ignition of diesel, premixed n-butanol undergoes a high-temperature reaction, which has an active influence on the heat releasing of diesel/butanol dual-fuel combustion. With the increase of the amount of premixed n-butanol injected, the heat release rate in the initial combustion period has a critical value. When the n-butanol injection quantity is less than 13 mg/cycle, the initial heat release rate of dual-fuel combustion is lower than the pure diesel combustion because the lean premixed n-butanol/air mixture limits the flame propagation.... The spontaneous combustion of electric vehicles occurs frequently, and the main reason is the thermal runaway of a lithium-ion battery. In order to prevent the heat that is produced in the use of a lithium-ion battery out of control, this study proposed a coolant circulation cooling system, that is, the heat generated by the lithium-ion battery is transferred to heat sinks through aluminum plates and copper rods, and then dissipated through the coolant. Based on a CALB-LB5F73 LiFePO4 battery pack, experiments with the coolant circulation cooling system were conducted to study the temperature rise characteristics at different ambient temperatures. The temperature of the battery pack was still close to the upper limit of permitted temperature when the ambient temperature reached 313 K. Further improvement, increasing the diameter of copper rod of the system was proposed to enhance heat dissipation and simulations with this scheme were completed. The findings show that the cooling system... [more]
Investigating the Width of Isolated Coal Pillars in Deep Hard-Strata Mines for Prevention of Mine Seismicity and Rockburst

Keywords: compression, isolated coal pillar, limited deflection, microseismic monitoring, mine seismicity, rockburst
In deep mines, a reasonable design of the widths of isolated coal pillars (ICPs) is critically important, particularly for hard-strata mines. This is because the frequent occurrence of mine seismicity (MS) and rockburst in deep mines often arises from the inappropriate widths of the remnant ICPs. To address this problem, this paper takes the ICP of Yingpanhao Coal Mine in Inner Mongolia in China as the engineering case study and then presents a mechanical model to illuminate the occurrence mechanism of MS induced by the mining on both sides of ICPs. The results indicate that, after the mining on both sides of ICPs, the ICPs will produce a vertical compressive deformation, and the overlying high main key stratum (MKS) will experience a flexure deformation. When the limited deflection of MKS is less than the compression of ICPs, the MKS will be fractured, and the released energy may lead to MS. Based on the mechanism model, a design criterion is proposed for ICP widths; this criterion ca... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, biomethane, integration, solar thermal energy
Industrial anaerobic digestion requires low temperature thermal energy to heat the feedstock and maintain temperature conditions inside the reactor. In some cases, the thermal requirements are satisfied by burning part of the produced biogas in devoted boilers. However, part of the biogas can be saved by integrating thermal solar energy into the anaerobic digestion plant. We study the possibility of integrating solar thermal energy in biowaste mesophilic/thermophilic anaerobic digestion, with the aim of reducing the amount of biogas burnt for internal heating and increasing the amount of biogas, further upgraded to biomethane and injected into the natural gas grid. With respect to previously available studies that evaluated the possibility of integrating solar thermal energy in anaerobic digestion, we introduce the topic of economic sustainability by performing a preliminary and simplified economic analysis of the solar system, based only on the additional costs/revenues.
