April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: experimental campaign, in-service monitoring, indoor comfort, luminous performance, solar control film, thermal performance
The global increase in energy needs and environmental awareness for a more efficient energy use have boosted building rehabilitation to decrease energy consumption. The installation of solar control films (SCFs) in buildings with large glazing façades makes it possible to reduce excessive solar gains through the glazing. The main purpose of the work is to assess, with field experimental data, the thermal and luminous performances of double-glazing units with SCFs installed in office rooms, in Lisbon. An experimental campaign was carried out simultaneously in three adjacent offices: one with a highly reflective SCF (external installation), one with a reflective SCF (internal installation) and one without an SCF. The exterior SCF showed the best thermal performance with reductions in the peak indoor air temperature of up to 6.9 and 2.3 °C during the representative days of the heating and cooling periods, respectively, increasing thermal comfort mainly during the cooling period. The inter... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: economic feasibility, floating offshore wind farm, levelized cost of energy, permanent magnet synchronous generator, superconducting synchronous generator
The biggest obstacle to using a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) for a floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) is the weight. A superconducting synchronous generator (SCSG) can be an alternative to this problem. In this paper, first, the weight and volume of a 10 MW class PMSG and SCSG for a large floating offshore wind farm (FOWF) were compared. Reflecting this, the economic feasibility of a 200 MW class FOWF based on a semi-submersible platform was compared and analyzed. The levelized cost of energy (LCOE) was used to compare the economics of the two types of FOWF, and the LCOE of the SCSG type FOWF was 6 (USD/MWh) more expensive than that of the PMSG type FOWF. However, if the superconducting wire price is reduced by 40% compared to the current price, the economic feasibility of the SCSG type FOWF can be secured. Considering only the weight, the SCSG type FOWF is far superior to the PMSG type FOWF. With the trend of falling superconducting wire prices and improving critic... [more]

Keywords: closed hydraulic system (CHS), electro-hydraulic servo pump control system (EHSPCS), permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), temperature field, thermal balance
The electro-hydraulic servo pump control system (EHSPCS) is a high-performance control unit that integrates a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and a closed hydraulic system (CHS). The design features of high integration and a high power-weight ratio lead to the poor heat dissipation capacity and high thermal balance temperature of the system. Excessive temperature will seriously affect the system’s performance and service life. Therefore, the thermal balance analysis method of the EHSPCS under different loads and different wind speeds was proposed in this paper. Firstly, the PMSM and CHS were taken as research objects to analyze the heating source of the system. The thermal power model was established, and the calculation was performed. The variation rule of the thermal power generated by each component with the load torque under the typical rotating speed was obtained. Secondly, the system’s temperature field thermal balance solution model was established. ANSYS and AMESim so... [more]

Keywords: metamaterials, power transfer efficiency, wireless power transfer
In a wireless power transfer (WPT) system, the power transfer efficiency (PTE) decreases sharply with the increase in transfer distance. Metamaterials (MMs) have shown great potential to enhance PTE in mid-range WPT systems. In this paper, we propose two MM slabs of a 3 × 3 array to enhance the magnetic coupling. The MM unit cell was designed by using square spiral patterns on a thin printed circuit board (PCB). Moreover, the asymmetric four-coil WPT system was designed and built based on the practical application scenario of wireless charging for unmanned devices. The simulation and experimental results show that two MM slabs can enhance power transmission capability better than one MM slab. By optimizing the position and spacing of two MM slabs, the PTE was significantly improved at a mid-range distance. The measured PTEs of a system with two MM slabs can reach 72.05%, 64.33% and 49.63% at transfer distances of 80, 100 and 120 cm. When the transfer distance is 100 cm, the PTE of a sy... [more]

This paper concerns the problem of modelling electrical, thermal and optical properties of multi-colour power light-emitting diodes (LEDs) situated on a common PCB (Printed Circuit Board). A new form of electro-thermo-optical model of such power LEDs is proposed in the form of a subcircuit for SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuits Emphasis). With the use of this model, the currents and voltages of the considered devices, their junction temperature and selected radiometric parameters can be calculated, taking into account self-heating phenomena in each LED and mutual thermal couplings between each pair of the considered devices. The form of the formulated model is described, and a manner of parameter estimation is also proposed. The correctness and usefulness of the proposed model are verified experimentally for six power LEDs emitting light of different colours and mounted on an experimental PCB prepared by the producer of the investigated devices. Verification was perform... [more]

In this contribution, measurement data of phase, neutral, and ground currents from real low voltage (LV) feeders in Germany is presented and analyzed. The data obtained is used to review and evaluate common modeling approaches for LV systems. An alternative modeling approach for detailed cable and ground modeling, which allows for the consideration of typical German LV earthing conditions and asymmetrical cable design, is proposed. Further, analytical calculation methods for model parameters are described and compared to laboratory measurement results of real LV cables. The models are then evaluated in terms of parameter sensitivity and parameter relevance, focusing on the influence of conventionally performed simplifications, such as neglecting house junction cables, shunt admittances, or temperature dependencies. By comparing measurement data from a real LV feeder to simulation results, the proposed modeling approach is validated.

Keywords: DEAP actuator, dielectric elastomer actuator, FEM model, soft pneumatic spring
Dielectric electroactive actuators are novel and significant smart actuators. The crucial aspect of construction of these devices is the bias mechanism. The current literature presents three main types of biases used in the construction of the DEAP actuators. In these solutions, the bias is caused by the action of a spring, a force of a permanent magnet or an applied mass. The purpose of this article is to present a novel type of DEAP bias mechanism using soft pneumatic spring. In contrast to the solutions presented so far, the soft pneumatic spring has been equipped with a sensor that measures the variable pressure of its inner chamber. We performed the modeling process of a soft pneumatic spring with the finite element method to predict its mechanical behavior. Furthermore, a prototype of the soft spring was molded and used to construct a dielectric electroactive polymer actuator. The principle of operation has been confirmed by the experiments with measurement of static and dynamics... [more]

Keywords: electromagnetic field, electromagnetic interference, light rail, radiated emission, wireless power transfer
The high-power wireless power transfer (WPT) system in railways does not require physical contact to transfer electrical power, is electrically safe, and reduces maintenance costs from wear and tear. However, a high-power system generates a strong magnetic field that can result in problems of electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure and electromagnetic interference (EMI). In this study, EMF and EMI were measured at various positions under in-motion environment conditions for a 1-MW WPT light rail transit system. The measured maximum EMF was 2.41 μT, which is lower than the international guideline of 6.25 μT for the various locations with a potential presence of passengers. The measured EMI also satisfied international standards in the frequency range of 150 kHz−1 GHz.

In this paper, the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) concept is utilized in the controller of the grid-connected dual two-level voltage source inverter (DTL VSI). First, the topology of the VSG and the DTL VSI are presented. Then, the state-space equations of the DTL VSI and the grid-connected two-level voltage source inverter (TL VSI), regarding the presence of the phase-locked loop (PLL) and the VSG, are given. Next, the small-signal modeling of the DTL VSI and the TL VSI is realized. Eventually, the stability enhancement in the DTL VSI compared with the TL VSI is demonstrated. In the TL VSI, large values of virtual inertia could result in oscillations in the power system. However, the ability of the DTL VSI in damping oscillations is deduced. Furthermore, in the presence of nonlinear loads, the potentiality of the DTL VSI in reducing grid current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is evaluated. Finally, by using a proper reference current command signal, the abilities of the DTL VSI... [more]

Keywords: efficiency maximization, inductive power transfer, numerical analysis, wireless power transfer
The article presents an analysis of the maximum efficiency and maximum load power, which are available to obtain in periodic wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. The numerical computations of the proposed WPT structures are performed using the finite element method and branch current method. Two theoretical models are discussed, i.e., a numerical model with simplified structure and boundary conditions as well as an equivalent circuit model is proposed to solve WPT systems with many magnetically coupled planar coils. A multivariate analysis is performed, which takes into account the variability of the number of turns, distance between a transmitting and receiving coil, and the frequency of an energy source. The outputs, such as overall efficiency, power of the source and power transferred to a load are discussed. The formulas for the load impedance required to maximize the efficiency or load power, which are taking into account the electrical parameters of the system resulting from it... [more]

The energy consumption of purely convective (i.e., various air volume (VAV) mixing ventilation) and combined radiant and convective HVAC systems (chilled ceiling combined with mixing ventilation—CCMV or personalized ventilation—CCPV) was investigated with multi-variant simulations carried out the IDA Indoor Climate and Energy software. We analyzed three different climates: temperate, hot and humid, and hot and dry. Our results show that the use of CCPV substantially reduced energy consumption compared to the conventional VAV system in hot climates. We also show that increasing the room temperature to 28 °C is an effective energy-saving strategy that can reduce consumption by as much as 40%. In the temperate climate, the VAV system was preferable because it used less energy as it benefited from outdoor air free-cooling. The control strategy of the supply temperature of personalized air had an impact on the energy demand of the HVAC system. The most efficient control strategy of the CCPV... [more]

Permanent magnet Vernier machine (PMVM) is a strong candidate for direct-drive applications in low-speed region because its power characteristic is higher than conventional permanent magnet machine (PMM). In this paper, the design of a dual-stator PMVM (DSPMVM) with spoke-type rotor is introduced. As a radial motor with dual-stator configuration, one on the outer and inner side, the rotor is equipped with support bars for practical and simple manufacturing, which is the aim of this study. The characteristics and performance of the proposed machine with and without the support bar are examined with finite element analysis (FEA). The DSPMVM and the support were manufactured and tested through experiments to verify proposed structure. Both simulation and experiment results show that there is little to no difference in performance when the support bar is equipped. Furthermore, the average deviation between simulation and experiment results is approximately 7% which is within the acceptable... [more]

This paper proposes a wireless power transfer (WPT) system by placing repeater coils to transfer power to multiple loads for the internet of things (IoT) devices and sensors in smart grid applications. The proposed system intermediate resonators (repeaters) not only function as power relays to enhance the transfer distance but also supplies power to its load attached to them. Equal power distribution and load-independent characteristics were obtained without efficiency degradation when any one of the loads was changed during system operation. Identical high-quality factor coils were designed using Litz-wire to reduce the skin effect. The coil size was 15.5 cm × 15.5 cm and the four relays achieved total efficiency of 51.7%, delivering 2 W power and output voltage of 5 V to each load with a total power transfer distance of 62 cm.

This paper concentrates on a robust resonant control strategy of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for electric drivers with model uncertainties and external disturbances to improve the control performance of the current loop. Firstly, to reduce the torque ripple of PMSM, the resonant controller with fractional order (FO) calculus is introduced. Finally, by combining the two control methods, this study proposes an enhanced Robust-TDOF regulation method, named as the robust two degrees-of-freedom resonant controller (Robust-TDOFR), to guarantee the robustness of model uncertainty and to further improve the performance with minimized periodic torque ripples. Meanwhile, a tuning method was constructed followed by stability and robust stability analysis. Furthermore, the proposed Robust-TDOFR control method was applied in the current loop of a PMSM to suppr... [more]

A routine cone calorimeter procedure, the theoretical analysis method, based on a set of ignitability data from the cone calorimeter, has been performed. The five sets of ignition times at different irradiance levels were used for obtaining experimental data needed for analysis. The cone calorimeter tests were performed with horizontal specimens of the size 100 mm × 100 mm consisting of eight pieces of commercial poly(vinyl chloride) coaxial power cable. Specimen combustion was carried out under external heat flux of constant values equal to 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 kW·m−2, respectively. Standard fire parameters and time to ignition were used for analysis. The results indicate that for each fire parameter, a rising trend with an increase in radiant heat flux has been observed. It was shown that the use of poly(vinyl chloride)-based cables is a potential fire safety hazard due to the emission of heat and a large amount of acid smoke. Quintiere’s theory has been shown as a useful tool for f... [more]

Keywords: DC-DC buck converter, load-dependent efficiency control, pulse frequency module, pulse width modulation, selectable adaptive on-time
This paper presents a dual-mode DC-DC buck converter including a load-dependent, efficiency-controllable scheme to support multi-purpose IoT applications. For light-load applications, a selectable adaptive on-time pulse frequency modulation (PFM) control is proposed to achieve optimum power efficiency by selecting the optimum switching frequency according to the load current, thereby reducing unnecessary switching losses. When the inductor peak current value or converter output voltage ripple are considered in some applications, its on-time can be adjusted further. In heavy-load applications, a conventional pulse width modulation (PWM) control scheme is adopted, and its gate driver is structured to reduce dynamic current, preventing the current from shooting through the power switch. A proposed dual-mode buck converter prototype is fabricated in a 180 nm CMOS process, achieving its measured maximum efficiency of 95.7% and power density of 0.83 W/mm2.

Three-phase inverters are widely used in grid-connected renewable energy systems. This paper presents a new control methodology for grid-connected inverters using an adaptive fuzzy control (AFC) technique. The implementation of the proposed controller does not need prior knowledge of the system mathematical model. The capabilities of the fuzzy system in approximating the nonlinear functions of the grid-connected inverter system are exploited to design the controller. The proposed controller is capable to achieve the control objectives in the presence of both parametric and modelling uncertainties. The control objectives are to regulate the grid power factor and the dc output voltage of the photovoltaic systems. The closed-loop system stability and the updating laws of the controller parameters are determined via Lyapunov analysis. The proposed controller is simulated under different system disturbances, parameters, and modelling uncertainties to validate the effectiveness of the design... [more]

Keywords: model-free super-twisting nonlinear sliding mode control (MFSTNLSMC), permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), smoothing extended state observer (SESO)
This paper proposes a novel model-free super-twisting nonlinear sliding mode control (MFSTNLSMC) strategy with an improved smoothing extended state observer (SESO) for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. First of all, the improved SESO is introduced to estimate the unknown term of the PMSM ultra-local model. Secondly, a novel nonlinear sliding mode surface (NLSMS) is designed, which can effectively overcome the disadvantages of simple and rough signal processing of the conventional linear sliding mode surface. At the same time, a super-twisting (ST) structure is chosen to suppress the chattering phenomenon and improve system robustness. Then, the Lyapunov stability theorem is used to prove the stability of the proposed control algorithm. Finally, both comparative simulations and experimental demonstrations verify the excellent speed tracking performance and robustness of the proposed control strategy.

Subject: Other
Keywords: electric drive, permanent magnet synchronous motor, wheel hub motor
Decreasing the mass of a wheel hub motor by improving the design of a motor’s electromagnetic circuit is discussed in this paper. The authors propose to increase the number of magnetic pole pairs. They present possibilities of mass reduction obtained by these means. They also analyze the impact of design changes on losses and temperature distribution in motor elements. Lab tests of a constructed prototype, as well as elaborated conjugate thermal-electromagnetic models of the prototype motor and modified motor (i.e., motor with increased number of magnetic poles) were used in the investigation. Simulation models were verified by tests on the prototype. Results of calculations for two motors, differing by the number of pair poles, were compared over a wide operational range specific to the motor application in the electric traction. A detailed analysis of the operational range for these motors was also made.

This paper deals with the potentials of a Hybrid-Excitation Permanent-Magnet (HEPM) machine. The HEPM machine is characterized by a rotor including both permanent magnets (PMs) and excitation coils. The PMs produce a constant flux at the air gap of the machine, while an excitation current is supplied so as to regulate such a flux. A flux increase could be necessary during transient overload operations, while a flux decrease is useful during Flux-Weakening (FW) actions to operate at speeds higher than the nominal speed. Torque, power, efficiency, flux density and losses of an interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor and an HEPM motor are analyzed in detail. It is shown that this excitation winding produces a great advantage in terms of torque and power performance during the operations at speeds higher than the nominal speed. Despite the additional rotor losses, it is shown that there is a higher efficiency.

This paper presents a complete design methodology of a Class-E inverter for capacitive wireless power transfer (CWPT) applications, focusing on the capacitance coupling influence. The CWPT has been investigated in this paper, because most of the literature refers to inductive power transfer (IWPT). However, CWPT in perspective can result in lower cost and higher reliability than IWPT, because it does not need coils and related shields. The Class-E inverter has been selected, because it is a single switch inverter with a grounded MOSFET source terminal, and this leads to low costs and a simple control strategy. The presented design procedure ensures both zero voltage switching (ZVS) and zero derivative switching (ZDS) conditions at an optimum coupling coefficient, thus enabling a high transmission and conversion efficiency. The novelties of the proposed method are that the output power is boosted higher than in previous papers available in the literature, the inverter is operated at a h... [more]

Dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) systems are becoming increasingly important for on-the-move electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions, to overcome range anxiety and compensate for the consumed energy while the EV is in motion. In this work, a DWPT EV charging system is proposed to be implemented on a straight road stretch such that it provides the moving EV with energy at a rate of 308 Wh/km. This rate is expected to compensate for the vehicle’s average energy consumption and allow for additional energy storage in the EV battery. The proposed charging system operates at an average power transfer efficiency that is higher than 90% and provides good lateral misalignment tolerance up to ±200 mm. Details of the proposed system’s design are presented in this paper, including EV specifications, inductive link and compensation network design and power electronic circuitry.

A modeling of a turbo air compressor system (TACS), with a multi-level inverter for driving variable speed, combining an electrical model of an electric motor drive system (EMDS) and a mechanical model of a turbo air compressor, is essential to accurately analyze dynamics characteristics. Compared to the mechanical model, the electrical model has a short sampling time due to the high frequency switching operation of the numerous power semiconductors inside the multi-level inverter. This causes the problem of increased computational time for dynamic characteristics analysis of TACS. To solve this problem, the conventional model of the multi-level inverter has been proposed to simplify the switching operation of the power semiconductors, however it has low accuracy because it does not consider pulse width modulation (PWM) operation. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved modeling of the multi-level inverter for TACS to reduce computational time and improve the accuracy of electrical... [more]
