Improving Prediction Accuracy Concerning the Thermal Environment of a Data Center by Using Design of Experiments
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air-conditioning, air-management metrics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), data center, design of experiments (DOE), energy conservation, prediction accuracy.
In data centers, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) consumes 30−40% of total energy consumption. Of that portion, 26% is attributed to fan power, the ventilation efficiency of which should thus be improved. As an alternative method for experimentations, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used. In this study, “parameter tuning”—which aims to improve the prediction accuracy of CFD simulation—is implemented by using the method known as “design of experiments”. Moreover, it is attempted to improve the thermal environment by using a CFD model after parameter tuning. As a result of the parameter tuning, the difference between the result of experimental-measurement results and simulation results for average inlet temperature of information-technology equipment (ITE) installed in the ventilation room of a test data center was within 0.2 °C at maximum. After tuning, the CFD model was used to verify the effect of advanced insulation such as raised-floor fixed panels and show th... [more]

Widespread dissemination of electric mobility is highly dependent on the power converters, storage systems and renewable energy sources. The efficiency and reliability, combined with the emerging and innovative technologies, are crucial when speaking of power converters. In this paper the interleaved dc−dc topology has been considered for EV charging, due to its improved reliability. The efficiency comparison of the SiC-MOSFET and Si-IGBT-based converters has been done on wide range of switching frequency and output inductances. The interleaved converters were considered with the optimal switching parameters resulting from the analysis done on a detailed parasitic circuit model, ensuring minimum losses and maintaining the safe operating area. The analysis included the comparison of different inductors, and for the selected ones the complete system efficiency and cost were conducted. The results indicate the benefits when SiC-MOSFETs are applied to the interleaved dc−dc topology for wid... [more]

Performance of 3D Wave Field Modeling Using the Staggered Grid Finite Difference Method with General-Purpose Processors
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: numerical modeling, staggered grid finite-difference method, wave field.
This paper aims to provide a quantitative understanding of the performance of numerical modeling of a wave field equation using general-purpose processors. In particular, this article presents the most important aspects related to the memory workloads and execution time of the numerical modeling of both acoustic and fully elastic waves in isotropic and anisotropic mediums. The results presented in this article were calculated for the staggered grid finite difference method. Our results show that the more realistic the seismic wave simulations that are performed, the more the demand for memory and the computational capacity of the computing environment increases. The results presented in this article allow the estimation of the memory requirements and computational time of wavefield modeling for the considered model (acoustic, elastic or anisotropic) so that their feasibility can be assessed in a given computing environment and within an acceptable time. Multi-Rate Real-Time Simulation Method Based on the Norton Equivalent
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: extrapolation method, ideal source equivalent, increment, multi-rate real-time simulation, Norton equivalent.
For the problem of poor accuracy of the existing multi-rate simulation methods, this paper proposes a multi-rate real-time simulation method based on the Norton equivalent, compared with multi-rate simulation method based on the ideal source equivalent. After the Norton equivalence of the fast subsystem and the slow subsystem are established, they are solved simultaneously at the junction nodes. In order to reduce the amount of the simulation calculation, the Norton equivalent circuit is obtained by incremental calculation. The data interaction between the fast subsystem and the slow subsystem is realized by extrapolation method. For ensuring the real-time performance of the simulation, the method of the slow subsystem calculates ahead of the fast subsystem is given for the slow subsystem with a large amount of calculation. Finally, the AC/DC hybrid power system was simulated on the real-time simulation platform (FPGA-based Real-Time Digital Solver, FRTDS), and the simulation results w... [more]

Design Space Exploration of Turbulent Multiphase Flows Using Machine Learning-Based Surrogate Model
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: gaussian processes, large eddy simulation (LES), Machine Learning, turbulent multiphase flows.
This study focuses on establishing a surrogate model based on machine learning techniques to predict the time-averaged spatially distributed behaviors of vaporizing liquid jets in turbulent air crossflow for momentum flux ratios between 5 and 120. This surrogate model extends a previously developed Gaussian-process-based framework applicable to laminar flows to accommodate turbulent flows and demonstrates that in addition to detailed fields of primitive variables, second-order turbulence statistics can also be predicted using machine learning techniques. The framework proceeds in 3 steps—(1) design of experiment studies to identify training points and conducting high-fidelity calculations to build the training dataset; (2) Gaussian process regression (supervised training) for the range of operating conditions under consideration for gaseous and dispersed phase quantities; and (3) error quantification of the surrogate model by comparing the machine learning predictions with the truth mo... March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electrothermal (ET) simulation, finite-element method (FEM), model-order reduction (MOR), multicellular power MOSFET, silicon carbide (SiC).
This paper discusses the benefits of an advanced highly-efficient approach to static and dynamic electrothermal simulations of multicellular silicon carbide (SiC) power MOSFETs. The strategy is based on a fully circuital representation of the device, which is discretized into an assigned number of individual cells, high enough to analyze temperature and current nonuniformities over the active area. The cells are described with subcircuits implementing a simple transistor model that accounts for the utmost influence of the traps at the SiC/SiO2 interface. The power-temperature feedback is emulated with an equivalent network corresponding to a compact thermal model automatically generated by the FANTASTIC tool from an accurate 3D mesh of the component under test. The resulting macrocircuit can be solved by any SPICE-like simulation program with low computational burden and rare occurrence of convergence issues.

A New Cross-Correlation Algorithm Based on Distance for Improving Localization Accuracy of Partial Discharge in Cables Lines
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cross-correlation function, localization accuracy, partial discharge location, power cable.
Locating the partial discharge (PD) source is one of the most effective means to locate local defects in power cable lines. The sampling rate and the frequency-dependent characteristic of phase velocity have an obvious influence on localization accuracy based on the times of arrival (TOA) evaluation algorithm. In this paper, we present a cross-correlation algorithm based on propagation distance to locate the PD source in cable lines. First, we introduce the basic principle of the cross-correlation function of propagation distance. Then we verify the proposed method through a computer simulation model and investigate the influences of propagation distance, sampling rate, and noise on localization accuracy. Finally, we perform PD location experiments on two 250 m 10 kV XLPE power cables using the oscillation wave test system. The simulation and experiment results indicate that compared with traditional TOA evaluation methods, the proposed method has superior locating precision.

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: demand side bidding, Energy, Energy Efficiency, Gaussian mixture model, MCMC.
Over the years, electricity consumption behavior in Brazil has been analyzed due to financial and social problems. In this context, it is important to simulate energy prices of the energy efficiency auctions in the Brazilian electricity market. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method generated simulations; thus, several samples were generated with different sizes. It is possible to say that the larger the sample, the better the approximation to the original data. Then, the Kernel method and the Gaussian mixture model used to estimate the density distribution of energy price, and the MCMC method were crucial in providing approximations of the original data and clearly analyzing its impact. Next, the behavior of the data in each histogram was observed with 500, 1000, 5000 and 10,000 samples, considering only one scenario. The sample which best approximates the original data in accordance with the generated histograms is the 10,000th sample, which consistently follows the behavior of t... [more]

Simulation Study of the Formation of Corrosive Gases in Coal Combustion in an Entrained Flow Reactor
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), high temperature corrosion, pulverized fuel-firing systems.
Gaseous sulfur species play a major role in high temperature corrosion of pulverized coal fired furnaces. The prediction of sulfur species concentrations by 3D-Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation allows the identification of furnace wall regions that are exposed to corrosive gases, so that countermeasures against corrosion can be applied. In the present work, a model for the release of sulfur and chlorine species during coal combustion is presented. The model is based on the mineral matter transformation of sulfur and chlorine bearing minerals under coal combustion conditions. The model is appended to a detailed reaction mechanism for gaseous sulfur and chlorine species and hydrocarbon related reactions, as well as a global three-step mechanism for coal devolatilization, char combustion, and char gasification. Experiments in an entrained flow were carried out to validate the developed model. Three-dimensional numerical simulations of an entrained flow reactor were performed b... [more]

Intraday Electricity Pricing of Night Contracts
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 15-min. contracts, econometric modeling, fundamentals, intraday electricity market, night contracts, renewable power forecasts.
This paper investigates the intraday electricity pricing of 15-min. contracts in night hours. We tailor a recently introduced econometric model with fundamental impacts, which is successful in describing the pricing of day contracts. Our estimation results show that the mean reversion and the positive price impact of neighboring contracts are generic features of the price formation process on the intraday market, independent of the time of day. Intraday auction prices have higher explanatory power for the pricing of night than day contracts, particularly, for the first and last 15-min. contract in a night hour. Intradaily updated forecasts of wind power infeed are the only significant fundamental factors for intraday electricity prices at night. Neither expected conventional capacities nor the slope of the merit order curve contribute to explaining price dynamics. Overall, we conclude that fundamentals lose in importance in night hours and the 15-min. intraday market is rather driven b... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ground source heat pump system, influence of ground surface, simulation tool, superposition theorem.
The authors developed a ground heat exchanger (GHE) calculation model influenced by the ground surface by applying the superposition theorem. Furthermore, a simulation tool for ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems affected by ground surface was developed by combining the GHE calculation model with the simulation tool for GSHP systems that the authors previously developed. March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: arch dam, concept drift, concrete temperature field, construction simulation, grasshopper optimization algorithm, interval prediction, relevance vector machine.
Joint grouting simulation is an important aspect of arch dam construction simulation. However, the current construction simulation model simplifies the temperature factors in joint grouting simulation, which leads to the difference between the simulation results and the actual construction schedule. Furthermore, the majority of existing temperature prediction research is based on deterministic point predictions, which cannot quantify the uncertainties of the prediction values. Thus, this study presents a real-time construction simulation method coupling a concrete temperature field interval prediction model to address these problems. First, a real-time construction simulation model is established. Secondly, this paper proposes a concrete temperature interval prediction method based on the hybrid-kernel relevance vector machine (HK-RVM) with the improved grasshopper optimization algorithm (IGOA). March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: classification of load curves, clustering validity, dimensionality reduction, inter-class distance, singular value decomposition, weighted Euclidean distance.
Clustering electric load curves is an important part of the load data mining process. In this paper, we propose a clustering algorithm by combining singular value decomposition and KICIC clustering algorithm (SVD-KICIC) for analyzing the characteristics of daily load curves to mitigate some of the traditional clustering algorithm problems, such as only considering intra-class distance and low computational efficiency when dealing with massive load data. Our method identifies effective daily load curve characteristics using the singular value decomposition technique to improve dimensionality reduction, which improves low computational efficiency by reducing the number of dimensions inherent in big data. Additionally, the method performs SVD on the load data to obtain singular values for determination of weight of the KICIC algorithm, which leverages intra-class and inter-class distances of the load data and further improves the computational efficiency of the algorithm. March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: power supply systems, short-circuit current, synchronous generator.
This paper presents an analysis of the short-circuit currents of a synchronous generator with a rated power of 16 kVA. For this purpose, the authors carried out measurements of real short-circuit currents during laboratory tests. Additionally, a simulation model of the generator was developed according to the individual machines data from the catalog and field calculations in ANSYS Maxwell software. Based on the mentioned research, the authors compared waveforms of the symmetrical short-circuit currents. In this paper, the last compared family of short-circuit current waveforms was obtained using analytic calculations. As the presented comparison shows, the assumed method of selecting short-circuit waveforms impacted their values. However, the difference in energy related to short-circuit currents did not influence on the selection of the short-circuit protections, especially at low values of steady-state short-circuit currents and short time constants characteristic for the generators... A Novel BIPV Reconfiguration Algorithm for Maximum Power Generation under Partial Shading
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building-information modelling, building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), complex geometric rooftop, genetic algorithm optimisation, partial shading.
The feasibility of electricity production via solar energy in the Middle East is high due to the enormous value of solar radiation. Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) are systems used to utilise the unused spaces that can be installed on the façade or roof by replacing the building’s main element. However, the main problem associated with electricity production by BIPV is partial shading on the roof, which can produce multiple hot spots and disturbances to the system if the insolation values within the whole BIPV array vary. Partial shading, in this case, is observed due to the complexly shaped roof. This paper studies the partial shading effect on one of Qatar’s most recent projects (metro stations), and models the Education City station, which is a major station. The rooftop is complex, and it has many wavy shapes that can affect the BIPV system’s performance. The station is modelled using building-information modelling (BIM) software, wherein all of the station’s models are ga... [more]

Optimal Selection of Time-Current Characteristic of Overcurrent Protection for Induction Motors in Drives of Mining Machines with Prolonged Starting Time
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electric safety, fan, induction motor, overcurrent protection.
The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of mine power network impedance on the starting time of induction motors, as well as on the operation of overcurrent protection relay. Proper selection of the time-current characteristic of overcurrent protection is crucial for the operation of the drive. A specific feature of mining power grids is their high impedance, which results from long cable lines with relatively small cross-sections. This causes relatively large voltage drops and significantly reduces the starting torque of the motor. Reduced starting torque increases the starting time and intensifies the motor overheating. This study analyzes a series of standardized time-current characteristics used in Invertim company protection devices. A simulation study of startup current and starting time was conducted for an exemplary medium-power motor with a large inertia fan at different values of power supply voltage below the rated value. March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: modular multilevel converter (MMC), nearest level modulation (NLM), switching state, total harmonic distortion (THD), universal mathematical model (UMM).
Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) play an important role in the power electronics industry due to their many advantages, such as modularity and reliability. In the current research, the simulation method is used to study the system. However, with the increasing number of sub-modules (SMs), it is difficult to model and simulate the system. In order to overcome these difficulties, this paper presents a universal mathematical model (UMM) of MMC using half-bridge cells as SMs. The UMM is a full-scale model with switching state, capacitance, inductance, and resistance characteristics. This method can calculate any number of SMs, and it does not need to build a simulation model (SIM) of physical MMC—in particular, parametric design can be realized. Compared with the SIM, the accuracy of the proposed UMM is verified, and the computational efficiency of the UMM is 8.7 times higher than the simulation method. Finally, by utilizing the proposed UMM method, the influence of the parameters of M... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building ventilation efficiency, Computational Fluid Dynamics, indoor thermal comfort, windcatcher louver.
Windcatcher louvers are designed to capture air flowing outside a building in order to increase its natural ventilation. There are no studies that have designed the shape of the louver to increase the natural ventilation efficiency of the building. This study aimed to conduct a computational fluid dynamics simulation and mock-up test of a Clark Y airfoil-type windcatcher louver designed to increase the natural ventilation in a building. The optimal angle of attack of the airfoil was calculated via a numerical analysis, which demonstrated that the wind speed was at its highest when the angle of attack was 8°; further, flow separation occurred at angles exceeding 8°, at which point the wind speed began to decrease. The results of the mock-up test demonstrated that the time required to reduce the concentration of fine particles in the indoor air was 120 s shorter when the windcatcher was installed than when it was not, which indicating that the ti... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: binary particles, bubbling fluidized bed, CFD-DEM, mixing characteristic.
The behavior of solid mixing dynamic is of profound significance to the heat transfer and reaction efficiencies in energy engineering. In the current study, the solid mixing characteristics of binary particles in the bubbling fluidized bed are further revealed at particle-scale. Specifically, the influences of gas superficial velocity, Sauter mean diameter (SMD) in the system and the range distribution of particle sizes on the performance of mixing index are quantitatively explored using a computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM) coupling model. The competition between solid segregation and the mixing of binary particles is deeply analyzed. There is a critical superficial velocity that maximizes the mixing index of the binary mixture in the bubbling fluidized bed. Solid mixing performs more aggressive when below the critical velocity, otherwise solid segregation overtakes mixing when above this critical velocity. Thermal Distortion of Signal Propagation Modes Due to Dynamic Loading in Medium-Voltage Cables
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: complex dielectric permittivity, dynamic cable rating, multi-conductor transmission lines, power cable insulation, signal propagation modes.
Temperature variation from dynamic cable loading affects the propagation characteristics of transient signals. The distortion of modal signal components as a function of temperature in a three-phase medium-voltage cable is investigated. The temperature influence arises mainly through the complex insulation permittivity, which has a non-linear relationship with temperature. Near the maximum operating temperature of the cross-linked polyethylene insulation, the propagation velocity increases by 0.56% per degree centigrade but is an order of magnitude less sensitive at ambient temperature. The paper presents modeling results based on cable impedance and admittance matrices obtained from electromagnetic field simulation, taking into account the time-varying temperature distribution in the cable cross-section. The results are verified by applying Rayleigh−Schrödinger perturbation analysis. In the time domain, signal patterns shift when the modal propagation velocities change upon cable load... [more]

A Modified Reynolds-Averaged Navier−Stokes-Based Wind Turbine Wake Model Considering Correction Modules
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 3D aerodynamic model, correction modules, Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes method, turbulence model, wind turbine wake model.
Increasing wind power generation has been introduced into power systems to meet the renewable energy targets in power generation. The output efficiency and output power stability are of great importance for wind turbines to be integrated into power systems. The wake effect influences the power generation efficiency and stability of wind turbines. However, few studies consider comprehensive corrections in an aerodynamic model and a turbulence model, which challenges the calculation accuracy of the velocity field and turbulence field in the wind turbine wake model, thus affecting wind power integration into power systems. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposes a modified Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (MRANS)-based wind turbine wake model to simulate the wake effects. Comparative Study of Integer and Non-Integer Order Models of Synchronous Generator
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: fractional calculus, Grünwald–Letnikov definition, non-integer order modelling, synchronous generator.
This article presents a comparison between integer and non-integer order modelling of a synchronous generator, in the frequency domain as well as in the time domain. The classical integer order model was compared to one containing half-order systems. The half-order systems are represented in a Park d-q axis equivalent circuit as impedances modelled by half-order transmittances. Using a direct method based on the approximation of the half-order derivatives by the Grünwald−Letnikov definition, a state-space equation system was solved. For both models, a computational program written in Matlab® software was used. For the purpose of time domain simulation, the machine models were connected to an electric load composed of an RL circuit. To validate and compare both models, simulation results of a three-phase short-circuit and a no-load voltage recovery were compared with corresponding measurements performed on a solid salient-pole synchronous generator of 125 kVA.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: annular jet pump, critical flow ratio, incipient cavitation number, numerical simulation, streamlined profile.
To improve the working performance of the early annular jet pump (EAJP), a streamlined annular jet pump (SAJP) was proposed. The flow field and working performance of the EAJP and SAJP with an area ratio (m) of 1.75 were numerically studied and compared, separately, by using the combination of the Realizable k-ε turbulence model and the Schnerr−Sauer cavitation model. The results show that the efficiency of the SAJP is higher than that of the EAJP, when the flow ratio (q) is higher than 0.30, with a maximum increase of 1.2%. Furthermore, the high-efficiency area of the SAJP (q = 0.40~0.69) is wider than that of the EAJP (q = 0.36~0.57). There is no flow separation and low local pressure in the SAJP, due to the conjunction part of the suction chamber, throat, diffuser and outlet pipe without the structural mutation. It was found that the incipient cavitation number (σi) of the SAJP and EAJP was 0.541 and 0.578, respectively; therefore, the cavitation performance of the SAJP is better. M... [more]
