April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Machine Learning, multilayer current velocity, tidal current prediction, turbulence flow, UTide
Accurate tidal current prediction plays a critical role with increasing utilization of tidal energy. The classical prediction approach of the tidal current velocity adopts the harmonic analysis (HA) method. The performance of the HA approach is not ideal to predict the high frequency components of tidal currents due to the lack of capability processing the non-astronomic factor. Recently, machine learning algorithms have been applied to process the non-astronomic factor in the prediction of tidal current. In this paper, a tidal current velocity prediction considering the effect of the multi-layer current velocity method is proposed. The proposed method adopts three machine learning algorithms to establish the prediction models for comparative investigations, namely long-short term memory (LSTM), back-propagation (BP) neural network, and the Elman regression network. In the case study, the tidal current data collected from the real ocean environment were used to validate the proposed me... [more]
Analytical Model for Predicting Productivity of Radial-Lateral Wells

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytical modeling, radial jet drilling, radial lateral wells, unconventional reservoirs, well completion
An analytical model for predicting the productivity of Radial-lateral wells (RLW) drilled using radial jet drilling technology was developed in this work. The model assumes uniformly distributed equal-geometry laterals draining oil or gas under pseudo-steady state flow conditions within the lateral-reached drainage area. A numerical simulation and production data from three field cases of RLW were used to compare and validate the model. The result indicates that the model overestimates the well production rates for wells by 7.7%, 3.25%, and 8.8%, respectively. The error is attributed to several sources including, lack of data for well skin factor, uncertainty of horizontal permeability (kH) in the well area, uncertainty of permeability anisotropy (Iani), and uncertainty in bottom hole pressure (pw). Error analysis of uncertainties in kH, Iani, and pw showed that the model could predict productivity well with an acceptable error (10%) over practical ranges of these parameter values. Par... [more]

Keywords: district heating, dynamics, Machine Learning, Modelling, Optimization, pipes, smart systems
Modern control strategies for district-level heating and cooling supply systems pose a difficult challenge. In order to integrate a wide range of hot and cold sources, these new systems will rely heavily on accumulation and much lower operating temperatures. This means that predictive models advising the control strategy must take into account long-lasting thermal effects but must not be computationally too expensive, because the control would not be possible in practice. This paper presents a simple but powerful systematic approach to reducing the complexity of individual components of such models. It makes it possible to combine human engineering intuition with machine learning and arrive at comprehensive and accurate models. As an example, a simple steady-state heat loss of buried pipes is extended with dynamics observed in a much more complex model. The results show that the process converges quickly toward reasonable solutions. The new auto-generated model performs 5 × 104 times f... [more]
Electrical Modelling of Switching Arcs in a Low Voltage Relay at Low Currents

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: arc characteristics, arc image, arc length, DC arc model, switching arc
The arc behaviour of short, low current switching arcs is not well understood and lacks a reliable model. In this work, the behaviour of an arc in the air is studied during contact separation at low DC currents (0.5 A to 20 A) and for small gap lengths (0 mm to 6 mm). The experiments are performed on a low voltage relay with two different electrode configurations. The arc voltage is measured during the opening of the contacts at constant current. The arc length is determined optically by tracing the mean path of the arc over time from a series of high-speed images. From the synchronised data of voltage vs. distance, first a sudden jump of the voltage at the start of contact opening is observed. Secondly, a sudden change in the voltage gradient occurs as the arc is elongated. Short arcs with a length up to approximately 1.25 mm show an intense radiation in the overall gap region and high voltage gradients. An unexpected behaviour never reported before was observed for longer arcs at low... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive time step, external loose coupling, multi-physics, picard iteration, rod ejection accident
A new reactor core multi-physics system addresses the pellet-to-cladding heat transfer modeling to improve full-core operational transient and accident simulation used for assessment of reactor core nuclear safety. The rigorous modeling of the heat transfer phenomena involves strong interaction between neutron kinetics, thermal-hydraulics and nuclear fuel performance, as well as consideration of the pellet-to-cladding mechanical contact leading to dramatic increase in the gap thermal conductance coefficient. In contrast to core depletion where parameters smoothly depend on fuel burn-up, the core transient is driven by stiff equation associated with rapid variation in the solution and vulnerable to numerical instability for large time step sizes. Therefore, the coupling algorithm dedicated for multi-physics transient must implement adaptive time step and restart capability to achieve prescribed tolerance and to maintain stability of numerical simulation. This requirement is met in the M... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building roofs, building simulation, gymnasium buildings, solar radiation assessment
Gymnasium are typically large-span buildings with abundant solar energy resources due to their extensive roof surface. However, relevant research on this topic has not been thoroughly conducted to investigate the effect of the geometric shape of gymnasium buildings on their solar potential. In this paper, an investigation of the geometric shape effect on the solar potential of gymnasium buildings is presented. A three-dimensional radiation transfer model coupled with historical meteorological data was established to estimate the real-time solar potential of the roof of a gymnasium building. The rooftop solar potential of three typical building foundation shapes and different types of roof shapes that have evolved was systematically analyzed. An annual solar potential cloud map of each gymnasium building is generated. The monthly and annual average solar radiation intensities of the different types of roof shapes are investigated. Compared to the optimal tilt angle, the maximum decrease... [more]

Keywords: electromagnetic force, harmonic analysis, planar machine, real-time simulation
The existing simulation method for the control of linear or planar magnetically levitated actuators always ignores the characteristics of the real physical object, which deteriorates the accuracy of the simulation. In this work, the proposed emulator for the magnetically levitated actuator is developed to consider both the force characteristics and the control algorithm. To model the real controlled object, the mathematical model for 1D (one-dimensional) and 2D (two-dimensional) magnetic arrays is derived where the yaw angle is taken into consideration using the coordinate transformation. The solution of the mathematical model is compared with the commercial BEM (boundary element method) software and the measurements from a force and torque testing setup to highlight the accuracy of the proposed mathematical model. Compared with the traditional simulation method of the motion control systems founded on the simplified system transfer function, the proposed simulation method has higher c... [more]
Fluid Mixing Nonequilibrium Processes in Industrial Piping Flows

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: calorific value, entropy, gas transmission systems, mathematical models, maximum likelihood method, multi-component flows, non-equilibrium processes
The flow of a multicomponent fluid through a pipeline system of arbitrary configuration is considered. The problem consists in determining the component composition of the fluid for each pipeline of the system based on the values of the concentration of the components throughout the entire set of measuring points, provided that there are no phase transitions. To solve the problem, mathematical models have been developed that, in principle, are suitable for pipeline systems of various functional purposes, the presentation is concretized and carried out in relation to gas transmission systems. The models are stochastic in nature due to measurement errors, which are considered random variables. The solution of the problem is reduced to the optimization of a quadratic function with constraints in the form of equalities and inequalities. The considered mixing processes do not depend on the regime parameters of the fluid flow. The processes are irreversible and non-equilibrium. A criterion i... [more]

Keywords: economic analysis, heat generation, LCA, moving bed biomass boiler, numerical modeling
This paper analyzes a moving grate biomass boiler operating with three alternative waste fuels, including biomass pellets, wood waste, and refuse-derived fuel (RDF) from a combination of thermal, economic, and environmental perspectives. The focus of this paper is on system functionality adaptation to retrofit the current systems operational conditions. A one-dimensional numerical bed model integrated with a black-box overbed model was developed to carefully investigate the fuel bed’s thermal characteristics, as well as the boiler’s output. According to the results, the system operates more efficiently under the biomass pellets feeding and annually generates 548 GJ heat, while it drops significantly in other scenarios. The system was economically evaluated based on a 25-year life cycle cost analysis. Subsequently, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 36% was calculated for biomass pellets, while the value reduced by 50% and 27% regarding wood waste and RDF, respectively. The fuel cost w... [more]

Keywords: compact heat exchangers, Computational Fluid Dynamics, dividing manifold, flow uniformity, parallel flow, pressure drop
Parallel flow heat exchangers with manifolds are widely used in various industries owing to their compact size and ease of application. Research has been conducted to understand their flow characteristics and improve flow distribution and pressure drop performance; however, it is difficult to derive generalized improvements under different conditions for each application. This study proposes a novel design to improve the flow characteristics of a compact heat exchanger with a sudden expansion area of a dividing manifold and uses computational fluid dynamics simulation to verify it. The abrupt cross-sectional area change in the dividing manifold induces a jet flow near the entry region, which causes the flow maldistribution of the first few parallel tubes. To improve the efficiency of the dividing manifold, simple and novel designs with a converging-diverging area in the manifold header have been proposed. Parametric studies on the novel designs show improvements of up to 37.5% and 52.0... [more]

Keywords: apparent gas permeability, irreducible water distribution, pore size distribution, porous deformation, shale matrix
Apparent gas permeability (AGP) is a significantly important parameter for productivity prediction and reservoir simulation. However, the influence of multiscale effect and irreducible water distribution on gas transport is neglected in most of the existing AGP models, which will overestimate gas transport capacity. Therefore, an AGP model coupling multiple mechanisms is established to investigate gas transport in multiscale shale matrix. First, AGP models of organic matrix (ORM) and inorganic matrix (IOM) have been developed respectively, and the AGP model for shale matrix is derived by coupling AGP models for two types of matrix. Multiple effects such as real gas effect, multiscale effect, porous deformation, irreducible water saturation and gas ab-/de-sorption are considered in the proposed model. Second, sensitive analysis indicates that pore size, pressure, porous deformation and irreducible water have significant impact on AGP. Finally, effective pore size distribution (PSD) and... [more]

Keywords: building thermal performance, reduced order model, solar heat gains
The aim of this study was to elaborate and validate a reduced order model able to forecast solar heat gains as a function of the architectural parameters that determine the solar heat gains. The study focused on office buildings in Catalonia and Spain and their physical values were taken from the Spanish Building Technical Code and European Union Directive 2018/844. A reduced order model with three direct variables (solar heat gain coefficient, shade factor, window to wall ratio) and one indirect design variable (building orientation) was obtained and validated in respect to the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol. Building envelope properties were fixed and the values were taken from the national standards of Spain. This work validates solar heat gain coefficient as a primary variable in determining the annual solar heat gains in a building. Further work of developed model could result in building energy need quick evaluation tool in terms of solar heat gai... [more]

Keywords: cutting effect, finite element model, induction motor, super premium
This paper investigates the mechanical cutting effect on the performance of induction motors. Numerical modeling of cutting effect is described in this paper. The approach inverts the degradation of the permeability model for inclusion of it into magnetic vector potential formula by Newton method. The effect of cutting on iron losses is implemented in finite element simulation. The simulation results are compared with experimental results of prototype IE4 efficiency induction motors rated at 2.2 kW. One of them was manufactured with annealed electrical steel lamination to highlight the cutting effect on the performance of the motor. The notable effect of cutting was measured in increased stator current; however, negligible differences were found in measured iron losses. The presented model in this paper follows the measurements.

We examined the cost implications of selecting six different types of heat exchangers as the lean/rich heat exchanger in an amine-based CO2 capture process. The difference in total capital cost between different capture plant scenarios due to the different costs of the heat exchangers used as the lean/rich heat exchanger, in each case, is in millions of Euros. The gasketed-plate heat exchanger (G-PHE) saves significant space, and it saves considerable costs. Selecting the G-PHE instead of the shell and tube heat exchangers (STHXs) will save €33 million−€39 million in total capital cost (CAPEX), depending on the type of STHX. About €43 million and €2 million in total installed costs (CAPEX) can be saved if the G-PHE is selected instead of the finned double-pipe heat exchanger (FDP-HX) or welded-plate heat exchanger, respectively. The savings in total annual cost is also in millions of Euros/year. Capture costs of €5/tCO2−€6/tCO2 can be saved by replacing conventional STHXs with the G-PH... [more]

Keywords: automatic surveillance, Machine Learning, oil and gas reservoir development and management
Predictive analysis of the reservoir surveillance data is crucial for the high-efficiency management of oil and gas reservoirs. Here we introduce a new approach to reservoir surveillance that uses the machine learning tree boosting method to forecast production data. In this method, the prediction target is the decline rate of oil production at a given time for one well in the low-permeability carbonate reservoir. The input data to train the model includes reservoir production data (e.g., oil rate, water cut, gas oil ratio (GOR)) and reservoir operation data (e.g., history of choke size and shut-down activity) of 91 producers in this reservoir for the last 20 years. The tree boosting algorithm aims to quantitatively uncover the complicated hidden patterns between the target prediction parameter and other monitored data of a high variety, through state-of-the-art automatic classification and multiple linear regression algorithms. We also introduce a segmentation technique that divides t... [more]

Keywords: capacity, coefficient of performance, design considerations, energy systems, magnetocaloric effect, mathematical modelling, refrigeration
A magnetic refrigeration system has the potential to alternate the compression system with respect to environmental compatibility. Refrigeration systems currently operate on the basis of the expansion and compression processes, while active magnetic refrigeration systems operate based on the magnetocaloric effect. In this study, a single layer of Gd was used as the magnetocaloric material for six-packed-sphere regenerators. A one-dimensional numerical model was utilized to simulate the magnetic refrigeration system and determine the optimum parameters. The optimum mass flow rate and maximum cooling capacity at frequency of 4 Hz are 3 L·min−1 and 580 W, respectively. The results show that the maximum pressure drop increased by 1400 W at a frequency of 4 Hz and mass flow rate of 5 L·min−1. In this study, we consider the refrigeration system in terms of the design considerations, conduct a parametric study, and determine the effect of various parameters on the performance of the system.

Keywords: heating, natural circulation loop, solar building integration, solar heat efficiency, wall
This paper presented a building façade combined with photothermal technology where a water circulation system, including a thermal radiation plate and a solar collector, was installed. When heated by solar radiation, the water in the system transfered part of the solar heat to the room through natural circulation by buoyancy caused by density difference. During the cold season, the solar heat efficiency of the façade under natural circulation was studied through experiments and numerical simulations. The results show that the simulated values of the model established by MATLAB were in good agreement with the experimental values. Under the action of natural circulation, good solar energy utilization efficiency could be obtained by the façade. When solar irradiance was 1100 W/m2, the heat gain of the solar collector was 1672 W, of which the heat delivered to the recycled water and supplied to indoor was 1184 W, and the solar heat efficiency could reach 71%. Both the pipeline impedance an... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: criterion, dam-break wave, gate-opening time, LES, non-rectangular channel, wet-bed
A sudden dam failure is usually simulated by the rapid removal of a gate in laboratory tests and numerical simulations. The gate-opening time is often determined according to the Lauber and Hager instantaneous collapse criterion (referred to as the Lauber−Hager criterion), which is established for a rectangular open channel with a dry bed. However, this criterion is not suitable for non-rectangular channels or initial wet-bed conditions. In this study, the effect of the gate-opening time on the wave evolution is investigated by using the large eddy simulation (LES) model. The instantaneous dam-break, namely, a dam-break without a gate, is simulated for comparison. A gate-opening criterion for generating dam-break flow in a non-rectangular wet-bed channel is proposed in this study, which can be used as an extension of the Lauber−Hager criterion and provides a more comprehensive and reasonable estimate of the gate opening time.

Keywords: HIRVAC2D, low-level jet, micro-scale model simulation, wind lidar
For the increasing importance of the wind energy branch, exact wind climatologies at the operation altitudes are essential. As wind turbines of increasing hub height are erected, the rotors are located at an altitude interval influenced by the phenomenon of low-level jet (LLJ). The main objective of the study is to assess if and how numerical simulations can represent the development especially of nocturnal LLJs in comparison to measurements. In this article, the microscale numerical model HIRVAC2D is used for a range of parameters. The simulated results for properties of the LLJ are compared to lidar data at an altitude range of 40 m to 500 m at the study site Braunschweig in the North German Plain, a grassland location that may be representative for a large area. Similarities and differences of the occurrence, height and maximum wind speed of the nocturnal LLJ are discussed using two different criteria to define a LLJ. Keywords: chemical kinetics, flame extinction, flame stretch, flammability, heat loss, hydrogen energy, hydrogen safety, Lewis number
Many countries consider hydrogen as a promising energy source to resolve the energy challenges over the global climate change. However, the potential of hydrogen explosions remains a technical issue to embrace hydrogen as an alternate solution since the Hindenburg disaster occurred in 1937. To ascertain safe hydrogen energy systems including production, storage, and transportation, securing the knowledge concerning hydrogen flammability is essential. In this paper, we addressed a comprehensive review of the studies related to predicting hydrogen flammability by dividing them into three types: experimental, numerical, and analytical. While the earlier experimental studies had focused only on measuring limit concentration, recent studies clarified the extinction mechanism of a hydrogen flame. In numerical studies, the continued advances in computer performance enabled even multi-dimensional stretched flame analysis following one-dimensional planar flame analysis. The different extinction... [more]

Keywords: EMF modeling, gas-insulated substations, transient ground potential rise, VFTO
Assessment of very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) requires good knowledge of the behavior of gas-insulated substation when subjected to very high frequencies. The international standards and guidelines generically present only recommendations regarding the VFTO suppression without a technical and mathematical background. Therefore, to provide an accurate image regarding the critical locations across a gas-insulated substation (GIS) from a transient response point of view, a suitable modeling technique has to be identified and developed for the substation. The paper aimed to provide an accurate assessment of the GIS holistic transient response through an electromagnetic field theory (EMF) approach. This modeling technique has always been a difficult task when it came to gas-insulated substations. However, recent studies have shown that through suitable Computer-aided design models, representing the GIS metallic ensemble, accurate results can be obtained. The paper investigated severa... The crossarm is an important component of transmission towers, providing insulation for transmission lines at different voltage ratings. Recently, composite crossarms were widely used as a composite tower component and were found to be the most favorable choice for replacing old wooden crossarms. Owing to the satisfactory pilot operation and multiple sets of testing, fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite crossarms have been used in Malaysia in both 132 and 275 kV transmission lines since the late 1990′s. Since then, some modifications have been proposed to improve the mechanical performance of the crossarm, in order to ensure the reliability of its performance. In this investigation, the effect of a proposed improvement, achieved by installing a brace for the crossarm, was investigated numerically. A simulation study was conducted, with a consideration of the lightning impulse voltage (LIV) and swing angle exhibited by the crossarm. The potential and electric field (E-Field) di... [more]

Keywords: CFD simulation, kitchen house, rural house, wind flow
Most Malaysian rural houses are categorized as non-engineered buildings and vulnerable to damage during events such as windstorms due to the fact that these houses lack engineering considerations. These houses are characterized by having an attached kitchen house, and many of these houses were previously damaged by thunderstorms. The current research investigated the air flow characteristics changes surrounding these houses as a result of the presence of the kitchen. The roof pitch, position, gap height, and overhang were investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results showed that the kitchen position at the center resulted in a slight increase in the suction on the ridge of the roof; however, it significantly altered the flow pattern in the windward and leeward directions. The results also showed that the roof overhang, roof pitch, and kitchen position contributed severely to the damage of the rural house. Moreover, the highest suction occurred at the ro... [more]

Keywords: Biomass, combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, mathematical modeling, numerical simulation, thermochemical decomposition
The numerical simulation of biomass combustion requires a model that must contain, on one hand, sub-models for biomass conversion to primary products, which involves calculations for heat transfer, biomass decomposition rate, product fractions, chemical composition, and material properties, and on the other hand, sub-models for volatile products transport inside and outside of the biomass particle, their combustion, and the char reduction/oxidation. Creating such a complete mathematical model is particularly challenging; therefore, the present study proposes a versatile alternative—an originally formulated generalized 3D biomass decomposition model designed to be efficiently integrated with existing CFD technology. The biomass decomposition model provides the chemical composition and mixture fractions of volatile products and char at the cell level, while the heat transfer, species transport, and chemical reaction calculations are to be handled by the CFD software.
