Performance Assessment of Some Practical Loss of Excitation Detection Schemes Employing a Realistic Model
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: loss of excitation detection relay, protection, real-time-digital-simulator, synchronous generator modeling.
Loss of excitation (LOE) relay is one of the most essential protection elements for synchronous generators in power plants. During the last few decades, several LOE detection methods have been proposed, while limited schemes such as admittance- and impedance-based ones have been adopted for industrial applications. This study investigates and compares the behavior of some practical LOE detection schemes through extensive simulation scenarios, and from the reliability, speed, and security points of view. The simulation scenarios are accomplished by using the real-time-digital-simulator, where the phase domain model of the synchronous generator is used to develop a realistic and typical power generation system. Employing such a system, different types of complete and partial LOE incidents can be applied according to IEEE Standard C37.102-2006, while the performance of any scheme can be assessed through accurate and realistic LOE scenarios.

One-Dimensional Heterogeneous Reaction Model of a Drop-Tube Carbonator Reactor for Thermochemical Energy Storage Applications
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 1D modeling, calcium-looping (CaL), carbonator reactor model, concentrated solar power (CSP), random pore model.
Calcium looping systems constitute a promising candidate for thermochemical energy storage (TCES) applications, as evidenced by the constantly escalating scientific and industrial interest. However, the technologically feasible transition from the research scale towards industrial and highly competitive markets sets as a prerequisite the optimal design and operation of the process, especially corresponding reactors. The present study investigates for the first time the development of a detailed, one-dimensional mathematical model for the steady-state simulation of a novel drop-tube carbonator reactor as a core equipment unit in a concentrated solar power (CSP)-thermochemical energy storage integration plant. A validated kinetic mathematical model for a carbonation reaction (CaO(s) + CO2(g) → CaCO3(s)) focused on thermochemical energy storage conditions was developed and implemented for different material conditions. The fast gas−solid reaction kinetics conformed with the drop-tube reac... [more]

New Protection Scheme in Loop Distribution System with Distributed Generation
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: closed-loop distribution system, distributed generation, equivalent circuit, fault section, protection scheme.
Loop distribution systems are increasingly used for reasons such as increased distributed generation (DG) and increased demand for a reliable and high-quality power supply. Because the loop distribution system involves bidirectional power flow, the method for protection of the radial distribution system cannot be applied. Therefore, a protection method is proposed herein for loop distribution systems. In this study, the existence of DG is also considered. According to the proposed method, the fault point is estimated on the basis of the equivalent circuit of the distribution system. Then, the fault section is determined and separated from the distribution system. The separation of DG is determined depending on whether the frequency and voltage are maintained within the steady state ranges. The proposed method is modelled and verified using the Electromagnetic Transients Program. Simulations according to the fault location are performed and analyzed. The results show that the method acc... [more]

Energy and Economic Analysis of Date Palm Biomass Feedstock for Biofuel Production in UAE: Pyrolysis, Gasification and Fermentation
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Aspen Plus, Biofuels, Biomass, energy integration, Fermentation, gasification, process simulation, pyrolysis.
This work evaluates date palm waste as a cheap and available biomass feedstock in UAE for the production of biofuels. The thermochemical and biochemical routes including pyrolysis, gasification, and fermentation were investigated. Simulations were done to produce biofuels from biomass via Aspen Plus v.10. The simulation results showed that for a tonne of biomass feed, gasification produced 56 kg of hydrogen and fermentation yielded 233 kg of ethanol. Process energy requirements, however, proved to offset the bioethanol product value. For 1 tonne of biomass feed, the net duty for pyrolysis was 37 kJ, for gasification was 725 kJ, and for fermentation was 7481.5 kJ. Furthermore, for 1 tonne of date palm waste feed, pyrolysis generated a returned USD $768, gasification generated USD 166, but fermentation required an expenditure of USD 763, rendering it unfeasible. The fermentation economic analysis showed that reducing the system’s net duty to 6500 kJ/tonne biomass and converting 30% hemic... [more]

On the Turbulence-Chemistry Interaction of an HCCI Combustion Engine
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: computational fluid-dynamics (CFD), eddy dissipation concept (EDC), homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI), turbulent combustion.
A numerical study was carried out to evaluate the influence of engine combustion chamber geometry and operating conditions on the performance and emissions of a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine. Combustion in an HCCI engine is a very complex phenomenon that is influenced by several factors that need to be controlled, such as gas temperature, heat transfer, turbulence and auto-ignition of the gas mixture. An eddy dissipation concept (EDC) combustion model was used to take into account the interaction between turbulence and chemistry. The model assumed that reactions occur in small turbulent structures called fine-scales, whose characteristic lengths and times depend mainly on the turbulence level. The model parameters were slightly modified with respect to the standard model proposed by Magnussen, to correctly simulate the characteristics of the HCCI combustion process. A reduced iso-octane chemical mechanism with 186 species and 914 chemical reactions was employed... [more]

Fluid Choice Based on Thermal Model and Performance Testing for Direct Cooled Electric Drive
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cooling fluid, direct cooling, durability, electric machine, thermal model.
In this publication, the cooling fluid for direct oil-cooled electric traction drive is investigated. A dedicated thermal resistance model was developed in order to show the influence of the fluid properties on the continuous performance. For this purpose, the heat transfer parameters are adjusted in the simulation using an exponential approach in order to evaluate the cooling fluid. In a sensitivity study, density, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and viscosity are investigated. Because viscosity, within the range investigated, shows the largest percentage deviation from the reference fluid, the greatest effect on performance can be seen here. In order to check the plausibility of the calculated results of the thermal simulation, two fluids were chosen for performance testing on a dedicated electro motor cooling (EMC) test. Beyond the investigation of heat transfer, aging of the defined fluid at maximum heat input over several hours is also evaluated. Only slight changes of the fl... [more]

CFD Analysis on the Balancing Hole Design for Magnetic Drive Centrifugal Pumps
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: axial thrust, balancing hole, centrifugal pump, impeller, magnetic drive pump.
Balancing holes in single-suction centrifugal pumps are generally applied to attenuate the axial thrust caused by a pressure difference between the front side of a shroud and the rear side of a hub of an impeller. The magnetic drive pump, the subject of this study, has a leak-free airtight structure and an integrated structure of the impeller and inner magnet. To prevent the performance degradation of the magnetic drive caused by heat during operation, complex cooling flow paths connected to balancing holes have been designed so that a sufficient amount of coolant would flow around the magnetic drive. Due to this spatial characteristic, when balancing holes are applied to a magnetic drive pump, the balancing hole flow path becomes very long compared to that of balancing holes applied to conventional pumps. When the balancing hole flow path is long, the flow path loss increases, which in turn increases the adverse effect of balancing holes on the pump performance. Therefore, the design... [more]

Numerical Simulation and Experimental Validation of an Oil Free Scroll Compressor
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: experimental validation, numerical model, scroll-compressor.
This paper presents a virtual model of a scroll compressor developed on the one-dimensional analysis software Simcenter Amesim®. The model is semi-empirical: it needs some physical details of the modelled machine (e.g., the cubic capacity), but, on the other hand, it does not require the geometrical features of the spirals, so it needs experimental data to calibrate it. The model also requires rotational speed and the outlet temperature as boundary conditions. The model predicts the power consumption and the mass flow rate and considers leakages and mechanical losses. After the model presentation, this paper describes the test bench and the obtained data used to calibrate and validate the model. At last, the calibration process is described, and the results are discussed. The calculated values fit the experimental data also in extrapolation, despite the model is simple and performs calculations within 7 s. Due to these characteristics, the model is suitable for being used in a larger m... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: first-principle, graphene/MoS2, interfacial thermal conductance, molecular dynamics, thermal conductivity.
The thermal conductivity and interface thermal conductance of graphene stacked MoS2 (graphene/MoS2) van der Waals heterostructure were studied by the first principles and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Firstly, two different heterostructures were established and optimized by VASP. Subsequently, we obtained the thermal conductivity (K) and interfacial thermal conductance (G) via MD simulations. The predicted Κ of monolayer graphene and monolayer MoS2 reached 1458.7 W/m K and 55.27 W/m K, respectively. The thermal conductance across the graphene/MoS2 interface was calculated to be 8.95 MW/m2 K at 300 K. The G increases with temperature and the interface coupling strength. Finally, the phonon spectra and phonon density of state were obtained to analyze the changing mechanism of thermal conductivity and thermal conductance.

Analysis and Design Guidelines for Current Control Loops of Grid-Connected Converters Based on Mathematical Models
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: AC grids, control design, mathematical modeling, multi-objective algorithm.
Having a method for analyzing and designing regulators of controls that contain many current loops such as active filters is not a trivial task. There can be many parameters of regulators and filters that must be carefully selected in order to fulfill certain desired requirements. For instance, these can be stability, dynamic response, robustness under uncertainty of parameters, and rejection capability to switching harmonics. Hence, this paper provides general analysis guidelines for designing current control loops by using mathematical models in an αβ reference frame. Then, by using the proposed modeling tool, a multi-objective tuning algorithm is proposed that helps obtain all the control loops’ regulator and filter parameters, meeting all the desired requirements. Thus, the proposed analysis and design methodology is illustrated by applying it to three different controls conceived in a dq rotating reference frame with PI (Proportional Integral) regulators. April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CO2 suppression, fire suppression, LES, synergistic effect, water droplets.
Recently, water has been employed as a supportive agent for the preparation of multiple suppressing agents including aqueous film forming foams (AFFF), which is combined with different kinds of gases for its various applications. In this study, the water mist is chosen for the gas-suppressing agent such as carbon dioxide. Our work investigated the suppression effects of water droplets on the n-heptane pool fire, and its mixture with carbon dioxide, respectively. The size and frequency of droplets with their effect on temperature and suppression was compared to observe the difference in the suppression. Initially, it was found that the droplets having a larger droplet size were found to be more efficient as compared to the smaller droplets with respect to the heat release rate, temperature, and radiation. Afterwards, a mixture of water droplets and carbon dioxide was simultaneously discharged to compare the difference between these two suppressing agents. It was found that the synergist... [more]

Numerical Modelling and Experimental Verification of the Low-Emission Biomass Combustion Process in a Domestic Boiler with Flue Gas Flow around the Combustion Chamber
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: biomass combustion, CFD modeling, pellet boiler, renewable heating.
The paper presents the results of numerical and experimental studies aimed at developing a new design of a 10 kW low-emission heating boiler fired with wood pellets. The boiler is to meet stringent requirements in terms of efficiency (η > 90%) and emissions per 10% O2: CO < 500 mg/Nm3, NOx ≤ 200 mg/Nm3, and dust ≤ 20 mg/Nm3; these emission restrictions are as prescribed in the applicable ECODESIGN Directive in the European Union countries. An innovative aspect of the boiler structure (not yet present in domestic boilers) is the circular flow of exhaust gases around the centrally placed combustion chamber. The use of such a solution ensures high-efficiency, low-emission combustion and meeting the requirements of ECODESIGN. The results of the numerical calculations were verified and confirmed experimentally, obtaining average emission values of the limited gases CO = 91 mg/Nm3, and NOx = 197 mg/Nm3. The temperature measured in the furnace is 450−500 °C and in the flue it was 157−197 °... [more]

Numerical Modeling of Ejector and Development of Improved Methods for the Design of Ejector-Assisted Refrigeration System
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, ejectors, empirical correlation, refrigeration cycle.
An ejector is a simple mechanical device that can be integrated with power generation or the refrigeration cycle to enhance their performance. Owing to the complex flow behavior in the ejector, the performance prediction of the ejector is done by numerical simulations. However, to evaluate the performance of an ejector integrated power cycle or refrigeration cycle, the need for simpler and more reliable thermodynamic models to estimate the performance of the ejector persists. This research, therefore, aims at developing a single mathematical correlation that can predict the ejector performance with reasonable accuracy. The proposed correlation relates the entrainment ratio and the pressure rise across the ejector to the area ratio and the mass flow rate of the primary flow. R141b is selected as the ejector refrigerant, and the results obtained through the proposed correlation are validated through numerical solutions. The comparison between the analytical and numerical with experimenta... [more]

Development and Application of a Flexible Modeling Approach to Reference Buildings for Energy Analysis
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building stock, energy analysis, flexible modeling approach, non-residential buildings, reference building.
This paper proposes a flexible modeling approach to develop a theoretical reference building (RB) for energy analysis. We designed an RB for five non-residential buildings, using dynamic simulation from statistically analyzed data of building stock in South Korea. For modeling, four subsets of data—form, envelope, system, and operation—were assessed. This study uses the autosizing function within EnergyPlus, to develop the RB. The proposed approach allows for a flexible design where capacities and flow rates of the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system match the newly defined RB model. This approach would be ideal for closing the gap between the architectural data and equipment elements. The RB developed in this study allows for performing energy performance analysis by end-use. The analysis results by the end-use can provide support for country-level greenhouse gas (GHG)-mitigation-strategy development.

A Holistic Approach to Electric Shared Mobility Systems Development—Modelling and Optimization Aspects
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: e-shared mobility, electric shared mobility, electric vehicles, new mobility, shared mobility challenges, shared mobility systems development, social network analysis, sustainable transport systems.
Due to the development of the shared economy, increasingly more shared mobility providers have launched services based on the use of electric vehicles. The increasing growth of electric shared mobility services has produced various types of problems that do not occur (or occur with a limited effect) under conventional shared mobility systems. This increase in electric shared mobility problems has led to many effects, including limitations of the system zones or going out of business. To avoid difficulties in the functioning of electric shared mobility systems, various scientific studies have been undertaken to model and optimize the operation of these systems. Modeling and optimization mainly relate to one category of the system—for example, only to bike sharing. However, to understand the system of electric shared mobility holistically, there is a need to define the criteria generally as stimulants or destimulants. Based on these assumptions, we conducted research on the identificatio... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bio-based building, coal consumption, energy simulation, heating energy, rural residential building, straw bale construction.
Due to the cold winters in northeast China, the energy consumption of the rural residential buildings is much higher in this region than in other regions. In this study, the energy sustainability of bio-based wall construction is examined through applications in rural residential buildings. Comparisons of the energy sustainability of the bio-based wall constructions and the conventional wall constructions are evaluated using IESVE-2019 computational simulation. The results show notable reductions in heating energy requirements and coal use, which is the major heating source for rural residential buildings in China. The results show that reductions of 45.82−204.07 kWh/m2/year in heating energy requirements and more than 40% in coal use are possible through application of bio-based wall constructions. The application of bio-based wall construction will result in lower seasonal air pollution and coal use through straw burning in northeast China.

CFD Analyses of Textured Surfaces for Tribological Improvements in Hydraulic Pumps
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD simulation, dynamic cavitation, textured surfaces.
In any hydraulic machine there are lubricated couplings that could become critical beyond certain operating conditions. This paper presents the simulation results concerning textured surfaces with the aim of improving the performance of lubricated couplings in relative motion. The texturing design requires much care to obtain good improvements, and it is essential to analyze both the geometric features of the dimples and the characteristics of the coupled surfaces, like the sliding velocity and gap height. For this purpose, several CFD simulations have been performed to study the behavior of the fluid bounded in the coupling, considering dimples with different shapes, size, and spatial distribution. The simulations consider the onset of gaseous cavitation to evaluate the influence of this phenomenon on the pressure distribution generated by the textured surface. The analyses have pointed out that it is critical to correctly predict the behavior of the textured surface in the presence o... [more]

Experimental and Numerical Analysis of the Gas Flow in the Axisymmetric Radial Clearance
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, experiment, flow coefficient, labyrinth seal, leakage, mini gap.
This paper focuses on the analysis of the gas flow in the axisymmetric mini gap bounded by the surface of the top of the labyrinth seal tooth and the surface of the body. It includes the results of experimental research and numerical calculations. Experimental research focused on the analysis of gas flow for six clearance heights in a wide range of pressure drops. Flow coefficients for various clearance heights obtained from the experiment can be divided into two data groups, the values of which differ significantly. To explain changes in the value of the gas flow coefficient for selected clearance heights, numerical analysis of the said gas flow was performed using the Fluent software. This analysis allowed us to explain the reason for the variability of the flow coefficient. This rese... [more]
