Dynamic Modeling and Simulation of Non-Interconnected Systems under High-RES Penetration: The Madeira Island Case
Stefanos Ntomalis, Petros Iliadis, Konstantinos Atsonios, Athanasios Nesiadis, Nikos Nikolopoulos, Panagiotis Grammelis.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BESS, high-RES penetration, Madeira island, non-interconnected island system, primary frequency control.
The defossilization of power generation is a prerequisite goal in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transit for a sustainable economy. Achieving this goal requires increasing the penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) such as solar and wind power. The gradual shrinking of conventional generation units in an energy map introduces new challenges to the stability of power systems as there is a considerable reduction of stored rotational energy in the synchronous generators (SGs) and the capability to control their power output, which has been taken for granted until today. Inertia and primary reserve reduction have a substantial effect on the ability of the power system to maintain its security and self-resilience during contingency events. Such issues become more evident in the case of non-interconnected islands (NII) as they have unique features associated with their small size and low inertia. The present study examines in depth the NII system of Madeira, which is co... [more]
Probabilistic Approaches to the Security Analysis of Smart Grid with High Wind Penetration: The Case of Jeju Island’s Power Grids
Sunoh Kim, Jin Hur.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Monte-Carlo simulation, parameter estimation, power flow calculation, power grid security limit, Weibull distribution.
As the importance of renewable generating resources has grown around the world, South Korea is also trying to expand the proportion of renewable generating resources in the power generation sector. Among the various renewable energy sources, wind generating resources are emerging as a key alternative to conventional power generations in the electricity sector in Korea accounted for 17.7 GW of total capacity by 2030. As wind generating resources are gradually replacing traditional generating resources, the system security and reliability are negatively affected because of the variability, due to intermittent outputs. Therefore, existing power grids will need to be correctly re-measured to cover the large scale of renewable energy, including wind generation. To expand the grid, we must understand the characteristics of renewable energy and the impact of its adoption in the grid. In this paper, we analyze various characteristics of wind power generation, and then we propose a probabilisti... [more]
Off-Grid DoA Estimation on Non-Uniform Linear Array Using Constrained Hermitian Matrix
Hyeonjin Chung, Jeungmin Joo, Sunwoo Kim.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: atomic norm minimization (ANM), continuous compressive sensing, non-uniform linear array (NULA), off-grid direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation, super-resolution.
In this paper, an off-grid direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation algorithm which can work on a non-uniform linear array (NULA) is proposed. The original semidefinite programming (SDP) representation of the atomic norm exploits a summation of one-rank matrices constructed by atoms, where the summation of one-rank matrices equals a Hermitian Toeplitz matrix when using the uniform linear array (ULA). On the other hand, when the antennas in the array are placed arbitrarily, the summation of one-rank matrices is a Hermitian matrix whose diagonal elements are equivalent. Motivated by this property, the proposed algorithm replaces the Hermitian Toeplitz matrix in the original SDP with the constrained Hermitian matrix. Additionally, when the antennas are placed symmetrically, the performance can be enforced by adding extra constraints to the Hermitian matrix. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves higher estimation accuracy and resolution than other algorithms on both... [more]

Keywords: Biofuels, bioprocesses, challenge-based learning, computer-based learning, energy engineering, higher education.
Due to the ever-growing pressure on our planet’s natural resources to supply energy, the production of bioethanol by fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass is increasingly important in courses related to engineering and energy. Moreover, recent changes in the teaching−learning paradigm make necessary the introduction of novel teaching tools where students are the protagonist of their education. In this context, the purpose of this study is to compare the results obtained after traditional lessons with those obtained after the implementation of various computer activities based on modeling and simulation of bioreactors to teach biorefinery concepts focused on bioethanol production. Berkeley Madonna was chosen as the digital simulation software package because it is user-friendly, fast, and easy to program. This software allowed students to gain experience writing models that let optimize fermentations in well-stirred bioreactors and others bioprocess of industrial interest. The student... [more]
On Applications of Elements Modelled by Fractional Derivatives in Circuit Theory
Jacek Gulgowski, Tomasz P. Stefański, Damian Trofimowicz.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: circuit simulation, circuit theory, fractional calculus, transmission lines.
In this paper, concepts of fractional-order (FO) derivatives are reviewed and discussed with regard to element models applied in the circuit theory. The properties of FO derivatives required for the circuit-level modeling are formulated. Potential problems related to the generalization of transmission-line equations with the use of FO derivatives are presented. It is demonstrated that some formulations of FO derivatives have limited applicability in the circuit theory. Out of the most popular approaches considered in this paper, only the Grünwald−Letnikov and Marchaud definitions (which are actually equivalent) satisfy the semigroup property and are naturally representable in the phasor domain. The generalization of this concept, i.e., the two-sided fractional Ortigueira−Machado derivative, satisfies the semigroup property, but its phasor representation is less natural. Other ideas (including the Riemann−Liouville and Caputo derivatives—with a finite or an infinite base point) seem to... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ‘Hill Charts’, hydro-electric plant, power hardware-in-the-loop, real-time simulation, reduced-scale model, testing and validation, variable speed operation.
Variable Speed Hydro-Electric Plant (VS-HEP) equipped with power electronics has been increasingly introduced into the hydraulic context. This paper is targeting a VS-HEP Power Hardware-In-the-Loop (PHIL) real-time simulation system, which is dedicated to different hydraulic operation schemes tests and control laws validation. Then, a proper hydraulic model will be the key factor for building an efficient PHIL real-time simulation system. This work introduces a practical and generalised modelling hydraulic modelling approach, which is based on ‘Hill Charts’ measurements provided by industrial manufacturers. The hydraulic static model is analytically obtained by using mathematical optimization routines. In addition, the nonlinear dynamic model of the guide vane actuator is introduced in order to evaluate the effects of the induced dynamics on the electric control performances. Moreover, the reduced-scale models adapted to different laboratory conditions can be established by applying sc... [more]
A Broadband Enhanced Structure-Preserving Reduced-Order Interconnect Macromodeling Method for Large-Scale Equation Sets of Transient Interconnect Circuit Problems
Ning Wang, Huifang Wang, Shiyou Yang.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: interconnect circuit, large scale equation set, model order reduction, transient response, wideband frequency.
In the transient analysis of an engineering power electronics device, the order of its equivalent circuit model is excessive large. To eliminate this issue, some model order reduction (MOR) methods are proposed in the literature. Compared to other MOR methods, the structure-preserving reduced-order interconnect macromodeling (SPRIM) based on Krylov subspaces will achieve a higher reduction radio and precision for large multi-port Resistor-Capacitor-Inductor (RCL) circuits. However, for very wide band frequency transients, the performance of a Krylov subspace-based MOR method is not satisfactory. Moreover, the selection of the expansion point in this method has not been comprehensively studied in the literature. From this point of view, a broadband enhanced structure-preserving reduced-order interconnect macromodeling (SPRIM) method is proposed to reduce the order of equation sets of a transient interconnect circuit model. In addition, a method is introduced to determine the optimal exp... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD ANSYS, Egyptian climate, solar still, thermal desalination.
With the rising population, environmental pollution, and social development, potable water is reducing and being contaminated day by day continually. Thus, several researchers have focused their studies on seas and oceans in order to get potable fresh water by desalination of their saltwater. Solar still of basin type is one of the available technologies to purify water because of free solar energy. The computational fluid dynamic CFD model of the solar still can significantly improve means for optimization of the solar still structure because it reduces the need for conducting large amount of experiments. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is presenting a multi-phase, three-dimensional CFD model, which predicts the performance of the solar still without using any experimental measurements, depending on the CFD solar radiation model. Simulated results are compared with experimental values of water and glass cover temperatures and yield of fresh water in climate conditions of She... [more]

Peng Li, Xingping Lai, Peilin Gong, Chao Su, Yonglu Suo.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep coal mine, roadway near goaf, roof cutting and pressure relief, similarity simulation.
Affected by high ground stress, the surrounding rock control of a roadway is one of the most important factors restricting the utilization of deep resources. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a method to improve the stress environment of the deep-buried roadway and reduce its deformation. The article focuses on the 121,302 machine roadway in Kouzidong coal mine to analyze the large deformations of roadways near goafs (RNGs) in deep coal mines and reveal the mechanisms related to pressure relief via roof cutting. Through physical simulation, overburdened structures and the migration laws of RNGs in deep coal mines are studied, and the overburdened RNGs will eventually have a double short-arm “F”-type suspended roof structure. The superposition movement of the structure is the prime cause for the large deformation of the RNGs considered here. Artificial roof cutting can weaken the superposition effect of the double “F” structure and induce the roof to produce a new fracture. Meanwhil... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: geomechanical model, HM coupled modeling, Molasse Basin, underground gas storage.
Hydromechanical models of gas storage in porous media provide valuable information for various applications ranging from the prediction of ground surface displacements to the determination of maximum reservoir pressure and storage capacity to maintain fault stability and caprock integrity. A workflow to set up such models is presented and applied to a former gas field in southern Germany for which transformation to a gas storage site is considered. The workflow comprises 1D mechanical earth modeling (1D MEM) to calculate elastic properties as well as a first estimate for the vertical and horizontal stresses at well locations by using log data. This information is then used to populate a 3D finite element model (3D MEM) which has been built from seismic data and comprises not only the reservoir but the entire overburden up to the earth’s surface as well as part of the underburden. The size of this model is 30 × 24 × 5 km3. The pore pressure field has been derived from dynamic fluid flow... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cooling panel, Energy Storage, overheating, passive cooling, PCM, TABS.
The focus of this research paper is to develop a verified simulation model for a cooling panel with integrated phase-change materials (PCMs)—a stainless steel panel filled with PCM and integrated hydronic piping circuit. This solution is targeted for passive cooling of residential buildings in Baltic Sea region that experience overheating for most of the year due to highly insulated building envelopes and extensive glazing—a phenomena for nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs). This approach aims to maintain comfortable indoor temperature all year round by passive means—free-cooling, adiabatic (evaporative) cooling or limited mechanical cooling. The simulations are performed with IDA ICE 4.8 and the measurements for simulation model verification are collected from a test chamber. The results show that reasonable agreement can be reached for simulated and experimentally measured data.

Keywords: ANFIS, data mining, digital elevation model, GIS, interpolation, solar radiation modeling.
High quality of solar radiation data is essential for solar resource assessment. For remote areas this is a challenge, as often only satellite data with low spatial resolution are available. This paper presents an interpolation method based on topographic data in digital elevation model format to improve the resolution of solar radiation maps. The refinement is performed with a data mining method based on first-order Sugeno type Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System. The training set contains topographic characteristics such as terrain aspect, slope and elevation which may influence the solar radiation distribution. An efficient sampling method is proposed to obtain representative training sets from digital elevation model data. The proposed geographic information system based approach makes this method reproducible and adaptable for any region. A case study is presented on the remote Amhara region in North Shewa, Ethiopia. Results are shown for interpolation of solar radiation data fr... [more]
Simulation of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Load Profiles in Office Buildings Based on Occupancy Data
Semen Uimonen, Matti Lehtonen.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand response, electric vehicles, load aggregation, load modeling, load profiling.
Transportation vehicles are a large contributor of the carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. Electric Vehicles (EVs) are a promising solution to reduce the CO2 emissions which, however, requires the right electric power production mix for the largest impact. The increase in the electric power consumption caused by the EV charging demand could be matched by the growing share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the power production. EVs are becoming a popular sustainable mean of transportation and the expansion of EV units due to the stochastic nature of charging behavior and increasing share of RES creates additional challenges to the stability in the power systems. Modeling of EV charging fleets allows understanding EV charging capacity and demand response (DR) potential of EV in the power systems. This article focuses on modeling of daily EV charging profiles for buildings with various number of chargers and daily events. The article presents a modeling approach based on the ch... [more]

Keywords: CFD modeling, hydrodynamics, particle suspension, stirred tank reactor.
The paper presents the simulation of a catalyst-paraffin oil slurry hydrodynamics under high pressure and temperature in a convex bottom reactor with a Rushton turbine which was conducted with an application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. An analysis to obtain a uniform distribution of solid catalyst particles suspended in paraffin oil was carried out as a potential for biomass liquefaction. The effects of the particle diameter, bed density, liquid viscosity, and the initial solid loading on slurry hydrodynamics in high pressure and temperature behavior were investigated using the Eulerian−Eulerian two-fluid model and the standard k-ε turbulence model. The main objective was to assess the performance in agitating highly concentrated slurries to obtain slurry velocity, concentration, the degree of homogeneity, and to examine their effect on the mixing quality. The results of the analysis are applied to predicting the impact of the most efficient conditions on slurry sus... [more]

Keywords: C-Si, cross-seasonal test, lighting-thermal-electricity performance, PV window.
PV windows can potentially produce electricity, reduce the air-conditioning load, and provide natural light. Cross-seasonal experimental tests for long period could eliminate the gap between real outdoor test and simulation estimation. In this research, the lighting-thermal-electricity performance of high-efficiency c-silicon PV windows was tested, and the improvement has been put forward according to the conditions. The long-term experiment was conducted cross different seasons, including summer, autumn, and winter seasons. The highest average power generation, 50W/m2, could be found in autumn. The average outside surface temperature of the PV window would reach 48 °C in sunny days in the autumn, which was higher than other seasons. Although the c-Si PV window maybe block the partial daylighting, the daylighting requirement still could be satisfied with the most days. Furthermore, the average Useful Daylight Illuminance was the highest in summer up to 0.79, and the average illuminatio... [more]

Keywords: buildings, dynamic simulation, hybrid solar, PV/T.
This study presents a techno-economic performance evaluation of a hybrid low-concentrating photovoltaic/thermal (LCPV/T) plant, which operates in a student sports and wellness center building situated at a university campus in Mexico. The solar plant comprises 144 LCPV/T collectors based on a hybridized version of a local parabolic trough technology. Dynamic thermal and electrical performance analyses were performed in the TRNSYS simulation studio. The results showed that the solar field could cover up to 72% of the hot water demand of the building during the summer season and 24% during the winter season. The hybrid system could annually save 7185 USD, accounting for heat (natural gas boiler) and electricity generation. However, the payback time was of 19.23 years, which was mainly attributed to a reduced natural gas price in Monterrey, Mexico. A new approach to evaluating the equivalent levelized cost of heat (LCOHeq), is proposed. This results in an LCOHeq of 0.065 USD/kWh, which is... [more]

Keywords: Chung transport, cryogenic nitrogen, cubic EOS, fuel injection and mixing, implicit LES, n-dodecane, OpenFOAM®, Peng-Robinson, real-fluid, supercritical conditions.
In the present numerical study, implicit large eddy simulations (LES) of non-reacting multi-components mixing processes of cryogenic nitrogen and n-dodecane fuel injections under transcritical and supercritical conditions are carried out, using a modified reacting flow solver, originally available in the open source software OpenFOAM®. To this end, the Peng-Robinson (PR) cubic equation of state (EOS) is considered and the solver is modified to account for the real-fluid thermodynamics. At high pressure conditions, the variable transport properties such as dynamic viscosity and thermal conductivity are accurately computed using the Chung transport model. To deal with the multicomponent species mixing, molar averaged homogeneous classical mixing rules are used. For the velocity-pressure coupling, a PIMPLE based compressible algorithm is employed. For both cryogenic and non-cryogenic fuel injections, qualitative and quantitative analyses are performed, and the results show significant eff... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ensemble learning, explainability, Machine Learning, Non-Technical Losses, supervised learning.
Utility companies have a great interest in identifying energy losses. Here, we focus on Non-Technical Losses (NTL), which refer to losses caused by utility theft or meter errors. Typically, utility companies resort to machine learning solutions to automate and optimise the identification of such losses. This paper extends an existing NTL-detection framework: by including knowledge-based NTL segmentation, we have detected some opportunities for improving the accuracy and the explanations provided to the utility company. Our improved models focus on specific types of NTL and therefore, the explanations provided are easier to interpret, allowing stakeholders to make more informed decisions. The improvements and results presented in the article may benefit other industrial frameworks.

Keywords: cold climate, Exergy, heat pumps, low-GWP refrigerants, Modelling, Simulation.
Heat pumps (HPs) are being developed with a new emphasis on cold climates. To lower the environmental impact of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, alternate low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants must also replace the exclusive use of the refrigerant R410A, preferably without re-engineering the mechanical hardware. In this paper, we analyze the performance of four low-GWP alternative refrigerants (R32, R452B, R454B, and R466A) relative to the conventional R410A and draw conclusions on the relative performances for providing heating in cold climates based on the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) 210/240 standard for two-speed heat pumps. The simulations are carried using the Department of Energy, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (DOE/ORNL) Heat Pump Design Model (HPDM), a well-known heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) modeling and design tool in the public domain and the HVAC research and development community. The results of the simulation a... [more]

Keywords: equilibrium height prediction model, Eulerian multiphase modeling, proppant transport mechanism, turbulence effect, water fracturing.
Water hydraulic fracturing involves pumping low viscosity fluid and proppant mixture into the artificial fracture under a high pumping rate. In that high Reynolds number conditions (HRNCs, Re > 2000), the turbulence effect is one of the key factors affecting proppant transportation and placement. In this paper, a Eulerian multiphase model was used to simulate the proppant particle transport in a parallel slot under HRNCs. Turbulence effects in high pumping rates and frictional stress among the proppant particles were taken into consideration, and the Johnson-Jackson wall boundary conditions were used to describe the particle-wall interaction. The numerical simulation result was validated with laboratory-scale slot experiment results. The simulation results demonstrate that the pattern of the proppant bank is significantly affected by the vortex near the wellbore, and the whole proppant transport process can be divided into four stages under HRNCs. Furthermore, the proppant placement st... [more]

Ce Peng, Guoying Lin, Shaopeng Zhai, Yi Ding, Guangyu He.
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep appliance group model, deep learning, deep user model, NILM, user behavior.
Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) increases awareness on user energy usage patterns. In this paper, an efficient and highly accurate NILM method is proposed featuring condensed representation, super-state and fusion of two deep learning based models. Condensed representation helps the two models perform more efficiently and preserve longer-term information, while super-state helps the model to learn correlations between appliances. The first model is a deep user model that learns user appliances usage patterns to predict the next appliance usage behavior based on past behaviors by capturing the dynamics of user behaviors history and appliances usage habits. The second model is a deep appliance group model that learns the characteristics of appliances with temporal and electrical information. These two models are then fused to perform NILM. The case study based on REFIT datasets demonstrates that the proposed NILM method outperforms two state-of-the-art benchmark methods.

Keywords: chemical membrane degradation, fuel cell, Modelling, PEMFC, perfluorinated sulfonic acid membrane, reactive oxygen species, sensitivity analysis.
The chemical degradation of the perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) ion-exchange membrane as a result of an attack from a radical species, originating as a by-product of the oxygen reduction reaction, represents a significant limiting factor in a wider adoption of low-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (LT-PEMFCs). The efficient mathematical modeling of these processes is therefore a crucial step in the further development of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Starting with an extensive kinetic modeling framework, describing the whole range of chemical processes leading to the membrane degradation, we use the mathematical method of sensitivity analysis to systematically reduce the number of both chemical species and reactions needed to efficiently and accurately describe the chemical degradation of the membrane. The analysis suggests the elimination of chemical reactions among the radical species, which is supported by the physicochemical consideration of the modeled rea... [more]

Keywords: electricity consumption, electricity theft detection, electricity thefts, imbalanced data, smart grids, smart meter.
Electricity is widely used around 80% of the world. Electricity theft has dangerous effects on utilities in terms of power efficiency and costs billions of dollars per annum. The enhancement of the traditional grids gave rise to smart grids that enable one to resolve the dilemma of electricity theft detection (ETD) using an extensive amount of data formulated by smart meters. This data are used by power utilities to examine the consumption behaviors of consumers and to decide whether the consumer is an electricity thief or benign. However, the traditional data-driven methods for ETD have poor detection performances due to the high-dimensional imbalanced data and their limited ETD capability. In this paper, we present a new class balancing mechanism based on the interquartile minority oversampling technique and a combined ETD model to overcome the shortcomings of conventional approaches. The combined ETD model is composed of long short-term memory (LSTM), UNet and adaptive boosting (Ada... [more]

Keywords: agent-based model, energy use behavior, energy use intensity, residential building energy consumption, scenario simulation, severe cold cities.
Accurate simulation and prediction of occupants’ energy use behavior are crucial in building energy consumption research. However, few studies have focused on household energy use behavior in severely cold regions that have unique energy use patterns because of the low demand of cooling in summer and the use of central heating system in winter. Thus, we developed an agent-based model to simulate the household electricity use behavior in severely cold regions, according to data for Harbin, China. The model regards apartments, residents, household appliances, and energy-management departments as agents and generates the household electricity consumption with respect to time, temperature, and energy-saving events. The simulation parameters include basic information of the residents, their energy-saving awareness, their appliance use behaviors, and the impact of energy-saving management. Electricity use patterns are described by decision-making mechanisms and probabilities obtained through... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Delayed DES, H-Darrieus, micro wind power generation, VAWT.
The simulation of very small vertical axis wind turbines is often a complex task due to the very low Reynolds number effects and the strong unsteadiness related to the rotor operation. Moreover, the high boundary layer instabilities, which affect these turbines, strongly limits their efficiency compared to micro horizontal axis wind turbines. However, as the scientific interest toward micro wind turbine power generation is growing for powering small stand-alone devices, Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs)might be very suitable for this kind of application as well. Furthermore, micro wind turbines are widely used for wind tunnel testing, as the wind tunnel dimensions are usually quite limited. In order to obtain a better comprehension of the fluid dynamics of such micro rotors, in the present paper the authors demonstrate how to develop an accurate CFD 2D model of a micro H-Darrieus wind turbine, inherently characterized by highly unstable operating conditions. The rotor was tested in t... [more]
