Open Source Modelling and Simulation of the Nordic Hydro Power System
Iasonas Kouveliotis-Lysikatos, Angelica Waernlund, Manuel Marin, Mikael Amelin, Lennart Söder.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy system model, hydro power, nordic system, open-source model.
In this paper, we present the results from the development and the simulation of a hydro power model for Sweden and Norway, using SpineOpt software and openly available data. We employ (i) hydrological and market data from the Nordic region and (ii) the abstract representation of the multi-vector modelling and simulation engine SpineOpt, to compile an open-source model of a large portion of the hydro power plants of the Nordic region, for conducting realistic hydro power generation studies. We place the hydro power system operation within the structuring of the Nordic electricity market and study the effect that different objectives have on the operational results. By employing the SpineOpt functionalities for automating the transformation of the temporal resolution of the model, we explore the trade-of between its computational burden and accuracy.

Keywords: ANSYS coupled analysis, design methods, FEM, fuse links, low voltage fuses, modeling and simulation, transient thermal analysis.
In this paper, a detailed three-dimensional, transient, finite element method of fuse link NH000 gG 100 A is proposed. The thermal properties during the operation of the fuses under nominal (100 A) and custom conditions (110 and 120 A) are the main focus of the analyses that were conducted. The work concerns both the outside elements of the fuse link (ceramic body) and the elements inside (current circuit). Both the distribution of the electric current and its impact on the temperature of the construction parts of the fuses during their operating mode have been described. Temperature distribution, power losses and energy dissipation were measured using a numerical model. In order to verify and validate the model, two independent teams of scientists executed experimental research, during which the temperature was measured on different parts of the device involving the rated current. Finally, the two sets of results were put together and compared with those obtained from the simulation t... [more]
Biomass and Lipid Productivity by Two Algal Strains of Chlorella sorokiniana Grown in Hydrolysate of Water Hyacinth
Swati Dahiya, Raja Chowdhury, Wendong Tao, Pradeep Kumar.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biomass productivity, Chlorella sorokiniana, FAME (fatty acid methyl esters), hydrolysate, lipid, nutrient amended media.
Hydrolysate prepared from the chemical hydrolysis of water hyacinth biomass contains a high amount of solubilised carbohydrate and nutrients. This hydrolysate was utilised as a medium for the cultivation of two strains of Chlorella sorokiniana, isolated from a municipal wastewater treatment plant using two different media, i.e., BG-11 and Knop’s medium. Different light intensities, light−dark cycles, and various concentrations of external carbon sources (monosaccharides and inorganic carbon) were used to optimise the microalgal growth. For the accumulation of lipids and carbohydrates, the microalgal strains were transferred to nutrient amended medium (N-amended and P-amended). It was observed that the combined effect of glucose, inorganic carbon, and a 12:12 h light−dark cycle proved to be the optimum parameters for high biomass productivity (~200 mg/L/day). For Chlorella sorokiniana 1 (isolated from BG-11 medium), the maximum carbohydrate content (22%) was found in P-amended medium (N... [more]
Simplified Transition and Turbulence Modeling for Oscillatory Pipe Flows
Alexander Shapiro, Gershon Grossman, David Greenblatt.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: pipe flow, pulse-tube cryogenic coolers, turbulence modeling, unsteady turbulent flow, Womersley number.
One-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes computations were performed for oscillatory transitional and turbulent pipe flows and the results were validated against existing experimental data for a wide variety of oscillatory Reynolds and Womersley numbers. An unsteady version of the Johnson−King model was implemented with optional near-wall modification to account for temporal pressure gradient variations, and the predictions were compared with those of the Spalart−Allmaras and k−ε turbulence models. Transition and relaminarization were based on empirical Womersley number correlations and assumed to occur instantaneously: in the former case, this assumption was valid, but in the latter case, deviations between data and predictions were observed. In flows where the oscillatory Reynolds numbers are substantially higher than the commonly accepted steady critical value (~2000), fully or continuously turbulent models produced the best correspondence with experimental data. Cri... [more]
Pore-Scale Modelling of Solvent-Based Recovery Processes
Bita Bayestehparvin, S.M. Farouq Ali, Mohammad Kariznovi, Jalal Abedi.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: non-equilibrium phase behavior, pore-scale simulation, solvent-based recovery processes, VAPEX.
A need for a reduction in energy intensity and greenhouse gas emissions of bitumen and heavy oil recovery processes has led to the invention of several methods where mass-transfer-based recovery processes in terms of cold or heated solvent injection are used to reduce bitumen viscosity rather than steam injection. Despite the extensive numerical and experimental investigations, the field results are not always aligned to what is predicted unless several history matches are done. These discrepancies can be explained by investigating the mechanisms involved in mass transfer and corresponding viscosity reduction at the pore level. A two-phase multicomponent pore-scale simulator is developed to be used for realistic porous media simulation. The simulator developed predicts the chamber front velocity and chamber propagation in agreement with 2D experimental data in the literature. The simulator is specifically used for vapor extraction (VAPEX) modelling in a 2D porous medium. It was found t... [more]

Cheng Liu, Hang Yu.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, data center, immersion, Optimization, two-phase cooling.
An efficient cooling system for data centers can boost the working efficiency of servers and promote energy savings. In this study, a laboratory experiment and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation were performed to explore the performance of a two-phase cooling system. The coefficient of performance (COP) and partial power usage effectiveness (pPUE) of the proposed system was evaluated under various IT (Information Technology) loads. The relationship between the interval of the two submerged servers and their surface temperatures was evaluated by CFD analysis, and the minimum intervals that could maintain the temperature of the server surfaces below 85 °C were obtained. Experimental results show that as server power increases, COP increases pPUE decreases. In one experiment, the COP increased from 19.0 to 26.7, whereas pPUE decreased from 1.053 to 1.037. The exergy efficiency of this system ranges from 12.65% to 18.96%, and the tank side accounts for most of the exergy destruc... [more]
A Long Short-Term Memory Neural Network for the Low-Cost Prediction of Soot Concentration in a Time-Dependent Flame

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, estimator, LSTM, neural network, soot concentration, transient diffusion flame.
Particulate matter (soot) emissions from combustion processes have damaging health and environmental effects. Numerical techniques with varying levels of accuracy and computational time have been developed to model soot formation in flames. High-fidelity soot models come with a significant computational cost and as a result, accurate soot modelling becomes numerically prohibitive for simulations of industrial combustion devices. In the present study, an accurate and computationally inexpensive soot-estimating tool has been developed using a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network. The LSTM network is used to estimate the soot volume fraction (fv) in a time-varying, laminar, ethylene/air coflow diffusion flame with 20 Hz periodic fluctuation on the fuel velocity and a 50% amplitude of modulation. The LSTM neural network is trained using data from CFD, where the network inputs are gas properties that are known to impact soot formation (such as temperature) and the network output is... [more]
Reduced-Order Modelling with Domain Decomposition Applied to Multi-Group Neutron Transport

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: domain decomposition, Model Reduction, neutron diffusion equation, reactor physics, reduced-order modelling.
Solving the neutron transport equations is a demanding computational challenge. This paper combines reduced-order modelling with domain decomposition to develop an approach that can tackle such problems. The idea is to decompose the domain of a reactor, form basis functions locally in each sub-domain and construct a reduced-order model from this. Several different ways of constructing the basis functions for local sub-domains are proposed, and a comparison is given with a reduced-order model that is formed globally. A relatively simple one-dimensional slab reactor provides a test case with which to investigate the capabilities of the proposed methods. The results show that domain decomposition reduced-order model methods perform comparably with the global reduced-order model when the total number of reduced variables in the system is the same with the potential for the offline computational cost to be significantly less expensive.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bioreactors, carbon monoxide, composting, emission modeling, employees safety, occupational health and safety.
Advanced technologies call for composting indoors for minimized impact on the surrounding environment. However, enclosing compost piles inside halls may cause the accumulation of toxic pollutants, including carbon monoxide (CO). Thus, there is a need to assess the occupational risk to workers that can be exposed to CO concentrations > 300 ppm at the initial stage of the process. The objectives were to (1) develop a model of CO accumulation in the headspace of the bioreactor during organic waste composting and (2) assess the impact of headspace ventilation of enclosed compost. The maximum allowable CO level inside the bioreactor headspace for potential short-term occupational exposure up to 10 min was 100 ppm. The composting was modeled in the horizontal static reactor over 14 days in seven scenarios, differing in the ratio of headspace-to-waste volumes (H:W) (4:1, 3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4). Headspace CO concentration exceeded 100 ppm in each variant with the maximum value of 36.1%... [more]
Evaluation of Pressure Resonance Phenomena in DCT Actuation Circuits
Stefano Terzi, Luca Montorsi, Massimo Milani.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: actuation circuit, CFD-1D, Gerotor pump, hydraulic resonance, order tracking, pressure oscillation.
The paper investigates hydraulic wave propagation phenomena through hydraulic circuits of power transmission systems by means of numerical approaches. The actuation circuit of a Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) power transmission system supplied by a Gerotor pump is analyzed. A steady state approach is adopted to detect resonance phenomena due to Gerotor design parameters and circuit lengths, while one-dimensional numerical models are implemented to predict the pressure oscillations through the hydraulic ducts for the whole pump operating domain. CFD-1D pipelines are adopted to address the pressure oscillation behavior through the hydraulic pipeline, while spectral maps and order tracking techniques are used to evaluate their fluctuation intensity in function of the pump speed rate. The numerical models are validated with experimental tests performed on an ad hoc test rig for power transmission systems and a good match is found between the numerical and the experimental results. April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ammonia injection, ammonia injection, denitrification, flow control, molar ratio, numerical analysis.
The selective catalytic reduction method is a useful method for the denitrification process of exhaust gas emitted from industrial facilities. The distribution of the ammonia−nitrogen oxide mixing ratio at the inlet of the catalyst layers is important in the denitrification process. In this study, a computational analysis technique was used to improve the uniformity of the NH3/NO molar ratio by controlling the flow rate of the ammonia injection nozzle according to the flow distribution of nitrogen oxides in the inlet exhaust gas of the denitrification facility. The application model was simplified to the two-dimensional array adopted from the existing selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process in the large-scaled coal-fired power plant. As the inlet conditions, four (4) types of flow pattern were simulated, i.e., parabolic, upper-skewed, lower-skewed, and random. The flow rate of the eight (8) nozzles installed in the ammonia injection grid was controlled by Design Xplorer as the opti... [more]
A Fully Meshless Approach to the Numerical Simulation of Heat Conduction Problems over Arbitrary 3D Geometries
Davide Miotti, Riccardo Zamolo, Enrico Nobile.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CAE, heat conduction, Julia, meshless, RBF-FD.
One of the goals of new CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) software is to reduce both time and costs of the design process without compromising accuracy. This result can be achieved, for instance, by promoting a “plug and play” philosophy, based on the adoption of automatic mesh generation algorithms. This in turn brings about some drawbacks, among others an unavoidable loss of accuracy due to the lack of specificity of the produced discretization. Alternatively it is possible to rely on the so called “meshless” methods, which skip the mesh generation process altogether. The purpose of this paper is to present a fully meshless approach, based on Radial Basis Function generated Finite Differences (RBF-FD), for the numerical solution of generic elliptic PDEs, with particular reference to time-dependent and steady 3D heat conduction problems. The absence of connectivity information, which is a peculiar feature of this meshless approach, is leveraged in order to develop an efficient procedur... [more]

Kristina Navickaitė, Michael Penzel, Christian R. H. Bahl, Kurt Engelbrecht.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD modelling, enhanced heat transfer, nature inspired geometry, turbulent flow region.
In this article, the performance of double corrugated tubes applied in a tube-in-shell heat exchanger is analysed and compared to the performance of a heat exchanger equipped with straight tubes. The CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis was performed considering a turbulent flow regime at several mass flow rates. It is observed that the double corrugated geometry does not have a significant impact on the pressure drop inside the analysed heat exchanger, while it has the potential to increase its thermal performance by up to 25%. The ε−NTU (effectiveness−number of transfer units) relation also demonstrates the advantage of using double corrugated tubes in tube-in-shell heat exchangers over straight tubes.

Keywords: combustion, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), dual-fuel (DF) engine, emission, natural gas (NG), numerical simulation.
This paper presents research on the combustion and emission characteristics of a four-stroke Natural gas−Diesel dual-fuel marine engine at full load. The AVL FIRE R2018a (AVL List GmbH, Graz, Austria) simulation software was used to conduct three-dimensional simulations of the combustion process and emission formations inside the engine cylinder in both diesel and dual-fuel mode to analyze the in-cylinder pressure, temperature, and emission characteristics. The simulation results were then compared and showed a good agreement with the measured values reported in the engine’s shop test technical data. The simulation results showed reductions in the in-cylinder pressure and temperature peaks by 1.7% and 6.75%, while NO, soot, CO, and CO2 emissions were reduced up to 96%, 96%, 86%, and 15.9%, respectively, in the dual-fuel mode in comparison with the diesel mode. The results also show better and more uniform combustion at the late stage of the combustions inside the cylinder when operatin... [more]

Keywords: activation energy, effective diffusivity, lawsone, Lawsonia inermis, ultrasound.
The effect of drying temperature and the application of ultrasound on drying kinetics of Lawsonia inermis (henna) leaves and the extraction of lawsone from the dried samples was addressed. Indeed, henna leaves were dried with and without the application of ultrasound (21.7 kHz, 30.8 kW/m3) at 40, 50 and 60 °C with a constant air velocity (1 m/s). As expected, both the increase of temperature and the application of ultrasound decreased the drying time and increased the rate of extraction of the lawsone. The values of the effective diffusion coefficients obtained were used to quantify this influence showing the value increases with higher drying temperature and the application of ultrasound. Moreover, the influence of temperature was quantified by the estimation of the activation energy from an Arrhenius-type equation (46.25 kJ/mol in the case of drying without ultrasound application and 44.06 kJ/mol in the case of ultrasonically-assisted drying). Regarding the influence of studied varia... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air source heat pump, energy simulation, floor surface temperature, local discomfort, radiant floor heating.
The objective of this research is to establish an appropriate operating strategy for a radiant floor heating system that additionally has an air source heat pump for providing convective air heating separately, leading to heating energy saving and thermal comfort in residential buildings. To determine the appropriate optimal operating ratio of each system taking charge of combined heating systems, the energy consumption of the entire system was drawn, and the adaptive floor surface temperature was reviewed based on international standards and literature on thermal comfort. For processing heating loads with radiant floor heating and air source heating systems, the heating capacity of radiant floor heating by 1 °C variation in floor temperature was calculated, and the remaining heating load was handled by the heating capacity of the convective air heating heat pump. Consequently, when the floor temperature was 25 °C, all heating loads were removed by radiant floor heating only. When hand... [more]

Keywords: bearing fault, diagnosis, long short-term memory (LSTM), short-circuit fault, short-time Fourier-transform (STFT).
Various industrial fields use motors as key power sources, and their importance is increasing. In motor manufacturing, various tests are conducted for each motor before shipping. The no-load test is one such test, in which, for instance, the current flowing into the motor and temperature of the bearing is measured to confirm whether they are within specific values. Reducing labor, cost, and time in identifying an initially defective product requires a simple and reliable method. This study proposes a new diagnosis to identify the motor conditions based on the rotating sound of the motor in the no-load test. First, the rotating sounds of motors were measured using several healthy motors and motors with faults. Second, their sound characteristics were analyzed, and it was found that the characteristic signals appeared in a specific frequency range periodically. Then, considering these phenomena, a diagnostic method based on deep learning was proposed to judge the faults using long short-... [more]
Pore-Scale Simulation of Confined Phase Behavior with Pore Size Distribution and Its Effects on Shale Oil Production
Jingwei Huang, Hongsheng Wang.
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compositional simulation, lattice Boltzmann method, pore size distribution, vapor-liquid equilibrium.
Confined phase behavior plays a critical role in predicting production from shale reservoirs. In this work, a pseudo-potential lattice Boltzmann method is applied to directly model the phase equilibrium of fluids in nanopores. First, vapor-liquid equilibrium is simulated by capturing the sudden jump on simulated adsorption isotherms in a capillary tube. In addition, effect of pore size distribution on phase equilibrium is evaluated by using a bundle of capillary tubes of various sizes. Simulated coexistence curves indicate that an effective pore size can be used to account for the effects of pore size distribution on confined phase behavior. With simulated coexistence curves from pore-scale simulation, a modified equation of state is built and applied to model the thermodynamic phase diagram of shale oil. Shifted critical properties and suppressed bubble points are observed when effects of confinement is considered. The compositional simulation shows that both predicted oil and gas pro... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrothermal stress, HVDC cable, load current, space charge, trapping characteristics.
Space charge behavior has a strong impact on the long-term operation reliability of high voltage−direct current (HVDC) cables. This study intended to reveal the effect of trap density and depth on the space charge and electric field evolution behavior in HVDC cable insulation under different load currents and voltages by combined numerical bipolar charge transport (BCT) and thermal field simulation. The results show that when the load current is 1800 A (normal value), the temperature difference between the inside and the outside of the insulation is 20 °C, space charge accumulation and electric field distortion become more serious with the increase in the trap depth (Et) from 0.80 to 1.20 eV for the trap densities (Nt) of 10 × 1019 and 80 × 1019 m−3, and become more serious with the increase in Nt from 10 × 1019 to 1000 × 1019 m−3 for Et = 0.94 eV. Simultaneously decreasing trap depth and trap density (such as Et = 0.80 eV, Nt = 10 × 1019 m−3) or increasing trap depth and trap density... [more]

Keywords: Colombian power system, distribution system, electric mobility, electric vehicles, EV load model, load flow, Monte Carlo simulation, power distribution.
In preparation for the electric mobility technological transition in Colombia, an impact assessment of the electric power system is required, considering the increasing loading that must be able to be managed in the future. In this paper, a plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) charging simulation methodology is developed in order to dimension the impact of this type of load on power grids. PEV electric properties, user charging behaviors, geographic location, trip distances, and other variables of interest are modeled from empirical or known probability distributions and later evaluated in different scenarios using Monte Carlo simulation and load flow analysis. This methodology is later applied to the transmission network of Antioquia (a department of Colombia) resulting in load increases of up to 40% on transmission lines and 20% on transformers in a high PEV penetration scenario in 2030, increases that are well within the expected grid capacity for that year, avoiding the need for addition... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacitive divider, capacitor, expressions, high voltage, Modelling, stray capacitance, voltage divider.
Stray capacitances (SCs) are a serious issue in high-voltage (HV) applications. Their presence can alter the circuit or the operation of a device, resulting in wrong or even disastrous consequences. To this purpose, in this work, we describe the modeling of SCs in HV capacitive dividers. Such modeling does not rely on finite element analysis or complicated geometries; instead, it starts from an equivalent circuit of a conventional measurement setup described by the standard IEC 61869-11. Once the equivalent model including the SCs is found, closed expressions of the SCs are derived starting from the ratio error definition. Afterwards, they are validated in a simulation environment by implementing various circuit configurations. The results demonstrate the expressions applicability and effectiveness; hence, thanks to their simplicity, they can be implemented by system operators, researchers, and manufacturers avoiding the use of complicated methods and technologies.

The current paper evaluates the thermal performance of immersion cooling for an Electric Vehicle (EV) battery module comprised of NCA-chemistry based cylindrical 21700 format Lithium-ion cells. Efficacy of immersion cooling in improving maximum cell temperature, cell’s temperature gradient, cell-to-cell temperature differential, and pressure drop in the module are investigated by direct comparison with a cold-plate-cooled battery module. Parametric analyses are performed at different module discharge C-rates and coolant flow rates to understand the sensitivity of each cooling strategy to important system performance parameters. The entire numerical analysis is performed using a validated 3D time-accurate Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodology in STAR-CCM+. Results demonstrate that immersion cooling due its higher thermal conductance leads to a lower maximum cell temperature and lower temperature gradients within the cells at high discharge rates. However, a higher rate of heat... [more]

Keywords: incremental conductance (InC), maximum power point (MPP), maximum power point tracking (MPPT), O), perturb and observe (P&amp, self-predictive incremental conductance (SPInC).
This paper presents a new version of the incremental conductance algorithm for more accurate tracking of the maximum power point (MPP). The modified algorithm is called self-predictive incremental conductance (SPInC), and it recognizes the operational region. It is capable of detecting dynamic conditions, and it detects sudden changes in power resulting from changes in the intensity of radiation or temperature. By selecting the appropriate step size, it obtains maximum power from the panel at any moment. The improved algorithm reduces output power ripple and increases the efficiency of the system by detecting the operating area and selecting the appropriate step size for each region. The SPInC algorithm divides the system’s work areas into three operating zones. It calculates the size of the appropriate step changes for each region after identifying the regions, which allows for more accurate tracking of the MPP and increases the system efficiency at a speed equal to the speed of the c... Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Eulerian–Lagrangian, high-G acceleration, Process Intensification, Radial Multizone Dryer, spray drying, vortex chamber.
In this paper, an intensified spray-drying process in a novel Radial Multizone Dryer (RMD) is analyzed by means of CFD. A three-dimensional Eulerian−Lagrangian multiphase model is applied to investigate the effect of solids outlet location, relative hot/cold airflow ratio, and droplet size on heat and mass transfer characteristics, G-acceleration, residence time, and separation efficiency of the product. The results indicate that the temperature pattern in the dryer is dependent on the solids outlet location. A stable, symmetric spray behavior with maximum evaporation in the hot zone is observed when the solids outlet is placed at the periphery of the vortex chamber. The maximum product separation efficiency (85 wt %) is obtained by applying high G-acceleration (at relative hot/cold ratio of 0.75) and narrow droplet size distribution (45−70 µm). The separation of different sized particles with distinct drying times is also observed. Smaller particles (<32 µm) leave the reactor via t... [more]

Keywords: coaxial quadrotor, drag-like effects, UAV model, unmanned aerial vehicle.
In this paper, an easily implementable coaxial quadrotor model and its validation on data from a real unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), are presented. The proposed mathematical model consists of two parts: description of orientation and position of the UAV in the three-dimensional space. It takes into consideration the gyroscopic effect, influence of the Coriolis force, viscous friction and a several drag-like effects (blade flapping, rotor drag, translational drag and profile drag). In contrast to multirotor models available in the literature, this one is characterized by complementarity in relation to the available control techniques. Depending on selection of these techniques, the model can be narrowed (simplified) to meet the needs without the loss of behaviour adequacy to a real UAV.
