A Comparison of Advanced Boiling Water Reactor Simulations between Serpent/CTF and Polaris/DYN3D: Steady State Operational Characteristics and Burnup Evolution
Seddon Atkinson, Anna Detkina, Dzianis Litskevich, Bruno Merk.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: modelling &amp, Nuclear, nuclear reactors, Simulation, strategic development.
High fidelity modelling for nuclear power plant analysis is becoming more common due to advances in modelling software and the availability of high-performance computers. However, to design, develop and regulate new light water nuclear reactors there are, up until now, limited requirements for high fidelity methods due to the already well-established computational methods already being widely accepted. This article explores the additional detail which can be obtained when using high fidelity methods through Monte Carlo/Sub-channel analysis compared to industrial methods of cross-section/nodal analysis using the Advanced Boiling Water Reactor as a case study. This case study was chosen due to the challenges in modelling two phase flow and the high levels of heterogeneity within the fuel assembly design. The article investigates how to implement such an approach, from a bottom-up procedure, by analysing each stage of the modelling process.
The Combustion Characteristics of Double Ramps in a Strut-Based Scramjet Combustor
A. Antony Athithan, S. Jeyakumar, Norbert Sczygiol, Mariusz Urbanski, A. Hariharasudan.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion efficiency, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), hydrogen jet, ramp, scramjet, strut injection.
This paper focuses on the influence of ramp locations upstream of a strut-based scramjet combustor under reacting flow conditions that are numerically investigated. In contrast, a computational study is adopted using Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations with the Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model. The numerical results of the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt or German Aerospace Centre (DLR) scramjet model are validated with the reported experimental values that show compliance within the range, indicating that the adopted simulation method can be extended for other investigations as well. The performance of the ramps in the strut-based scramjet combustor is analyzed based on parameters such as wall pressures, combustion efficiency and total pressure loss at various axial locations of the combustor. From the numerical shadowgraph, more shock interactions are observed upstream of the strut injection region for the ramp cases, which decelerates the flow... [more]
Dynamic Performance of Planetary Gear Joint for Satellite Antenna Driving Mechanism Considering Multi-Clearance Coupling
Jianchao Han, Lei Liang, Yang Zhao.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic performance, multi-clearance coupling, multibody dynamics, planetary gear joint.
Dynamic pointing and tracking accuracy are the most relevant indicators of dynamic performance for the satellite antenna driving mechanism. Multi-clearance coupling in the joints will incur high-frequency vibration and dynamic errors of the system. Joints of existing analytical models are generally oversimplified as planar revolute hinges, which ignore the coupling effect of multi-clearance. It cannot proficiently predict the dynamic behavior of the driving mechanism with multi-clearance on the orbit. To address this problem, a typical 2K-H planetary gear joint model with multi-clearance coupling has been developed by considering radial clearance, backlash, tooth profile error, time-varying meshing stiffness, and damping. A dynamic model of a typical dual-axis driving mechanism is established to analyze the dynamic characteristics of multibody systems with planetary gear joints. The effects of rotational speed, radial clearance, backlash, and their coupling on the dynamic performance o... [more]
Diffuser Total Efficiency Using Generalized Actuator Disc Model and Its Maximization Method
Shigeo Yoshida, Masataka Motoyama, Peter Jamieson, Koij Matsuoka.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: generalized actuator disc, total diffuser efficiency, total power coefficient.
The diffuser total efficiency was formulated and defined based on the generalized actuator disc model for the index of the efficiency of the diffuser-alone of the diffuser-augmented wind turbines. An optimization method to maximize the diffuser total efficiency was developed using a genetic algorithm and axisymmetric computational fluid dynamics. A case study was conducted for a 10% chord-to-diameter ratio, 2% thickness-to-chord plate, and the crest position at 50% chord of the diffuser. The optimal result showed a diffuser total efficiency of 1.087. Furthermore, 1392 (=48 population × 29 generations) simulation cases of the optimization process showed that high diffuser total efficiency appears at a low-drag coefficient, high-lift coefficient, and 15−25% low diffuser height-to-chord ratio.
Demand Response as a Real-Time, Physical Hedge for Retail Electricity Providers: The Electric Reliability Council of Texas Market Case Study
Andrew Blohm, Jaden Crawford, Steven A. Gabriel.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand response, economic dispatch, energy hedge, HVAC, IoT, load shifting, physical hedge, real-time, REP, residential load.
Residential demand response (DR) programs are generally administered through an electricity distribution utility, or an electric grid operator. These programs typically reduce electricity consumption by inducing behavioral changes in the occupants of participating households. We propose implementing a wholesale-price-sensitive residential DR program through the retail electricity provider (REP), who has more naturally aligned incentives to avoid high wholesale electricity prices and maintain customer satisfaction, as compared to distribution utilities, grid operators, and the average residential consumer. Retail electricity providers who serve residential consumers are exposed to substantial price risk as they generally have a portion of their portfolio exposed to variable real-time wholesale electricity prices, despite charging their residential customers a fixed retail electricity price. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate that demand response, executed through internet-con... [more]
Utilising Open Geospatial Data to Refine Weather Variables for Building Energy Performance Evaluation—Incident Solar Radiation and Wind-Driven Infiltration Modelling
Kristian Skeie, Arild Gustavsen.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ISO 52016-1, meteorological reanalysis data, satellite-based solar radiation data, single-zone infiltration, thermal building performance.
In building thermal energy characterisation, the relevance of proper modelling of the effects caused by solar radiation, temperature and wind is seen as a critical factor. Open geospatial datasets are growing in diversity, easing access to meteorological data and other relevant information that can be used for building energy modelling. However, the application of geospatial techniques combining multiple open datasets is not yet common in the often scripted workflows of data-driven building thermal performance characterisation. We present a method for processing time-series from climate reanalysis and satellite-derived solar irradiance services, by implementing land-use, and elevation raster maps served in an elevation profile web-service. The article describes a methodology to: (1) adapt gridded weather data to four case-building sites in Europe; (2) calculate the incident solar radiation on the building facades; (3) estimate wind and temperature-dependent infiltration using a single-... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compressible fluid, Computational Fluid Dynamics, eco-friendly, gear pump, overset mesh, volumetric efficiency.
This paper wants to investigate the effects of eco-friendly fluids on the thermo-fluid-dynamic performance of external gear pumps in order to provide a first response to the increasingly urgent demands of the green economy. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach based on the overset mesh technique was developed for the simulation of the full 3D geometry of an industrial pump, including all the characteristic leakages between components. A sensibility analysis of the numerical model with respect to different fluid properties was performed on a commonly used mineral oil, showing the key role of the fluid compressibility on the prediction of the pump volumetric efficiency. Moreover, the influence of temperature internal variations on both fluid density and viscosity were included. The BIOHYDRAN TMP 46 eco-friendly industrial oil and olive oil were further considered in this work, and the results of the simulations were compared for the three fluid configurations. Keywords: anisotropic thermal conductivity coefficient, Computational Fluid Dynamics, fixed-bed reactor, porous media.
This manuscript presents a simplified method of modeling fixed-bed reactors based on the porous medium. The proposed method primarily allows the necessity of precisely mapping the internal structure of the bed—which usually is done using real object imaging techniques (like X-ray tomography) or numerical methods (like discrete element method (DEM))—to be avoided. As a result, problems with generating a good quality numerical mesh at the particles’ contact points using special techniques, such as by flattening spheres or the caps method, are also eliminated. The simplified method presented in the manuscript is based on the porous medium method. Preliminary research has shown that the porous medium method needs modifications. This is because of channeling, wall effects, and local backflows, which are substantial factors in reactors with small values of tube-to-particle-diameter ratio. The anisotropic thermal conductivity coefficient was introduced to properly reproduce heat transfer in t... [more]
Increasing Efficiency of a Finned Heat Sink Using Orthogonal Analysis
Bin Li, Zheng Cui, Qun Cao, Wei Shao.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat sink, numerical simulation, orthogonal analysis method.
As the heat flux of electronic components is increasing rapidly, the traditional air-cooling technique is gradually not meeting the requirements of thermal management. The immersion liquid-cooling technique shows great potential, and has attracted increasing attention due to its excellent performance in recent years. The finned heat sink is common and essential for cooling electric components. To analyze the influences of its structural parameters on heat dissipation and improve its efficiency while using a dielectric coolant, this study used the orthogonal analysis method to obtain the optimal structure via the numerical simulation method. The maximum temperature of the heat sink was selected as the evaluation criteria. The results showed that the parameters that affect the maximum temperature, in order of importance, are fin thickness, the number of fins, the height of the fins, and substrate thickness. Finally, taking the maximum temperature and mass as indexes obtained the optimal... [more]
Decentralised Electricity Markets and Proactive Customer Behaviour
Jens Maiwald, Tino Schuette.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agent based modelling, cellular approach, regional energy markets.
The energy transition in Germany takes part in decentral structures. With the ongoing integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) into the electricity supply system, supply-side is therefore becoming increasingly decentral and volatile due to the specific generation characteristics. A rather inflexible demand-side, on the other hand, increases the effort to gain the necessary equilibrium between generation and consumption. This paper discusses how consumer behaviour can be influenced by real-time pricing to align demand with generation. Therefore, a combination of two different approaches is used, (I) The Cellular Approach (CA) and (II) Agent Based Modelling (ABM). A model is set up considering a regional energy market, where regional electricity products can be traded peer-to-peer regarding each consumer’s preferences. The observation is made for a whole distribution grid including all types of consumers. The investigations show that energy purchases can be stimulated individually b... [more]

Keywords: digital twin, distributed energy resources, distribution system, Particle Swarm Optimization, photovoltaics, power hardware-in-the-loop, state estimation, voltage regulation.
Real-time state estimation using a digital twin can overcome the lack of in-field measurements inside an electric feeder to optimize grid services provided by distributed energy resources (DERs). Optimal reactive power control of DERs can be used to mitigate distribution system voltage violations caused by increased penetrations of photovoltaic (PV) systems. In this work, a new technology called the Programmable Distribution Resource Open Management Optimization System (ProDROMOS) issued optimized DER reactive power setpoints based-on results from a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm wrapped around OpenDSS time-series feeder simulations. This paper demonstrates the use of the ProDROMOS in a RT simulated environment using a power hardware-in-the-loop PV inverter and in a field demonstration, using a 678 kW PV system in Grafton (MA, USA). The primary contribution of the work is demonstrating a RT digital twin effectively provides state estimation pseudo-measurements that can be... [more]

Pietro Stabile, Federico Ballo, Gianpiero Mastinu, Massimiliano Gobbi.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicles, lightweight design, multiphysics modelling.
A detailed analysis of the power demand of an ultraefficient lightweight-battery electric vehicle is performed. The aim is to overcome the problem of lightweight electric vehicles that may have a relatively bad environmental impact if their power demand is not extremely reduced. In particular, electric vehicles have a higher environmental impact during the production phase, which should be balanced by a lower impact during the service life by means of a lightweight design. As an example of an ultraefficient electric vehicle, a prototype for the Shell Eco-marathon competition is considered. A “tank-to-wheel” multiphysics model (thermo-electro-mechanical) of the vehicle was developed in “Matlab-Simscape”. The model includes the battery, the DC motors, the motor controller and the vehicle drag forces. A preliminary model validation was performed by considering experimental data acquisitions completed during the 2019 Shell Eco-marathon European competition at the Brooklands Circuit (UK). N... Keywords: closed-loop control, Computational Fluid Dynamics, DualSPHysics, numerical modelling, point absorber, smoothed particles hydrodynamics, wave energy converter.
The present work addresses the need for an efficient, versatile, accurate and open-source numerical tool to be used during the design stage of wave energy converters (WECs). The device considered here is the heaving point-absorber developed and tested by Sandia National Laboratories. The smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method, as implemented in DualSPHysics, is proposed since its meshless approach presents some important advantages when simulating floating devices. The dynamics of the power take-off system are also modelled by coupling DualSPHysics with the multi-physics library Project Chrono. A satisfactory matching between experimental and numerical results is obtained for: (i) the heave response of the device when forced via its actuator; (ii) the vertical forces acting on the fixed device under regular waves and; (iii) the heave response of the WEC under the action of both regular waves and the actuator force. This proves the ability of the numerical approach proposed to sim... [more]
Aerodynamic Analysis of a Wind-Turbine Rotor Affected by Pitch Unbalance
Francesco Castellani, Abdelgalil Eltayesh, Matteo Becchetti, Antonio Segalini.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, pitch imbalance, rotor aerodynamics, wind-tunnel test.
The aerodynamics of a rotor with pitch imbalance has been investigated experimentally and numerically in the present work. The comparison of mean velocity and turbulence intensity in the balanced and unbalanced cases indicated that a pitch imbalance modifies both the mean velocity and the turbulent activity; the latter is weakly increased by the imbalance. Spectral analysis indicated that the dynamics of the wake is also affected by the pitch imbalance since the tip vortices loose strength and disorganise more quickly than in the balanced case. The pitch imbalance has, however, a detrimental effect on the power coefficient and it affects the thrust coefficient as well. Only the blade affected by the imbalance shows significant modifications of the applied load, while the other blades operate with the same loading conditions.
Energy Performance Optimization of a House with Grid-Connected Rooftop PV Installation and Air Source Heat Pump
George Stamatellos, Olympia Zogou, Anastassios Stamatelos.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building energy simulation, electricity consumption, heat pumps, PV panels, system optimization, system sizing.
The use of air source heat pump systems for space heating and cooling is a convenient retrofitting strategy for reducing building energy costs. This can be combined with the rooftop installation of photovoltaic panels, which can cover, to a significant degree—or even significantly exceed the building’s electricity needs, moving towards the zero energy building concept. Alternatively, increased capacity for rooftop photovoltaic (PV) installation may support the ongoing process of transforming the Greek power system away from the reliance on fossil fuels to potentially become one of the leaders of the energy transition in Europe by 2030. Standard building energy simulation tools allow good assessment of the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and PV systems’ interactions in transient operation. Further, their use enables the rational sizing and selection of the type of panels type for the rooftop PV installation to maximize the return on investment. The annual performance of... [more]
CFD Analysis of Turbulent Flow of Power-Law Fluid in a Partially Blocked Eccentric Annulus
Ravi Singh, Ramadan Ahmed, Hamidreza Karami, Mustafa Nasser, Ibnelwaleed Hussein.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: annular flow, bed shear stress, Computational Fluid Dynamics, turbulent flow, velocity profile.
This study focuses on analyzing the turbulent flow of drilling fluid in inclined wells using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique. The analysis is performed considering an annulus with a fixed eccentricity of 90% and varying fluid properties, diameter ratio, and bed thickness to examine velocity profile, pressure loss, and overall wall and average bed shear stresses. CFD simulation results are compared with existing data for validation. The pressure loss predicted with CFD agrees with the data. After verification, predictions are used to establish a correlation that can be applied to compute bed shear stress. The established correlation mostly displays a discrepancy of up to 10% when compared with simulation data. The correlation can be used to optimize hole cleaning and manage downhole pressure.

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbonates, electric double layer, low-salinity water flood, Potential Determining Ions, reservoir simulation, zeta potential.
The presence of principal ions in the water injected is essential for enhanced oil recovery by formation of water-wet state in carbonates. This study reaffirms this and presents an evaluation of the positive influence of both divalent as wells as monovalent ions on wettability alteration mechanisms during low salinity waterflooding using brines of varying ionic composition, referred to as “smart brines”. Zeta potentiometric analysis and reservoir simulation studies were conducted with diluted and smart brines that were prepared by varying the composition of principal ions. Surface charge of oil-saturated whole core samples of rock in the presence of various diluted and smart brines was estimated by zeta potential measurements. A comprehensive analysis of zeta potentiometric and reservoir simulation studies was done to establish and investigate the linkage between the recovery mechanism and the incremental recovery achieved. It is noted that zeta potential increases with the increasing... [more]
Gas Hydrate System Offshore Chile

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Chilean margin, gas hydrate, hazard, porosity, slope.
In recent decades, the Chilean margin has been extensively investigated to better characterize the complex geological setting through the geophysical data. The analysis of seismic lines allowed us to identify the occurrence of gas hydrates and free gas in many places along the margin and the change of the pore fluid due to the potential hydrate dissociation. The porosity reduction due to the hydrate presence is linked to the slope to identify the area more sensitive in case of natural phenomena or induced by human activities that could determine gas hydrate dissociations and/or leakage of the free gas trapped below the gas-hydrate stability zone. Clearly, the gas hydrate reservoir could be a strategic energy reserve for Chile. The steady-state modelling pointed out that the climate change could determine gas hydrate dissociation, triggering slope failure. This hypothesis is supported by the presence of high concentrations of gas hydrate in correspondence of important seafloor slope. Th... [more]
Towards Modeling Partial Discharge Phenomena and Propagation in Power Networks Using the Transmission-Line Matrix Method
Antonella Ragusa, Hugh Sasse, Alistair Duffy.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electromagnetic interference, partial discharge, power cables, transmission line matrix modeling.
Partial discharge (PD), where high field strengths on power cables cause charge build up and discharge within a dielectric at sites of imperfections or inhomogeneities, can lead to noise issues and potential failure of the dielectric. This paper presents the first stage of a research activity that aims to develop a transmission-line matrix (TLM)-based simulation “workbench” useful to investigate PD events in a transmission line. The proposed approach allows the predicting of the electromagnetic disturbances generated by the PD event, and the analysis of external field coupling, such as from intentional electromagnetic interference or lightning, which can add to the field stresses. The paper is focused on defining the right modeling method to simulate PD phenomena in a transmission line context. The best approach to integrate the PD model with the model of the transmission line, useful to describe the propagation of the conducted and radiated emissions produced by PD, is analyzed. A fir... An Improved Analytical Model for Crosstalk of SiC MOSFET in a Bridge-Arm Configuration
Dakang Yuan, Yiming Zhang, Xuhong Wang.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytical model, bridge-arm, crosstalk, SiC MOSFETs.
SiC MOSFETs have an excellent characteristic of high switching speed, which can improve the efficiency and power density of converters significantly. However, the fast switching processes of SiC MOSFETs cause serious crosstalk problems in bridge-arm configurations, which restricts the devices’ performances. This paper presents a detailed and accurate improved crosstalk analytical model, which takes into account the nonlinear capacitances, the parasitic inductances, the reverse recovery characteristics of the anti-parallel diodes, and the nonlinear voltage switching and damping oscillation process. The novelty of the proposed model lies in the fact that under the condition of comprehensively considering all these non-ideal factors of the bridge-arm, the effects of multi-parasitic elements and multi-variables coupling to the crosstalk are hierarchically divided. The parasitic elements and their correlations are described in detail and the direct and indirect variables’ impacts are clearl... [more]
Humidity Distribution in High-Occupancy Indoor Micro-Climates
Matthew Bonello, Daniel Micallef, Simon Paul Borg.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD analysis, high occupancy, humidity distribution, internal micro-climate, spatio-temporal distribution.
The general consensus among academics is that the spatio-temporal humidity distribution is more or less uniform in an indoor space. This has, for the large part, not yet been proven by an academic study; subsequently, this paper aims to demonstrate that this is not always true. The paper makes use of a validated transient CFD model, which uses the Low Reynolds Number k-ϵ turbulence model. The model simulates people in a room at a constant skin temperature and emitting a constant source of humidity using source terms in the species equation. The model is eventually used to predict the implications of having a high source of humidity, in the form of occupancy, on the micro-climate’s spatio-temporal humidity distribution. The results for the high-occupancy case show that different locations experience various amounts of humid air, with a 31% difference between the lowest and highest locations. The amount of water vapor in each person’s proximity is deemed to be highly dependent on the flo... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: MMC-HVDC, protection, transient component, wavelet entropy.
Recent technological developments in modular multilevel converter-based high-voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) transmission systems have shown significant advantages over the traditional HVDC and two-level voltage source converter (VSC) transmission systems. However, there are a lack of studies on the protection methods for MMC-HVDC overhead lines where the protection method should be able to provide a fast and accurate response and be able to identify lightning strikes. In this paper, a wavelet entropy-based protection method is proposed. Due to the capability of revealing time−frequency distribution features, the proposed protection method combines wavelet and entropy to identify the time−frequency characteristics of different faults. Simulation results show that the proposed method can accurately and quickly determine the types of faults or disturbances with appropriate noise tolerance. In addition, the impact of the ground resistor and fault distance on the performance of the propo... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, marine renewable energy, variable pitch, Vertical Axis Tidal Turbine (VATT).
Vertical axis turbines, also called Darrieus turbines, present interesting characteristics for offshore wind and tidal applications but suffer from vibrations and a lower efficiency than the more conventional horizontal axis turbines. The use of variable pitch, in order to control the angle of attack of the blades continuously during their rotation, is considered in this study to overcome these problems. 2D blade-resolved unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) simulations are employed to evaluate the performance improvement that pitching blades can bring to the optimal performance of a three-straight-blade vertical axis tidal turbine. Three pitching laws are defined and tested. They aim to reduce the angle of attack of the blades in the upstream half of the turbine. No pitching motion is used in the downstream half. The streamwise velocity, monitored at the center of the turbine, together with the measurement of the blades’ angle of attack help show the effectiveness of the pr... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic analysis, finite element simulation, in situ testing, mine shaft, shaft steelwork, steel structure, underground construction, vertical transport.
A mine shaft steelwork is a three-dimensional frame that directs the vertical motion of conveyances in mine shafts. Here, we conduct field and numerical investigations on the stiffness and dynamic properties of these structures. Based on the design documentation of the shaft, materials data, and site inspection, the steelwork’s finite element model, featuring material and geometric non-linearities, was developed in Abaqus. Static load tests of steelwork were carried out in an underground mine shaft. Numerical simulations reflecting the load test conditions showed strong agreement with the in situ measurements. The validated numerical model was used to assess the dynamic characteristics of the structure. Dynamic linear and non-linear analyses delivered the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and structural response to dynamic loads. The current practices and regulations regarding shaft steelwork design and maintenance do not account for the stiffness of guide-to-bunton connections and dis... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ammonia, CH4/NH3 flame, NH3 combustion process, NO emission modelling, reactor network, swirl flames.
This paper details the experimental and numerical analysis of a combustion process for atmospheric swirl burners using methane with added ammonia as fuel. The research was carried out for lean methane−air mixtures, which were doped with ammonia up to 5% and preheated up to 473 K. A flow with internal recirculation was induced by burners with different outflow angles from swirling blades, 30° and 50°, where tested equivalence ratio was 0.71. The NO and CO distribution profiles on specified axial positions of the combustor and the overall emission levels at the combustor outlet were measured and compared to a modelled outcome. The highest values of the NO emissions were collected for 5% NH3 and 50° (1950 ppmv), while a reduction to 1585 ppmv was observed at 30°. The doubling of the firing rates from 15 kW up to 30 kW did not have any great influence on the overall emissions. The emission trend lines were not proportional to the raising share of the ammonia in the fuel. 3D numerical tests... [more]
