Power Plant Cycles: Evolution towards More Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Technologies

The scarcity of energy and water resources and rising temperatures due to climate change has set the focus on improving the energy efficiency of power plant thermodynamic cycles to adapt to higher heat sink temperatures and use fewer resources for energy production. In this work, a review of power production thermodynamic cycles is presented: from Brayton to Rankine and combined cycles, alongside particular cycles such as Organic Rankine Cycles, Kalina, Goswami or the more recently developed Hygroscopic Cycle. The efficiency of these cycles and their possible improvements are considered, as well as their environmental impact. Costs associated with existing power plants found in the literature have also been included in the study. The main existing facilities for each cycle type are assessed, and the most sustainable options in terms of resource consumption (fuel, water, etc.) and future perspectives to ensure both their energy efficiency and sustainability are identified.

Significance and Challenges of Poultry Litter and Cattle Manure as Sustainable Fuels: A Review

Growing animal production results in a significant amount of waste, composed of manure, bedding, feed, feathers, etc., whose safe and cost-effective disposal becomes a troublesome challenge. The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge is one of the most important and critical issues of wastewater treatment plants. One option for sludge liquidation is the production of fuel in the form of pellets from mixed sewage and paper mill sludge. This study presents the results of the combustion of pelletized fuels, namely sewage and paper mill sludge, and their 2:1 and 4:1 blends in a fluidized bed combustor. The flue gas was analysed after reaching a steady state at bed temperatures of 700−800 °C. Commonly used flue gas cleaning is still necessary, especially for SO2; therefore, it is worth mentioning that the addition of paper mill sludge reduced the mercury concentration in the flue gas to limits acceptable in most EU countries. In 2019, Chile generated 20 million tons of waste, 79% of which was not properly disposed of, thereby providing an attractive opportunity for energy generation in advanced thermochemical conversion processes. This study presents a techno-economic and environmental assessment of the implementation of Waste-Integrated Gasifier-Gas Turbine Combined Cycle (WIG-GTCC) technology as an alternative for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) treatment. The studied case assesses the conversion of 14.61 t·h−1 of MSW, which produces a combustible gas with a flow rate of 34.2 t·h−1 and LHV of 5900 kJ·kg−1, which, in turn, is used in a combined cycle to generate 19.58 MW of electrical power. The Biogas Potential of Oxytree Leaves

This article describes the characteristics of th Oxytree (Paulownia) plant, both in terms of its impact on GHG emissions and its potential use to produce biofuel, i.e., biogas. The described research involved the physico-chemical and elemental analysis of the Oxytree leaf composition and its biogas efficiency depending on the harvesting method. Three different scenarios were considered: the freshest possible leaves—processed immediately after stripping from the living tree; after the first day of collection from pruned or harvested wood; after the first week of collection from pruned or harvested wood. The best results were achieved for the harvest of the freshest leaves—on average 430 m3/Mg (biogas) and 223 m3/Mg (methane) per dry organic mass. Improving the Efficiency of Environmental Temperature Control in Homes and Buildings

This research developed an effective environmental temperature control system for homes and buildings. The study used a photovoltaic panel (PV) and developed a solar installation with thermosiphon circulation, which has a flat solar collector and heat-insulating translucent glass with double glazing with reduced pressure. The coolant is made of thin-walled corrugated stainless pipe. The heat from the solar flux heats the liquid removed from the collector, and cold water from the siphon enters its place. A method for evaluating the dominant seepage channel (DSC) water flooding in a layered sandstone reservoir is proposed and applied in an oilfield based on the water-cut derivative. The water-cut derivative curve of the reservoir with DSC shows double peaks. Therefore, based on the analysis of geology and production characteristics, the evaluation method of DSC is established. The evaluation index is proposed to quantitatively characterize the development degree of DSC and determine its distribution in a water-flooding reservoir. The test data validate that the proposed method can not only accurately determine the DSC and quantitatively evaluate its development degree, but also show its dynamic change. The Electricity Generation Dispatch in Mexico: An Uncertain Road towards Sustainability

A comprehensive assessment was conducted for the electricity dispatch in the Mexican National Interconnected System for the 2017−2021 period, as well as the projected period of 2022−2030, with special attention on emissions and the transition to clean energy. The reported official generation data for the 2017−2021 period were compared to the results of both one- and multi-node dispatch modeling. The officially reported generation mix was found to be sub-optimal in terms of costs and emissions. A small part of the differences can be traced back to transmission constraints. Pollution of water by plastic contaminants has received increasing attention, owing to its negative effects on ecosystems. Small plastic particles propagate in water and can travel long distances from the source of pollution. In order to research the settling motion of particles in water flow, a small-scale experiment was conducted, whereby spherical plastic particles of varying diameters were released in an open-channel flow. Three approaches were investigated to numerically simulate the motion of particles. The numerical simulation results were compared and validated with experimental data. This paper reports on a review on combined heat and power (CHP). A historical examination points out that combined heat and power was primarily used for hot heat valorizing (CHHP). Peer-to-Peer Trading for Energy-Saving Based on Reinforcement Learning

This paper proposes a new peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading method between energy sellers and consumers in a community based on multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL). Each user of the community is treated as a smart agent who can choose the amount and the price of the electric energy to sell/buy. There are two aspects we need to examine: the profits for the individual user and the utility for the community. For a single user, we consider that they want to realise both a comfortable living environment to enhance happiness and satisfaction by adjusting usage loads and certain economic benefits by selling the surplus electric energy. Taking the whole community into account, we care about the balance between energy sellers and consumers so that the surplus electric energy can be locally absorbed and consumed within the community.
