Nai Hao, Yongliang Wang, Xiaochong Wu, Yifeng Duan, Panshun Li, Manchao He
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: experimental monitoring, rock mechanics, sandstone, time-dependent effect, water absorption
Rock mass has typical pore structure, and the induced coupling effects of fluid and solid matrix appear in the disaster evolution process of deep energy exploitation and overground rock hydration. As a representative case, influenced by the water absorption environment, the surrounding rock and murals of Mogao Grottoes produce hydration diseases, which may be related to unclear interaction mechanisms between the surrounding rock and water. In this study, the self-developed physical experimental system for real-time experimental monitoring was applied to test the water absorption evolution behaviors of sandstone. The experimental results showed that the water evaporation of the rock sample during the process of water absorption could be measured through this well-designed physical experimental system, and the actual water absorption of the rock sample is the difference between the decrease of water in the water storage bucket, measured by the balance and the water evaporation in the pro... Subject: Environment
Keywords: alternative refrigerants, computational tool, environmental impact, HFCs, objective function, Sustainability, sustainable refrigerants
There have been consequences regarding the increment of the greenhouse effect, such as the rise in the planet’s global temperature, and climate change. Refrigerants have an important contribution to the aforementioned environmental impact. In particular, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) contribute to the destruction of the ozone layer and the increase of the greenhouse effect. Protocols, international agreements, and legislation were developed to slow down the emission of greenhouse gases. Prohibition and definition of deadlines for the gradual elimination of various refrigerants have been proposed to replace them with others that are environmentally sustainable. Soon, the refrigeration sector will have to replace some refrigerants with others that are alternative and/or sustainable with minimal or zero environmental impact. A computational tool to support decision-making regarding the selection of alternative and/or sustainable refrigerant to replace the old one is developed to be used by re... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: ecological footprint, energy consumption, environment patents, environmental regulations, trade
The environmental regulations−ecological footprint nexus is occupying an important space in the current debate of energy economics. As a counter measure to environmental degradation, implementing environmental regulations remains on the agenda of scholars and policymakers alike, but whether these regulations have a reducing impact on the ecological footprint remains open since the literature on the topic, and empirical evidence, remains fragmented and dissimilar. The current approach aimed to investigate this for five member countries of the Union for the Mediterranean with panel data econometric techniques. Panel data from France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Türkiye were considered for 1992−2015 and were tested for cross-sectional dependence, unit roots, and cointegration. Panel fixed effect regression estimations were conducted, also with Newey-West and Driscoll-Kraay standard errors. In addition, a country-level analysis was conducted by using fully modified ordinary least squares e... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cogeneration, energy transformation, LCA, renewable, review
Technologies that use renewable energy sources (RES) are crucial to achieving decarbonization goals, but a significant number of studies show their relatively high environmental impact during the production phase. Therefore, technologies need to be compared in terms of their life-cycle environmental impact. The life cycle analysis (LCA) methodology is well known and widely employed. However, problems related to the methodological choices prevent taking full advantage of the LCA, as the results of numerous studies are often incomparable. The presented review aims to critically compare the impact of different energy generation technologies—RES (as well as non-RES) energy generators and co-generators. The numeric results are structured and analyzed in terms of the global warming potential (GWP) and non-RES primary energy consumption. The results show that RES technologies are superior compared to conventional fossil-fuel-based systems in most cases, and the high impact during the producti... [more]

Keywords: ASP flooding, chemical flooding, emulsions, enhance oil recovery, seepage mechanisms
Chemical flooding plays an important role in enhancing oil recovery due to many reasons, including the viscosity-increment effect of polymer, wettability alteration effect of surfactant, and the formation of emulsions, which have been known to effectively increase the swept area and oil displacement efficiency, hence increasing heavy oil recovery. Laboratory tests and pilot trials of alkali−surfactant−polymer (ASP) injection show that the oil recovery of the emulsified system is 5% more than the cases where no emulsions existed. Therefore, it is of great significance to study heavy oil emulsions and its field application for enhanced heavy oil recovery. This paper discusses a thorough overview of the most fundamental ASP flooding mechanisms, along with some examples of laboratory experiments and field trials. In addition, the formation conditions and the interfacial characteristics of heavy oil emulsions are also discussed, mainly ASP flooding, and then the seepage mechanisms of these... [more]

To date, hundreds of millions tons of plastics has been produced worldwide. Their production and disposal are associated with high pollution and carbon release into the atmosphere. A more environmentally friendly alternative is bioplastics, and the most popular is polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) polymer. Large amounts of PHB can be obtained from activated sludge where used cooking oil or other industrial waste can be used as potential substrates. In this work, efficient bioplastic production strategies are studied, and the considered substrate is a mixture of oil and peptone. Pseudomonas fluorescens bacteria are used to accumulate PHB, and the cultivation of microorganisms is carried out in batch and continuous-flow bioreactors. Microscopic observations and laboratory essays are performed to confirm presence of PHB and other key parameters. The obtained results allow us to determine the optimal feeding strategy.
