Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Sewage Sludge and Trade Wastes: Beneficial and Inhibitory Effects of Individual Constituents
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biogas, counter-ions, inhibition, kinetics, methane, salts
Anaerobic digestion (AD) of sewage sludge can be optimised by adding trade wastes (TWs) because of their nutrient content and boost in biogas formation if non-inhibitory. However, some components in TWs might have an inhibitory impact, such as nitrogen compounds, sulphate, heavy metals, metalloids, halogens and organic pollutants (e.g., phenol). This study aimed to understand the impact of TWs on the co-digestion with sewage sludge to identify appropriate TW loads for sustainable AD operation. The composition of 160 TWs was evaluated and the constituents with potential to cause inhibition or toxicity were tested in bio-methane potential (BMP) tests. The compounds studied in BMP tests included ammonia, zinc, copper, aluminium, mercury, arsenic, chloride, sulphate and nitrate. An improvement was observed at concentrations 2−746 mg Zn/L, 1066−2821 mg Cl/L as zinc sulphate and sodium chloride in biogas production, and 2−746 mg Zn/L, 162 mg SO4/L, 25 mg Hg/L as zinc sulphate, sodium chlorid... A Review on Rotary Generators of Hydrodynamic Cavitation for Wastewater Treatment and Enhancement of Anaerobic Digestion Process
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biomethane, hydrodynamic cavitation, rotary generator of hydrodynamic cavitation, waste activated sludge, wastewater treatment
The issue of ever-increasing amounts of waste activated sludge (WAS) produced from biological wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is pointed out. WAS can be effectively reduced in the anaerobic digestion (AD) process, where methanogens break down organic matter and simultaneously produce biogas in the absence of oxygen, mainly methane and CO2. Biomethane can then be effectively used in gas turbines to produce electricity and power a part of WWTPs. Hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) has been identified as a potential technique that can improve the AD process and enhance biogas yield. Rotary generators of hydrodynamic cavitation (RGHCs) that have gained considerable popularity due to their promising results and scalability are presented. Operation, their underlying mechanisms, parameters for performance evaluation, and their division based on geometry of cavitation generation units (CGUs) are presented. Their current use in the field of wastewater treatment is presented, with the focus on WAS... [more]

Multi-Sensor Data Fusion for Real-Time Multi-Object Tracking
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: autonomous vehicle, environmental perception, object tracking, roadside units, sensor fusion, unscented Kalman filter
Sensor data fusion is essential for environmental perception within smart traffic applications. By using multiple sensors cooperatively, the accuracy and probability of the perception are increased, which is crucial for critical traffic scenarios or under bad weather conditions. In this paper, a modular real-time capable multi-sensor fusion framework is presented and tested to fuse data on the object list level from distributed automotive sensors (cameras, radar, and LiDAR). The modular multi-sensor fusion architecture receives an object list (untracked objects) from each sensor. The fusion framework combines classical data fusion algorithms, as it contains a coordinate transformation module, an object association module (Hungarian algorithm), an object tracking module (unscented Kalman filter), and a movement compensation module. Due to the modular design, the fusion framework is adaptable and does not rely on the number of sensors or their types. Moreover, the method continues to ope... [more]

Pressure Relief-Type Overpressure Distribution Prediction Model Based on Seepage and Stress Coupling
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: overpressure, pressure relief, seepage
At present, great progress has been made in the prediction of undercompaction and fluid expansion overpressure. However, in recent years, the field has frequently encountered pressure relief-type overpressure. Different from primary overpressure, such as undercompaction and fluid expansion, this type of overpressure belongs to secondary overpressure, which has a certain concealment in response to seismic velocity and logging data. Based on this, a geological analysis model of pressure relief-type overpressure was established according to the seepage and stress coupling theory. The model can realize the prediction of pressure relief range and pressure distribution, which provides a new way to predict this kind of overpressure. The influence of the laws of porosity, permeability, and geological movement on pressure relief were analyzed. The research results provide a new method for the prediction of pressure relief-type overpressure and improving the basic guarantee of safe and efficient... [more]

Coupling of Anammox Activity and PAH Biodegradation: Current Insights and Future Directions
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: anammox, bioremediation, DNRA, nitrogen, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has shown success in past years for the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater containing inorganic nutrients (i.e., nitrogen). However, the increase in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated matrices calls for new strategies for efficient and environmentally sustainable remediation. Therefore, the present review examined the literature on the connection between the anammox process and PAHs using VOSviewer to shed light on the mechanisms involved during PAH biodegradation and the key factors affecting anammox bacteria. The scientific literature thoroughly discussed here shows that PAHs can be involved in nitrogen removal by acting as electron donors, and their presence does not adversely affect the anammox bacteria. Anammox activity can be improved by regulating the operating parameters (e.g., organic load, dissolved oxygen, carbon-to-nitrogen ratio) and external supplementation (i.e., calcium nitrate) that promote changes in... Removal of the Pigment Congo Red from Synthetic Wastewater with a Novel and Inexpensive Adsorbent Generated from Powdered Foeniculum Vulgare Seeds
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Congo red, dynamics, Foeniculum vulgare seed, isotherms, thermodynamics, uptake
In this research, powdered Foeniculum vulgare seed (FVSP) was treated separately with H2C2O4, ZnCl2, and a mixture of ZnCl2-CuS. The characteristics of the treated and untreated FVSP samples, as well as their abilities to eliminate Congo red (CR) from solutions, were investigated. The influences of the empirical circumstances on CR adsorption by the ideal adsorbent were studied. The thermodynamic, isothermal, and dynamic constants of this adsorption were also inspected. The ideal adsorbent was found to be the FVSP sample treated with a ZnCl2-CuS mixture, which eliminated 96.80% of the CR dye. The empirical outcomes proved that this adsorption was significantly affected by the empirical circumstances, and the second-order dynamic model as well as the Langmuir isotherm model fit the empirical data better than the first-order model and the Freundlich model. The values of Ea (15.3 kJ/mol) and ∆Ho (32.767 kJ/mol ≤ ∆Ho ≤ 35.495 kJ/mol) evidence that CR anions were endothermally adsorbed on Z... [more]

Crude Oil Bioremediation: From Bacteria to Microalgae
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: bioremediation, crude oil, environmental pollution, hydrocarbons, microalgae, Petroleum
Crude oil is one of the major pollutants present. Its extraction and processing generate processing waters contaminated by hydrocarbons which are harmful to both human health and the flora and fauna that come into contact with it. Hydrocarbon contamination can involve soil and water, and several technologies are used for recovery. The most used techniques for the recovery of spilt oil involve chemical-physical methods that can remove most of the pollutants. Among these, must consider the bioremediation by microorganisms, mostly bacterial capable of degrading many of the toxic compounds contained within the petroleum. Microalgae participate in bioremediation indirectly, supporting the growth of degrading bacteria, and directly acting on contaminants. Their direct contribution is based on the activation of various mechanisms ranging from the production of enzymes capable of degrading hydrocarbons, such as lipoxygenases, to the attack through the liberation of free radicals. Keywords: chemical precipitation, circular economy, lithium, lithium recovery
Lithium is a vital raw material used for a wide range of applications, such as the fabrication of glass, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, and batteries for electric cars. The accelerating electrification transition and the global commitment to decarbonization have caused an increasing demand for lithium. The current supply derived from brines and hard rock ores is not enough to meet the global demand unless alternate resources and efficient techniques to recover this valuable metal are implemented. In the past few decades, several approaches have been studied to extract lithium from aqueous resources. Among those studied, chemical precipitation is considered the most efficient technology for the extraction of metals from wastewater. This paper outlines the current technology, its challenges, and its environmental impacts. Moreover, it reviews alternative approaches to recover lithium via chemical precipitation, and systematically studies the effects of different operating conditions on the l... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: alkali etching, chinese medicine industry waste, hydrothermal carbonization, multi-pollutant adsorbent, treating waste with waste
The annual discharge (6−7 million tons per year) of Chinese medicine industry waste (CMIW) is large and harmful. CMIW with a high moisture content can be effectively treated by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) technology. Compared with CMIW, the volume and number of pores of the prepared hydrochar increased significantly after alkali etching (AE), and they had abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. These properties provide physical and chemical adsorption sites, improving the adsorbent activity of the alkaline etching of Chinese medicine industry waste hydrochar (AE-CMIW hydrochar). However, few studies have investigated the adsorption of organic dyes and heavy metals in mixed solutions. This study proposed a method of coupling HTC with AE to treat CMIW and explored the potential of AE-CMIW hydrochar to remove metal ions and organic dyes from mixed solution. We analyzed the removal rates of metal ions and organic dyes by the adsorbents and investigated their differences. The res... [more]

Effect of Environmental Conditions on Strontium Adsorption by Red Soil Colloids in Southern China
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Adsorption, China, soil colloid, strontium (Sr2+)
The fate of radionuclides in the environment is attracting increased attention. The effect of various environmental effects on the adsorption behavior of the strontium ion (Sr2+) by red soil colloids in Southern China was studied by a series of batch experiments, and the adsorption mechanism was briefly investigated as well. With the increase in the solid−liquid ratio and the concentration of Sr2+, the adsorption efficiency increased gradually. The effect of pH and ionic strength on adsorption was strong, while temperature had little effect. The adsorption data fitted to the Langmuir model indicates that the process is monolayered and homogeneous. The thermodynamic parameters also show that the adsorption of Sr2+ on red soil colloids is a spontaneous and exothermic process. The aim of this work is to gain insight into the role of red soil colloids on the fate of radionuclides in the field.

Uncovering the value of waste materials is one of the keys to sustainability. In this current work, valorization of chitosan was pursued to fabricate a novel modified chitosan functional hydrogel using a process-efficient protocol. The fabrication proceeds by a one-pot and single-step C-Mannich condensation of chitosan (3% w/v), glutaraldehyde (20 eq.), and 4-hydroxycoumarin (40 eq.) at 22 °C in 3% v/v acetic acid. The Mannich base modified chitosan hydrogel (CS-MB) exhibits a dual-responsive swelling behavior in response to pH and temperature that has not been observed in any other hydrogel systems. Combining the pre-defined optimal swelling pH (pH = 4) and temperature (T = 22 °C), the CS-MB was screened for its Cu2+ adsorption capacity at this condition. The CS-MB achieved an optimal adsorption capacity of 12.0 mg/g with 1.2 g/L adsorbent dosage after 36 h with agitation. Keywords: artificial neural network (ANN), dynamic programming (DP), equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS), greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), power management strategy
Many researchers spent much effort on the online power management strategies for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Nowadays, artificial neural networks (ANNs), one of the machine learning techniques, have also been applied to this problem due to their good performance in learning non-linear and complicated multi-inputs multi-outputs (MIMO) dynamic systems. In this paper, an ANN is applied to the online power management for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) by predicting the torque split between an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor (e-Motor) to optimize the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by using dynamic programming (DP) results as training data. Dynamic programming can achieve a global minimum solution while it is computationally intensive and requires prior knowledge of the entire drive cycle. As such, this method cannot be implemented in real-time. The DP-based ANN controller can get the benefit of using an ANN to fit the... [more]
