Experimental and Mechanistic Study of Synergistic Removal of Hg by Evaporation from Desulfurization Wastewater
Bin Hu, Cong Chen, Yang Yi, Shouxi Jiang, Xiaosong Liu
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: catalytic oxidation, collaborative removal, evaporation of desulfurization wastewater, mercury
The flue evaporation of desulfurization wastewater can solve the problem that it is difficult to remove some heavy metal ions and chloride ions by conventional methods. A large amount of chloride ions in desulfurization wastewater can also promote the catalytic oxidation removal of Hg in the flue gas. The migration character of chloride ions in the flue evaporation process of desulfurization wastewater was studied by using the coal-fired thermal state experimental platform. The concentrations of Hg0 and Hg2+ in the flue gas at the inlet and outlet of selective catalytic reduction denitration (SCR), electrostatic precipitator (ESP), and wet desulfurization (WFGD) devices were tested, and the synergistic removal of traditional pollutant removal equipment by flue evaporation of desulfurization wastewater was analyzed. The influence of Hg and the effect of the evaporation of desulfurization wastewater at different positions on the removal of Hg in the flue gas were compared and analyzed, a... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: CAP, environmental sustainability, regional diversification, rural development
The Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union remains at the top tier of the union’s legacies with the aim of bequeathing a sustainable future for all. Series of actions geared towards reforming the environmental and climate goals of the CAP are constantly being taken. The objective of this paper is to verify if the environmental and climatic CAP measures proposed in Poland’s Strategic Development Plan for Agriculture, for the years 2023−2027, reflect farmers’ preferences regarding the structure of the CAP support. To achieve this goal, we model a hypothetical strategic game involving farmers from different regions. The outcomes of the game were derived from the ex-post analysis of EU funds, in the application for environmental and climatic CAP measures, in addition to the results of simulations of the partial equilibrium model for the agricultural sector (CAPRI). It was found out that farmers from regions with disadvantaged agrarian structures would find it more difficult to co... [more]

Keywords: bioremediation, deep-sea, dispersant application, high-pressure reactor, high-pressure sampler, marine microbes, oil plume degradation
Hydrocarbon biodegradation rates in the deep-sea have been largely determined under atmospheric pressure, which may lead to non-representative results. In this work, we aim to study the response of deep-sea microbial communities of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS) to oil contamination at in situ environmental conditions and provide representative biodegradation rates. Seawater from a 600 to 1000 m depth was collected using a high-pressure (HP) sampling device equipped with a unidirectional check-valve, without depressurization upon retrieval. The sample was then passed into a HP-reactor via a piston pump without pressure disruption and used for a time-series oil biodegradation experiment at plume concentrations, with and without dispersant application, at 10 MPa and 14 °C. The experimental results demonstrated a high capacity of indigenous microbial communities in the deep EMS for alkane degradation regardless of dispersant application (>70%), while PAHs were highly degraded when oi... Coal and organic-rich shale in the Yan’an Formation in the southwestern margin of the Ordos Basin are widely developed, which is an important fact for oil and gas exploration in China that has been widely explored for a long time. In this paper, detailed sequence division and sedimentary environment analyses of the Yan’an Formation in the Pengyang area on the southwestern margin of the Ordos Basin were conducted using field outcrops, drilling cores, logging, wavelet transform and organic geochemistry. The results showed that the succession consists of some units with distinctly different characteristics. Based on the petrographic assemblage and transform wavelet characteristics, the Yan’an Formation in this area can be divided into a long-term cycle, five medium-term cycles, and eleven short-term cycles, among which coal and carbonaceous shale were mainly developed in the short-term cycles I2, III1, III2, V1 and V2. Coal and organic-rich mud shale have been developed in the Yan’an Form... [more]

Keywords: Ce:Nd:YAG, laser efficiency, parabolic mirror, solar-pumped laser
The efficiency potential of a small-size solar-pumped laser is studied here. The solar laser head was composed of a fused silica aspheric lens and a conical pump cavity, which coupled and redistributed the concentrated solar radiation from the focal zone of a parabolic mirror with an effective collection area of 0.293 m2 to end-side pump a Ce (0.1 at%):Nd (1.1 at%):YAG rod of 2.5 mm diameter and 25 mm length. Optimum solar laser design parameters were found through Zemax© non-sequential ray-tracing and LASCAD™ analysis. The utilization of the Ce:Nd:YAG medium with small diameter pumped by a small-scale solar concentrator was essential to significantly enhance the end-side pump solar laser efficiency and thermal performance. For 249 W incoming solar power at an irradiance of 850 W/m2, 11.2 W multimode solar laser power was measured, corresponding to the record solar-to-laser power conversion efficiency of 4.50%, being, to the best of our knowledge, 1.22 times higher than the previous re... Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are a promising technology for reducing the tailpipe emissions of CO2 as well as air pollutants, especially in urban environments. However, several studies raise questions over their after-treatment exhaust efficiency when their internal combustion engine (ICE) ignites. The rationale is the high ICE load during the cold start in combination with the cold conditions of the after-treatment devices. In this study, we measured the solid particle number (SPN) emissions of two Euro 6d and one Euro 6d-TEMP gasoline direct injection (GDI) PHEVs (electric range 52−61 km) all equipped with a gasoline particulate filter, in the laboratory and on-road with different states of charge of the rechargeable electric energy storage system (REESS) and ambient temperatures. All vehicles met the regulation limits but it was observed that, even for fully charged REESS, when the ICE ignited SPN emissions were similar or even higher in some cases compared to the operat... Subject: Environment
Keywords: cargo bikes, environmental impact, sustainable transport, transport modelling
Contemporary cities need new solutions to reduce the harmful impact of freight transport, such as traffic congestion, air pollution, and noise emissions, which have increased in the last few years. This especially concerns central parts of cities due to the architectural features of urban space. The concept of green logistics intends to replace currently used combustion engine vehicles with zero-emissions technologies such as the use of cargo bikes to deliver goods to final recipients located in the city districts with dense urban development. However, the use of cargo bikes for certain architectural, transport, and business conditions must be justified: the positive impact of that innovative means of transport should be evaluated and assessed by decision-makers. We propose a method to evaluate the environmental impact of cargo bikes that replace conventional vehicles in the central district of a city. Our approach assumes simulations of freight travel demand in the selected city area,... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Hebei province, Sustainability, system dynamics model, urban metabolism, water-energy-population nexus
Urban metabolism has emerged over the past decades as an important new paradigm of regional and urban sustainability governance towards a Chinese national scheme of ‘carbon neutrality’ by 2060. Hebei province in China faces twin pressures related to its supply of water and energy resources, which has brought humans and nature into conflict. Overcoming this tension in the human-land relationship in Hebei and determining a suitable development path for the future has become a core issue for the achievement of coordinated development within the Beijing−Tianjin−Hebei region. This paper constructs a system to simulate the metabolism of water, energy, and human relationships, and uses this model to carry out simulations for Hebei province. The model establishes five scenarios: a natural development scenario, economic growth scenario, water conservation development scenario, energy conservation development scenario, and low carbon scenario. The simulation results show that, without interventi... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, forest biomass, forest fires, forest road, lignocellulosic biomass, pine bark, pine branch, pine needles
Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant resource that can be valorized for the production of bioenergy. However, studies aiming to quantify the amount of biogas production potential per km forest road are scarce in the literature. In this study, fresh pine needles, pine needle litter, pine branches, and pine bark were digested in batch reactors under mesophilic conditions after a grinding/milling pre-treatment. All samples were collected from a low-altitude Mediterranean Pinus forest (North Greece) adjacent to a category G forest road with a gentle slope. The methane yield of fresh pine needles was between 115 and 164 NmL g−1 volatile solids (VS), depending on the Pinus tree size. Pine needle litter produced a significantly lower methane yield (between 58 and 77 NmL g−1 VS), followed by pine bark (85 NmL g−1 VS) and pine branches (138 NmL g−1 VS). Considering the quantity of pine needle litter accumulated on adjacent forest roads (600 ± 200 g m−2), it was possible to calculate the biome... [more]

The industry is a key driver of economic development. However, changes caused by introduction of modern technologies, and increasing complexity of products and production, directly affect the industrial enterprises and workers. The critics of the Industry 4.0 paradigm emphasized its orientation to new technologies and digitalization in a technocratic way. Therefore, the new industrial paradigm Industry 5.0 appeared very soon and automatically triggered a debate about the role of, and reasons for applying, the new paradigm. Industry 5.0 is complementing the existing Industry 4.0 paradigm with the orientation to the worker who has an important role in the production process, and that role has been emphasized during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this research, there is a brief discussion on main drivers and enablers for introduction of these new paradigms, then a literature-based analysis is carried out to highlight the differences between two paradigms from three important aspects—people, or... Improving energy efficiency and minimizing environmental concerns through environmental laws and green taxes are regarded as the primary motivating factors of climate change policy. This analysis clarifies the significance of green taxes in lowering energy use and intensity from 1994 to 2020. As part of our contribution to the literature on energy economics, this study examines how green taxes interact with energy intensity and consumption in four Nordic nations. Environmental policies and sustainable development goals (SDGs) are driving new research into the effects of green taxes on energy consumption and intensity. According to the outcomes of fully modified ordinary least square (FMOLS), panel dynamic ordinary least square (PDOLS), and panel quantile regression, a green tax helps to reduce total energy consumption. It increases energy efficiency by motivating governments, companies, and citizens to encourage innovation in environment-related technology. When it comes to creating a... [more]

Keywords: experiment, linear quadratic regulator (LQR), model transformation, nonlinear systems, Pendubot, quasi-velocities, stabilization methods, underactuated systems
This paper considers the issue of linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) design for nonlinear systems with the use of smooth state and input transformations. The proposed design methodology is considered in the stabilisation task of the Pendubot, which is based on the concept of feedback equivalent control systems. It turns out that it is possible to find a controller that ensures comparable dynamics of the closed-loop system in the vicinity of the set point regardless of the state-space representation adopted. In addition, the synthesis of suboptimal controllers according to the LQR strategy ensuring equal dynamics at the equilibrium point is presented. The properties of the studied controllers were investigated in a simulation environment and using experimental tests. The detailed forms of transformations and linear approximations given can be regarded as ready-made procedures that can be applied to stabilise similar mechanical systems in robotics.

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: geometry-based models, multi-bounced scattering, time-varying correlation functions, tunnel wireless communications
In this study, a modified non-stationary geometry-based scattering model for tunnel vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) multiple-input multiple-output Ricean fading channels is presented. The proposed channel introduces non-line-of-sight three-dimensional multi-bounced scattering propagation paths under an assumption of equivalent scattering points to depict the tunnel environments, in which the scatterers are randomly distributed on the semi-cylindrical tunnel wall (i.e., cable racks, jetfans, road signs, lighting facilities). Furthermore, the time-varying channel statistics (i.e., the space and frequency correlation functions) resulting from the relative movement between the mobile transmitter and mobile receiver are analyzed. Finally, numerical results show that the space correlations of the proposed model significantly decrease when the multi-bounced scattering rays are taken into account; moreover, when the velocity and the antenna angle γR increase, the correlations decrease therewith, whic... More than 78 million tons of photovoltaic modules (PVMs) will reach their end of life (EOL) by 2050. If they are not responsibly managed, they can (a) pollute our terrestrial ecosystem, (b) indirectly encourage continuous mining and extraction of Earth’s finite resources, and (c) diminish the net environmental benefit of harvesting solar energy. Conversely, successfully recovering them could reduce resource extraction and waste and generate sufficient economic return and value to finance the production of another 2 billion PVMs by 2050. Therefore, EOL PVMs must participate in the circular economy, and business and political leaders are actively devising strategies to enable their participation. This article aims to facilitate and expedite their efforts by comprehensively reviewing and presenting the latest progress and developments in EOL PVM recovery methods and processes. It also identifies and thoroughly discusses several interrelated observations that impede or accelerate their eff... [more]

Hegang coalfield is one of the areas with abundant coal resources in Heilongjiang Province. Characteristics of minerals and geochemistry of No. 26 coal (lower Cretaceous coals) from Junde mine, Hegang coalfield, Heilongjiang province, China, were reported. The results showed that No. 26 coal of Junde mine is slightly enriched in Cs, Pb, and Zr compared with world coals. The minerals in No. 26 coal of Junde mine primarily include clay minerals and quartz, followed by calcite, siderite, pyrite, monazite, and zircon. The diagrams of Al2O3−TiO2, Zr/Sc−Th/Sc, Al2O3/TiO2−Sr/Y, and Al2O3/TiO2−La/Yb indicate that the enriched elements in No. 26 coal were mainly sourced from the Late Paleozoic meta-igneous rocks in Jiamusi block. The volcanic ash contribution to No. 26 coal seems very low. Sulfate sulfur indicating oxidation/evaporation gradually decreases during No. 26 coal formation.
