Wellbore Temperature and Pressure Calculation of Offshore Gas Well Based on Gas−Liquid Separated Flow Model
Jun Jing, Hongbin Shan, Xiaohua Zhu, Yixiang Huangpu, Yang Tian
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas–liquid two phase flow, HPHT, multiple annulus temperature, separated flow, well pressure, well temperature
Compared with land wells, the production environment and reservoir depth of offshore oil and gas wells are more complex and shallower. Further, HPHT production fluid there will produce strong temperature and pressure disturbance that affects the wellbore, which easily generates wellbore safety problems, such as wellhead growth and leakage caused by the incompatible deformation of casing and cement sheath. Therefore, obtaining an accurate wellbore temperature and pressure field is the key to implementing a wellbore safety assessment. Based on the gas−liquid two-phase separated method, this paper established an improved calculation model of wellbore temperature and pressure field for offshore HPHT wells. This model also takes into account the heat transfer environment characteristics of “formation-seawater-air” and the influence of well structure. Compared with the measured data of the case well, the error of temperature and pressure calculation results of the improved model are only 0.8... [more]

Keywords: acid dew point temperature, air excess coefficients, chimney gas temperature, heat recovery, lignite coal
In this study, flue gas heat recovery potential was determined by using the flue gas measurements from boilers of buildings with solid fuel-fired district and central heating systems in Balikesir, Turkey. Potential flue gas heat recovery potential in terms of energy savings were examined. The potential of heating the preheated water and combustion air supplied to the boiler was analyzed. Thus, the efficiency of the heating system was increased, and energy savings were achieved by providing fuel savings. In order to reduce the flue gas temperature in solid fuel-fired boilers, the acidification temperature, fuel properties and excess air coefficient should be known. Below the acidification temperature, corrosion and other adverse effects may occur in the flue and in the heat exchanger. In this study, acidification temperature and fuel and combustion characteristics of coal were taken into account. Generally, seven types of coal are used for heating purposes in Balikesir province. Thus, f... [more]

Keywords: dual tube heat exchanger, heat transfer, model compound, multi-stage condensers, thermodynamic characteristic
A four-stage condensers in series system was adopted to solve the problems of insufficient condensation of high-temperature pyrolysis steam and difficulty in the classification and recovery of pyrolysis oil, where the internal fluids conducted countercurrent convection heat exchange. A steady-state physical and mathematical model of a single condenser was established to clarify the discipline of heat transfer between the internal fluids. Meanwhile, the model of pyrolysis steam coupled multi-stage condensers was proposed with the help of the model compound firstly. A numerical simulation was carried out and the results showed that when the number of condensers in series was four, the heat transfer process of the system reached saturation, and the heat exchange of the cold and hot fluids was completely realized, and it was of little significance to continue to connect more condensers in series for the condensation of pyrolysis steam. To quickly condense the hot fluid, the key was to incr... [more]

Keywords: AVL FIRE, burner-type regeneration, diesel particle filter (DPF), exhaust parameters, soot distribution
The burner-type regeneration diesel particulate filter is one of the most widely used diesel particulate filters. Using AVL FIRE, a 3D model of a burner-type regeneration diesel particulate filter (DPF) was established, and simulation analyses were carried out. The effects of the exhaust parameters (temperature, exhaust mass flow rate, and soot load) and the structural parameters (channel density, inlet/outlet channel ratio, and the length−diameter ratio) on soot distribution (soot mass concentration and soot thickness) were analyzed. The results show that the soot distribution characteristics of regenerative DPF with a burner are as follows: the soot mass concentration first rapidly rises to the maximum value and then rapidly decreases to a low value, and the dust thickness gradually increases with the increase in location. With the increase in exhaust mass flow rate and soot load, soot mass concentration and soot thickness increase. With the increase in temperature, the mass concentr... [more]
A Review of the Hydraulic Fracturing in Ductile Reservoirs: Theory, Simulation, and Experiment
Dawei Zhu, Guofeng Han, Honglan Zou, Mingyue Cui, Chong Liang, Fei Yao
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ductile rock, fracture process zone, fracture toughness, hydraulic fracturing, plastic deformation
The bottom-hole pressure of hydraulic fracturing in ductile reservoirs is much higher than that of the hydraulic fracturing simulation, and the fracture toughness inferred from the field data is 1−3 orders of magnitude higher than that measured in the laboratory. The rock apparent fracture toughness increases with the increase in the confining pressure. Excluding the influence of the fluid viscosity and the fluid lag on the apparent fracture toughness, the fracture process zone (FPZ) at the fracture tip can explain the orders of magnitude of difference in the apparent fracture toughness between the laboratory and the field. The fracture tip is passivated by plastic deformation, forming a wide and short hydraulic fracture. However, the size of the FPZ obtained in the laboratory is in the order of centimeters to decimeters, while an FPZ of 10 m magnitude is speculated in the field. The FPZ size is affected by the rock property, grain size, pore fluid, temperature, loading rate, and loadi... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: discharge coefficient, gas turbine, labyrinth seal, Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS), vena contracta
A series of numerical simulations were performed to study the discharge coefficient based on the geometric parameters of a stepped labyrinth seal that sealed the secondary flow path of a gas turbine. In contrast with straight-through seals, stepped labyrinth seals introduce additional geometrical parameters related to the steps. In this study, three shape variables were observed: step height (SH), position, and cavity width (CW). The sensitivity to the leakage flow of the shape variable in the stepped labyrinth seal was analyzed. The mechanism for improving the sealing performance of stepped labyrinth seals was investigated. The results indicated that the stepped labyrinth seal exhibited up to 17.9% higher leakage-suppression performance than the straight labyrinth seal. Seals with large discharge coefficients had a large vena contracta upstream of each tooth structure and a rapidly accelerated axial velocity in the radial direction. We could observe that the discharge coefficient chan... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: circularity, drag coefficient, non-Newtonian fluid, non-spherical particles, settlement experiment
The settlement drag coefficient of non-spherical particles (SDCNPs) is a crucial parameter in the field of petroleum engineering. Accurately predicting the SDCNPs in the fluid is essential to the selection and design of proppant and hydraulic design in the fracturing scheme. Although many models for anticipating the SDCNPs have been proposed, none of them can be adopted for non-Newtonian fluid (NNF) and Newtonian fluid (NF). In the investigation, the SDCNPs in NF and NNF are studied experimentally, and the anticipation mode of the settlement drag coefficient of spherical particles (SDCSPs) in different fluids (including Newton, Herschel-Bulkley and power law) is proposed. On this basis, the shape depiction parameter circularity is introduced to develop the SDCNPs. The results exhibit that the predicted values of the SDCNPs model perfectly align with the experimental values, and the average relative errors are 5.70%, 6.24% and 6.72%, respectively. The mode can accurately describe the se... [more]

Keywords: heat conduction, molecular dynamics, NEMD, organic liquids, thermal conductivity
The research on energy conversion and transportation of fuels at a microscopic level is of great significance to the development of industry. As a new alternative fuel, alcohols are widely used in industry and daily life, so it is necessary to investigate the thermophysical properties of them. In this work, seven species of pure liquid alcohols were performed to investigate the microscopic mechanisms of thermal energy transfer by non-equilibrium molecular dynamic (NEMD) method. Firstly, the thermal conductivity of alcohols was calculated and was found to be consistent with the experimental data. Then, the influence of temperature on energy transfer is investigated, the results show that the contribution of convection energy transfer increases and both the inter- and intramolecular terms decrease with the increase of temperature. Finally, the influence of molecular length on energy transfer was investigated at the same temperature, and it is concluded that the contribution of the convec... [more]

Keywords: energy cost minimization, geographical load balancing, geographically distributed data centers, Optimization, option pricing, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
It is becoming increasingly difficult to properly control the power consumption of widely dispersed data centers. Energy consumption is high because of the need to run these data centers (DCs) that handle incoming user requests. The rising cost of electricity at the data center is a contemporary problem for cloud service providers (CSPs). Recent studies show that geo-distributed data centers may share the load and save money using variable power prices and pricing derivatives in the wholesale electricity market. In this study, we evaluate the problem of reducing energy expenditures in geographically dispersed data centers while accounting for variable system dynamics, power price fluctuations, and renewable energy sources. We present a renewable energy-based load balancing employing an option pricing (RLB-Option) online algorithm based on a greedy approach for interactive task allocation to reduce energy costs. The basic idea of RLB-Option is to process incoming user requests using ava... [more]

Keywords: aquathermolysis, heavy oil, viscosity reduction
Fe(III) oleate (Fe(III)L) has been used in heavy oil aquathermolysis as catalysts, but the effect of the hydrogen donor on this reaction has not been considered. In this paper, we introduce methanol as the hydrogen donor in the Fe(III)L-catalyzed aquathermolysis to investigate the promotion effect of methanol on the aquathermolysis. The results show that the addition of methanol can increase the viscosity reduction rate of aquathermolysis from 81.81% to 91.23%. The heavy oil samples before and after aquathermolysis were characterized by thermogravimetric (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), elemental analysis (EA), and carbon number distribution to investigate the changes in physical and chemical properties and explore the mechanism of methanol as a hydrogen promoter. There was a significant decrease in asphaltene and resin in the oil sample subjected to the reaction after the addition of methanol; the wax precipitation point decreased from 38 °C to 31 °C; the S element cont... Keywords: allylic position equivalents, biodiesel, cetane number, engine performance, fuel structure
Biodiesel is considered an environmentally friendly alternative to petro-derived diesel. The cetane number indicates the degree of difficulty in the compression-ignition of liquid fuel-powered engines. The allylic position equivalent (APE), which represents the unsaturated degree of fatty acid esters, was one of the key parameters for the cetane number of biodiesel. Due to the significant attributes of APE for biodiesel properties, the impact of APE on engine performance and emission characteristics was investigated in this study. The engine characteristics could be improved by adjusting the biodiesel fuel structure accordingly. A four-stroke and four-cylinder diesel engine accompanied by an engine dynamometer and a gas analyzer were used to derive the optimum blending ratio of the two biodiesels from soybean oil and waste cooking oil. Three fuel samples composed of various proportions of those two biodiesels and ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) were prepared. The amounts of saturated fa... [more]

Keywords: analytical prediction, friction factor, heat transfer rate, helically coiled tube, Reynolds analogy, wall shear stress
A theory-based prediction method was used to estimate the friction factor and heat transfer rate in the turbulent flow of a helically coiled tube. The secondary flow produced by a centrifugal force improves heat and mass transfer; therefore, spiral coil pipes are widely used in a variety of industrial applications. The law of the wall and the Reynolds analogy, which states that momentum transfer in a turbulent flow is equivalent to heat transfer, were used in this theoretical method. The logarithmic law was used to characterize the velocity profile in the turbulence-dominated region, and the local wall shear stress variation throughout the circumference of the helical tube wall was considered. The friction factor and heat transfer in the turbulent flow of the helically coiled tube were accurately predicted by the model. Using the Reynolds analogy, the local Nusselt number in the circumferential direction of the helical tube wall was determined. The effect of decreasing local heat trans... [more]

Keywords: downstream, fuel quality, torr-gas, torrefaction, wood pellets
Solid biofuels produced from torrefaction have improved coal-like properties in comparison to raw biofuels, yet ensuring uniform product quality is still a challenge. In this study, downstream torrefaction of wood pellets was performed at temperatures between 200 and 270 °C in a rotary kiln reactor to understand the effect of torrefaction temperature on product quality. The torrefied solid biofuel was compared with dedicated fuel properties defined in ISO/TS 17225-8:2016-12. Based on the results, the optimal temperature for downstream torrefaction was found at temperatures of 230 and 250 °C. Above this temperature, the effect of bulk density superimposes not only the increased net calorific value but also values for mechanical durability, amount of fines, and bulk density of the solid biofuel, which were below the thresholds of the fuel standard. Moreover, increasing process temperatures caused higher heavy metal concentrations in torrefied pellets. The composition of condensable and n... [more]

Keywords: combustion, gasoline direct injection engine, knock, port water injection
This paper explores the effects of six different cases of port water injection on the combustion, knock suppression and emissions of a supercharged gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine through numerical simulation. The six different intake port water injection cases included three vertical distances from cylinder center to water injector and two different injection directions. The results showed that cases 2 and 4 allowed more water and air to enter the cylinder and thus suppressed the knock, so the pressure oscillation was small. Case 2 had the largest turbulent kinetic energy in the center of the cylinder, which in turn facilitated the propagation of flame to the cylinder wall and suppressed the knock. The water injection cases shortened the combustion delay period compared to the no water cases. At the same time, the strong low temperature reaction of the end mixture produced a large amount of CH2O that decomposed into HCO. A high concentration and a large area of HCO distribution... [more]

Nowadays, there is a great deal of interest in the development of practical optimization models and intelligent solution algorithms for solving disassembly-line balancing problems. Based on the importance of energy efficiency of product disassembly and the trend for green remanufacturing, this paper develops a new optimization model for the energy-efficient disassembly-line balancing problem where the goal is to minimize the energy consumption generated during the disassembly-line operations. Since the proposed model is a complex optimization problem known as NP-hard, this study develops an improved metaheuristic algorithm based on the water cycle algorithm as a recently developed successful metaheuristic inspired by the natural water cycle phenomena of diversion, rainfall, confluence, and infiltration operations. A local search operator is added to the main algorithm to improve its performance. The proposed algorithm is validated by the exact solver and compared with other state-of-th... [more]

Keywords: chemical looping, copper oxide, CuO/ZrO2, oxygen uncoupling
Chemical looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) is an innovative alternative to conventional combustion. CuO/ZrO2 oxygen carriers were tested in this system for their effectiveness and resilience. Cupric oxide (CuO) was demonstrated to be a reliable oxygen carrier for oxygen-uncoupling with consistent recyclability even after 50 redox cycles in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The reduction of CuO to generate Cu2O and oxygen was observed to be improved markedly for experiments operated at higher temperatures; however, the oxidation of Cu2O by air to generate CuO was hindered for experiments carried out at elevated temperatures. The reduction rate of fabricated CuO/ZrO2 particles containing 40% CuO was enhanced with increasing temperature and decreased with increasing particle size for experiments operated in a fixed bed reactor. The geometrical contraction and Avrami-Erofe’ev models were demonstrated to be appropriate for describing the reduction and oxidation of CuO/ZrO2, respective... [more]

Keywords: Carbon Capture, carbonic anhydrase, CO2 absorption, reaction kinetics
Tertiary amines have been used as alternative absorbents for traditional primary and secondary amines in the process of carbon capture. However, the carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption rates in these kinds of amine are relatively slow, which implies greater investment and construction costs and limits the large-scale application of carbon capture. Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is considered to be an ideal homogeneous catalyst for accelerating the rate of CO2 into aqueous amine solution. In this work, CO2 absorption combining CA with two single aqueous tertiary amines, namely triethanolamine (TEA) and 2-(diethylamino)ethanol (DEEA), was studied by use of the stopped-flow apparatus over temperature ranging from 293 to 313 K. The concentrations of selected aqueous amine solution and CA used in the experiment were ranging among 0.1−0.5 kmol/m3 and 0−50 g/m3 , respectively. Compared to the solution without the addition of CA, the pseudo first-order reaction rate in the presence of CA (k0,withCA) is s... [more]
