A Numerical Analysis of the Effect of Impeller Rounding on Centrifugal Pump as Turbine
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydraulic optimization, numerical analysis, pump as turbine, rounded blades
Pump as turbine (PAT) is one of the micro-hydro system components. It can be used alone as a generator in remote areas without power supply, and in hydraulic networks instead of pressure-reducing valves. However, its hydraulic optimization still remains an open research problem. One of the optimization techniques is the rounding of the sharp edges at the blade periphery. Existing studies are mostly based on prototype experiments to obtain the optimization effect. In order to more intuitively analyze the influence of this structural optimization on the internal flow of PAT, this paper uses the CFD method to study the influence of the leading edge of the centrifugal pump blade and the fillet of the impeller on the turbine performance. By simulating the PAT performance at different flow rates and speeds, the internal hydraulic performance changes caused by the inverted circular blade are analyzed. Simulation results show that, under various operating conditions, the impeller inverted circ... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, Kuwait, sheep tallow, solar power
Biodiesel is one of the more recent green fuel products in the world. It can be produced from several raw materials such as straight vegetable oils, animal fats, tallow, and waste cooking oils, and blended with diesel. Properties of biodiesel are different compared to fossil diesel in terms of production methods and emission levels released after combustion in an internal combustion engine. Kuwait consumes a huge amount of energy which is almost 8% to meet the increasing demand for electricity and water. Moreover, the use of electricity in the production of biodiesel increases energy use and cost of production. Kuwait is receiving an amount of solar irradiation ranging from 2050 kWh/m2 to 2100 kWh/m2. The present study is concerned with the evaluation of the potential to use solar energy to produce biodiesel from sheep fat waste as a raw material. An experimental test rig was set up for a single cylinder diesel engine in the laboratory, where a solar power system was used to assist the... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy recovery ratio, honeycomb ceramic regenerator, regenerative thermal oxidizer, thermal recovery efficiency
The heat transfer efficiency of a regenerative thermal oxidizer with three canisters used for volatile organic compounds treatment was studied using numerical simulation methods. A one-dimensional model that took into account the variation of physical parameters with temperature was built. The results show that the preheating temperature and outlet temperature tend to be stable as the operation time is increased. The heat transfer efficiency of equipment was mainly evaluated by heat recovery efficiency and energy recovery ratio under steady state conditions, which was affected by the inlet gas flow and temperature, valve switch time, combustion temperature, materials and porosity of the regenerative medium, and packing height. With the increase in packing cross-sectional area and packing height, the increase in heat transfer efficiency leads to an increase in equipment cost. Simultaneously, the shorter the valve switch time and the higher the density of the regenerative medium battery... [more]

An Investigation of Ultrasonic-Assisted Electrochemical Machining of Micro-Hole Array
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cavitation, electrochemical machining, micro-hole array, ultrasonic-assisted
This paper uses an ultrasonic vibration-integrated array electrode for 301 stainless steel micro-hole drilling. The influence of machining parameters such as ultrasonic vibration amplitude, working voltage, pulse-off time and electrode feed rate on different processing characteristics are discussed. The experimental results show that the ultrasonic-assisted electrode array vibrating generates a periodic pressure difference for the electrolyte. The periodic pressure difference forms a pumping effect and a cavitation effect. The two effects can effectively renew the electrolyte in the machining gap and discharge the reaction product, gas and reaction heat from the gap. Machining speed can be increased by over 500% when the ultrasonic amplitude increases from 0.94 μm to 2.87 μm. Micro-hole drilling with the optimum experimental parameter combination of ultrasonic amplitude 2.87 μm, working voltage 11 V, pulse-off time 50 μs and electrode feed rate 5 μm/s can result in a minimum average di... February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flowmeter, Natural Gas, PIV, tracer particles
When a PIV flowmeter is used to measure a large flow of natural gas, the flow field fluctuation and particle distribution have a significant influence on the measurement accuracy and the particle injection mode plays a key role in the flow field fluctuation and particle distribution. To improve the measurement accuracy of PIV flowmeters, the method of filling tracer particles in single pipes, multiple pipes, and L pipes of a natural gas DN100 pipeline under high-pressure working conditions was compared and analyzed through numerical calculation and testing. The results show that the disturbance distance of filling particles in L pipes was the shortest, but the particle distribution area was small, whereas the flow metering error was large. By shortening the intersection distance between the L tube injection flow field and the main flow field, the problem that the particles failed to fill the test area was effectively solved, and the peak turbulence intensity at the intersection of the... February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: axial flow pump, model test, pressure pulsation, runaway process, wake vortex frequency
The runaway condition is a damage condition for pumps and turbines which can induce the wake vortex, reverse flow, and severe pressure pulsation. This study aimed to research the characteristics of pressure pulsation of axial flow pumps under different runaway conditions, and the runaway model test was performed with different blade angles and heads. Electrochemical Reduction of CO2 to CO on Hydrophobic Zn Foam Rod in a Microchannel Electrochemical Reactor
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 mass transfer, electrochemical CO2 reduction, faradaic efficiency, hydrophobic zinc foam
Due to CO2 mass transfer limitation as well as the competition of hydrogen evolution reaction in electroreduction of CO2 in the aqueous electrolyte, Zn-based electrodes normally exhibit unsatisfying selectivity for CO production, especially at high potentials. In this work, we introduced a zinc myristate (Zn [CH3(CH2)12COO]2) hydrophobic layer on the surface of zinc foam electrode by an electrodeposition method. The obtained hydrophobic zinc foam electrode showed a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 91.8% for CO at −1.9 V (vs. saturated calomel electrode, SCE), which was a remarkable improvement over zinc foam (FECO = 81.87%) at the same potentials. The high roughness of the hydrophobic layer has greatly increased the active surface area and CO2 mass transfer performance by providing abundant gas-liquid-solid contacting area. This work shows adding a hydrophobic layer on the surface of the catalyst is an effective way to improve the electrochemical CO2 reduction performance.

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: corrosion, low-nickel stainless steel, passive film, underground water
Application of low-nickel stainless steel anchor was one of the economical and effective methods to solve the durability problem of slope engineering. At present, there are scarce reports about corrosion characteristics of low-nickel stainless steel in various underground waters. For investigating the corrosion initiation of stainless steel anchor bolt in corrosive underground water, the effect of SO42−, HCO3− and pH value on the corrosion behavior of 201 low-nickel stainless steel was studied via electrochemical methods. As the SO42− concentration, HCO3− concentration or pH value increase, the open circuit potential and polarization resistance increase, while the double-layer capacitance, donor density and passive current density decrease. The results indicate that corrosion is inhibited by SO42−, HCO3− and OH− in underground water. In addition, the inhibitive efficiency of SO42− and HCO3− increases with the SO42− and HCO3− concentration.

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Aquila Optimizer, Harris Hawks Optimizer, hybrid algorithm, nonlinear escaping energy parameter, random opposition-based learning
Aquila Optimizer (AO) and Harris Hawks Optimizer (HHO) are recently proposed meta-heuristic optimization algorithms. AO possesses strong global exploration capability but insufficient local exploitation ability. However, the exploitation phase of HHO is pretty good, while the exploration capability is far from satisfactory. Firstly, combining the salient features of AO and HHO retains valuable exploration and exploitation capabilities. In the second place, random opposition-based learning (ROBL) is added in the exploitation phase to improve local optima avoidance. Finally, the nonlinear escaping energy parameter is utilized better to balance the exploration and exploitation phases of IHAOHHO. These two strategies effectively... [more]

Higher Order Accurate Transient Numerical Model to Evaluate the Natural Convection Heat Transfer in Flat Plate Solar Collector
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flat plate solar collector, flow mode transition, natural convection, numerical method, nusselt number
The natural convection flow in the air gap between the absorber plate and glass cover of the flat plate solar collectors is predominantly evaluated based on the lumped capacitance method, which does not consider the spatial temperature gradients. With the recent advancements in the field of computational fluid dynamics, it became possible to study the natural convection heat transfer in the air gap of solar collectors with spatially resolved temperature gradients in the laminar regime. However, due to the relatively large temperature gradient in this air gap, the natural convection heat transfer lies in either the transitional regime or in the turbulent regime. This requires a very high grid density and a large convergence time for existing CFD methods. Higher order numerical methods are found to be effective for resolving turbulent flow phenomenon. Here we develop a non-dimensional transient numerical model for resolving the turbulent natural convection heat transfer in the air gap of... [more]

Keywords: clearance discipline, numerical calculation, tip leakage flow, tubular turbine
To study the effect of tip clearance on unsteady flow in a tubular turbine, a full-channel numerical calculation was carried out based on the SST k−ω turbulence model using a power-plant prototype as the research object. Tip leakage flow characteristics of three clearance δ schemes were compared.
