Assessment of Efficiency and Reliability of Wide Band-Gap Based H8 Inverter in Electric Vehicle Applications
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: common-mode voltage, electric vehicle, leakage current, motor drive, pulse width modulated inverter, pulse-width modulation, space vector
This paper analyzes the performance of a three-phase converter architecture with a reduced common mode voltage to be used in electric motor drives. Starting from the classical three-phase bridge architecture, two additional switches are inserted in the DC link, in order to decouple the source from the load during the freewheeling intervals. Ad-hoc modulation strategies are introduced and evaluated against the classical three-phase space vector modulation. Three main parameters are analyzed: common mode voltage, efficiency and reliability. Experimental measurements on a converter prototype are used to evaluate the common mode performance. The efficiency in the case of Si-IGBT and SiC-MOSFETs is experimentally evaluated. Reliability analysis performed with a Coffin-Mason model showed that the higher efficiency offered by the SiC devices allows for a marked extension of the lifetime.

A Comparative Study of S-S and LCCL-S Compensation Topologies in Inductive Power Transfer Systems for Electric Vehicles
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: detuning state, double capacitances and inductances–series (LCCL-S) compensation topology, electric vehicle (EV), inductive power transfer (IPT), series-series (S-S) compensation topology
In inductive power transfer (IPT) systems, series−series (S-S) and double capacitances and inductances−series (LCCL-S) compensation topologies are widely utilized. In this study, the basic characteristics of S-S and LCCL-S are analyzed and compared in the tuning state. In addition, considering the universality of detuning, and because the two topologies have the same secondary structures, the voltage and current stress on components, input impedances, voltage gains, and output powers of S-S and LCCL-S are mainly analyzed and compared in the detuning state, which is caused by variations in the secondary compensation capacitance. To compare the efficiency of the two topologies and verify the comparative analysis, comparative experiments based on a 2.4-kW IPT experimental prototype are conducted. The comparative result shows that the S-S compensation topology is more sensitive to load variations and less sensitive to secondary compensation capacitance variations than LCCL-S. Both in the t... Suppressing Conducted DM EMI in an Active Power Filter via Periodic Carrier Frequency Modulation
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active power filter (APF), differential-mode (DM) voltage, electromagnetic interference (EMI), periodic carrier frequency modulation (PCFM), pulse width modulation (PWM)
Active power filters (APF) aim at solving the harmonic problem originated by the nonlinear load in power systems. However, the high dv/dt and di/dt outputs from power electronic devices in a voltage source converter on APF introduced unwanted conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) when compensating for the low-frequency harmonic components. Hence, this paper develops a spectrum analysis approach to investigate and quantify the source differential-mode (DM) voltage of a single-phase shunt APF to suppress the DM EMI via periodic carrier frequency modulation (PCFM). In this scheme, the analytical expressions of source DM voltage in the APF using the PCFM scheme are obtained with a double Fourier series. In addition, the influence of PCFM parameters on the source DM voltage spectrum is predicted based on the analytical expression. As a result, the PCFM parameters, which have the best suppression effect on the DM EMI are obtained. The experiment results proved the validity of the sawt... [more]

Appropriate Protection Scheme for DC Grid Based on the Half Bridge Modular Multilevel Converter System
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DC circuit breaker (DCCB), half bridge (HB), hybrid SFCL (Hybrid-SFCL), resistive SFCL (R-SFCL), saturated iron core SFCL (SI-SFCL)
The half bridge (HB) modular multilevel converter (MMC) technology is considered a breakthrough to mitigate the shortcomings of the conventional voltage source converter (VSC) in high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) grid application. However, interruption of the DC fault is still a challenge due to fast di/dt and extremely high levels of DC fault current. The fault interruption using a DC circuit breaker (DCCB) causes enormous energy dissipation and voltage stress across the DCCB. Therefore, the use of a fault current limiter is essential, and the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is the most promising choice. Past literature has focused on the operating characteristics of DCCB or limiting characteristics of the SFCL. However, there is little understanding about the fault interruption and system recovery characteristics considering both DCCB and SFCL. In this paper, we have presented a comparative study on fault interruption and system recovery characteristics considering thre... [more]

Development and Performance Evaluation of Scale-Inhibiting Fracturing Fluid System
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: compatibility, drag-reduction rate, fracturing fluid, scale inhibitor, scaling in propping zone
The injection water and formation water in the Mahu oil field have high salinity and poor compatibility, which leads to scaling and blockage in the formation or fracture propping zone during production. In this paper, a scale-inhibiting fracturing fluid system is developed which can prevent the formation of scale in the reservoir and solves the problem of scaling in the fracture propping zone at the Mahu oil field. Firstly, based on scale-inhibition rate, the performances of six commercial scale inhibitors were evaluated, including their acid and alkali resistance and temperature resistance. Then, the optimal scale inhibitors were combined with the fracturing fluid to obtain a scale-inhibiting fracturing fluid system. Its compatibility with other additives and scale-inhibition performance were evaluated. Finally, the system’s drag-reduction ability was tested through the loop friction tester. The results showed that, among the six scale inhibitors, the organic phosphonic acid scale inh... [more]

Geothermal Potential of the Brenner Base Tunnel—Initial Evaluations
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: geothermal energy, geothermal potential, hydrology, sectional discharges, tunnels, Water, water inflow
Increasing demands on mobility and transport, but limited space above ground, lead to new traffic routes being built, even more underground in the form of tunnels. In addition to improving the traffic situation, tunnels offer the possibility of contributing to climate-friendly heating by indirectly serving as geothermal power plants. In this study, the geothermal potential of the future longest railway tunnel in the world, the Brenner Base Tunnel, was evaluated. At the Brenner Base Tunnel, warm water naturally flows from the apex of the tunnel towards the city of Innsbruck, Austria. In order to estimate its geothermal potential, hydrological data of discharge rates and temperatures were investigated and analyzed. The investigations indicated the highest geothermal potential in the summertime, while the lowest occurs during winter. It could be shown that these variations were a result of cooling during discharge through areas of low overburden (mid mountain range), where the tunnel atmo... [more]

Numerical Investigation of the Knocking Combustion Characteristics of the N-Butanol/N-Octanol RCCI Engine
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion, knock, n-butanol, n-octanol, RCCI engine
The n-butanol/n-octanol fueled reactivity-controlled compression ignition engine was numerically studied based on the KIVA-CHEMKIN code. First, the knocking combustion characteristics were analyzed while functioning with a premixed n-butanol percentage of 20% (B20), since it exhibited the most severe knocking. Ten local regions were monitored to obtain local data, such as pressure and heat release rate. The local pressure oscillation was quantified by a band-pass filter. Second, the premixed n-butanol percentage and the intake valve close (IVC) timing were varied to investigate their effects on the combustion characteristics and emissions formations, as well as their potential for mitigating knocking. The results showed that a strong pressure oscillation was observed for B20 near the cylinder wall, which indicates severe knocking. This consequence is mainly caused by the low-temperature combustion of the n-octanol/n-butanol/air mixture near the cylinder-wall region. Increasing premixed... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: activity coefficient, chemical bonds, elements, group contribution, vapor–liquid equilibrium
Based on the contribution of elements and chemical bonds, the UNICAC (Universal Quasi-Chemical elements and chemical bonds Activity Coefficient) method was proposed to estimate the activity coefficients of nonelectrolyte liquid mixtures. The UNICAC method defined 10 elements and 33 chemical bonds as contribution groups. The calculation of activity coefficients was divided into the combination term and the residual term. The combination term represents molecular size differences, and the residual term describes the interaction between molecules. The interaction energy parameters of 43 groups were regressed simultaneously with the experimental data of the vapor−liquid equilibrium of 1085 binary systems. According to the molecular structural information of compounds, the UNICAC method can accurately predict the activity coefficients of nonelectrolyte liquid mixtures. The vapor−liquid equilibrium of 16 groups of the binary system, which were not included in the parameters regress, was pred... [more]

Electrochemical Synthesis of Nanocrystalline CuAg Coatings on Stainless Steel from Cyanide-Free Electrolyte
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: antimicrobial effect, cyanide-free electrolyte, electrodeposition, HRTEM, ncCuAg coatings, stainless steel
Herein we demonstrate a novel plating bath, free from cyanide, to plate a highly adherent nanocrystalline copper-silver (ncCuAg) coating on a stainless-steel substrate and its application as an antimicrobial coating. The microstructures, such as the grain size, texture, microstrain, and the crystalline preferential orientation of CuAg deposits, are systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis. The range of 13.4−16.6 nm was discovered to be the crystallite size determined from the X-ray peak broadening (Scherrer’s formula). Both HRTEM, FESEM-EDS, XPS, and mapping analysis revealed that the ncCuAg coatings are composed of both Ag and Cu atoms. Electrochemical processes occurring during CuAg co-deposition were investigated by using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and anodic linear stripping voltammetry (ALSV). Additionally, the coatings made of ncCuAg produced by these baths work well as antibacterial agents against gram-positive (Staphylococcus) and... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas–liquid sulfur relative permeability, high temperature and high pressure, sour gas reservoir, stress sensitivity
In the development of high temperature sour gas reservoirs, gas−liquid sulfur two phase percolations exist, which have a significant impact on the gas permeability and gas well productivity. There are currently few reports on experimental studies on gas−liquid sulfur relative permeability. This study improves the experimental equipment and process, and it proposes an experimental method for measuring the gas−liquid sulfur relative permeability curve. Several typical core samples from a sour gas reservoir in Sichuan Basin, China were selected for experimental study, and the gas−liquid sulfur relative permeability under high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) was measured. The results show that, first, the critical flowing saturation of liquid sulfur was 40%, and the gas−liquid sulfur co-flow zone was narrow. With the increase in the liquid sulfur saturation, the gas relative permeability decreased rapidly. Second, the better the physical properties of the core, the greater the damage... [more]

Analysis of Potential Fluctuation in Flow
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: continuity equation, flow instability, initial perturbation, interpenetrating structure, potential fluctuation
Understanding the physics of flow instabilities is important for processes in a wide range of engineering applications. Flow instabilities occur at the interfaces between moving fluids. Potential fluctuations are generated at the interfaces between two moving fluids based on the relationship of continuity. Theoretical analysis demonstrated that, in flow instabilities, potential fluctuation exhibits a potential oscillatory wave surface concurrently in the temporal and spatial dimensions. Potential fluctuations already internally exist in flow before flow instabilities begin to develop; these potential fluctuations greatly affect the formation of interpenetrating structures after forces act on the interfaces. Experimental studies supported the theoretical study: Experiments visualizing condensation flows using refrigerant in one smooth tube and one three-dimensional enhanced tube were conducted to show the development of potential fluctuation in spatial dimensions, and an experiment with... A Review on Hollow Fiber Membrane Contactors for Carbon Capture: Recent Advances and Future Challenges
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, gas separation, hollow fiber, membrane contactor, microporous membrane
Energy need is predicted to increase by 48% in the next 30 years. Global warming resulting from the continuously increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration is becoming a serious and pressing issue that needs to be controlled. CO2 capture and storage/use (CCS/CCU) provide a promising route to mitigate the environmental consequences of CO2 emission from fossil fuel combustion. In recent years, hollow fiber membrane contactors are regarded as an advanced technique with several competitive advantages over conventional technologies such as easy scale-up, independent control of flow rates, more operational flexibility, absence of flooding and foaming as well as high interfacial area per unit volume. However, many factors such as the membrane material selection, proper choice of solvent, and membrane module design are critical to success. In this regard, this paper aims at covering all areas related to hollow fiber membranes, including membrane material, membrane modification, membrane surface... [more]

Experimental Study of the Effects of Pre-Chamber Geometry on the Combustion Characteristics of an Ammonia/Air Pre-Mixture Ignited by a Jet Flame
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ammonia, constant volume chamber, pre-chamber jet ignition, shadowgraph, visualization study
In the future, ammonia is expected to become a carbon-free fuel for internal combustion engines. However, the flammability of ammonia is poorer compared to conventional fuels such as gasoline and diesel fuel. Pre-chamber jet ignition may be an effective way to ensure stable ignition and enhance the combustion of ammonia. In this paper, the effects of pre-chamber geometric parameters, including volume and orifice diameter, on the jet ignition and combustion processes were studied using visualization methods, combined with pressure acquisition. The results showed that ignition energy increased and the jet duration was prolonged with the increase in pre-chamber volume, resulting in a higher maximum pressure and pressure rise rate in the main chamber. The jet characteristics of a larger volume pre-chamber exhibited higher stability when the ambient parameters were changed. The smaller volume pre-chamber showed the superiority of a shorter flame propagation distance inside the pre-chamber,... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: corrosion resistance, magnesium alloy, plasma electrolytic oxidation, tetrafluoroborate
Magnesium and its alloys are widely used in many areas because of their light weight, excellent dimensional stability, and high strength-to-weight ratio. However, the material exhibits poor wear and corrosion resistance, which limits its use. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is an effective surface modification method for producing ceramic oxide layers on Mg and their alloys. The influence of the additions of sodium tetrafluoroborate (NaBF4) and sodium fluoride (NaF) into alkaline-silicate electrolyte on the properties of the conversion layers formed in the magnesium AZ91D alloy has been investigated. Surface morphology and chemical composition were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The anticorrosive properties of the layers were evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) methods in simulated body fluid (SBF). Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Annona muricata L., degradation of polyphenols, heat pump drying, moisture loss kinetic, soursop
The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of time and temperature of the heat pump drying process of soursop slices at different levels on moisture content and total polyphenol content (TPC). Twelve types of classical kinetic models have been used in this work to describe the suitability of experimental data with models. The conformity is assessed based on statistical values (e.g., coefficient of determination (R2), Chi−square value (X2), etc.). The loss of moisture in the material is described in accordance with Fick’s diffusion law. Value of moisture rate (MR), and effective moisture diffusivities (Deff) have been identified. Experimental results show that MR value depends on the time and drying temperature, Deff increases when increasing the drying temperature from 20−50 °C with values of 1.24 × 10−9, 1.85 × 10−8, 7.69 × 10−8, and 5.54 × 10−7 m/s2. Keywords: numerical simulation, transition prediction, transonic planar cascade, TSP technique
Advanced measurement technology on boundary layer transition is an effective means to study the flow mechanism and the performance of the cascade. In this research, to investigate the boundary layer transition of transonic VKI-RG turbine cascade, a noncontact measurement technique named temperature-sensitive paint (TSP) that is capable of quantitatively measuring the surface temperature of a model is used. Under the conditions of outlet Mach number (Ma2) = 0.4, 1.03, and 1.2, the transitional location of a cascade is accurately measured by TSP technique. Moreover, a numerical study on the transitional location of a planar cascade was conducted with the conditions of Mach number (Ma) and attack angle (α). The numerical results show that the transitional location moved forward with the increase in Ma2 and α at Ma2 < 1; otherwise, the transitional location moved backward with increasing Ma2 (Ma2 > 1). Titanium-Doped Mesoporous Silica with High Hydrothermal Stability for Catalytic Cracking Performance of Heavy Oil
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: catalytic cracking, heavy oil, hydrothermal stability, titanium-doped mesoporous silica
With the increasing attention to light oil, the catalytic cracking process of heavy oil is being vigorously developed. The silicon hydroxyl groups on the surface of mesoporous silica materials can be used as weak acid centers to preliminarily crack heavy oil macromolecules. Herein, a strategy of introducing titanium into a silica skeleton for modification is proposed to increase active sites, as well as improve the hydrothermal stability. After titanium modification, the mesoporous silica material has more weak acid sites, and shows better ability in deep cracking heavy oil. Notably, when the content of titanium doping is 2%, the CT(2) catalyst exhibited the best high-temperature hydrothermal stability, which can be used as a suitable heavy oil catalytic cracking catalyst. This kind of titanium-modified mesoporous silica material shows great application prospects in heavy oil catalytic cracking, which may provide a novel idea for subsequent development.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: optimal control, reduction of lubricant consumption, Sustainability, tribology
Although the lubrication systems for internal combustion engines have been designed to prevent engine wear and friction, their configuration does not contemplate the maximum use of each load of lubricant; because of this limitation, lubricant consumption is currently an environmental and economic problem. In this work, the performance of lubrication systems to form the tribological film that prevents wear is simulated and optimized, through the mass balance of the lubricant precursors contained in the oil and the implementation of optimal control techniques. Optimization results indicate that regulating the flow of lubricant passing through the engine prevents excessive degradation of lubricant precursors, maximizing the life of each lube oil charge, giving the possibility to increase the sustainability of internal combustion engines.

Entropy Production Evaluation within a Prototype Pump-Turbine Operated in Pump Mode for a Wide Range of Flow Conditions
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: entropy production, hydraulic loss, pump mode, pump-turbine, various operating conditions
Inside the pump-turbine, energy is irreversibly lost due to turbulent pulsations in the high Reynolds number zone and actions of viscous forces close to the wall. The conventional differential pressure method cannot obtain specific details of the hydraulic loss within the machine’s flow passages; on the other hand, the entropy production method can provide accurate information on the location of irreversible losses and the spatial distribution of energy dissipation. Therefore, based on the entropy production theory, this study investigates the composition and distribution of hydraulic losses under different flow conditions for a prototype pump-turbine in pump mode. Study results indicated that total hydraulic losses significantly decreased, then slowly increased with an increase in flow rate. The entropy production rate caused by turbulence dissipation (EPTD), direct dissipation (EPDD), and wall shear stress (EPWS) displayed the same variation patterns as that of total hydraulic losses... Keywords: coaxial heat exchanger, enhanced heat transfer, geothermal energy, vortex generator
Coaxial borehole heat exchangers provide a practical method for geothermal energy extraction, but heat transfer efficiency is low. In order to address this problem, three coaxial borehole heat exchangers with vortex generators, based on the enhanced heat transfer theory, are proposed in this paper. Keywords: Aspen simulation, diesel hydrotreating, energy consumption analysis, variable reaction conditions
The petrochemical industry is traditionally a high energy consumption industry, thus energy saving in this industry is of great significance in terms of trying to achieve the national goal of “carbon-peak and carbon neutrality” in China. Diesel is one of the main products of petrochemical enterprises. The energy consumption of a diesel hydrotreating (HDT) unit is relatively high due to the high reaction temperature and pressure of HDT reactors. In order to further explore the energy consumption of diesel HDT units under different operating conditions, this paper establishes a full-process simulation based on the kinetics of hydrodesulfurization, hydrodenitrogenation, and aromatics saturation, in Aspen Plus to discuss the effect of different operating conditions on the electricity, steam, and fuel gas consumptions. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dechlorination, glycerol, polyvinyl chloride, solvothermal treatment, waste plastics
Solvothermal treatment using glycerol effectively removes chlorine from polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Additive-free PVC was dechlorinated by treatment with glycerol in an autoclave at 200−240 °C. Liquid glycerol was coexistent with a red powder after the reaction at 200 °C. At reaction temperatures of 220 and 240 °C, the liquid glycerol disappeared, and carbonization proceeded to form a black powder. In this reaction, the glycerol was directly converted into glycidol. Epichlorohydrin was also produced from the glycerol via 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol as an intermediate. The PVC was converted into the polyethylene oxide structure, following the generation of the polyene structure by zip-elimination. Finally, the converted PVC was resinified by an epoxidation reaction with the glycidol and epichlorohydrin. Thus, glycerol acted as a useful reaction medium for this reaction system.
