New Approach Study on Dry Coal Cleaning System with Two-Stage Corona Electrostatic Processes for High-Sulfur Low-Grade Fine Coals
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: corona electrostatic separation, high-sulfur, medium-ash, two-stage corona separation
Corona electrostatic separation can remove inorganic materials from coal, reduce coal ash content and sulfur content and improve coal quality, reduce air pollution caused by smoke dust, SOX, and COX. The performance of corona electrostatic separation technology in cleaning a middle ash medium-ash, high-sulfur coal was experimentally investigated. The electrode voltage, drum rotational speed, and feeding speed were tested, whereas other parameters were maintained constant during the experiment. The results indicate that the performance of this technology in cleaning medium-ash, high-sulfur coal can be improved by optimizing the process parameters. The results demonstrate that corona electrostatic separation is effective for the beneficiation of this grade coal. In addition, the efficiency of coal cleaning is significantly improved by adding the second stage beneficiation to clean the middlings out from the first stage beneficiation. In this study, the first stage of beneficiation recove... [more]

Increase of Cycling Stability in Pilot-Scale 21700 Format Li-Ion Cells by Foil Tab Design
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 21700 format, cell design, cell production, lithium-ion battery, tab design
Li-ion cells of the industrially-relevant 21700 format were built on pilot-scale with tabs made from (a) the electrodes’ current collecting foils (Al and Cu, “foil tabs”) in comparison with (b) conventional tabs (Al and Ni) welded to the electrodes’ current collecting foils (“welded tabs”). Both cell types use the same anode (graphite), cathode (NMC622), separator, electrolyte, as well as the same tab positions. This allows a direct comparison of welded tabs and foil tabs regarding formation, C-rate capability, cell electrical resistance, and long-term cycling stability tests. Our data reproducibly shows 14.4% longer cycling stability and 11.2% increased total charge throughput in the case of the cells with foil tabs until 80% SOH, which is likely due to less inhomogeneities in the case of the foil tab design.

One-Pot Synthesis of Ni0.05Ce0.95O2−δ Catalysts with Nanocubes and Nanorods Morphology for CO2 Methanation Reaction and in Operando DRIFT Analysis of Intermediate Species
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CeO2 morphology, CO2 methanation, in operando DRIFT, nickel catalyst, reaction mechanism
The valorization of CO2 via renewable energy sources allows one to obtain carbon-neutral fuels through its hydrogenation, like methane. In this study, Ni0.05Ce0.95O2−δ catalysts were prepared using a simple one-pot hydrothermal method yielding nanorod and nanocube particles to be used for the methanation reaction. Samples were characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, H2-TPR, and H2-TPD experiments. The catalytic activity tests revealed that the best performing catalyst was Ni0.05Ce0.95O2−δ, with nanorod morphology, which gave a CO2 conversion of 40% with a selectivity of CH4 as high as 93%, operating at 325 °C and a GHSV of 240,000 cm3 h−1 g−1. However, the lower activation energy was found for Ni0.05Ce0.95O2−δ catalysts with nanocube morphology. Furthermore, an in operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analysis was performed flowing CO2:H2 or CO:H2 mixture, showing that the main reaction pathway, for the CO2 methanation, is the direct hydrogenation of for... Investigation of Hydrogen Content and Dilution Effect on Syngas/Air Premixed Turbulent Flame Using OH Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dilution, hydrogen content, OH, planar laser-induced fluorescence, premixed, turbulent flame
Syngas produced by gasification, which contains a high hydrogen content, has significant potential. The variation in the hydrogen content and dilution combustion are effective means to improve the steady combustion of syngas and reduce NOx emissions. OH planar laser-induced fluorescence technology (OH-PLIF) was applied in the present investigation of the turbulence of a premixed flame of syngas with varied compositions of H2/CO. The flame front structure and turbulent flame velocities of syngas with varied compositions and turbulent intensities were analyzed and calculated. Results showed that the trend in the turbulent flame speed with different hydrogen proportions and dilutions was similar to that of the laminar flame speed of the corresponding syngas. A higher hydrogen proportion induced a higher turbulent flame speed, higher OH concentration, and a smaller flame. Dilution had the opposite effect. Increasing the Reynolds number also increased the turbulent flame speed and OH concen... [more]

Energy Consumption Patterns and Load Forecasting with Profiled CNN-LSTM Networks
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clustering, energy profiling, forecasting, pattern recognition
By virtue of the steady societal shift to the use of smart technologies built on the increasingly popular smart grid framework, we have noticed an increase in the need to analyze household electricity consumption at the individual level. In order to work efficiently, these technologies rely on load forecasting to optimize operations that are related to energy consumption (such as household appliance scheduling). This paper proposes a novel load forecasting method that utilizes a clustering step prior to the forecasting step to group together days that exhibit similar energy consumption patterns. Following that, we attempt to classify new days into pre-generated clusters by making use of the available context information (day of the week, month, predicted weather). Finally, using available historical data (with regard to energy consumption) alongside meteorological and temporal variables, we train a CNN-LSTM model on a per-cluster basis that specializes in forecasting based on the energ... Upgrading of Wash Oil through Reduction of Nitrogen-Containing Compounds
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal tar, formamide equilibrium extraction, indole, nitrogen-containing compounds, wash oil
As part of improving the quality of wash oil, the reduction of three kinds of nitrogen-containing compounds (NCs), including quinoline (QU), iso-quinoline (IQU), and indole (IN), found in wash oil was examined by liquid−liquid equilibrium extraction. The wash oil and an aqueous solution of formamide were used as the raw material and the solvent, respectively. Increasing the volume fraction of water in the solvent in the initial state (yw,0) resulted in a decrease in the distribution coefficients of each NC, while inversely, the selectivity of each NC in reference to 2-methylnaphthalene increased. The selectivity ranges of QU, IQU and IN at yw,0 = 0.05~0.3 were 19~57, 19~56 and 50~79, respectively. Through five stages of equilibrium extraction performed under the condition of yw,0 = 0.05, the concentrations of QU and IQU contained in the raffinate oil recovered at the fifth stage were reduced by about 69% and 65% compared to those contained in the wash oil. The concentration of IN in pa... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery cell replacement, battery cost analysis, battery degradation, battery life optimization, battery modeling, lithium-ion battery
The optimization of lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack usage has become essential due to the increasing demand for Li-ion batteries. Since degradation in Li-ion batteries is inevitable, there has been some effort recently on research to maximize the utilization of Li-ion battery cells in the pack. Some promising concepts include reconfigurable battery packs and cell replacement to limit the negative impact of early-degraded cells on the entire pack. This paper used a simulation framework, based on a cell voltage model and a degradation model, to study the feasibility and benefits of the cell replacement concept. The simulation conducted in MATLAB involves generating and varying Li-ion cells in the packs stochastically and simulating the life of the cells as well as the packs until they reach their end-of-life stage. It was found that the cell replacement method can increase the total number of cycles of the battery packs, effectively prolonging the lifespan of the packs. It is also dete... [more]

Keywords: annual performance, economic and technical analysis, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar power plant
The world’s electricity generation has increased with renewable energy technologies such as solar (solar power plant), wind energy (wind turbines), heat energy, and even ocean waves. Iran is in the best condition to receive solar radiation due to its proximity to the equator (25.2969° N). In 2020, Iran was able to supply only 900 MW (about 480 solar power plants and 420 MW home solar power plants) of its electricity demand from solar energy, which is very low compared to the global average. Yazd, Fars, and Kerman provinces are in the top ranks of Iran, with the production of approximately 68, 58, and 47 MW using solar energy, respectively. Iran also has a large area of vacant land for the construction of solar power plants. In this article, the amount of electricity generation using solar energy in Iran is studied. In addition, the construction of a 10 MW power plant in the city of Sirjan is economically and technically analyzed. The results show that with US$16.14 million, a solar pow... [more]

Production Calculation Model of Thermal Recovery after Hydraulic Fracturing and Packing in Tight Reservoir
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fracturing, heat loss, heavy oil production, thermal oil recovery, tight oil reservoir
It was deemed important to calculate the thermal recovery production model of tight oil reservoirs after fracturing and packing based on the field data of an oilfield in Bohai Sea, China. The thermal recovery production of a tight oil reservoir after fracturing is demonstrated through theoretical calculation and practical field data on the premise of five hypotheses. Fractures change the fluid flow capacity of the reservoir. Combined with the relevant theories of reservoir thermal production, the dual porosity system in the fractured zone and the single porosity system in the unfractured zone were established. The calculation models of heat loss in the fractured and unfractured zones were derived to determine the thermal recovery heating radius of the reservoir after fracturing and packing. Combined with the pseudo-steady state productivity formula of the composite reservoir, a production calculation model of thermal recovery after fracturing and packing in the tight oil reservoir was... Incompatible Deformation Model of Rocks with Defects around a Thick-Walled Cylinder
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: finite element, incompatibility, plastic deformation, rock
Before the excavation of underground engineering, joints, fissures, and voids already exist in the rock—that is, there are defects in the rock. Due to the existence of these defects, the rock produces plastic deformation, which can lead to incompatible deformation. Therefore, the classic continuum theory cannot accurately describe the deformation of the rock. In this paper, a relationship between the strain tensor and metric tensor was studied by analyzing the three states of elastic plastic deformation, and the elasto-plastic incompatible model was built. Additionally, the stress and deformation of a thick-walled cylinder under hydrostatic pressure was investigated by using a finite element program written in the FORTRAN language. The results show that the plastic strain is associated with not only deviator stress but also the distribution of defects (represented by the incompatible parameter R). With the value of R increasing, the defects in the rock increased, but the elastic plasti... [more]

Reliability Study of Parameter Uncertainty Based on Time-Varying Failure Rates with an Application to Subsea Oil and Gas Production Emergency Shutdown Systems
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: failure rate, model modification, parameter uncertainty, reliability evaluation, subsea emergency shutdown system, time-varying
The failure rate of equipment during long-term operation in severe environment is time-varying. Most studies regard the failure rate as a constant, ignoring the reliability evaluation error caused by the constant. While studying failure data that are few and easily missing, it is common to focus only on the uncertainty of reliability index rather than parameter of failure rate. In this study, a new time-varying failure rate model containing time-varying scale factor is established, and a statistical-fuzzy model of failure rate cumulated parameter is established by using statistical and fuzzy knowledge, which is used to modify the time-varying failure rate model. Subsequently, the theorem of the upper boundary existence for the failure rate region is proposed and proved to provide the failure rate cumulated parameter when the failure rate changes the fastest. The proposed model and theorem are applied to analyze the reliability of subsea emergency shutdown system in the marine environme... [more]

A Novel Photovoltaic Module Quick Regulate MPPT Algorithm for Uniform Irradiation and Partial Shading Conditions
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: maximum power point tracking, partial shading conditions, photovoltaic module, uniform irradiation conditions
This study proposed a new photovoltaic module quick regulate (PVM-QR) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm, which can eliminate the disturbance problem of the hill-climbing (HC) algorithm, especially under low irradiance level and partial shading conditions (PSC). This proposed algorithm has the advantage that it only uses the detection photovoltaic module (PVM) impedance and the open-circuit voltage to simply and quickly calculate the PVM temperature, the irradiance level, and then the key factor parameter u. To achieve the MPPT quickly and accurately, this proposed algorithm is developed for the prediction of the best MPPT duty cycle based on the irradiance level, parameter u, and load. This study verified the proposed MPPT by the measurement results, where the HC algorithm MPPT has 95% efficiency at 0.55 kW/m2 but diverges at 0.2 kW/m2 under uniform irradiation conditions (UIC), and the proposed MPPT algorithm has an improved efficiency (99%) under the same conditions. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: brush plate, clean brush nickel powder, cleaning speed, energy consumption, structural parameters
The nickel powder brush plate is a core component of the direct contact between the cleaning machine and cathode plate of an electrolyzer, and its movement in the electrolytic cell will affect the energy consumption of the electrolyzer. In order to optimize the structure of the brush plate, a cleaning trolley brush plate was taken as the research object, a mathematical model of its electrolyzer was established, and the reliability was subsequently verified. The influence of the structural and operating parameters of the brush plate on the energy consumption of the electrolytic cell was studied. The research results show that additional energy consumption is the lowest in the process of cleaning a return grooved brush plate. Brush plates with a large slotting area have less impact on the energy consumption of the electrolyzer. Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Fractionation from Crude Palm Oil (CPO)
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, CPO, MUFA, PUFA, SFA
Biodiesel is a fuel derived from vegetable oil. One of the vegetable oils that can be used in the manufacture of biodiesel is Crude Palm Oil (CPO). High-quality biodiesel must have a low iodine number and a high oxidation stability. This can be achieved if CPO does not contain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). It follows that in order to produce high-quality biodiesel, palm oil that contains high saturated fatty acids but that does not contain PUFA is needed. Therefore, it is necessary to fractionate PUFA with saturated fatty acids (SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA). The purpose of this study was to separate PUFA in the form of linoleic acid from CPO and to determine the best conditions in the separation process to produce fatty acids with low iodine numbers. Fractionation was carried out at temperatures of 30 °C and 35 °C, with an extraction time of 3 h and 4 h, and with ratios of CPO and solvent of 1:2 and 1:3 (v/v). Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: renewable energy desalination, sustainable technologies, wind energy, wind energy integration, wind-driven desalination
Desalination is a well-established technology used all over the world to mitigate freshwater scarcity. Wind-powered reverse osmosis plants are one of the most promising alternatives for renewable energy desalination, particularly for coastal areas and islands. Wind energy can satisfy the high energy consumption of desalination while reducing costs and CO2 emissions. February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: discharge coefficient, gas turbine, labyrinth seal, large eddy simulation (LES), power spectrum, Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation (RANS), turbulence kinetic energy
Large eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation (RANS) of leakage flow in straight-through and stepped labyrinth seals were performed in order to compare their performances in sealing the secondary flow passage of the gas turbine based on the respective discharge coefficients. The results indicate a 17.8% higher leakage prevention performance for the stepped seal relative to that of the straight seal. Further, while the LES predicts an ~7% reduction in the discharge coefficient due to shaft rotation, this effect is underestimated by the RANS. Moreover, the LES correctly predicts a laminarized flow pattern in the clearance, whereas the RANS overestimates the turbulence kinetic energy. In addition, a turbulence kinetic energy spectrum analysis was performed based on the vorticity at selected points in order to identify the flow structure that has a dominant influence on the oscillation of the discharge coefficient. The necessity of economical and rational use of natural energy sources caused a rapid development of research on the possibilities of using non-conventional energy resources. Taking the above into account, a new technological process of thermochemical conversion of biomass and communal waste, commonly known as High Temperature Air/Steam Gasification (HTA/SG) and Multi-Staged Enthalpy Extraction Technology (HTAG-MEET), was developed. In relation to traditional techniques of gasification or combustion of hydrocarbon fuels, the presented concept is characterized by higher thermal efficiency of the process, low emission of harmful compounds of carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, dioxins, furans and heavy metals. The use of a high-temperature gasification factor causes an increased thermochemical decomposition of solid fuels, biomass and municipal waste into gaseous fuel (syngas), also with increased hydrogen content and Lower Calorific Value (LCV). Keywords: ARIMA, big data analysis, Lasso regression, Monte-Carlo simulation, remaining useful life
In modern society, environmental sustainability is always a top priority, and thus electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with lithium-ion batteries are becoming more and more popular. As a key component of EVs, the remaining useful life of battery directly affects the demand of the EV supply chain. Accurate prediction of the remaining useful life (RUL) benefits not only EV users but also the battery inventory management. There are many existing methods to predict RUL based on state of health (SOH), but few of them are suitable for real-world data. There are several difficulties: (1) battery capacity is not easy to obtain in the real world; (2) most of these methods use the individual data for each battery, and the computing processes are difficult to perform in the cloud; (3) there is a lack of approaches for real-time SOH estimating and RUL predicting. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cooling tower, photovoltaic cooling, solar chimney, solar water distillation
This work explores the technical possibilities of increasing the efficiency of a standard solar chimney power plant (SCPP) by integrating it with photovoltaic (PV) panels. The integration is possible by using the collector circumference to install the PV collectors, which provide a heat sink, allow for the better harvesting of the solar radiation, and increase energy production. The new design led to an increase in the annual electricity production from 380 to 494 MWh and water production from 278 to 326 k tons/year compared with the standard SCPP, marking an increase of 30% and 17%, respectively. The results also show that the integration reduced the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), the localized cost of energy, and the capital cost of investment by 30%, 36%, and 20%, respectively. The proposed design supports the sustainable replacement of the existing desalination plants with zero operational costs and an excellent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
