Assessment of the Hot-Cracking Susceptibility of Welded Joints of the 7CrMoVTiB10-10 Bainitic Steel Used in Heat Exchangers
Janusz Adamiec
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bainitic steel, cracking of heat exchangers, heat exchanger, high-temperature brittleness range, weldability of 7CrMoVTiB10-10 steel
Bainitic steel containing approx. 2.25% Cr and 0.6 Mo with micro-additions of V, Ti, and B, designated as 7CrMoVTiB10-10 (T/P24), is one of the new construction materials used in new supercritical power units. The weldability of 7CrMoVTiB10-10 is defined as the hot-cracking susceptibility, it should be stated that the hot cracking in the welded joints of 7CrMoVTi10-10 is determined by phenomena occurring in the high-temperature brittleness range (HTBR). In this work, the HTBR is established for both the base material and welding conditions, taking into account the critical temperature-strain intensity (CST) and the critical strain speed (CSS). The HTBR for 7CrMoVTi10-10 is 122 °C wide and covers temperatures from 1394 °C to 1516 °C. Under imposed deformation conditions (typical during welding), the HTBR extends to a width of 293 °C towards lower temperatures, i.e., from 1516 °C to 1223 °C. The CSS = 0.83 1/s, the CST = 0.003 1/°C, and the Rf index = 0.12, which can be adopted as the cr... [more]

Zhen Zhang, Chengzhi Guan, Leidong Xie, Jian-Qiang Wang
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: channel design, multiphysics, opposite trapezoidal, Simulation, SOEC, stack
High efficiency, raw material availability, and compatibility with downstream systems will enable the Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC) to play an important role in the future energy transition. However, the SOEC stack’s performance should be improved further by utilizing a novel flow-field design, and the channel shape is a key factor for enhancing gas transportation. To investigate the main effects of the novel channel design with fewer calculations, we assumed ideal gas laminar flows in the cathode channel. Furthermore, the cathode support layer thickness and electrical contact resistance are ignored. The conventional channel flow is validated first with mesh independence, and then the performance difference between the conventional and novel designs is analyzed using COMSOL Multiphysics. The process parameters such as velocity, pressure, current density, and mole concentration are compared between the conventional and novel designs, demonstrating that the novel design significan... Keywords: Energy, hot-mix asphalt (HMA), HWTT, piezoelectric, sensor, UTM
In furtherance of the quest for green renewable and sustainable energy, an effort was made in this laboratory study to generate and harvest electric power from hot-mix asphalt (HMA); a viscoelastic material that is widely used for road construction. The underlying hypothesis is that the mechanical vibrations and strain energy induced by vehicle loading on the road (pavement) can be harnessed and converted into usable electric power by embedding piezoelectric sensors within the HMA layers of the pavement structure. To investigate the effects of HMA mix type on the generated energy, four commonly used Texas mix types, namely Type B (coarse-graded), Type C (dense-graded), Type D (dense-to-fine graded), and Type F (fine-graded), with up to seven different HMA mix-design volumetric characteristics were comparatively evaluated in the laboratory. In the study, the effects of loading, namely load magnitude and loading frequency, were investigated by simulating the traffic loading in the labora... [more]

Keywords: dynamic simulation, Energy Efficiency, historic buildings, HVAC systems, microclimatic monitoring
The building sector greatly contributes to energy consumption and Greenhouse Gas emissions, relating to the whole building life cycle. Boasting a huge building heritage of historical and architectural value, Europe faces challenging retrofit perspectives, as the potential for high energy efficiency has to be exploited while preserving the buildings’ original characteristics. The present work aims to feature the influence of a passive strategy on a heritage building in a mild climate. As historical its façade cannot be modified, its large glazing areas involve multiple issues, such as an increase in the heating (QH) and cooling (QC) energy demands and the risk of thermal discomfort. Thus, window replacement was proposed for retrofitting. A dynamic simulation model in TRNSYS was validated with experimental data collected by the continuous monitoring of walls of different thicknesses and orientations. Solutions from replacement with Double Glazing Units (DGUs) with improved thermal insula... [more]

Keywords: internal flow structure, pressure pulsations, Pumps, reduction of pressure pulsation, rotor–stator interaction
Unsteady pressure-pulsation-induced severe vibration and high alternating stress can cause some unexpected results, including impeller crack and structural damage of the entire pumping system. In the present paper, a review on pressure pulsations in pumps is carried out based on the published studies. A comprehensive view on pressure pulsations from several aspects is discussed in detail. The contents of the studies include the mechanism of rotor−stator interaction; a prediction model and experimental and numerical investigations of pressure pulsations; unsteady rotating-stall-induced pressure pulsations at off-design flow rates; the relationship between pressure pulsation and the internal flow structure and cavitation; and the reduction in pressure pulsation caused by some effective approaches. It is concluded that unsteady pressure pulsation in pumps is closely associated with complex flow structures, for instance flow separation, cavitation, and rotating stall. The rotor−stator inte... February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cold start, coolant temperature, diesel engine, drop-in fuel, ECU calibration, HVO, pollutant emissions
To meet future goals of energy sustainability and carbon neutrality, disruptive changes to the current energy mix will be required, and it is expected that renewable fuels, such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), will play a significant role. To determine how these fuels can transition from pilot scale to the commercial marketplace, extensive research remains needed within the transportation sector. It is well-known that cold engine thermal states, which represent an inevitable portion of a vehicle journey, have significant drawbacks, such as increased incomplete combustion emissions and higher fuel consumption. In view of a more widespread HVO utilization, it is crucial to evaluate its performance under these conditions. In the literature, detailed studies upon these topics are rarely found, especially when HVO is dealt with. Consequently, the aim of this study is to investigate performance and exhaust pollutant emissions of a compression ignition engine running on either regular (p... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Arrhenius, borescope, diesel low temperature combustion, EGR, flame imaging, flame temperature, high-dilution, LTC, Nox, smoke, two-colour pyrometry
Using high charge dilution low temperature combustion (LTC) strategies in a diesel engine offers low emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx). These strategies are limited to part-load conditions and involve high levels of charge dilution, typically achieved through the use of recirculated exhaust gases (EGR). The slow response of the gas handling system, compared to load demand and fuelling, can lead to conditions where dilution levels are higher or lower than expected, impacting emissions and combustion stability. This article reports on the sensitivity of high-dilution LTC to variations in EGR rate and fuel injection timing. Impacts on engine efficiency, combustion stability and emissions are assessed in a single-cylinder engine and compared to in-cylinder flame temperatures measured using a borescope-based two-colour pyrometer. The work focuses on low-load conditions (300 kPa gross indicated mean effective pressure) and includes an EGR sweep from conventional diesel mode to high-dilution... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compression coefficient, effective stress, nanopore, nuclear magnetic resonance, shale, stress sensitivity
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is widely used to characterize the pore structure of rock. The nanoscale pores and fractures are well developed in a shale gas reservoir. The closure of nanopores caused by the increase in effective stress during the gas production process could induce stress sensitivity in shale nanopores, which has a great impact on the single-well productivity in the middle−late development stage. In this paper, shale samples from the Longmaxi Formation were taken to investigate the nanopore stress sensitivity via an NMR method. Samples with different degrees of pore and fracture development were selected and NMR experiments under different effective stress conditions were carried out. The results show that: (1) As the effective stress increases, the pore space in shale is continuously compressed, and the cumulative pore volume of shale decreases; (2) There is a more pronounced decrease in the cumulative pore volume of samples containing larger pores with the increas... February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cavity receiver, concentrated solar radiation flux, directional distributions, geometric optics, solar energy
It is difficult to measure the concentrated solar radiation flux (CSRF) inside a cavity receiver directly due to the complex geometry of cavity receivers. At present, most reports measure the CSRF at the aperture plane (generally coinciding with the focal plane of solar concentrators) of the cavity receiver instead of at the absorber wall, which would result in serious aberration because of the obvious difference in configuration between the aperture plane and the absorber wall. To obtain the CSRF at the absorber wall with complex geometry, the vector characteristics (consisting of both directional distributions and spatial distributions) of the CSRF at the focal plane were measured using developed double water-cooled Lambertian targets together with a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera. Then the CSRF images at the absorber wall of a hemisphere cavity receiver were carried out by applying MCRTM (Monte Carlo ray-tracing method) in combination with the measured vector results of the CSRF... Pavel Atănăsoae
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CHP, cogeneration economics, combined heat and power, cost allocation, energy prices
In the case of cogeneration, the allocation of operation costs has a particularity specific to the joint production of heat and electricity from the same primary energy source. The cost allocation is also influenced by the demand conditions faced by the joint products, and prices must be sufficient for both products to remain profitable and competitive with other power generation alternatives in the respective markets. Therefore, the choice of cost allocation methodology is influenced by market conditions. The paper presents an algorithm for determining the prices of energy and heat produced in cogeneration according to demand and market conditions. The economic market method was extended with an algorithm based on duality theory for verifying allocation methods and establishing forecasting strategies. An example is provided for a cogeneration plant (1.287 MWe; 5.386 MWth) based on ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) technology and biomass fuel. The fuel cost has a major influence on the total... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery charging, electric vehicle, integrated chargers, multi-phase machine, traction converters
Electric Vehicles are becoming increasingly popular due to their environment friendly operation. As the demand for electric vehicles increases, it has become quite important to explore their charging strategies. Since charging and traction do not normally occur simultaneously and the power electronics converters for both operations have some similarities, the practice of integrating both charging and traction systems is becoming popular. These types of chargers are termed ‘Integrated Chargers’. The aim of this paper is to review the available literature on the integrated chargers and present a critical analysis of the pros and cons of different integrated charging architectures. Integrated chargers for electric vehicles with three-phase permanent magnet synchronous machines, multi-phase machines and switched reluctance machines were compared. The challenges with the published integrated chargers and the future aspect of the work were been discussed.

Keywords: Exergy, heat transfer, methane, micro-combustion, thermal performance, thermodynamics
The present work numerically investigates the effect of a cavity implemented in a premixed methane/air micro-combustor on enhancing its thermal performances and thermodynamic efficiencies for micro-thermophotovoltaic applications. The 3D time-domain numerical model is first validated by comparing its predictions with the experimental data available in the literature. Then it is applied to examine the effects of the cavity dimensionless axial location (xc/L), cavity volume (Vc), the equivalence ratio ϕ and hydrogen blended ratio (α) on the temperature uniformity and enhancement of the combustor outer wall and exergy efficiency. It is found that implementing a cavity in the combustion chamber increases the outer wall mean temperature (OWMT) and the exergy efficiency up to approximately 65 K and 10%, respectively. The optimal cavity dimensionless axial location (xc/L) is set to 1/9, and the height (Hc_dims) is 1/5, respectively. However, the cavity length Lc and angle θc are found to play... [more]

Keywords: CO2 refrigeration cycle, coefficient of performance (COP), expander, intercooling, internal heat exchanger (IHX), two-stage compression
Because of the limitations of traditional refrigerants, the application of trans-critical CO2 technology in domestic gas conditioners and other fields is becoming increasingly popular. This paper proposes a new CO2 trans-critical refrigeration system. Combining the internal heat exchanger and expander components, as well as the two-stage compression cycle, we analyzed the effectiveness of the expander, internal heat exchanger, and intercooling on system performance under various operating conditions in terms of energy, exergy analysis, and optimal discharge pressure. The system performance can be changed by changing the cycle conditions and internal heat exchanger effectiveness, which reduces system power consumption and the percentage of exergy losses of gas cooler components. Compared to the single-stage compression with expander cycle, the systems cycle power consumption is reduced by 2−15.7% and the maximum system COP is increased by 2.93−6.93%. From the view of energy effectivenes... [more]

Keywords: AHP, CRITIC, geological structure, risk prediction, roof flood
The more complex the hydrogeological conditions of a mine, the more likely the coal seam is to experience water inrush during the mining process, and the greater the degree of the water inrush hazard. The scientific and reasonable prediction of water inrush in mines with complex hydrogeological conditions is of great significance to the safe and efficient operation of coal mines. Taking the roof water inrush problem of the No. 3 lower coal seam in the Jisan Coal Mine as the research object, the factors affecting the roof water inrush of the coal seam were comprehensively considered from three aspects: the aquifer property, the mining fracture development and the geological structure. The evaluation index system was constructed by selecting 10 factors, including the aquifer depth and thickness, core recovery rate, brittle−plastic rock thickness ratio, number of water-resisting layers, development height of the water-conducting fracture zone, fault density, frequency density, scale index... Keywords: power system stability, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, uncertainty modelling techniques
In pursuit of identifying the most accurate and efficient uncertainty modelling (UM) techniques, this paper provides an extensive review and classification of the available UM techniques for probabilistic power system stability analysis. The increased penetration of system uncertainties related to renewable energy sources, new types of loads and their fluctuations, and deregulation of the electricity markets necessitates probabilistic power system analysis. The abovementioned factors significantly affect the power system stability, which requires computationally intensive simulation, including frequency, voltage, transient, and small disturbance stability. Altogether 40 UM techniques are collated with their characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and application areas, particularly highlighting their accuracy and efficiency (as both are crucial for power system stability applications). This review recommends the most accurate and efficient UM techniques that could be used for proba... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy market integration (EMI), energy trade gaming, price convergence (PC)
This paper surveys theory and practice on how a larger and integrated energy market can propel electricity trading through economies of scale. We make a systematic presentation of theories and methods used by various scholars to generate knowledge on integrated electricity markets. We discuss paradigms, concepts, and practices emanating from the complex topic of a unified electricity market with an intent to identify gaps. We conclude that electricity trading in EMI has a propensity to drive both economic integration and sustainable energy access; that crafting ways and means for integrating cross-border systems without sacrificing the local economy could make the idea of EMI more palatable to partner countries; and that adoption of ex ante studies that are non-data oriented could improve the design of upcoming regional electricity markets.

Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, compressibility factor, condensate gas
The injection of carbon dioxide (CO2) into gas reservoirs has become an important way to enhance gas recovery and reduce CO2 emissions. Large discrepancies are observed when predicting natural gas compressibility factors with high CO2 content by several well-known empirical correlations. An explicit correlation is proposed to improve the prediction accuracy in the estimation of compressibility factors on condensate gases with variable CO2 contents. The analysis of the results is carried out on the basis of 202 experimental data from 9 various mixtures of natural gases. The results show that relative deviations of compressibility factors predicted by conventional empirical correlations increase with the increase in CO2 mole fraction with an average error of 8%. The average error of the new method is less than 4%. The effect of compressibility factors on the estimations of dynamic reserves is studied and the compressibility factor causes a 3% reduction in dynamic reserves estimation. The... [more]

Keywords: Hydrogen, induced voltage, ion migration, rotating magnetic field, water electrolysis
In this paper, the effect of rotating magnetic fields on hydrogen generation from water electrolysis is analyzed, aiming to provide a research reference for hydrogen production and improving hydrogen production efficiency. The electrolytic environment is formed by alkaline solutions and special electrolytic cells. The two electrolytic cells are connected to each other in the form of several pipes. The ring magnets are used to surround the pipes and rotate the magnets so that the pipes move relative to the magnets within the ring magnetic field area. Experimentally, the electrolysis reaction of an alkaline solution was studied by using a rotating magnetic field, and the effect of magnetic field rotation speed on the electrolysis reaction was analyzed using detected voltage data. The experimental phenomenon showed that the faster the rotation speed of the rotating magnetic field, the faster the production speed of hydrogen gas.

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building automation system, demand management, indoor air quality
Demand management is expected to reduce emissions from energy systems and support the utilization of renewable energy sources. In this paper, the focus is on the viability of educational buildings’ mechanical ventilation systems’ participation in electric demand management. The results suggest that when load shedding lasts for a short duration, the ventilation machine load seems more promising than expected for electric demand management, as even 60% of its electric power could be granted to such markets. Prolonging the load-shedding duration increases the risk of the indoor carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration exceeding the limit for good indoor air quality. This paper contributes to the academic community by providing information for the assessment of the demand management potential of buildings and eventually their significance in decarbonizing the electric energy system and filling research gaps concerning the impact of implementing demand management that involves a reduction in vent...
